Motorola has long been associated with flip phones, from its hugely successful Razr V3 released in 2004, through to its current foldable screen Razr flip phones. But the brand hasn't tried producing a book-fold foldable phone... until now. The new Razr Fold goes up against foldable heavyweights like the Samsung Galaxy Fold 7 and Honor Magic V series, and with a launch price of $1,999/£1,799, Motorola is clearly aiming the Razr Fold at the ultra-premium end of the market.

Foldable phones usually have compromised camera systems, as they have to be as thin as possible in order not to be too bulky when folded, and this doesn’t leave much space for decent camera hardware. But the Razr Fold manages to pack a relatively large 1/1.28-inch 50MP Sony Lytia 828 sensor for its primary camera, which is capable of recording 8K Dolby Vision video. A 50MP Sony Lytia 600 sensor is used for the 3x telephoto module, which benefits from Motorola's AI-powered 100x Super Zoom Pro mode. The third camera in the trio is an ultrawide snapper which uses another 50MP sensor and features a 3.5cm macro mode. You also get a 32MP internal selfie camera, along with a 20MP external selfie camera.

How effective is this camera system? Well, the good folks over at DxO have had a sneak preview, and they rate the Razr Fold as the best foldable phone right now for camera quality. More information on that here.

Naturally, the centrepiece of any foldable phone is its screen. The Razr Fold boasts an 8.1-inch 2K LTPO unfolded screen which is said to be the brightest interior display of any foldable on the market. Beneath the display is a titanium inner screen plate designed to help distribute pressure evenly across the fold, allowing the screen to return to its original shape after every open and close. Combined with Ultra-Thin Glass and an Anti-Shock Film, the folding screen has been designed to last, and is said to retain a smooth, creaseless look. The Razr Fold's 6.6-inch external display benefits from Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 - the first smartphone to use this version of Gorilla Glass. Motorola says the Razr Fold achieved "over 75% better drop performance compared to previous-generation devices", which bodes well for the phone's longevity.

Processing power comes from a Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 Mobile Platform, with 16GB RAM and up to 1TB of storage. This is fuelled by a large 6000mAh battery that's capable of 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging.Despite the big battery and commendable camera system, Motorola has still managed to keep the Razr Fold Slim. It measures just 4.6mm thick when open and 9.9mm thick when closed. In addition to these usage modes, the Razr Fold can also be transformed into laptop mode for comfortable typing, or you can fold it into tent mode to watch content.

The Motorola Razr Fold will be available soon, with a choice of three color options: Pantone Lily White, Pantone Blackened Blue, or a special edition FIFA World Cup 26 Collection.

If you were to guess which foldable phone would have the best camera system, you'd probably assume it'd be something like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold, Google Pixel Fold, or a Chinese heavyweight brand like Honor with one of its Magic V-series phones. But there's one foldable that's just trounced the competition to win 8th place on the prestigious DxOMark smartphone camera ranking. That makes it by far the highest-placed foldable phone DxO has ever tested, with the next-best foldable - the Honor Magic V5 - down in 29th spot. And who's responsible for this world-beating new Foldable? Well, it's Motorola, of course!

The new Razr Fold has a camera system so good that it beats some of the best camera phones on the market, like the Google Pixel 10 Pro XL, iPhone 16 Pro Max, and Oppo Find X8 Pro.Heck, it's even close to matching the awesome Xiaomi 17 Ultra for image quality. You could argue that as the Razr Fold costs $1999, it darned well should have a stellar camera system. But historically, foldable phones are a compromise design that have to be as thin as possible in order not to be too bulky when folded. That means there's less space within each foldable section for cameras, thereby restricting the size of image sensors and lenses that'll fit inside.

But somehow Motorola has managed to cram in a 50MP Sony Lytia 828 sensor for the Razr Fold's main camera. This is a relatively large 1/1.28-inch chip with 2.44um pixels and is fronted by a large aperture f/1.6 lens. It's teamed with a telephoto module that uses a 50MP Sony Lytia 600 sensor for its 3x zoom lens, while a 50MP wide-angle module with a 122-degree field of view completes the triple-camera array.

DxO praised the Razr Fold for its "Well-rounded camera performance that is adapted for a variety of use cases", along with its good low light image quality, natural-looking portrait shots, and high-performing telephoto camera. Only some minor focus inconsistencies in video recording and noticeable noise in challenging lighting conditions kept the Razr Fold from scoring even higher.

So there you have it: if you want a foldable phone which also has a camera system that doesn't compromise on image quality (and you've got a spare $2,000 burning a hole in your pocket!), then Motorola should be top of your shortlist ahead of it going on sale from April 13.

Motorola phones don't tend to grab many headlines outside of the flip phone sector, but its upcoming Edge 70 Fusion looks intriguing. Though positioned as a mid-range handset, it'll be the first phone to use Sony's 50MP LYT-710 sensor. Technical details about this are hard to find, but Motorola promises that the camera can take "ultra-clear" low-light images and offer "brighter" highlights in videos.

The camera array also features a 13MP ultrawide snapper, along with macro and depth modules. There won't be a dedicated telephoto camera, but '12-24mm' is printed around the flash, indicating that the primary camera could have 2x on-sensor lossless zoom. It's expected that the Edge 70 Fusion will also feature a 32MP selfie camera.

Elsewhere, Motorola has teased a 144Hz display with 1.5K resolution and "quad curved" screen edges, enabling a 96.2% screen-to-body ratio. Peak brightness is said to be 5,200 nits, with the display featuring HDR10+ support. The phone will also pack a huge 7000mAh battery, which Motorola claims is big enough to power the Edge 70 Fusion for up to 52 hours. Yet despite the high capacity battery, the phone is said to be just 7.99mm in thickness (excluding the camera bump). Processing power will be provided by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chipset.

To make the Edge 70 Fusion stand out of the crowd visually, it'll be available in five body color options, all of which are Pantone curated colors. The rear panel will also get a fabric finish for a little extra distinctiveness.

Motorola is expected to fully reveal the Edge 70 Fusion at Mobile World Congress 2026, which starts on Monday, March 2.

If you've been waiting for a phone that doubles as a serious tool for photo editing, Motorola's latest announcement might be worth your attention. The company has just unveiled the Razr Fold, its first book-style foldable phone, and it comes with something none of its American rivals offer: proper stylus support.

For anyone unfamiliar with foldables, think of it as a smartphone that opens like a book to reveal a tablet-sized screen. When closed, the Razr Fold has a 6.6-inch display. Open it up, and you get an 8.1-inch screen – large enough to genuinely replace both your phone and iPad for certain workflows.

The stylus makes the difference

While Samsung and Google both make foldable phones, Samsung actually dropped stylus support from its latest Galaxy Z Fold 7. That makes the Razr Fold the only flagship foldable in the US market with dedicated stylus capability.

This new phone will include support for the Motorola's Moto Pen Ultra, which offers 4,096 pressure levels and a remarkably low 5.3-millisecond latency. In plain English, that means it should feel responsive and natural to use. The stylus comes in its own charging case and connects via Bluetooth, with an IP55 rating protecting it from dust and water.

So what does this all mean for photographers? Quite a lot, I'd suggest.

The obvious advantage is mobile editing. Trying to make precise selections or draw accurate masks with your finger is frustrating at best. With a proper stylus, you can do detail work that would normally require a desktop setup. Need to dodge and burn specific areas? Want to apply selective adjustments? A stylus makes this possible with actual precision.

Then there's annotation. If you're shooting for a client and need to mark up images, a stylus is invaluable. You can circle problem areas, draw arrows to specific elements, or write notes directly on previews. It makes location-based collaboration much more practical.

For those who sketch lighting setups or shot compositions before a shoot, the large screen combined with stylus input provides a proper canvas. You can draw diagrams, map positions, or quickly sketch ideas – all on the same device you're using to capture images.

The tablet-sized screen, meanwhile, could transform how you review images in the field. Rather than squinting at a small phone display, you get something closer to using a proper monitor. Combined with the stylus, you can make quick editorial decisions, mark selects, or add ratings as you work through a shoot.

There are three 50MP rear cameras on the Razr Fold: a Sony main sensor, an ultra-wide lens that doubles as a macro, and a telephoto with three-times optical zoom. There's also a 32MP external selfie camera and a 20MP internal camera. The device can record video in Dolby Vision for enhanced dynamic range and color accuracy.

Playing catchup

Motorola is arriving relatively late to the market here. Samsung is already on its seventh-generation Galaxy Z Fold, and Google is on its third Pixel Fold. However, Motorola does have some related experience through its Razr line of flip-style devices, which it's been making since 2019.

The Razr Fold is expected to launch this summer and pricing has yet to be announced. So whether the Razr Fold becomes a serious tool for photographers will depend on a lot of things. On paper, though, the combination of a tablet-sized screen, precision stylus input, and a capable camera system does sound genuinely interesting. 

For anyone wishing to review, edit, and annotate images properly while working on location, it could fill a gap that existing foldables haven't managed to address.

Motorola has announced two new flip phones, the Motorola Razr 50 (Razr 2024 in the US) and Razr 50 Ultra (Razr Plus 2024 in the US). We got our hands on the flagship for a quick flip and snap to try out its camera and that oversized cover screen ahead of our full review.

Moto's new flip phones aren't cheap, but with the Razr 50 costing £799 (approximately $1010 and AU$1495), and the Razr 50 Ultra costing £999 (approximately $1265 and AU$1870), the price of flexible screens is slowly starting to mainstream.

The headline grabber of both phones is the size of their cover screens, with Motorola bumping up the Razr 50 Ultra's to 4 inches, larger than the 3.5-inch screen on the original iPhone. Indeed, turning it on, the phone looks like it's plucked from the future as its entire fascia lights up.

With upgraded specs, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 for 2024-grade power, as well as Google Gemini AI out of the box, the Razr 50 Ultra looks set to be relatively future-proofed, and its camera has also gotten a spec bump, with a dual-50MP system sporting one wide and one telephoto camera. 

Razr 50 Ultra photography and video

Foldables, and in particular, flip phones struggle to compete with traditional phones when it comes to photography. After all, good camera lenses and sensors are big, and space is at a premium when a phone folds in half. As a result, every flip phone compromises on cameras, whether you're talking about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 or even the class-leading Oppo Find N3 Flip. Unsurprisingly, this is true of the Motorola Razr series, too.

So while compared to other comparably priced phones, the Razr 50 Ultra's camera specs don't read well, the setup is still a step up compared to last year's Razr 40 Ultra, with a primary 50MP sensor, likely the Samsung GN8 ISOCELL sensor in the Galaxy A35. Combining OIS with a fast f/1.7 lens, the Razr 50 Ultra captures shots at 12.6MP by default.

While last year's Razr featured an ultra-wide camera alongside the main camera, Moto's shaking things up for 2024 with a 2x telephoto camera, also clocking in at 50MP. Looking at the specs, this is probably a Samsung ISOCELL JN1 sensor, and while the lens lacks OIS, it does sport a relatively fast f/2.0 aperture.

Technically, both these cover cameras are also selfie cameras thanks to flip phone ergonomics, but if you want to snap selfies when your Razr 50 Ultra is open, Motorola also loads up a 32MP punch-hole selfie camera inside. This combines an Omnivision sensor, f/2.4 aperture, and an 8MP picture output resolution.

The camera also supports the now-standard array of part-folded shooting modes, so it's easy to steady it on a surface for long-exposure night shots or hold it sideways for camcorder-style video recording. You can also give subjects a preview of themselves on the Razr's cover display.

Part-folded camera antics also extend to video recording, saving you from needing a tripod for some hands-free capture. The Razr 50 Ultra's 4K video caps out at 60fps, and the phone also records HDR video.

Razr 50 Ultra style and specs

One thing the Razr 40 Ultra didn't struggle with was style, and that standout look is carried forward for 2024. The added cover screen size really does lend some wow-factor to the phone's aesthetic when closed, and the colour options also work nicely, with our review device being Spring Green, and other options including Midnight Blue, Peach Fuzz, and Hot Pink.

Unlike last year's model, the Razr 50 Ultra is also IPX8 water resistant, and protection extends to the Gorilla Glass Victus front and a 6000 series high-strength aluminum frame. Weighing 189g, Motorola's made its latest flip phone light, considering it packs two screens and a hinge, though the battery capacity clearly takes a hit at 4000mAh, so it's one of the more modest cells around. On the plus, with 45W fast charging and a 68W charging brick in the box – powerful enough to charge your laptop – at least topping up won't keep you waiting.

When the phone is opened, a tall 6.9-inch pOLED display shines at up to 3000 nits peak brightness when playing back HDR content. It's also very smooth at up to 165Hz, and this quality is matched by the 165Hz cover screen, which sports a simple-to-navigate interface.

Motorola's added some nifty cover screen features like tent mode – part-fold the phone and stand it up – turning the cover screen into a desk clock thanks to a power-efficient always-on display. It also brings back gestures seen on past Moto phones, including wrist twist to fire up the camera and a double flick to launch the torch.

The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chipset powering the 50 Ultra is also matched with an ample 12GB RAM and 512GB storage, so it should handle gaming and multitasking while giving you space for plenty of apps and files.

All things considered, the Razr 50 Ultra looks like a winning mix of style and substance, and it'll be interesting to see just how much Motorola can eke out of its dual 50MP camera system. Motorola has announced its Edge 50 Fusion, Edge 50 Pro, and Edge 50 Ultra, three sleek smartphones with curved screens, striking style, and the freshest Moto cameras around. In addition to the phones, the company's partnership with Pantone across both screen and camera colour calibration is also noteworthy, and the Edge 50 Pro and Ultra also offer Google's auto-enhance photo processing in-camera for automatically pumped-up shots.

Motorola has long been a reliable choice for anyone looking for excellent value, especially when it comes to design, display, and performance. However, its smartphone cameras have struggled to compete above the $/£350 mark with stiff competition from the likes of Nothing, OnePlus and Redmi.

Having spent some time with the Edge 50 Pro, it looks like Moto's photo processing has taken a step in the right direction and embraced computational photography with a degree of finesse. Motorola Edge 50 Ultra

Whichever Motorola Edge 50 you pick up, in the display settings is a color mode that's Pantone Validated, and it's aptly called Natural. If you do opt for the Ultra, its display is a 6.7-inch 1220p panel with a crisp 446 pixel-per-inch pixel density, making it relatively large and as sharp as it needs to be.

With its silky 144Hz refresh rate, the Edge 50 Ultra's screen is smoother than any mainstream flagship while also competing with 10-bit and 100% P3 color and a peak brightness of 2,500 nits.

Flip the phone around, and if you pick up the Peach Fuzz or Nordic Wood options, you're in for some standout styling, and it's also available in a more traditional Forest Grey color. All three color options are IP68 water and dust resistant.

Also around the back is the Edge 50 Ultra's triple camera system, with a 50MP main camera, a 50MP ultra-wide camera, and a 64MP periscope telephoto camera. 

The main camera's spec is most impressive with its 1/1.3-inch sensor size and f/1.6 aperture, while the ultra-wide camera's party trick is autofocus, so it can capture macro shots. As for the telephoto camera, its 3x zoom reach and f/2.4 aperture should combine to make it well-suited to portraits and product shots.

Motorola's also got high-resolution selfies covered with the front camera's 50MP sensor matched with an f/1.9 aperture, and whichever camera you use, turning on Google's auto-enhance feature will give your pictures extra polish.

Powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 8s Gen 3, running Android 14 and with either 512GB or 1TB storage, while the Edge 50 Ultra isn't a shoo-in for best camera phone of 2024 based on its specs, it still looks competitive and packs plenty of highlights, not least of all that optional wood finish.

