So I took the plunge and bought a refurbished iPad from Amazon – because $80 was much more appropriate for my needs!

It turns out I worried for nothing. It came in the usual Amazon packaging, carefully wrapped, perfectly clean and in great condition. Being completely factory reset, I obviously had the "new car smell" experience of the Apple welcome and setting everything up from scratch.

The only downside is that, unlike when you're buying from companies like MPB.com, you don't see photos of the actual item you're buying. However, Amazon has a grading system to give you a decent idea of the condition of your product – and Amazon returns are easy, so you can always send it right back if you're not happy.

So, if you're in a similar boat and you want a cheap iPad for basic functions – or maybe you want a burner iPad for travelling or for the kids to use – I only have good things to say about getting one from Amazon Renewed.

The AirPad Air series has long been the more affordable alternative to the Pro line that doesn’t quite throttle the features like the budget iPad model, but with the iPad Air M3, creatives are gaining a few key features including faster speed and graphics along with native support for ProRes video editing. Unveiled on March 4, the new Apple iPad Air M3 brings the mid-tier tablet a newer processor without touching the list price.

The iPad Air M3 isn’t a radical update but rather an incremental one, with the same design as the earlier version but a speed boost created by moving from the M2 to the M3 Apple-made processor. What is a surprise, however, is when Apple made the announcement. When Tim Cook teased “something in the Air” earlier this week, many analysts expected the MacBook Air. Instead, it’s the tablet that got a March refresh.

While the iPad Air M3 is more of an incremental update than a radically new tablet, the March 2025 launch brings a few key features for creatives. The biggest change over the older model is the move to that M3 processor right in the name, which Apple says is almost twice as fast as the M1 model.

The update also brings around 40 percent faster graphics, Apple says, compared to the M1. In a first for the Air series, the M3 variant also uses Apple’s more advanced graphics architecture that includes dynamic caching, hardware-accelerated mesh shading and ray tracing, which the company says translates into more accurate lighting and shadows on screen.

But the new iPad Air M3 also lists a ProRes engine in the specifications. While earlier models could support ProRes editing in third-party apps, the inclusion of a native ProRes engine should boost speed when working with the video files. The iPad Pro series has traditionally been the better choice for video editing in part due to that ProRes engine and, while the Pro series still carries an edge with the M4 chip, the Air M3 narrows the gap between the two with that integrated ProRes support in the media engine.

Oddly enough, while the M3 includes ProRes in the media engine, the camera specifications don’t carry support for shooting ProRes video, although iPads aren’t as well known for taking photos and videos as Apple’s smartphones. The camera specs for the iPad Air M3 line-up with the older M2 version with a 12MP wide-angle camera with an f/1.8 aperture and 4K at up to 60 fps. Compared to the Pro model, the Air series still lacks a portrait mode and ProRes recording, while the camera also doesn’t have a flash.

The M3 chip and iPadOS 18 brings an AI-based Clean