Motorola Edge 50 Pro

The Edge 50 Pro dials back the spec and price without downgrading the 50 Ultra's display, packing the same 6.7-inch, 144Hz 1220p screen, it looks standout at the phone's price.

The main areas the Edge 50 Pro pares things back are the cameras and performance, with the phone's 50MP main sensor sporting a smaller 1/1.55-inch sensor size matched with a very fast f/1.4 aperture and OIS. 

The Pro's ultra-wide camera has a 13MP resolution but still focuses up close to an object for macro snaps, and the 10MP telephoto camera isn't a periscope lens, but still captures with a 3x optical zoom and has OIS.

The Motorola Edge 50 Pro is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 from Qualcomm, matched with 12GB RAM and a generous 512GB storage. At its price, while it isn't too hard to find more power for less, you'll be hard-pressed to get 512GB storage in a package that looks as good as the Edge 50 Pro.

The Edge 50 Pro and Ultra both charge at up to 125W, come with high-speed chargers in the box, and also support up to 50W wireless charging.

Motorola Edge 50 Series prices and availability

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra will be available in the UK and other European countries from mid-May for £849, approximately $1,055 / AU$1,650. The Edge 50 Pro is available right now for £599, approximately $750 / AU$1,165. 

Alongside the Edge 50 Ultra and Pro, Motorola also announced a lower-cost, dual-camera Edge 50 Fusion, set to launch in mid-May for £349, approximately $435/AU$680.

With Huawei and Xiaomi achieving huge success after partnering with Leica, OnePlus and OPPO's cameras becoming amongst the best around following their partnership with Hasselblad, and Vivo's Zeiss partnership producing one of the best camera phones of 2024 – the X100 Pro – Motorola's Pantone partnership could mark a turning point for its photography cred.

Oppo has launched its latest flip phone, the Find N3 Flip, in China, with a global launch to follow. The successor to the popular Find N2 Flip, the Find N3 Flip is the first competitor to take on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 since it launched. Side by side with the competition, Oppo's Find N3 Flip misses out on the almost-square cover screen trend Motorola set in action with its RAZR 40 Ultra. 

For photography fans, Oppo gives you something arguably more important than a biggest-in-show cover screen. The Find N3 Flip has the biggest camera sensors of any flip phone to date, it's the first of its kind to squeeze in a triple camera system, and it's the first with an optical telephoto lens.

With a primary 50MP camera sporting a 1/1.56-inch sensor, while Oppo's flip phone trails behind 1-inch sensor behemoths like its Find X6 Pro and the Xiaomi 12s Ultra, compared to other flip phones, the Find N3 Flip is class-leading. For context, the Galaxy Z Flip 5's main camera sensor is 1/1.76-inch, and the RAZR 40 Ultra's is an even smaller 1/2.55-inch.

It's a similar story for the ultra-wide camera sensor, which clocks in with a 48MP resolution, has an f/2.2 lens, and a 14mm equivalent focal length. This bests the competition with autofocus alone, and the extra sensor size and resolution gives Oppo a clear win on paper. Finally, the portrait camera, unique to the Find N3 Flip, is a 32MP module with a 2x optical zoom, and a 47mm equivalent.

If you're wondering what's so Hasselblad about the Find N3 Flip, based on past Oppo phones we've tested, the camera UI, Pro mode, and Xpan are loaded up with Hasselbladisms, though we'll know more when the phone launches globally.

The rest of the Find N3 Flip's specs look relatively uncompromising, with a flagship MediaTek Dimensity 9200 chipset, which we first saw in the Vivo X90 Pro, matched with a healthy 12GB RAM and 256GB storage.

In China, the Find N3 Flip is set to be available in three colors: Cream Gold, Misty Pink, and Sleek Black, with one design highlight we weren't expecting - an alert slider - lifted straight out of the OnePlus playbook.

The cover screen looks identical to the vertical front display introduced on the Find N2 Flip, though Oppo promises extended integration with third-party apps. We saw Spotify and other third-party services rolled out to its cover screen OS after Find N2 Flip launched, so it will be interesting to see what ends up in the global version when the Find N3 Flip eventually arrives.

As for where we can expect it, the Find N3 Flip is unlikely to launch in the US, though Europe did recently see the launch of the Oppo Reno 10 series, so watch this space. Motorola's new RAZR 40 and RAZR 40 Ultra (the RAZR (2023) and RAZR Plus (2023) in North America) have been announced alongside a color-popping Viva Magenta version of its good-looking Edge 40. 

The lower-cost RAZR 40 starts at £799.99, making it the most affordable flip phone to date, while the pricier RAZR 40 Ultra costs £1099.99. While both phones are only confirmed for Europe, the North American variants look set to cost a fair bit less, with the RAZR Plus launching at just $999, and the standard RAZR 2023 price still to be confirmed.

There hasn't been much action in the large-form foldable space outside China, the flip phone market is filling up. There's Samsung's ubiquitous Galaxy Z Flip 4, the Oppo Find N2 Flip, and last year's RAZR (2022) – all good phones, which is more than can be said for past-gen foldables.

So what's the key difference between the two RAZRs? The most obvious is that the RAZR 40 Ultra has a huge front display that takes up virtually all the fascia, while the RAZR 40's is much more modest, not dissimilar to the Galaxy Z Flip 4's cover screen. They also have different cameras and components, so let's dive into each in a little more detail.

Motorola RAZR 40 Ultra / RAZR Plus (2023)

Motorola's flagship foldable has an eye on fashion – and that shouldn't come as a surprise, after all, Moto is the brand behind the iconic RAZR line, once the hot pink accessory to have, since the noughties, Moto's brand has evolved. 

Over the last few years, especially, RAZRs have been bundled in with other foldables, falling under the category of geek fodder. Now, though, flip phones are less of a novelty than they were even last year, and Moto's set on bringing it back to fashion with the RAZR 40 Ultra.

Available in the Pantone color of the year, Viva Magenta, this fruity choice seems like a mature take on the hot pink RAZR of old. It's also available in Glacier Blue and Infinite Black for anyone after more traditional styling.

The big news here is the phone's screens – specifically the cover screen. With a large, 3.6-inch display and full freedom to run apps across it, not just pre-loaded widgets, the RAZR 40 Ultra can be used to the full, whether open or closed.

We tried it out with the Kindle app and Disney+, and while the front screen isn't exactly cinematic, thanks to crisp visuals, 144Hz smoothness, and a punchy picture, it was perfectly usable.

Open the phone up and the huge 6.9-inch screen takes center stage with its tall 22:9 aspect ratio. Moto's relatively stock take on Android 13 and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip power the experience, while a 3800mAh battery keeps it ticking along. The phone also gets wireless charging – a novelty on foldables, as well as 33W turbocharging, shipping with a charger in the box.

As far as the cameras go, the RAZR 40 Ultra misses out on a big sensor sharpshooter, instead opting for a modest 12MP setup, with 1.4-micro pixels, and a 1/2.55-inch sensor. Helping things along are OIS and an f/1.4 aperture, and the 13MP ultra-wide has autofocus, so doubles up as a macro camera.

Motorola RAZR 40

Alongside the high-end RAZR, a lower-cost, small-screen version is set to challenge the perception that foldables are prohibitively expensive. The RAZR 40 / RAZR (2023) launches with a more modest Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, features a larger 4300mAh battery, and a 64MP main camera that pixel bins shots to capture at 16MP by default.

Sticking with its fun colors, Motorola's launching the RAZR 40 / RAZR (2023) in Sage Green, Vanilla Cream and Summer Lilac, and the phone also gets the same wireless charging of its pricier sibling, as well as a large, 6.9-inch, 144Hz, smooth pOLED main display on the inside.

The RAZR 40 Ultra / RAZR Plus is available to buy from today, and the RAZR 40 / RAZR (2023) should be available in the coming weeks.

Motorola has announced its latest body cam, designed for public safety agencies. The V700 uses mobile broadband to connect to the Aware cloud platform and transmit real-time field intelligence.

Body cameras are commonly worn by police officers, doormen, and even those looking to feel safe on a jog. We keep a list of the best body cameras for each situation, but Motorola's V700 is part of a range that targets large-scale use with command-and-control needs – police forces, for example.

"In public safety, outcomes often hinge on an agency’s ability to surface the critical insights necessary to make better, faster decisions,” said Mahesh Saptharishi, Motorola Solutions executive VP and CTO. “The V700’s connectivity to our wider technology ecosystem - from radios and in-car video to command center software - offers an agency unprecedented understanding of an officer’s situation so they can direct the resources needed to be successful in that moment.”

In practice, that means that an officer can pull a gun from their holster and a Holster Aware Bluetooth sensor will trigger recording. If an officer falls or is unresponsive, the V700 will record "giving incident manages immediate awareness" (though Motorola didn't say if the system highlighted their predicament in any way).

Motorola also claims they have a patent on "Record-After-the-Fact" tech meaning, presumably, that the camera is always recording a loop to memory even before you hit record. Similar tech is used on products like the Ring doorbell – perhaps a patent battle is in the offing?

The V700 LTE is on sale now in the United States, and offers 1080P video at up to 30fps, with dual microphones and noise canceling. Motorola says the field-swappable battery will last for up to 14 hours of recording. The rugged device is IP67 and even the battery contacts are even 'self-wiping' to make swapping batteries easier in the dust. 

The camera has a 130˚ horizontal field of view, fisheye de-warp, and can capture in down-to 0.1 lux. Features in the 7oz (197g) device include GPS, Bluetooth 5, Wi-Fi, gyro motion detection, and 128GB storage.

A mono LCD menu at the top of the device allows the user to tag events after recording, but, of course, the real management is designed to be done with the iOS/Android app or CommandCentral.

Motorola is going from strength to strength – finally cracking the foldable nut with the RAZR (2022), delivering a mighty flagship for last year – the 200MP Edge 30 Ultra – and now we’ve got the Edge 40 Pro, one of the finest-looking phones we’ve seen in a long time.

While it’s the Edge 40 Pro in the UK and Europe, Motorola has also launched the Edge Plus (2023) in the US, which packs virtually identical specs save for a slightly larger battery capacity.

Both the Edge 40 Pro sports the latest internals, stacks of power, plenty of storage, and OLED screens with class-leading, smooth 165Hz refresh rates.

At £799 ($800) the Edge 40 Pro is super-competitive given its specs, costing the same as the excellent OnePlus 11, and just undercutting the Pixel 7 Pro.

Interestingly on the photography front, Motorola has opted for an OmniVision camera sensor in its Edge 40 Pro and Edge Plus (2023) – a sensor maker we don’t usually see taking center stage on flagships.

But does this imaging gamble, and Motorola’s notoriously heavy-handed photo processing hold the Edge 40 Pro back from greatness?

MOTOROLA EDGE 40 PRO REVIEW: DESIGN

The Edge 40 Pro is an instant win when you get it in your hand. The curved glass front and back taper into the metal frame, and you’ll be hard-pressed to find a rough edge on this sleekster. 

The phone is relatively light for a flagship-grade handset, weighing 199g. And at 8.6mm and with the tapered design, it’s elegant even if it isn’t the slimmest phone around on paper.

With the front and back constructed of Gorilla Glass Victus and IP68 dust and water-resistance, it’s ticking all the right durability boxes, and available in Interstellar Black and Lunar Blue, whether you’re after a classic or more light-hearted look, Motorola obliges.

When you’re using the phone, the right side is where the buttons live and there’s a USB-C port at the base.

Thanks to the fact its screen isn’t one of the biggest around, the Edge 40 Pro’s footprint should be agreeable to most, and all said and done, this is one of the most balanced-looking smartphones around.

MOTOROLA EDGE 40 PRO REVIEW: SCREEN

With a 6.67-inch screen, the Edge 40 Pro gives you a good amount of space to see movies and messages without being uncomfortably large.

The phone’s Wide Full HD resolution might sound a little low when set against QHD phones like the OnePlus 11, but we couldn’t spot any pixels unless we peered right up close, with the 394 pixel-per-inch pixel density being absolutely fine for the price.

More important than best-in-class numbers, the Edge 40 Pro has a great-looking OLED screen. It’s punchy, calibrated to look vibrant and rich, and helps content pop.

Anyone who wants to dial back the screen’s look can dive into the settings and choose between Natural and Saturated modes, and there’s also scope to control color temperature too.

With 10-bit color, HDR10 support, Dolby vision, and an impressive 1300 nits max brightness, you shouldn’t struggle with seeing content even on a sunny day.

If you think we’re done waxing lyrical about the screen, we haven’t covered its highlight feature – a best-in-class 165Hz refresh rate that’s smoother than anything on the block. 

The competition generally caps out at 120Hz, so there’s no denying that Moto's nailing it with screen quality this time around.

MOTOROLA EDGE 40 PRO REVIEW: CAMERA SPECS

While most high-end smartphones are launching with Samsung or Sony sensors, from the 1-inch Sony IMX989 in the Vivo X90 Pro, to the 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP2 in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro packs a 1/1.5" OV50A OmniVision sensor. Getting into specs, the main camera marries a 50MP resolution with an f/1.8 lens, as well as OIS.

While the ultra-wide camera matches the main camera with its 50MP resolution, its sensor is smaller at 1/2.76", and its lens combines a 114º field of view with a f/2.2 aperture.

Finally, for the rear camera mix at least, the telephoto camera has a 12MP resolution and a super-wide f/1.6 aperture with a 2x zoom, though no OIS.

The 60MP selfie camera seems a bit ridiculous on paper – sixty million pixels worth of detail in a selfie – sounds like a pore-fest. Thankfully for our self-esteem, the Edge 40 Pro’s 1/2.8" selfie sensor actually produces 12MP shots, and they pack modest detail.

Shooting modes are exactly what we’ve come to expect from Motorola: Photo, Video, Slow motion, Portrait, Pro, Spot Colour, Night Vision, Panorama, Ultra-res (50MP), Scan, Dual capture (photo), Dual Capture (video), Timelapse and Spot Colour.

MOTOROLA EDGE 40 PRO REVIEW: CAMERA

The Motorola Edge 40 Pro's photos generally look good until you crop into them. They're loaded with contrast and saturation, and provided lighting is abundant, are sharp too. 

You can see shots captured at three focal lengths below: ultra-wide, wide, 2x optical telephoto, and 16x hybrid telephoto. A bright, sunny day makes the Edge 40 Pro's job a lot easier, and all the images look good in isolation, but when you look at the sky in the first three photos, it's clear that Motorola's colors aren't consistent across all three sensors, making it feel like less of a unified camera system than some phones like the Xiaomi 13 Ultra.

While we can't say for sure, this could have something to do with the fact the three sensors around the back of the Motorola Edge 40 Pro are made by different manufacturers – OmniVision (primary), Samsung (ultra-wide), and Sony (telephoto). 

So while most daylit photos from the Edge 40 Pro look good from a distance, there's room for improvement. When you crop into photos or edit them, though, Motorola's heavy-handed processing holds the camera back. 

Cropped shots have a mottled look, a sign of a lot of sharpening and noise reduction. Meanwhile, trying to edit photos taken in auto mode is like swimming upstream – so much image information has been lost to the processing phase, there isn't a huge amount left to work with.

This might sound very damning, but we are nitpicking – the Edge 40 Pro will absolutely be good enough for most users. That said, it definitely isn't one of the best camera phones of 2023, and if you're a discerning photographer, it probably won't be for you.

The Edge 40 Pro's night mode isn't bad. Shots taken from the main camera are loaded up with detail, though the ultra-wide and telephoto cameras fall behind. Dynamic range is also respectable, as you can see in the shot below with a strong light source and varied exposure across the shot.

If you do pick up the Edge 40 Pro, we'd suggest you lean into the Ultra HD mode, which takes 50MP pictures when there's plenty of light. It dials back the sharpening and processing a bit and makes shots more croppable.

The Edge 40 Pro also has a strong macro mode, using the ultra-wide camera for close-up photos. This does require you to get right up close to your subject which can often result in an unsightly shadow, though the Macro mode automatically activates a 2x digital zoom into the Ultra-Wide, which really helps combat this, and works to great effect on a sunny day. When the lights drop, though, it's less impressive, and you could just be better off shooting with the main camera, then cropping your shot.

The camera we were most excited to try was the telephoto camera. While the 2x reach isn't impressive, Motorola promised us a great experience from the Sony sensor and that wide-open aperture f/1.6 lens. Specifically, it was touted as a portrait lens, however, with no OIS, and hit and miss processing, the camera actually ended up being the weakest of the three.

Selfies taken on the 60MP front camera look flattering for the most part, and automatically soften features a touch. The camera struggles with high-contrast lighting, and low-light selfies are noisy without the screen fill flash brightening things up, but the Edge 40 Pro's front camera is still good enough.

Video is captured at up to 8K resolution if you're happy turning off image stabilization, and 4K if you aren't. Motorola's also introduced a new horizon locking mode, which isn't dissimilar to that showcased on action cameras like the GoPro Hero 11 Black and the DJI Action 3. It's great to see this feature on a phone, and we hope more phone makers follow suit.

Video at 4K and 1080p looks good, even in mediocre lighting, though you'll only really want to use footage shot in bright environments if you need of quality material.

MOTOROLA EDGE 40 PRO REVIEW: PERFORMANCE

With a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro performs superbly. 

Whether gaming, chopping up 4K video, or projecting content to a big screen or desktop UI – more on that shortly – it’s smooth as butter.

The Edge 40 Pro also runs with Android 13, the latest version of Google’s operating system, and with a few fantastic value adds from Motorola laid atop a very stock interface, if you’ve used a Pixel before, the Edge 40 Pro isn’t too dissimilar to Google’s purest Android experience.

One area Moto really nails the software is with Ready For. The feature activates when you hook up your phone to a big screen via the USB-C port at the base, and projects either a Windows-style UI for upgraded productivity, quick access to media apps like Netflix, games, or video calls. 

While we won’t go so far as to say Ready For can replace a PC, if you hook up a keyboard and mouse, it does provide a very usable computer-like experience in a pinch.

With either 256GB or 512GB storage, even with no SD card slot, you should still have plenty of space for apps and content on the Edge 40 Pro.

There’s also biometric security in the form of an in-display fingerprint scanner, and the Pro’s face unlock is pretty nippy too.

When we first saw the phone’s specs, the 4600mAh battery gave us pause – it’s smaller than the 5000mAh batteries in most flagships today. Nevertheless, we comfortably made it through a full day out with the phone. 

An hour of Netflix playback over WiFi at max brightness only drained the Edge 40 Pro by 6 percent, and the fact Motorola crams super-fast 125W charging, and 15W wireless charging only adds to its battery appeal. 

MOTOROLA EDGE 40 PRO REVIEW: VERDICT

The Motorola Edge 40 Pro and Edge Plus (2023) are fantastically specced phones with brilliant screens, tonnes of power, and ample storage for the price. 

Focusing on the European variant, the Edge 40 Pro, its camera is mostly good, but seldom great, and is out-ranked by a few other options at its price.

That means that while the phone, on the whole, is great to excellent in nearly every respect, its camera holds it back. 

So if you’re happy to sacrifice its wireless charging, the OnePlus 11 is a better shout for photographers. Alternatively, if you don’t mind paying a bit extra, the Pixel 7 Pro is still one of the best camera phones at its price. 

If the shots in this review look good enough for you, and you don't need to edit or crop your photos too much, though, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is a brilliant smartphone despite its shortcomings.

Motorola’s been pumping phones out lately, with a collection of budget G-series options, and higher-end handsets – most recently, the Edge 40 Pro and Edge Plus (2023) – but the new Edge 40 sits somewhere in the middle at £529 / roughly $665. 

In a nutshell, the Edge 40 is like any midrange mix – it has some high-end bits, a few compromises, and a lower price tag than alternatives like the Motorola Edge 40 Pro and Edge 30 Ultra. 

Getting into specifics, the Edge 40 has a seriously smooth 144Hz screen, which outclasses much pricier 120Hz competition like the iPhone 14 Pro and Galaxy S23 Ultra when it comes to smoothness.

The phone also has a super-sleek design, measuring just 7.45mm thin, and is available in a fancy vegan leather finish that actually covers the camera frame. If you want color options, Motorola delivers with either Black or Green in vegan leather, or for fans of traditional glass backs, a soft Blue option.

Powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor, the Edge 40 might not pack MediaTek’s top-tier, Vivo X90 Pro Dimensity 9200 power, but for the price, it should perform like a champion.

Matched with an ample 128GB or 256GB storage, the phone also packs plenty of space for files, photos, movies, and more.

Motorola also offers its stock take on Android with at least three years of operating system updates, and four years of security updates, so future-proofing is on-point too.

The phone’s even IP68 water-resistant, which you seldom seen at the price, and its 4400mAh battery powers up at 68W, and ships with a fast charger in the box. According to Moto, that means 15 minutes powers the Edge 40 by 50% which wipes the floor with Samsung and Apple’s nippiest charging speeds.

So, it’s pretty clear Motorola means business with its latest Edge despite its price – but how’s its camera looking? Wide open, thanks to that f/1.4 aperture lens on the main 50MP camera sensor.

There’s also a 13MP ultra-wide camera which doubles up as a macro option for close-up photography, and a 32MP selfie camera too.

While it’s just been announced for the UK thus far, it isn’t beyond reason to expect the Motorola Edge 40 to get a US launch in the coming months under a different name given that’s what Moto did with the Edge 40 Pro. Either way – folks in the UK should be happy – while this midranger will unlikely be the best camera phone of 2023, it could well be one of the best options at its price.

Motorola has announced the global release of its Edge 40 Pro flagship smartphone, a £799 (roughly $1,000 / AUS £1,480) featuring two attention-grabbing inclusions, a screen with a lightning-quick 165Hz refresh rate, and a main camera sensor made by relatively unknown sensor designer – OmniVision.

When compared to big hitters like the OnePlus 11 and Samsung Galaxy S23, its camera mix might not sound that interesting on first impression with its 50MP main camera resolution and a maximum 2x optical zoom, the fact Motorola has opted for an OmniVision sensor to lead the charge could mark a continued shift in flagship smartphone imaging.

While most high-end smartphones are launching with Samsung or Sony sensors, from the 1-inch Sony IMX989 in the Vivo X90 Pro, to the 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP2 in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, more brands are looking to OmniVision, a lesser-known image sensor maker to power their camera experiences of late.

Who is OmniVision?

OmniVision is an American subsidiary of the Chinese company, Will Semiconductor, and its camera sensors power webcams – both for laptops and standalone, surveillance equipment, automotive parts and more. 

When it comes to smartphones, OmniVision is best known for making secondary cameras, like the 2MP macro cameras in many midrange phones. In recent years, though, OmniVision sensors have been climbing the ranks, featuring as primary cameras in more devices.

The first reputable flagship we can recall with an OmniVision main camera was the Lenovo Legion Phone Duel, a gaming phone with a 64MP OV64A sensor. Now, with its Edge series, Motorola, a Lenovo company is clearly doubling down on its relationship with the camera sensor maker, packing a 1/1.5-inch OV50A primary sensor in its Motorola Edge 40 Pro.

Motorola Edge 40 Pro key features

The Moto Edge 40 Pro is a fine-looking, powerful phone that's made of glass and metal. We've spent a week with it, and love how it looks – the screen is curved on all edges, there's a sand-blasted aluminium frame, and it isn't too big, with a low-on-bezel 6.67-inch screen.

Protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, and packing IP68 water and dust resistance, the phone's hardy, and it also ships with a case in the box and a pre-fitted screen protector for some added value.

In addition to that primary 50MP OmniVision camera, the phone has a Samsung-powered ultra-wide which doubles up as a macro camera, and a 12MP telephoto camera, with a Sony sensor matched with a 2x zoom. Most interesting about the telephoto camera is its wide f/1.6 aperture, atypically open for a camera with reach.

Motorola's camera packs a few notable highlights: the inclusion of night vision video, and a new horizon lock feature. There's also a 60MP selfie camera too – powered by another OmniVision sensor.

The Edge 40 Pro should deliver mighty gaming performance with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 power, which is matched with 12GB LPDDR5X RAM. It also has 256GB UFS 4.0 storage, though no SD card expansion options.

The screen also looks set to be a high-point of Motorola's latest flagship with its sky-high 165Hz refresh rate and Dolby Vision credentials. With a peak brightness of 1300 nits, it also gets very bright, so content should be easy to see indoors or out.

Loaded up with wireless charging and very fast 125W wired charging, complete with a charger in the box, it looks like all the specs are on point. So whether or not the phone is the best camera phone of 2023 when we come to review it in the coming weeks will come down to that OmniVision sensor, and Motorola's photo and video processing – check back for our verdict.

The Motorola RAZR (2022) hopes to mark the end of Samsung’s monopoly over the world of folding phones, along with recent contenders like the OPPO Find N2 , Find N2 Flip, and Honor’s Magic Vs. Specifically, it’s a flip phone, so sports a nostalgic clamshell style, going toe to toe with the Galaxy Z Flip 4, which we loved in our time with it. 

But this isn’t the first time Motorola’s launched a RAZR phone. A naughties icon, the original RAZR felt like a slice of the future when it first hit the scene in 2005, and when folding screen phones debuted in 2017, the RAZR was resurrected once more.

The 2017 Motorola RAZR reprise, however, unfolded to a lukewarm reception, as did the 2021 RAZR 5G. A year on, and the 2022 edition hopes to right the wrongs of its predecessors, and, finally, oust Samsung as the champion of flip phones.

Costing £949 in the UK (approximately US$1,160) it’s the first flexible display RAZR to sit below the £1,000 mark. While a US release is still in the pipeline, you can pick it up right now across Europe and Asia. 

But does this lower-cost RAZR pack enough of a punch – especially in the camera department to make it a compelling option for photography enthusiasts?

Motorola RAZR (2022) Design

The main design difference between the last two RAZRs and the 2022 edition is the lack of a chin. Motorola has ditched the bump beneath the display, so the phone’s two halves are uniform in thickness. The phone’s shape, however, still feels very ‘RAZR’ with heavy bevelling, and a rounded top and bottom when open. This is in contrast to OPPO and Samsung’s more classical, cube-like folding phones.

Durability is the first concern when picking up any tech with moving parts, and unlike Samsung, Motorola hasn’t weather-proofed the Motorola RAZR with an official water resistance rating, though it is IP52 water-repellant. That means splashes and raindrops shouldn’t break it. There’s also a hard plastic shell in the box, so you get some material protection too.

When closed, the phone’s glass front and back feel rich. An almost graphite finish, matched with a matte texture, the back plate keeps fingerprints at bay, while the reflective glass front collects them with gusto. Beneath these inevitable fingerprints, is a 2.7-inch touch display.

As for the hinge, it shuts and opens very securely, and the RAZR (2022) can sit partially open between a roughly 45º and 135º angle. Side by side with Samsung’s Z Flip 4, Motorola’s hinge doesn’t feel quite as secure. There’s a slight creaking sound as you travel through the range of motion, and a bit more wobble to the two halves of the phone. 

Practically speaking, in our week with the phone, we didn’t encounter any durability issues. The one nuisance we did experience – a strip of dust gathering along the crease, is also an issue on Samsung foldables, owing to neither phone having a fully closed hinge gap when shut.

Motorola RAZR (2022) screen

The RAZR (2022) has two screens, one on the front when closed, and one inside. They both feature OLED tech, so have punchy colors and rich dynamic range.
Both screens are also easy to see outdoors when the sun’s out, though you’ll want to make sure auto brightness is on, as that unlocks the phone’s 1,000+ nits high brightness mode.

The outer screen is large, and is more useful than that of the Galaxy Z Fold 4, as it can run apps natively, rather than just widgets. This can be great for battery saving when you want to quickly glance at your calendar, or make a quick call.

The main display is where Motorola is really flexing its experience with foldable display tech. It’s a 10-bit screen with a 144Hz refresh rate. At 6.7 inches, it’s a comfortable size for easy swiping and tapping, and with a resolution of 1080 x 2400, it’s also sharp enough – even if it won’t topple the crispest displays out there, like those of the OnePlus 10 Pro and Sony Xperia 1 IV.

When open, the 20:9 display on the Motorola RAZR (2022) is a great aspect ratio for widescreen content. We watched Andor on Disney Plus, and can confirm, cinematic 21:9 shows like the Star Wars live-action franchise showcase minimal crop and look fantastic.

There is a crease along the middle of the main screen, and it’s less pronounced than that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, while being more pronounced than that of the Oppo Find N2 Flip. We didn’t find it to interrupt the user experience at all, and it really does illustrate how far foldable screens have come in the last few years.

Motorola RAZR (2022) camera specs

The Motorola RAZR (2022) has a 50MP primary camera with an f/1.8 aperture lens. The large sensor (for a smartphone) measures 1/1.55-inch, featuring 1-micron pixels. Interestingly, Motorola has opted for an Omnivision sensor – a manufacturer known for supplying budget camera phones. That said, it’s great to see that there’s nothing budget about the spec of the RAZR (2022)’s primary camera, and the fact it’s matched with PDAF, and OIS is a boon.  

The ultra-wide camera combines a 13MP sensor with an f/2.2 lens, sporting a 120-degree field of view. It also features autofocus, which is handy, so it can double up as a macro camera, shooting objects as near as around 4cm.

With up to 8K video recording at 30fps, and 4K at 60fps, video capture specs are competitive too, and there’s an extensive list of modes to shoot in. These include Slow motion, Video, Photo, Portrait, Pro, Spot color (photo and video), Night vision, Panorama, Group selfie, Ultra-res (50MP mode), Document scan, Dual capture (photo and video), and Timelapse.

Motorola RAZR (2022) camera review

If you want a champion camera phone, then the Motorola RAZR (2022) isn’t it. But for a folding phone, and specifically a Motorola folding phone, it isn't too bad.

Just like we found with the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, the first barrier to greatness for any Moto phone is its photo processing. Motorola boosts contrast with its automatic processing too much for traditionalists, so shots look like they’ve already had a whirl through the Instagram filter machine. Dynamic range isn’t great, particularly in shadow areas, and there’s an artificial drama to shots we didn't love.

There are upshots to the RAZR’s photos – they’re generally sharp, colors are balanced, even in challenging scenes, and the large sensor pulls out a pleasing, shallow depth to nearby objects.

What also saves the RAZR (2022)’s camera from a bad review, is that folding phones notoriously have worse cameras than their non-folding counterparts. So the fact it has no telephoto camera, and that its processing isn't as nuanced as some competition isn't a deal breaker in its category.

The phone’s clamshell design, which supports half-folded capture, is also worth mentioning. This means you can rest the phone on a surface while snapping a long-exposure photo. Matched with a comprehensive Pro mode that supports RAW capture, as well as respectable performance from the main camera across lighting conditions, enthusiasts prepared to dive into the camera settings shouldn’t totally write off the RAZR (2022).

Selfies are captured using either the inner selfie camera or the main camera, which activates the front display as a preview. A point to note – the front display is horizontal – not vertical like OPPO’s Find N2 Flip. This is counter-intuitive for photography, as it isn’t the same orientation as the camera sensor alongside it. In turn, it previews with a heavy crop when taking selfies and using it as a viewfinder.

On the plus, selfies shot using the RAZR (2022)’s main camera look excellent. Much better than those using the inner 32MP camera, which should be used mainly for video calls and casual snaps in well-lit environments.

Motorola RAZR (2022) additional specs

Running Android 12, Motorola's folding flagship supports a wealth of apps out of the box – all you need is a Google account to get you off the ground. It's also loaded up with plenty of value adds in Motorola's Ready For feature.

Ready For activates when you plug your compatible Motorola phone into a PC or external monitor and offers different experiences for each.

Hooked up to a Windows device, the RAZR (2022) can display apps, mirror your phone UI, use the handset as a webcam, and activate wired tethering on your computer. 

Hooked up to a display via HDMI to USB-C, the phone can project a desktop UI to the screen, so it's poised for mouse and keyboard productivity. It can also shortcut you straight to big-screen gaming, video calling, or watching with compatible apps like Netflix and Disney+. There are plenty of highlights of this feature when matched with the RAZR specifically, from the fact it outputs to a full 3840 x 2160 monitor, through to the cover screen doubling up as a trackpad. 

The Motorola RAZR (2022) packs stacks of power, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset, and either 8GB or 12GB RAM. Thanks to the fact it also ships with either 128GB, or 512GB storage, it should also give you space for all your files, photos, and videos. Though there isn't an SD card slot, so if you don't think 128GB will be enough, pick up the higher-capacity version. 

Biometric security comes in the form of a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, which is located on the power button, and this securely unlocks your phone whether it’s open or closed. 

With a 3500mAh battery, the RAZR (2022) has one of the smallest cells we’ve seen on any phone in the last year. The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4 has a 3700mAh battery, and the Oppo Find N2 Flip’s battery is 4300mAh.

In real-world use, folks who don’t game for hours or watch tons of content on their phones won’t have any issues making it through a full day. The cover screen is small, but powerful, so should limit how much you engage with the phone’s main battery drain – the main display. Power users who would keep the RAZR open most of the day, though, will definitely struggle to make it through from morning to night, so should look elsewhere.

Unlike Samsung’s folding phones, the RAZR (2022) misses out on wireless charging, though it does support 30W wired fast charging. 

Motorola RAZR (2022) verdict

The Motorola RAZR (2022) is a welcome upgrade for anyone coming from a RAZR or a RAZR 5G. Its design is a little hardier and more refined, its cameras perform better, and thanks to Motorola including Ready For, and a flagship-grade processor onboard, performance is on the money too. 

Speaking of money, the RAZR’s sub-£1,000 price should also be noted. Folding phones are becoming less expensive, and the RAZR (2022) marks a beautiful boost in quality and a drop in price for the line.

Foldable phone cameras still have a way to go, as do Motorola’s phone cameras. But with the trajectory set by the RAZR (2022) suggesting both are going in the right direction, it’s fast become one of the best folding phones out now.

Motorola has become known for churning out capable midrange and budget phones, but it's failed to take on the mightiest camera phone competition – but that changes with the premium Edge 30 Ultra. 

The first seriously high-end phone from Motorola in years, the Edge 30 Ultra combines flagship power with a strikingly elegant design, complete with tapered edges and a slim profile. 

Also headline-grabbing in the camera department, the Edge 30 Ultra is the first phone to bring a 200MP camera system to market.

With tons of pixels spread across a sensor that’s larger than that of an iPhone 14 Pro, it’ll be interesting to see whether Motorola’s Edge 30 Ultra can best Apple's mightiest iPhone to date in the camera department.

While Motorola phones haven't always hit the mark with their photo processing, with any luck, this ultra-premium package will combine great-looking, sounding hardware and upgraded image processing.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra and screen

The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra combines curved glass on the front and back with an aluminum frame, so instantly feels premium. 

It's thin, at 8.4mm, and not too heavy at 198.5g, but it's still a handful thanks to its large 6.67-inch display. Elegant in the hand, rich to the touch, on first impression, the Edge 30 Ultra is a winning piece of design. 

On the bottom side of the phone is a USB-C port, a loudspeaker, and a SIM tray. To the right is a volume rocker and power button, and at the top, a Dolby Atomos insignia, foreshadowing decent quality stereo sound.

Understated, the phone's glass back is finished with a matte texture that has a diffuse look, so doesn't reflect light or hold onto fingerprints with any intention. We reviewed the Interstellar Black model, though it's also available in Starlight White.

All things considered, we’re big fans of the Edge 30 Ultra’s design. It reminds us that Motorola is still relevant in the high-end space, even after years of churning out affordable phones.

Also impressive is the Edge 30 Ultra’s screen. It’s an OLED panel with a 144Hz refresh rate, so looks super-smooth and very punchy. 

Motorola has tuned the colors to strike a fine balance between vibrant and natural, and with its 10-bit coverage, gradients look smooth, and HDR10+ video is supported.

Perhaps one area the Edge 30 Ultra falls behind top-tier flagships like the Oppo Find X5 Pro is resolution. With 1080 x 2400 pixels, Motorola's phone is slightly less sharp than the finest iPhones and Samsung Galaxys. Nevertheless, only real pixel peepers will consider the Edge 30 Ultra unsharp, given it still crams 395 pixels in every inch of screen.

With its beaming 1250 nits maximum brightness, even in sunny climes, it's easy to see what's on your screen, and thanks to a host of customization options within the settings, you can also adjust the display settings to tweak saturation and color balance to best suit your tastes.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra camera specs

The big-hitting news when it comes to the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra's camera is that it features a primary 200MP sensor, which is Samsung's latest, ISOCELL HP1. This is a 1/1.22-inch sensor, which is physically larger than the sensor in the iPhone 14 Pro Max – a mighty spec considering the phone is significantly cheaper.

The 200MP sensor captures 12.5MP photos by default thanks to its 16-to-one pixel binning. The camera also benefits from OIS and a wide f/1.9 aperture lens.

The two other cameras on the Edge 30 Ultra are less standout, with the 12MP telephoto camera only delivering a two-times zoom range and a very traditional 12MP resolution. 

Thankfully, Motorola still includes a competitive ultra-wide camera, combining a 50MP sensor with an f/2.2 aperture, a large 1/2.76-inch sensor, and autofocus. The latter point means the Edge 30 Ultra's ultra-wide camera can capture macro shots as well as traditional ultra-wide landscape-style photos.

The big pixel counts aren't limited to the back of the phone – the selfie camera is a 60MP module with an f/2.2 lens and a 1/2.8-inch sensor – impressive on paper for a front camera. Employing four-in-one pixel binning, it captures 15MP photos as standard.

The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra's shooting modes are very traditional and include Slow motion, Photo, Video, Portrait, Pro, Panorama, Dual capture (across photo and video), Night vision, Document scan, Spot color, Ultra-Res, and Timelapse. 

Ultra-Res is Motorola's brand of 200MP, full resolution capture, while Dual capture takes a photo or video with both the front and rear cameras simultaneously with a split-screen view.

The Edge 30 Ultra's large, high-res sensor can also shoot video at up to 8K resolution, and if you're happy with 4K capture, you can also turn on HDR10 recording.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra camera review

You can see the three optical focal lengths of the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra below as you scroll through the pictures. The photos are taken at three selectable ranges within the UI – 0.5x, 1x, and 2x.

In addition to illustrating the optical focal lengths, the images below also showcase the difference between the three cameras when shooting in challenging lighting. The primary camera is clearly the best performer, gathering more information from darker areas, while the secondary cameras struggle.

While the three cameras don't capture equally impressive photos at night, in bright scenes, they all do at least a good job, though none win us over entirely owing to Motorola's image processing. Photos pack over zealously boosted contrast, so the Edge 30 Ultra's camera hardware is ultimately held back by the camera's processing.

Evenly-lit, light subjects, like the sheet below, captured using the macro mode with the ultra-wide camera, look good and are rich in detail. Darker elements, though, like the coffee grounds, disappear into a blob of amorphous black.

Some will likely appreciate Motorola's pre-filtered aesthetic. Traditionalists, however, will resent needing to dial back contrast or shoot in RAW to capture photos with any dynamic range in the shadows.

Shoot in RAW or with a third-party camera app, including Lightroom, and the results are generally more reliable when it comes to shadow detail. 

Despite our quibbles with the Edge 30 Ultra's heavy-handed contrast, there's a lot we like about its camera system. The ultra-wide camera is powerful, and generally, the camera system's colors looked on point. 

The primary camera's huge sensor also captures beautifully shallow depth of field when shooting nearby subjects, and the Ultra-Res mode retains a lot of detail when lighting is ideal. 

As for the selfie camera, the Edge 30 Ultra's is one of the most flattering around. Turn off all the AI enhancements, and it still applies a beauty filter – there's no way the photo above isn't enhanced in some way to smooth out skin and brighten elements like eyes and dark circles.

All things considered, while the Edge 30 Ultra's camera still falls victim to much of what makes every other Motorola phone inferior to top performers, thanks to its lower price and powerful hardware, the camera system is still a mighty package. This is especially true when it's matched with one of the best camera apps, or if you capture photos in RAW.

While the phone's battery is a bit smaller than many competing options at 4610mAh, it still comfortably saw us through a full day, and the fact it combines very fast 125W charging and 50W wireless charging means that even if you need a midday top-up, it won't take long.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra verdict

If the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra's camera software processed out photos with a bit more nuance, the phone would have been a hands-down five-star option. Its design, screen, performance, and camera hardware all help it shine.

We don't even mind the phone's limited telephoto reach, given the fact it's priced so fairly – significantly less than the priciest Androids or iPhones.

For most, therefore, the Edge 30 Ultra is a very smart option. While discerning photographers will resent Motorola's heavy-handed image processing, there are still ways around this, so while it misses out on being one of the best camera phones of 2023, based on value and overall performance, it's still one of the best smartphones out now.

Bullitt Group, a British company best known for manufacturing rugged phones for CAT and Motorola, and chipset giant MediaTek have announced that together they will power the world’s first satellite-to-mobile messaging smartphone, which they say will launch in the first quarter of 2023.

Unlike Apple’s SOS Emergency SOS via satellite on iPhone 14, the system from Bullitt and MediaTek will enable seamless messaging between the satellite user and another phone on a normal network. This is very different from Apple’s offering, which only lets users communicate with emergency services via message to dispatchers or relay centers where Apple-trained specialists will call for help on the user’s behalf.

New Non-Terrestrial Network chip

It has taken 18 months for Bullitt and MediaTek to enable the addition of direct-to-satellite communication in the next generation of Bullitt-designed 5G phones. Bullitt is the first to use MediaTek’s 3GPP NTN (Non-Terrestrial Network) chipset and as you’d expect with such a breakthrough, proprietary software and service components have also been developed to make the OTT satellite messaging service a reality.

Bullitt explains that the service is intelligent and switches to the satellite link only when no cellular or Wi-Fi connection is available. The service then kicks in and integrates with the user’s existing contacts and so provides a seamless experience communicating with a phone on a regular cellular network, but via satellite link. Impressively, the time to initially connect to the satellite and send a message is around 10 seconds – quicker than Apple’s 15 seconds in good conditions…

Motorola has announced a new budget smartphone, the Moto G Play (2023), which is the successor to the Moto G Play (2021) as we didn’t see a new G Play model this year. Available in the US and Canada it carries a very affordable $169.99 price tag and offers some decent specs including a 5,000mAh battery which is said to offer a three-day battery life.

Moto G Play (2023): Specifications 

The Moto G Play (2023) is a budget 4G-only smartphone that offers an updated 6.5-inch LCD screen, now with a 90Hz refresh rate (up from 60Hz). 

Unlike its predecessor, the Moto G Play (2023) features a 5,000mAh battery, which the company says will give a three-day battery life. 

Camera-wise, there’s a 16MP triple rear camera setup (up from 13MP on the 2021 model) and a brighter f/1.22 lens (up from f/2.0). It has AI-powered features too, including Smart Composition and Dual Capture.

Rather than a Qualcomm processor as seen in the 2021 model, the Moto G Play (2023) has a MediaTek Helio G37 chipset. It comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage (which thank fully can be expanded via a microSD).  

Available in Deep Indigo, the Moto G Play (2023) is IP52 rated for dust resistance and splash protection and also offers a fingerprint scanner. 

While it’s not a phone that will set the smartphone market on fire, if you are looking for a decent but cheap-as-chips smartphone and aren’t bothered about 5G it’s a good option. 

Price and availability 

The new Moto G Play (2023) is set to launch on January 12 in the US, priced at $169.99. It will be available directly from Motorola, Best Buy and Amazon. After the initial launch, it will be available from at Metro by T-Mobile, Dish, Xfinity Mobile, US Cellular, Consumer Cellular, Spectrum Mobile, and Optimum Mobile, although an exact date for this hasn’t been confirmed. The new budget smartphone will also be available in Canada on the same date, through yet-to-be-announced carriers and national retail locations.

It’s official: 200MP is set to become the new standard for camera phones and the latest manufacturer to hit the milestone is Infinix with its new Zero Ultra handset. The company, who formed in 2013, are best known for their affordable smartphones and are the latest to join the 200MP phone club along with Motorola's Edge 30 Ultra and Xiaomi's 12T Pro. Equally as impressive as the huge megapixel count is the device’s epic 180W thunder charge, which can refill its 4500mAh battery in a tiny 12 minutes…

Infinix Zero Ultra: Specifications 

As mentioned above, the Infinix Zero Ultra can manage an ultra impressive 180W thunder charge and refill its 4500mAh battery in 12 minutes (there’s also a standard charging model to preserve the battery cycle), and the super specs don’t stop there. The new 5G friendly phone features a 6.8-inch curved AMOLED display with Full HD+ resolution. Indeed this waterfall display offers a viewing angle of 71 degrees and the company claims it’s more in line with the structure of the human eye. It boasts a 360Hz touch sampling rate and features an in-display fingerprint sensor, too. 

Powered by MediaTek’s Dimensity 920 CPU, the Infinix Zero Ultra comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, which is expandable using a microSD slot. It runs on the Android 12, with Infinix’s own XOS12 interface on top and is available in Coslight Silver and Genesis Noir colorways. 

Infinix Zero Ultra: Camera system 

The main 200MP main camera with optical image stabilisation is joined by a contrasting 13MP ultrawide and 2MP macro snapper, while up front there’s a 32MP selfie camera. 

Design wise, it’s a nice sleek looking device, available in Coslight Silver and Genesis Noir colorways, that comes with a fancy embossed 3D textured glass panel. The company says this “depicts dreamy star trails, creating space and rhythm, hearing the cosmic romance by the tension of life,” – not sure if we’d go that far, but it does look cool. 

Infinix Zero Ultra: Price and availability 

The Infinix Zero Ultra will be released into the brand’s usual markets which have a key focus on emerging markets including Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and South Asia. The phone will cost the equivalent of about $520 / £470 at launch.

Motorola has introduced a new rollable smartphone concept. We’ve previously seen rollable phone concepts from Oppo and TLC, and LG was working on one before they exited the smartphone sphere last year. Motorola's new offering, seen at Lenovo Tech World ‘22, could be the most practical rollable prototype we’ve seen to date… 

Pocket-friendly 

The concept phone starts out at a pocket-friendly 4-inches high and the wraparound OLED panel extends to a normal-sized 6.5 inches with the click of a button. Another click and the phone retracts to the 4-inch form.  

Motorola has demonstrated, as seen in the video above, the rollable phone being usable at both sizes, and demonstrated how the screen content instantly adapts to the screen size. It’s certainly an impressive and practical concept. 

“At Motorola, we see the smartphone as an extension of ourselves – a tool that allows us to adapt to our surroundings and accomplish tasks with ease. Now, we are investing in flexible OLED or pOLED, screens to deliver an optimal balance of content and comfort. The Rollable concept embodies this idea with a screen that adjusts to three distinct states: extended, compact, and peek, with a simple press of a button,” said Motorola via a press release. 

The new rollable concept demonstrated at the Lenovo show comes from the team at 312 Labs, Motorola’s internal innovation group of product, research, design, and engineering experts. 312 Labs explores several emerging technology spaces, and  the company says that one, in particular, is; “reimagining device form factors to solve customer pain points and enable new experiences.” Indeed, this new concept clearly builds upon the display and mechanical innovations Motorola has delivered in the Motorola Razr 2022. 

In addition to the rollable smartphone concept, Lenovo Tech World ‘22 also saw the company debut a rollable laptop PC concept that employs similar technology.

Earlier this week the rumoured Moto G72 appeared in renders online, courtesy of @OnLeaksand Pricebaba, giving us an idea of what to expect. Today, the news has become solid with Motorola revealing the launch date will be October 3 and the new phone getting a landing page at Flipkart, which reveals its key features and design.

Moto G72: specs

The landing page on Flipkart contains a lot of information on the new smartphone. Let’s start with the display – the Moto G72 will feature a flagship worthy billion color 10-bit display, which is visually borderless. It boasts a 120Hz refresh rate with 576Hz touch sampling rate and 130 nits brightness. There’s also an in-display fingerprint sensor.

5000mAH battery 

The new smartphone will be powered by a Helio G99, which is both powerful and battery preserving, coupled with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It will run near-stock Android 12 (no Android 13 update mentioned) and packs a monster 5000mAH battery 33W fast charging. With Dolby Atmos speakers users should be treated to clear, multidimensional sound, too. 

108MP camera

It’s confirmed by the landing page that as rumored the Moto G72 will boast a 108MP main camera. There will also be an ultra-wide, depth sensor and dedicated macro shooter. The landing page doesn’t mention the front-facing camera but @OnLeaks and Pricebaba suggest a 16MP selfie camera, which sounds about right. 

Design wise, it’s a sleek but classic looking phone with IP52 water-repellent design, available in Meteorite Grey and Polar Blue in India but this may extend to black to in other markets, as suggested by @OnLeaks and Pricebaba who leaked the phone earlier this week.  

While we know we will see the camera launch on Monday October 3, we don’t have an insight on pricing yet.

Motorola launched the Samsung Z Flip 4’s biggest rival, the Moto Razr 2022 into the Chinese market last month and it was left unconfirmed if we’d see the phone enter the global market. We wrote at the time that it would be madness for Motorola not to roll their biggest launch of the year out to other regions, and tipsters started tweeting to say the phone was being launched globally. Since then the phone has been spotted on a certification website making it even more likely and now we are treated to some leaked renders courtesy of @evleaks, pointing towards a global release, we are pretty sure it will happen, and imminently. 

Telling renders 

While the promo images of the Motorola Razr 2022 that accompanied the launch last month showed contents of the displays in Chinese only, the renders shared by @evleaks show text in English. If these images are indeed the real deal - @evleaks is a reliable leaker – we can assume these images are intended to accompany the global launch. 

Moto Razr 2022: Specifications 

The Moto Razr 2022, released for the Chinese market last month, has had its large chin trimmed down significantly and features a dual-camera setup on the back. Other design changes include a slimmer and reportedly more durable hinge, which will allow it to be folded at different angles. It’s a far cry from the  Razr 2019 and the 2020 Razr 5G’s display notches, large chins, and single rear camera set-ups – definitely a step in the right direction. 

Under the hood, the Moto Razr 2022 launched in China, boasts a powerful Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, just like the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4. It has a 6.7-inch foldable P-OLED panel with a punch-hole camera cut-out design and great 144Hz refresh rate. The back panel of the new foldable features a 2.7-inch P-OLED display, which can be used as a viewfinder for rear cameras and to check messages etc. 

Sitting above the secondary display, the horizontal dual-camera setup consists of an OIS-enabled 50MP camera and 13MP ultra-wide. There’s also a 32MP selfie camera. Finally, a huge 3,500mAh battery that supports 33W fast charging powers the new foldable, which boots Android 12 OS, overlaid with MyUI 4.0.

Moto Razr 2022: Price and availability 

We eagerly await an official global announcement for the Moto Razr 2022 from Motorola. Pricing is China is very competitive, where it costs 5,999 yuan, which is about $890/£730, so we hope global pricing follows suit.

A week ago, Motorola launched the Samsung Z Fold 4’s biggest rival, the Moto Razr 2022, into the Chinese market. We reported at the time that we expected to see the phone launch for global markets quickly as it would be madness for Motorola not to roll their biggest launch of the year out to other regions. Especially so if they want to be a real rival to Samsung in the foldables market. Now, two tipsters have tweeted saying the phone is being launched globally and the phone has been spotted on a certification website making it seem a sure thing. 

Tipster @rquant tweeted that he had “ No clue why some media are saying the "Motorola RAZR 2022" is only available in China". It sure is coming to Europe as well, so no idea what Moto is communicating, but.......”. In the replies, it can be seen that @DSCCRoss, an arguably more prolific leaker, replied saying that “Volume target is pretty high so should be a global release eventually…”

The two tip-off tweets alone, we would treat with a pinch of salt as they don’t really bring more than our own thoughts on a looming global release to the table. However, in addition to these, the device has appeared on the TDRA certification website (for the United Arab Emirates), via AndroidHeadlines – although not one of the most well-known certification sites, it gives us sound assurance that a global release isn’t far off at all.

Although Motorola cancelled its launch event this week – where the company was expected to unveil the X30 Pro alongside the new Razr foldable – we still get a good look at one of its new smartphones. The upcoming camera phone is tentatively being referred to as the Motorola Edge 2022 and we have official leaked press images thanks to  @OnLeaks and Pricebaba. 

Back in March, serial tipster Evan Blass revealed that Motorola is working on new Edge smartphones with codenames Frontier, Miami, Dubai and Dubai+. 

‘Frontier’ is expected to launch as the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra, ‘Miami’ is likely to launch as the Edge 30 Lite/Edge 30 Fusion. The ‘Dubai’ device has already launched as the Motorola Edge 30 and the ‘Dubai+’ is being tentatively called the Motorola Edge 2022 you see here, but this is subject to change as its official name is yet-to-be-announced. We don’t think it’ll be long before it does launch though, given this official press renders leak.

Motorola Edge 2022: Design

From the leaked Motorola Edge 2022 official press renders we get a good look at the phone’s design. Up front, the display features a centrally positioned punch-hole and a relatively thick bottom bezel. The volume controller and power key are housed on the right edge and it also appears to have an in-screen fingerprint scanner. 

The back panel on the Edge 2022 has curved edges and the Motorola logo can be seen at the centre. From the renders we can see the ye-to-be-released phone’s triple camera on the back featuring a 50MP main module with OIS, plus a 13MP ultra-wide and a 2MP depth sensor. This obviously means that the telephoto module of the original Edge and the 108MP main cam of the Edge (2021) won’t be making a comeback for the 2022 model. 

On the bottom side of the camera phone we can see a speaker grille, a USB Type-C port, a microphone, and a SIM card slot, but no sign of a 3.5mm audio jack.

Motorola Edge 2022: Specifications 

Motorola hasn’t revealed any specifications for the Edge 2022 yet but as always rumor and speculation is rife. The leaked images confirm the expected camera setup, which is also expected to boast a 32MP front-facing camera. Display-wise it is thought to have a 6.5-inch P-OLED delivering Full HD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. It’s also rumoured to have stylus support like the Edge 30 Pro. 

A new MediaTek chip is rumoured to power the device, which is expected to launch with 6GB / 8GB of RAM and 128GB / 256GB of internal storage and a 6,000mAh battery, although there’s no fast-charging rumours. Measurements are said to be 160.8 x 74.2 x 8.2mm, which looks right from the photos.

Motorola has taken to Chinese social media platform, Weibo, to announce the official launch date of the next Razr foldable, the Motorola Razr 3, which we will see launch on August 2. 

It’s a 'dual flagship' launch event that will also see the company launch the Moto X30 Pro, which is eagerly awaited and expected to be the world's first phone with a 200MP camera. The timing of the launch is important as it means Motorola’s new foldable will launch before Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 – which is confirmed to launch on August 10, alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 4. 

Market matters 

So, Motorola’s new Razr 3 foldable will beat Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 to launch by eight days but there’s a major market discrepancy between the manufacturers, which will certainly impact on sales. From the Weibo post, we can realistically assume that, initially at least, the Razr 3 will be a China-exclusive, whereas the South Korean tech giant is expected to launch in worldwide markets from the get-go. 

This is certainly something that will soften the blow of Motorola beating them to launch for Samsung, who will be vying to get the Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Fold 4 a spot in the best camera phones on the market.

Motorola Razr 3: Specifications 

The third-gen Motorola Razr is expected to have true flagships specifications this time round and give Samsung a run for its money. Usually a very reliable leaker, Evan Blass, in association with 91Mobiles has provided alleged images of the new foldable, which shows a full redesign – boxier with no thick chin, curved edges and far more like that of the Galaxy Z Flip 3.

Blass also provides camera intel for the Razr 3, said to come in Quartz Black and Tranquil Blue colourways, saying to expect a 50MP f/1.8 primary shooter alongside a combination 13MP wide-angle and macro. Inside the selfie camera, is said to be a 32MP punch hole. He also notes the repositioning of the fingerprint sensor to the power button, which is good news, too.

The biggest step-up for the Razr 3 is generally expected to be the move to a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chipset. The new foldable smartphone is also expected to have a 6.7-inch 120Hz AMOLED main display and a 3-inch cover display. There’s not long to wait now to find out either!

Motorola is soon expected to add to its Edge 30 series, which currently consists of the Motorola Edge 30 and Motorola Edge 30 Pro smartphones, with a Lite variant and now a telling official-looking image has leaked online, via 91Mobiles. 

Motorola Edge 30 Lite: Specifications 

Codenamed Miami, the Motorola Edge 30 Lite, is expected to feature a rectangular camera island on its back, housing an LED flash and two cameras, as per the leaked image. While the Motorola Edge 30 and Motorola Edge 30 Pro smartphones both feature a triple camera setup, the Lite variant's offering should still be very decent as the photo shows text on its right side confirming a 64MP primary sensor with OIS and a 13MP ultrawide as the other camera. These specs corroborate intel provided by CompareDial and the usually very reliable OnLeaks, last week.  

The leaked image also shows us the back panel as also having Motorola branding at the bottom and Moto logo in the center. This doesn’t look to double up as a fingerprint reader, so it’s a safe bet to assume this is embedded in the power button that sits on the Edge 30 Lite's right side frame, as do the volume keys.

91Mobiles only leaked an image of the back of the phone but the rumor mill has provided extensive specifications. According to CompareDial and OnLeaks, the Motorola Edge 30 Lite will have a Snapdragon 695 chipset, 8GB of RAM and 128GB storage. The front of the smartphone is said to feature a 6.28” OLED panel (FHD+, 120Hz) and 32MP selfie camera. Furthermore, it’s leaked to have a 4,020mAh battery with 30W fast charging as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Lastly, the Motorola Edge 30 Lite is expected to come in Moonless Night, Very Peri, Opal Silver, and Green Fig colorways as cost somewhere around €400, as the Edge 20 Lite was €350 at launch.

Thanks to OnLeaks and CompareDial, we now have pricing and color information for the eagerly awaited Motorola Razr 3. According to the new phone rumors the official price for European markets will be €1,149 (about £1049 / $1099) – significantly less than the 2020 €1,399 launch price of its predecessor, the Motorola Razr 5G. 

OnLeaks and CompareDial have also revealed that the Motorola Razr 3 will initially launch Quartz Black only, adding that the company may have plans to launch additional colors at a later date, which we think is likely.

Motorola Razr 3: Specifications

As seen above the biggest Motorola Razr 3 leak so far comes in the form of a short video by Evan Blass which shows the Razr 3’s folding mechanism and external display in action. We can see the display, how the smartphone fits in the hand, that it unlocks via a side-mounted fingerprint scanner and when folded we can see the outer display too. Furthermore, from the video we can see a dual-camera setup in the bottom right corner and a hole-punch cut-out on the main display. 

Rumors to date have suggested that the Motorola Razr 3 will feature a 6.7inch foldable screen - 8% bigger than the 6.2inch screen on the Motorola Razr 5G and that the cover display will increase from 2.7inch to 3inch. Blass’ video looks to corroborate this. 

The Motorola Razr 3 is expected to launch with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 Plus chip. Previous leaks have suggested that they’ll only be a single model of 12GB RAM and 512GB internal storage initially. Perhaps more variants will appear later on, along with other color options. 

As for the Razr 3’s camera setup, according to XDA Developers, this will consist of a 50MP f/1.8 primary camera and a 13MP ultra-wide camera, with a 13MP camera embedded into the hole-punch cutout on the front, too. 

Motorola Razr 3: Launch date

Although not officially confirmed, the Motorola Razr 3 is expected to launch in China next month, shortly followed by a European and worldwide release. Its biggest rival will be the Galaxy Flip 4, which has recently been leaked to feature Samsung’s strongest 3x camera ever.

It looks like a new megapixel monster is joining the best smartphone cameras, as Motorola China has officially confirmed a new 200MP camera phone is launching this July. The teaser, posted on Chinese social networking site Weibo (via GSMArena.com) by the General Manager of Lenovo's Mobile Business Department in China, says the 200MP camera sensor is a “new benchmark for image experience”.

Although the teaser doesn’t name a specific phone, it’s most likely that this is the flagship Motorola Frontier, which has been subject to the rumor mill since last year, said to come with the now confirmed 200MP camera and next-generation Snapdragon chip. 

Motorola Frontier camera specs 

According to documents obtained by Technik News, the biggest leak/rumor surrounding the phone, the Motorola Frontier will feature a 200MP primary camera, using the new Samsung S5KHP1 image sensor, which can output 12.5MP or 50MP stills, as well as supporting 8K video recording at 30fps.

According to the report, the 200MP camera could be complimented by a 50MP Samsung SKJN1SQ03 ultra-wide lens and a 12MP Sony IMX663 telephoto, making it a very impressive setup indeed. Up front, it’s also said to feature an 60MP OV60A OmniVision camera for selfies. 

As well as using the successor of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and making use of the “Always-On” security feature seen in the current chip, Technik News says the phone will have a 6.67-inch P-OLED curved edge display with full HD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate. 

Rumors elsewhere suggest that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset which will be paired with 8/12GB RAM and 128/256GB storage. The battery is rumored as a 4,500 mAh with 125W wired charging and wireless charging with speeds between 30W and 50W speeds.

Following the unveiling of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1-powered Motorola Edge 30 Pro last month, we are expecting the company to announce the vanilla little brother, which will be the successor to the last year’s Motorola Edge 20 – the Motorola Edge 30 – soon. As the Motorola Edge 30 has been recently spotted on several certification websites including the Wi-Fi Alliance, TRDA, EEC, and now has been spotted on Geekbench, we’re expecting the newest edition of the Edge series imminently.

Motorola Edge 30: Key specifications 

The listing on Geekbench database, brought to our attention by MySmartPrice, reveals some key specifications of the Motorola Edge 30, which was spotted with the model number XT2203-1 previously on the TDRA database. TDRA is a Thai certifying authority that doesn't reveal specs, but luckily Geekbench does. 

Through the Geekbench we know that the upcoming smartphone will be powered by an octa-core chipset with one prime core clocked at 2.5GHz (Cortex-A78), three Gold Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2.2GHz, and four Silver cores (Cortex-A55) clocked at 1.8GHz and be paired with Adreno Adreno 642L GPU. So, this will be the Snapdragon 778G Plus 5G chipset.

Android 12 out of the box

We can also see from the Geekbench listing that the Motorola Edge 30 will come with 8GB of RAM, but there could be other RAM options in the works too. We also learn that the new smartphone will boot Android 12 out of the box. Lastly, the listing tells us that the device scored 821 and 2353 respectively in the single-core and multi-core tests. 

That’s all the information revealed in the Geekbench listing and there have been no credible leaks to date either. However, as the Geekbench listing signifies the launch being imminent, we expect more information to now surface and look forward to seeing what improvements the Edge 30 has over last year’s Edge 20.

Motorola, who is no stranger to flip phones and most recently released the Razr 5G in 2020, has had a new patent for a flip phone design approved by the World Intellectual Property Organisation. The news comes from a report by MySmartPrice and indeed the global patent body showcases sketches of a concept design from Motorola, that uses an outward folding display. This design is in contrast to the inward folding design that Motorola has previously offered with the Razr. Access to the design of the patented phone shows us how the new camera phone will potentially look. 

The patent designs also include the following description of how the design will work: “A display frame for a mobile device includes a first display frame section and a second display frame section. A flexible hinge section couples the first display frame section and the second display frame section. The flexible hinge section enables the first and second display frame sections to bend relative to each other. A first wall is contiguous with the first display frame section, the flexible hinge section, and the second display frame section. The first wall is integral to the first display frame section, the flexible hinge section, and the second display frame section.”

Unique design 

What we would be looking at then is a camera phone with a flexible display on the outward side, meaning that when folded users would get a display on both the front and the rear. While no information is given, a good guess would be that the front and rear would when folded have their own unique features and one of these would likely be as the rear cameras viewfinder. 

From the designs we can see the rear camera housed in a bump, which will probably house other relevant sensors too. A concept is also shown where a single camera module looks to act as both front and rear cameras, so when folded it could shoot rear shots and selfies when unfolded. This would certainly make it an exciting and unique offering.

Motorola appears to be interested in the concept of creating advanced and innovative smartphone technology, after applying for a patent that sees a wrap-around screen display designed for a smartphone device. The patent has been brought to life in new renders that show the screen seamlessly stretching around both sides and edges of the handset.

This concept isn't solely unique to Motorola having been achieved before, though Motorola can now be added to the list of ever-growing smartphone manufacturers thought to be working on a model inclusive of a flexible wrap-around screen technology.

Courtesy of LetsGoDigital, the two patents concerning the newly proposed Motorola device were originally filed first in June 2020, with additional related documents concerning 'Methods and systems for altering virtual button arrangements presented on one or more displays of an electronic device' submitted in August 2021, leading to the final approval and publishing of these patents released on 23 December, 2021. 

Full details of the patent describe the manufacture of a smartphone with housing that is entirely wrapped in a flexible screen. The singular large display of screen surface will cover the front, entirety of the back, and both sides of the device with the exclusion of traditional physical side buttons - such as the volume and various silencing controls - that are to be replaced by virtual in-display buttons.

The bottom of the smartphone is expected to have access to the SIM compartment and USB-C charging port accompanied by a microphone and speaker, with the top of the device hosting an additional mic and speaker with the power button. It remains unclear where Motorola are proposing to place the device's camera system.

With more screen surface, comes more chance to press buttons you didn't intend to or pocket dial a friend. Other features we can expect from this new Motorola device can prevent this from happening with the inclusion of in-pocket detection features, virtual buttons, heat detection sensors and consistent stylus pen support. 

The patent describes that various sensors, such as a motion, temperature and a gravity sensor will be used to measure when the smartphone is in a pocket and how the device will function once removed from your pocket or purse, adjusting the interface of the device accordingly.

The Motorola Razr 5G flip phone is the company's most recent attempt at changing things up a bit, with the Motorola Razr 3 rumored to be expected later this year, but this new patent could suggest they're following the footsteps of previously released models like the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha that has a fully 'Surround Display' design with a similar wrap-around screen surface.

The possibilities that could come from using a device with a wrap-around screen surface still appear to be rather limited. The patent diagram for this newly under development Motorola device explains how an incoming call can be answered without removing the device from your pocket, all that is needed is one tap to reallocate the virtual buttons to be placed on the end of the device. 

While many manufacturers are researching the idea of wrap-around display smartphones, this technology remains extremely expensive and difficult to bring to market at reasonable cost. Though we'll undoubtedly see more of flexible, flip and fold screens, like the Galaxy Z Flip 3, for smartphones developed over the coming years.

The scramble between phone manufacturers to launch the world’s first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1smartphone is over with Motorola claiming the title in unveiling the Edge X30. Sadly, it’s a China only launch, so the rest of us will still have to wait to experience the power of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. Even more annoying is that the Motorola Edge X30 looks seriously impressive. 

Motorola Edge X30 specs 

Motorola’s new offering is very much a flagship phone and will give the best camera phones on the market some tough competition. The company says the coveted Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip offers 20% better CPU performance than the Snapdragon 888, with 30% super GPU performance to boot. Furthermore, the camera phone boasts a 6.7-inch AMOLED display with a FHD+ resolution, 144Hz refresh rate and a 576Mhz touch sampling rate. 

Camera-wise, it’s a great setup. The triple camera on the rear of the phone consists of a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP ultra-wide sensor and a 2MP depth sensor and the front of the Edge X30 is home to a 60MP punch-hole camera. 

The phone, which runs Android 12 out of the box, has a huge 5000 mAh battery, which features support for 68W fast charging. It’s available in four versions, including an 8/128GB model and a 12/256GB one.

Edge X30 price and availability 

The Edge X30 will be available from December 15 in China, with prices starting at 3,199 yuan (£380) and increasing to 3,999 yuan (£475) for the highest spec model. 

Currently, the Edge X30 has only been confirmed in China, so will have to wait with bated breath for Motorola to announce when, and if, the phone will launch in other markets. 

Moto Edge S30 

The launch event also saw Motorola introduce the Moto Edge S30, but before you get too excited – this is simply a Chinese version of the Moto G200, which launched globally recently.

Motorola is set to launch the Moto Edge X30 on Thursday, when it’ll become the world’s first Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 powered smartphone. Now, the company has released an official photo of the new smartphone, via Weibo, which shows off the slim bezels around its punch hole display in the centre. 

Revealed: screen specs 

That’s not all either, Motorola's official Weibo account posted a video clip revealing the Moto Edge X30's screen specs: 144Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ certification, and 1 billion colors.

Motorola hasn’t announced the Moto Edge X30's screen size and resolution, but previous spec leaks, courtesy of OnLeaks, who was right about the 144Hz refresh rate and HDR10+, has suggested a 6.6-inch flat display.

While we know the Moto Edge X30 will be unveiled on 09 December and go on sale in China from 15 December, we don’t get know when the premium smartphone will be available in other markets. 

Edge 30 Ultra specs 

The Moto Edge X30 is expected to launch as the Edge 30 Ultra outside of China and while Motorola hasn’t released specs outside of the screen and Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, or given us a look at the back, a recent leak lets us know what to expect. 

According to OnLeaks, the phone will feature a triple camera setup on the back, housing a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP secondary lens and a 2MP third sensor. It’s also tipped to have a colossal 60MP snapper on the front for selfies and videos – which will make it a contender for best camera phone currently on the market for self-portraits. 

Along with being first to boast the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and impressive screen and camera system, the Moto Edge X30 / 30 Ultra is rumored to have a powerhouse 5000mAh battery, aided by a 68W fast charging support. It is likely run Android 11 with Motorola’s skin on top and be equipped with stereo speakers and an IP52 rating.

With Chen Jin, General Manager of Motorola Mobile Business announcing the Moto Edge X earlier this week, we’re expecting the new phone to launch very soon indeed. Speculation is rife that the new 5G phone will be called the Moto Edge X in some markets and the Edge 30 Ultra in others. Now 91mobiles, together with OnLeaks, has leaked 5K renders, 360-degree video, and specifications of the new phone – very little is left to the imagination.

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra/Edge X design 

The 5K renders show the phone with a punch-hole cutout for the selfie camera, a classic Moto dimple on the back, slim bezels, and flat edges and a new camera module to house triple cameras. 

The power button is seen on the left, while the volume rocker and presumably a Google Assistant key on the right spine. At the bottom we see the USB Type-C port, speaker grille and primary microphone. The back panel is slightly curved towards the edges and houses a rectangular module to house triple cameras, LED flash, and a noise-cancelling microphone. We can’t see a fingerprint sensor, but that could be placed within the display. 

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra / Edge X specifications

The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra will be one of the first to ship with the upcoming Qualcomm Snapdragon 898 chipset. The chipset is said to be paired with 8GB/12GB LPDDR5x RAM paired with 128GB or 256GB UFS 3.1 storage options.

Specifications are courtesy of OnLeaks, who say the new camera phone will flaunt a 6.6-inch flat display with a punch-hole cutout. A recent leak suggested it will feature an OLED panel, 144Hz refresh rate, and HDR10+. The triple camera setup on the back is said to house a 50MP primary sensor, a 50MP secondary lens and a 2MP third sensor. Most excitingly, the phone is rumoured to have a whopping 60MP snapper on the front for selfies and videos, which would surely make it the best camera phone currently on the market for self-portraits. 

According to earlier leaked specifications, the 50MP primary snapper is an OmniVision OV50A lens, the secondary lens is a Samsung JN150 ultrawide sensor, and the 2MP lens is an OmniVision OV20B1B depth sensor.

Adding to the very impressive specifications is said to be a powerhouse  5000mAh battery, aided by a 68W fast charging support. Dimension-wise it’s tipped to measure 163.1 x 76.5 x 8.8mm (10mm including the rear camera bump).

It is likely run Android 11 with Motorola’s skin on top and be equipped with stereo speakers and an IP52 rating. For connectivity options, it’s expected this could include 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, NFC, Bluetooth 5.2, GPS and USB Type-C.

It’s been long rumored that Motorola will bring a Snapdragon 898-powered flagship phone to the market by the end of the year and now we know it’s called the Moto Edge X. The name announcement has come directly from Lenovo – the company that now owns Motorola – with Chen Jin, General Manager of the Mobile Business, posting on Chinese social media network, Weibo, about the new Moto Edge X.

Infinitely powerful

According to the post on Weibo, the "moto edge X” is “infinitely powerful” and people are right to be “full of expectations", although no specifications were revealed. The post was accompanied by a teaser image – a big X. Quite the cryptic teaser! 

Moto Edge S Pro successor 

When launched, the Moto Edge X will be a natural successor to the Moto Edge 20 Pro. The Moto Edge 20 Pro boasts a 6.7-inch full-HD+ flexible OLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate. It’s powered by a Snapdragon 870 SoC paired with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage. It’s triple rear camera setup features a 108 MP primary sensor and has a 16-megapixel selfie sensor up front. A 4,520mAh battery with 30W TurboPower fast charging support completes its main specs. The upcoming Moto Edge X will be launched with more advanced features and technology and is sure to take the crown of best Motorola phone. 

33W fast charging

A Motorola phone with model number XT2175-2 recently received certification from the 3C authority of China and this listing has revealed that the new phone may carry support for 33W fast charging. As the Edge S Pro supported 30W fast charging, it makes sense that its predecessor would top this so this may well be the upcoming Moto Edge X.

Next time someone lectures you about always having your phone at your side, you can point out that for one lucky man, having his phone was what saved his life.

A Brazilian man who was shot during an armed robbery had his life saved when the bullet was stopped by a Motorola phone in his pocket, according to images posted on social media by one of his doctors. What’s more, in a pleasingly serendipitous touch, the phone was housed in an Incredible Hulk case.

Images of the bullet-struck phone were posted on Twitter by Pedro Carvalho, one of the doctors who treated the victim following the attempted robbery in a rural area of the municipality of Petrolina, Brazil. 

The medical team at University Hospital in Petrolina had feared the worst after hearing the man had been shot, but examinations revealed that he had only suffered light bruising to the hip, with the phone and its green-skinned superhero cover taking the worst of the damage. The phone and Hulk absorbed the shot so completely that the bullet didn’t even penetrate the skin!

Reportedly, police did not arrive at the scene in time to catch the would-be robbers, who had already fled the scene. By the time authorities arrive, the victim was already being treated by paramedics. 

The life-saving phone in question was reportedly a Motorola Moto G5, which isn’t currently on our guide to the best Motorola phones. We might have to revisit that – after all, how many of the others can boast that they’ve stopped a bullet? 

With that said of course, there’s no guarantee it would repeat the trick, and we do feel duty bound to caution adventurous readers against wandering through dangerous areas with a phone for protection. You might not be as lucky as our unnamed Brazilian Marvel fan. 

The most important news, though, is that the victim was absolutely fine, and was discharged from hospital and sent home shortly after being admitted, as Dr Carvalho confirmed on Twitter. The same, however, cannot be said for the phone.

A trio of 108MP Motorola camera phones – the Motorola Edge 20 Lite, Edge 20 and Edge 20 Pro – have been announced after a quiet year from the manufacturer in the premium space. 

Motorola hasn’t been quiet in general, launching a bunch of low-cost and mid-range phones with 48MP and 64MP sensors. That said, none have packed Samsung’s now widely adopted 108MP camera sensor – until now.

The Motorola Edge 20 series enjoys a few threads of common DNA: big pixel-count 108MP resolutions sensors, 6.7-inch HDR10 OLED displays (with variable refresh rates), minimalist, matte finishes and 5G mobile data speeds. As for which is the fanciest phone of the three, that would be the Edge 20 Pro, while the Edge 20 sits in the middle, and the Edge 20 Lite is the most affordable. 

Motorola Edge 20 Lite

The Motorola Edge 20 lite starts at a OnePlus Nord 2-beating £349.99 ($490) price, positioning it in the midrange camp. Available in Electric Graphite and Lagoon Green, its main 108MP camera is matched with an ultra-wide / Macro Vision set-up and a depth sensor. Selfie fans are also serviced with big pixel counts, thanks to a 32MP front camera that uses quad-pixel tech (pixel binning) to shoot better photos at lower resolutions across lighting conditions.

What’s also mighty for the price is the fact the Edge 20 Lite features a 6.7” OLED display, which sports a 90Hz refresh rate and wide FullHD Plus resolution. 

Where are the cost-saving compromises to be had? Under the hood, of course, and the Edge 20 Lite packs a MediaTek Dimensity 720 chipset versus Qualcomm chips on the more premium models. That said, it’s matched with 6GB RAM which is ample, and there’s a massive 5000 mAh battery too, so we don’t anticipate any performance or battery woes. 

Vying for the title of best budget camera phone, we’ll see if it can topple the (also 108MP) Redmi Note 10 Pro when we get one in for review.

Motorola Edge 20 

The Edge 20 is Motorola’s slimmest 5G phone ever at 6.99mm. Once again, with a 108MP and a 16MP ultra-wide, the phone also features a OnePlus 9 Pro-matching 3x equivalent zoom complete with OIS. As for the screen, the Edge 20’s display pumps up the refresh rate to a flagship-beating 144Hz, while retaining the HDR10+ goodness seen on the Lite. 

The phone features a 4000mAh battery, which is smaller than the that of the Lite, but its size enable that sleek design. There’s still respectable power, with the Edge 20 powered by a more premium Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G chipset. Costing £499.99 (roughly $700), you can pick up the Edge 20 in Frosted Grey, Frosted White and Frosted Emerald.

Motorola Edge 20 Pro

As for the Edge 20 Pro, it’s the first Motorola phone to feature a periscope camera, which features a 5x equivalent optical zoom packing OIS, alongside the 108MP main camera and 16MP ultra-wide. When shooting with the periscope camera, Moto took great pride in showcasing the handy preview window in the camera UI so you can see what you’re zooming in on in the context of a big picture. The phone also features Dual Capture view, so you can enjoy split-screen selfie / primary camera recording simultaneously. 

Powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 chipset, the same as found in the Vivo X60 Pro, and featuring the same 144Hz screen refresh rate as the Edge 20, the Pro is clearly the most premium of the bunch across the board. As for its battery, it sits in the middle of the other two with a 4500mAh capacity; a standard spec seen in phones like the OnePlus 9 and the Oppo Find X3 Pro.

Available in Midnight Blue and Iridescent White with a glass finish, or in Vegan Leather, the phone also packs options when it comes to styling, and costing £699 (roughly $980), it sits in the low-cost flagship space with other phones like the iPhone 12 Mini. 

Available to buy in the UK in August 2021, with availability in other regions to follow, all three look like camera champs in their price ranges thanks in a big way to that their 108MP sensors.

Motorola has announced the Moto G Stylus 5G, an update of the already-existing Moto G Stylus that was launched back in January 2021. This new 5G-compatible update continues to feature a built-in stylus for users to easily take notes, draw or edit images. 

However, the Moto G Stylus 5G also has some interesting updates too. The new Snapdragon 480 5G processor will ensure zippier internet speeds, while the increased 6GB of RAM and doubled 256GB internal storage will make the general user experience even better.

Meanwhile, as reported by T3, the Moto G Stylus 5G has some small camera updates as well. The original Moto G Stylus featured a quad camera with a 48MP main camera, an 8MP ultra-wide camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. Most of this remains the same, but the macro camera has been upgraded from 2MP to 5MP. This means users should be able to enjoy higher quality close-up macro images from their handset. 

The previous Moto G Stylus featured a fingerprint unlock function. However, this has now been moved from the side of the handset to the back. Motorola has also added a Face Unlock function as well. 

The Moto G Stylus 5G will retail at $399.99 unlocked (£283 / AU$517). It will be available across multiple networks in the US, included AT&T and T-Mobile. However, there currently aren't any plans to bring this camera phone to Europe or Australia. 

The Moto G Stylus 5G will run Android 11 and looks to be a great mid-range camera phone that many users will be happy with. Its bumper list of features and affordable pricing will certainly make it a tempting proposition to many.

Just a few days after we tested out the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2, the most specced out foldable around, another flexible phone has arrived — the Motorola RAZR 5G, which is another contender for being the best flip phone of 2020. It’s the update to last year’s incredibly cool, but much criticized refresh of the iconic 2014 RAZR, and comes complete with improvements in every area. 

Whizzing through those upgrades, and the 2020 RAZR gets a more premium finish despite being lighter. It also sees internals boosted — a newer, faster chipset with 5G support, more storage and RAM, as well as a higher capacity battery. Most exciting for us, the Motorola RAZR 5G has a new main camera.

On the outside of the RAZR 5G is a 48MP single camera, versus last year’s 16MP main camera on the RAZR 2019. On the inside, your selfies are upgraded from 5MP to 20MP this time around. Compared to last year’s model therefore, the new RAZR is smashing it. Compared to every other $1,200 handset on the market though? Not so much; at least not from a specs point of view - but what’s it like living with the best throwback foldable on the block?

Design and screen

It flips open and folds, it’s got a screen on the front and it’s made by Motorola — the RAZR’s design is what time machines you back to 2004. Last year’s RAZR succeeded in bringing folding screen tech to the line while staying true to the original’s styling, but it was widely panned after some damning durability tests surfaced. This time, Motorola has refined everything.

The RAZR 5G’s front and back are curved glass and feel fantastically smooth. There’s 7000 series aluminum holding everything together, with the matte, blasted metal, contrasting the glass nicely. 

This time around, Motorola has moved the fingerprint scanner, which was on the chin of last year’s RAZR, to the back of the 2020 edition. On paper, this seems like a smart move - less clutter on the front. That said, it’s too low, a bit awkward to fumble and find, and in our experience, the move was a minor misstep. 

The external display is the same as that of last year’s RAZR - 2.7 inches, sporting a 600 x 800 resolution, and packing OLED technology of the non-flexible variety. What we love isn’t so much the tech behind it, it’s the way Motorola loaded it up with functionality. You can watch a YouTube video on it, read your Google News update, and there’s even an 8-bit-style game you can kill a couple of minutes with. As great as the front-screen is though, unfurl Moto’s clamshell, and the full RAZR experience ensues.

Combining a 6.2-inch flexible OLED screen size with a 876 x 2142 resolution, the main folding display is very traditional specs-wise, aside from the whole folding party trick. Unlike Samsung’s Z Fold 2 and Z Flip, the Motorola RAZR 5G’s screen doesn’t develop a crease in the center. 

Motorola’s smart engineers designed the foldable’s display to move. It slides into the chin of the phone when it closes, so there’s less screen left to crumple or crease at the hinge. Meanwhile, the folding part of the screen actually bends to fill the hinge cavity, preventing a full-blown crease. This genius move might make the RAZR the best mechanical implementation of folding screen tech on the market today, but that doesn’t make it the best foldable.

The phone’s utility falls behind that of the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 — this isn't’ a tablet and a phone, it’s just a phone. Additionally, it sports a mono-speaker at the base, and just one rear camera - so definitely isn’t one of the best camera phones of 2020. 

Cameras

The Motorola RAZR 5G’s main camera module features a 48MP resolution, with an f/1.7 aperture and a 26mm focal length. It also shoots 4K video at 30fps. If you think this is the tried and tested Sony IMX 586 sensor found in everything from the OnePlus 7T through to the OPPO Reno 4 Pro, think again. The RAZR 5G’s sensor is a Samsung ISOCELL GM1 - and that’s not great news. The GM1 tends to fall behind the IMX 586 when it comes to clarity, and as we’ll come onto - the RAZR’s images suffer as a result. 

As for the front camera, it’s another Samsung ISOCELL sensor, only this time, a 20MP sensor with an f/2.2 lens, capable of shooting up to FullHD video at 60fps.

Shooting modes are predictable with a few highlights: Spot Color, Night Vision and Pro mode, which offers up a max shutter speed of 32 seconds, and a max ISO of 3200.

Camera performance

Kicking off with detail and despite the fact the Motorola RAZR’s main lens is stabilized, the camera as a whole isn’t one of our favorites. In anything but outdoor daylight, shots taken on it lack a crispness that we’ve grown accustomed to on smartphones today unless you hold perfectly still. There’s a shallow depth to close-up photos that looks great, but you may find yourself taking a couple of photos to get the image you want, or missing the moment all together. The phone definitely handles subjects a bit further away better - suggesting there might be something focus-related going on too.

Images captured on the Motorola RAZR 5G aren’t just lacking detail, they look actively over-softened. Compared to even a Pixel 4a, which costs $349 / £349, the RAZR just can’t hold its own with dark, textured objects. 

While low light photos are poor in automatic mode, the night mode isn’t bad at all, picking up the exposure by shooting multiple photos and creating a usable image. Dynamic range is respectable in brighter scenes — so skies tend to look decent, but dark spots are averaged out and softened. 

The lack of a telephoto and ultrawide camera are also felt, so in case the above wasn’t clear enough - don’t pick the RAZR 5G up on its camera merits. It’s fine, but seldom better than that.

The camera captures 4K video at up to 30fps, and while once again, clarity isn’t as on-point as the competition, the steadying combination of OIS and electronic stabilization come together well to keep things stable. As for the 20MP selfie camera, it captures 5MP photos, which might sound low, but results are sharp enough to look clear, but soft enough to be flattering. 

Motorola RAZR 5G: Additional specs

Powered by a Snapdragon 765G paired with 8GB RAM, the RAZR 5G has the same chipset as the OnePlus Nord (£379 / approximately $495) and the Google Pixel 5 ($599 / £599).

The RAZR’s storage capacity is a generous 256GB, which is paired with 8GB RAM — plenty of both. Running Android, the Play Store gives you access to a huge number of apps and games, and most run without any slowdown, despite the chipset’s middling power. The issue you may run into is screen optimization. A few games we played didn’t fill the whole screen. Instead, they were bordered by an entirely unnecessary black letterbox — gamers, be warned. 

The RAZR 5G’s 2800mAh battery, which charges at up to 15W is a bump up over last year’s 2510mAh cell. If you’re using it casually, you’ll make it through a day. The front screen suffices for answering calls, replying to quick messages and toggling quick settings. If you plan on unfolding a lot, watching, gaming, or doing much beyond the basics, you’ll be running low on battery by the early evening. 

Motorola RAZR 5G: Verdict

How much are you really willing to pay for nostalgia? Motorola hopes it’s around $1,399/ £1,399. You’re reading Digital Camera World, so, with its underwhelming camera - there’s no way we can recommend the RAZR 5G on its imaging merits. That’s not the draw of this phone though. 

If you liked the idea of the RAZR 2019, but were put off by the mixed reviews, the RAZR 5G is as good as it needs to be to deliver a decent user experience. It's a competent smartphone with decent performance, plenty of storage and one awesome party trick.

The premium on foldables is still too high, and the RAZR 5G is far from perfect. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 2 though, it’s an important phone that makes the case that foldables are one step closer to the prime time - bring on 2021.

UPDATE 10/09: The Motorola Razr 5G has been officially announced as the successor to last year's Motorola Razr 2019. This new update on one of the best flip phones has a Snapdragon 765G chipset, 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. On the front of the closed phone it has a 2.7" outer screen gOLED with 800 x 600 resolution. Meanwhile, on the inside of the open phone it has a 6.2" pOLED screen with 876 x 2,142 resolution.

The Motorola Razr 5G has a water repellant design, a 2,800mAh battery, offers support for 15W charging and runs Android 10. Interestingly, more apps will now work on the external screen – such as the camera, messages, calculator, Google Home, YouTube and more. It also offers support for gesture navigation as well.

In terms of the camera capabilities, the Motorola Razr 5G has a single 48MP rear camera with an f/1.7 aperture, Optical Image Stabilization and laser autofocus. Meanwhile, the front-facing camera has a 20MP sensor and features an f/2.2 aperture. 

The Motorola Razr 5G will be out in China and 'select European markets' at some point during fall, with other countries following later. It will be available in Polished Graphite, Liquid Mercury and Blush Gold. 

ORIGINAL STORY: Fifteen years ago, the Motorola Razr was arguably the coolest phone on the planet. Even today's most powerful smartphone, with all the accompanying bells and whistles, couldn't hope to compare to the extraordinarily satisfying snap of ending a call by flipping your Razr shut. Thankfully, in 2019 the Motorola Razr was brought back to life as a foldable smartphone to help bring mid–noughties nostalgia into the smartphone age.

Now it seems we're going to be getting a second generation of this foldable smartphone. Images of the Motorola Razr 2020 have recently leaked, showing a device that hasn't veered too far away from the design of the 2019 Razr. 

Images leaked by Evan Blass (via GSMArena) show the Motorola Razr in three stages, open, partially closed and fully closed. The selfie camera notch at the top of the main screen remains, but there doesn't appear to be a fingerprint scanner at the bottom of the phone like there was on the 2019 version. 

The Motorola Razr 2020 (also possibly called the Motorola Razr 5G) will have a Snapdragon 765 chipset, which will also mean 5G support. In addition, the upcoming Razr will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage paired with a 2,845 mAh battery. We'll also see a step up from the 2019 Motorola Razr's single 16MP camera. Instead, the Motorola Razr 2020 will have a dual rear camera with the main camera featuring a 48MP sensor and the secondary camera using a 20MP sensor. 

The Motorola Razr 2020 will apparently run Android 10 and, even more interestingly, the outer screen on the front of the closed phone will be larger in this updated version.

We recently became aware of the existence of the Motorola Edge Lite through an FCC certification. However, it didn't take long for the full specifications for this upcoming camera phone to be leaked. The Motorola Edge Lite will join the Motorola Edge and Motorola Edge Plus as the most budget-friendly member of the Edge family. 

The Motorola Edge Lite will have a quadruple camera unit arranged in a vertical line down the left hand side of the back of the phone. The main camera will be 48MP and it'll be joined by a 16MP, an 8MP and a 5MP.

Meanwhile, as reported by GSMArena, on the front of the phone there's a dual hole-punch cutout in the top left corner that houses two cameras. One is an 8MP selfie camera and the other is a 2MP time-of-flight camera next to it. 

The Motorola Edge Lite will have a 6.7" 1080x2520 panel with a 21:9 aspect ratio and a 90Hz refresh rate. It'll also have an in-display fingerprint sensor – although there's no word yet on whether it'll also feature Face Recognition like the original Edge and Edge Plus do. 

This upcoming handset will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 765, which is the same chipset housed in the Edge (the Edge Plus uses a Snapdragon 865 SoC). There will be at least two version of the phone, one with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage and one with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The Motorola Edge Lite will also apparently have a 4,800 mAh battery with 18W fast charging and will connect through USB-C. 

For anyone wondering whether the Motorola Edge Lite will follow in the 5G-compatible footsteps of its predecessors, the Lite will indeed support 5G. It will also run Android 10 and will be offered in four different colors, including Prussian, Surfing Blue, Azury and Soft White. 

In terms of pricing, the current rumor is that we'll see the entry level version of the Motorola Edge Lite being sold for €399 in Europe. However, we've yet to see any further information on what the official pricing will be in the US or UK.

When the Motorola Razr was relaunched in November 2019, there were plenty of tech fans excited to see how Motorola had updated the classic Razr design for the smartphone era. However, once the phone finally launched in early 2020, many were left disappointed with the questionable build quality and the very expensive price tag. Luckily, Motorola is soon to release its do-over – the (unofficially named) Motorola Razr 2.

The Razr 2 is expected to arrive in September and will apparently come with a 6.7" main display, which is 0.5" larger than the current iteration of the Motorola Razr. It's also been rumored that the secondary external screen on the Razr 2 will be larger than the current Razr's 2.7" secondary display, but the source hasn't specified by how much.

This information comes from Ross Young, the CEO of Display Supply Chain Consultants, via GSMArena.

With 5G as the future of smartphone technology, it was disappointing when the original reboot of the Razr arrived with standard 4G capacity. However, there have been rumors that the Motorola Razr 2 will be 5G-capable, as it'll reportedly be using the Snapdragon 765 SoC. 

There have also been reports that the Motorola Razr 2 will have 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. While it seems that the Razr 2 will be sticking with the single-camera unit design, it will be given a megapixel boost from 16MP to 48MP. The selfie camera will also be taken from 5MP to 20MP.

Motorola has launched its long-awaited flagship phone, the Motorola Edge+ – and it's gunning for Samsung's top slot, with a 108MP primary camera, 6K video and 5G super speed. 

Already looking like one of the best camera phones, the headline feature of the Motorola Edge+ is its triple-camera array with a 108MP primary rear camera. This boasts an f/1.8 aperture, optical image stabilization and Quad Pixel technology for four times the light sensitivity to cope with shooting in low light conditions.

That's accompanied by an 16MP f/2.2 ultra-wide with a 117° field of view and Macro Vision mode, an 8MP f/2.4 telephoto with 3x optical zoom and stabilization, plus a dedicated time of flight depth sensor. The front-facing selfie camera is a 25MP f/2 affair, with the same Quad Pixel tech as the main camera.

Then there's the formidable video, with the primary camera capable of capturing 6K video at up to 30fps, 4K 30fps, and 1080p 30, 60 or 120fps – all supported by dual  optical and electronic image stabilization. And while the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra offers 8K it is quite compromised, so Motorola's 6K is probably preferable.

A video snapshot mode enables you to extract a 20MP still image from your footage, and the time of flight sensor enables a video portrait mode with software-driven background blur to isolate subjects. 

The Motorola Edge+ is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset and is 5G-enabled with both mmWave and sub-6GHz frequencies, promising worldwide compatibility and future speeds in excess of 4Gbps. 

The impressive 6.7-inch, 21:9 ratio Endless Edge screen folds almost 90° around both sides of the handset, featuring HDR10+ and a 90Hz refresh rate, and Motorola promises that the 5,000mAh battery will provide two full days of use. In short, the Edge+ is set to be an absolute beast.

Accompanying the flagship phone is the standard Motorola Edge, which boasts largely the same specs but switches the primary camera for a 64MP f/1.8 unit, and features a Snapdragon 765 chip and 4,500mAh battery.

The Motorola Edge+ will be available in the US on 14 May exclusively at Verizon for $999.99, and in Canada at Rogers, Bell and Telus. It launches in Europe the same month for €1,199, though will not be coming to the UK. 

The Motorola Edge launches in Europe and the UK in May, starting at €599, and will roll out in the US and Canada in the following months.

The Moto G-series has always showcased how well Motorola makes budget camera phones with an edge. The first Moto G rewrote the affordable smartphone rules, and eight generations later, the Moto G8 Plus has crammed a 48MP camera into a relatively low-cost handset. Now, it looks like the Lenovo-owned smartphone maker’s next frontier for its Gs is pen input, with recent leaks pointing to the name - Moto G Stylus.

The rumored phone name was shared by prolific tech leaker @Evleaks, shortly after a render surfaced showcasing an all-screen display with a punch-hole camera, and of course, that pen. Additional details reveal the phone’s codename – Sofia+ – which suggest it to be a variant of the G8 Power, another phone expected to launch this MWC.

If the G Styles shares the same internals as the Power, then specs look set to include a FullHD+ display, a Snapdragon 665 chipset, 4GB RAM and 64GB storage. In addition to the punch-hole selfie camera, there will likely be a multi-camera set-up around the back and Motorola’s trademark Turbo Charge feature delivering anything from 18W through to 45W charging as seen on the US variant of the Moto One Hyper.

Given the expected specs, Samsung doesn’t have much to worry about here. With the Korean brand’s Galaxy Note 10 and Note 10 Lite both packing relatively top-tier internals, Motorola’s rumored G Stylus will be going after a more cost-conscious type of phone user. That said, it could be the lowest entry point to decent pen input on-the-go and something fresher than another pixel-tastic candy bar smartphone, so we’re jazzed to see what Motorola ends up unveiling at Mobile World Congress on the 23 February 2020.

Fans of folding phones should hold onto their hats, as we now have information on the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip – the Korean manufacturer's latest folding camera phone, which features a clamshell configuration. 

The leaks just keep on coming ahead of Samsung's Galaxy Unpacked event on 11 February, where the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip is expected to be announced. First we had the full set of camera specifications leak for the Samsung Galaxy S20 lineup, and now we have intel on the company's next generation of folding phones.

A follow-up to the Samsung Galaxy Fold has long been in gestation, as evidenced by all the smartphone rumors revolving around Samsung's many patents for various folding, bending and wrapping screens.

For whatever reason, however – whether it's to distance itself from the beleaguered Galaxy Fold brand, or simply to launch a companion product line – the new phone will have a completely different name in addition to a different design. 

Where the Galaxy Fold featured a book-like design, the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip features a traditional clamshell design featured in old school phones – and recently resurrected by the cult classic Motorola Razr, which is a direct rival to Samsung's new product. 

Originally codenamed Samsung Galaxy Bloom, the first information on the new phone was revealed by leak impresario Ice Universe (via GSM Arena), who confirmed the new moniker, leaked an image of the handset, and revealed that it will use ultra-thin glass material rather than the plastic of the Fold (resulting in a screen that's flatter, thinner and potentially wrinkle-free).

Precious little else is known about the Z Flip, other than it appears to feature a centered punch-hole for its front-facing camera (believed to be 10MP). GSM Arena was also able to uncover that it comes with a 15W charger, and believes that it features a dual camera array on the rear with last year's Snapdragon 855 processor – meaning that this will likely be a junior alternative to the higher end Fold. 

LetsGoDigital – which also generated renders of the expected design (seen at the top of the page) – posited that the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip might be available as early as April or May, the intended release window for the Fold. It also noted that sources have claimed a price tag of anywhere between $800 and $1,500 (for reference the Fold retails for $1,980 / £1,900 / AU$2,999). 

With Samsung's official announcement just weeks away, we won't have to wait long to find out.

The Motorola RAZR V3 was an icon when it launched in 2004 nuzzled in the hands of celebrities and across glossy spreads around the world. Whether you were a celebrity or not, there’s a good chance you or one of your friends had a RAZR, given the fact it was the best-selling flip-phone of all time, shifting more than 130m units. 

With the rise of the smartphone, though, Motorola lost its footing for a few years, was bought and sold by Google and now lives as part of Lenovo, the Chinese tech giant, who has resurrected the brand as a midrange champ.

Now, Motorola’s most exciting phone to date, the RAZR has also been reinvented and looks like it will be the second foldable phone set to go on sale in the UK and US. 

Design and screen

The new RAZR is all about flip-phone design and a folding screen. A quick glance over its specs and you’ll see that they’re middling for a phone of the RAZR’s price, but everything from the midrange chip to the single rear camera was chosen to enable this folding phone to carry forward the RAZR name and fit in the palm of your hand. 

In a nutshell, or clamshell, when closed, the new RAZR has the same thickness as the original - 14mm, making it a compact device with a front screen that offers basic functionality. 

Flip it open, and a 6.2-inch, 21:9, 876 x 2142 display unfurls within. The RAZR’s chin has returned below it, housing the brains of the phone within and a fingerprint scanner on the front. The sole primary 16MP camera is below the smaller, secondary display on the front when the phone is closed.

The reason the RAZR is getting such a good reception with press isn’t just nostalgia - it’s the utility of Motorola’s design. Flexible OLED displays are plastic which scratches easily; so having them wrap around the phone and always exposed is a terrifying durability prospect - that’s one of the reasons we reckon the Huawei Mate X has taken so long to hit the market - other than the political situation Huawei’s in the US government, of course

If the screen folds inwards though, as with the Samsung Galaxy Fold, then there’s a gap in the crease when closed, which is a weakness from a design point of view and a dust trap. The Galaxy Fold was recalled and relaunched with a pushed back general release because it was too fragile - so Motorola had to do something different.

With the help of two metal plates, an ingenious stainless steel hinge and a screen that actually slides a couple of millimetres into the phone’s chin when closed, Motorola has managed to create a zero-gap fold that makes this flip-phone feel incredibly robust for a device with moving parts.

How the RAZR fares in the real world remains to be seen, but Motorola is offering a two-year warranty for added peace of mind.

Camera

As with most of the specs, imaging has taken a bit of a backseat when compared to most flagships on the new RAZR, with a sole 16MP primary camera with an f/1.7 lens and Dual Pixel PDAF. 

There’s also a ToF camera alongside it for depth perception, and inside, a 5MP selfie camera housed within the notch - that said, you probably won’t use it for selfies. Instead, the main camera can engage the mini display as a viewfinder so you can snap-happy when the phone is closed. This way, your selfies are coming from the best camera on the phone - similar in principle to the ZTE Nubia Z20.

Additional specs

Motorola ran through the design process of the RAZR with us and explained that in order to create a phone with the RAZR’s form factor, they needed to go with an upper midrange chipset - the Qualcomm Snapdragon 710. The reason for this is primarily heat management, and battery consumption, given the fact that there's only a 2510mAh cell inside - a smaller capacity than in most smartphones.

All this wouldn’t be particularly difficult to stomach if the phone was affordable, but at $1500 (UK price has yet to be announced), it’s anything but. Still, as a design-led proof of concept and a slice of the future for anyone with the cash to splash, we can’t help but be impressed here. If this is, indeed the shape of foldables, when prices drop and specs climb a little higher, it’s looking a whole lot more promising than it was before the RAZR arrived.

15 years ago, the Motorola Razr was one of the most sought after mobile phones around. But back then the clamshell design, that folded open to take calls, was the norm. In the intervening decade or so the flip phone has all but disappeared... but the iconic design is set to make a comeback from company that made the clamshell handset famous.

The Motorola Razr 2019 is more than just a new take on one of the companies most famous phones from the past. The new Razr provides Motorola's take on the fold phone... a new breed of smartphone that has a big screen that folds in half to make it fit more easily in your pocket. The pioneering Samsung Fold Phone has just gone on sale, after some teething issues with its hinge mechanism, which opens up more like a book than a traditional clamshell.

The Razr 2019 is set to go on sale in January in the USA at a cost of $1500, with preorders opening at the end of December. As such this will be one of the most expensive handsets on the market, but will undoubtedly becoming one of the most desirable camera phones, particularly amongst those who remember the Noughties. Avaialability and pricing in other countries has yet to be announced.

The new Razr does not need to be opened for all uses, as there is a front LCD screen too. The internal fold screen extends to  6.2-inch 2142 x 876 pixels POLED (plastic OLED with a 21:9 aspect ratio. 

The smaller Quick Display external screen is 2.7-inch GOLED (glass OLED), with 800 x 600 pixels and 4:3 aspect ratio. This functions much like a smartwatch, letting you see text messages, say, without unfolding the phone. 

The phone uses a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor with 6GB RAM, and comes with 128Gb of storage. The batter is a 2510mAh, which still promises a day's worth of use, as the fold design an mid-tier processor means the phone is designed to be energy efficient.

The camera capabilities are rather plain compared to other recent handsets from Motorola and others. There is just one rear camera - a 16MP f/1.7 affair - although thanks to the fold can be flipped to be used as the main camera or as a selfie cam. There is a secondary 5MP internal camera that is used for things as facial recognition to unlock the phone.

Having just lifted the lid on three new smartphones, the Moto E6 Play, Moto G8 Plus and the Moto One Macro, Motorola has further flooded the market with midrange budget camera phones - but with a dedicated 2cm macro lens, it’s the Moto One Macro that’s piqued our interest the most.

Packing midrange internals, a triple rear camera setup, huge battery and generous amounts of storage (the same starting capacity as the iPhone 11 and Pixel 4), we can’t fail to be impressed, given the Macro’s price.

Motorola Moto One Macro price and release

The One Macro costs £179.99 and is available in the UK from the 28 October, with a US release yet to be confirmed. There’s one capacity - 64GB, and it will be available from Amazon UK, John Lewis, Carphone Warehouse, EE and Argos. 

Motorola Moto One Macro features

Despite having a plastic body, the Moto One Macro doesn’t feel or look particularly cheap. It’s high-gloss plastic frame and back emulate glass, and when sheathed in the soft-touch case, included with the phone, doesn’t really matter that it isn’t made of the stuff.

The screen’s a 6.2-inch HD+ panel, not a Full HD resolution display as found on some sub-£200 phones. With a sharpness of 295PPI though, it’s hardly dull, and the size is a decent balance of large and manageable. 

The One Macro runs Android 9, Google’s OS, in tandem with some very light touch additions from Motorola. Powered by a MediaTek MT6771 Helio P70 processor which is paired with 4GB RAM, this isn’t a power-beast, and at the price, we wouldn’t expect it to be. That said, day-to-day tasks should be more than manageable, and the fact there’s a generous 64GB storage on-board too, as well as microSD card expansion up to an additional 512GB only adds to the phone’s value proposition.

Add to the mix a hefty 4000mAh battery and you get an impressive mix in the Motorola One Macro - but what about those cameras?

Motorola Moto One Macro: camera

The main camera on the One Macro is a 13MP, f/2.0 module with a 1/3.1” sensor and 1.12µ pixels, as well as phase detection and laser autofocus.

Next up, there’s that namesake macro lens with its f/2.2 aperture, combined with a 2MP 1/5“ sensor and 1.75µ pixels. Finally, there’s a 2MP depth sensor with exactly the same specs as the macro camera - this enables bokeh and foreground/background separation effects.

The macro camera has its own mode, and if you forget to fire it up, the camera UI will prompt you to make the switch, though be warned, unless lighting is fantastic, macros shots will be relatively low on detail and muddy, given the 2MP sensor resolution.

The phone captures video at up to Full HD resolution, 120fps from the rear camera, and the 8MP f/2.2 selfie camera grabs Full HD video at 30fps.

Motorola Moto One Macro: Early verdict

We’ve had a bit of time with the Motorola One Macro’s camera, and have managed to get a couple of cracking shots and a couple of pretty terrible ones - it’s definitely not one for casual snapping. 

That said, its main camera seems to do a decent job for the price when paired with a steady hand. In turn, if the power under the hood checks out, then for £179.99, it’ll be yet another stonking midranger from Motorola – watch this space for the full review.

The Motorola Moto G8 Plus is official, loaded up with a 48MP triple-camera system, it features the same action-style ultra-wide camera introduced on the One Action, which captures stabilized landscape video even when the phone is held in portrait orientation. 

The G-series is an old faithful when it comes to premium features at affordable prices, with last year’s G7 Plus delivering OIS and seriously fast charing. This year, Motorola’s added another speaker, a newer processor, and more pixels to the mix, both on the front and back.

Thanks to a depth sensor and laser autofocus, as well as 4K video capture, given the price, it’s impressing on the specs front, and with Motorola’s track record, we’re expecting good things in the real world too.

Price and release

The Moto G8 Plus will be available in the UK at Amazon, John Lewis, Carphone Warehouse, EE & Argos from 28th October starting at £239; it will also be available in mainland Europe. We’re still awaiting US pricing and availability and will update this piece when it becomes available. 

Key specs and features

Available in two new colours, red and blue, the G8 Plus looks demure but striking. The buffed frame melds into the curved back and flat display seamlessly, and it feels solid yet comfortable in-hand. Around the back is what looks like a quad-camera setup, but there are actually ‘just’ three cameras, with the lowest ring housing the PDAF and laser autofocus modules. 

Just like the G7 Plus, it charges via a USB-C port at its base, there are power buttons and a volume rocker to the right and there’s a big, bright display, clocking in at 6.3-inches with Full HD+ resolution. 

The G8 Plus also features a huge 4000mAh battery - excellent for a midrange phone, as well as an 18W Turbo Charger. That’s means zippier charging than an iPhone 11 Pro, despite the fact it clocks in at almost a quarter of the price.

Powered along by a Snapdragon 665 processor, while this isn’t going to break any benchmark records, combined with 4GB RAM, it’s a solid offering given how much it costs, and with 64GB storage, which can be supplemented by up to 512GB with a microSD card, this low-cost phone has just outperformed the Pixel 4 from a possible capacity point of view - Google, please, take note. 

Camera

The camera on the G8 Plus is kind of like a Moto One Action, Moto One Vision love child. It features the same 48MP Quad Pixel camera system found on the Vision, and indeed the Moto One Zoom launched at IFA 2019 with the Action’s ultra-wide video camera. 

Quad Pixel tech - a fancy way of saying pixel binning - combines four pixels into one, giving the Moto G8 Plus an equivalent pixel size of 1.6μ, and turning 48MP images into 12MP shots with better dynamic range and improved noise handling.

The G8 Plus also features the ultra-wide video camera found on the Moto One Action, with its 117-degree field of view delivering the same focal length as the human eye.

It also brings back Night Vision, Portrait Mode, Colour Pop and more, records video at up to 4K, 30fps and on the front, nuzzled inside a water droplet notch is a 25MP selfie camera with an f/2 lens.

Initial verdict

After about 30 minutes with Motorola’s latest G-series midrange flagship, we’re impressed by the design and price. Its specs impress, especially that battery capacity and camera setup, and thanks to Motorola’s stock take on Android, we can almost be guaranteed performance will be at least good. 

That said, just how good its camera is, remains to be seen. We’ve experienced wildly varying results from Sony’s 48MP sensor to date, so watch this space as we’ll be sharing our full review of the Moto G8 Plus in the coming weeks.
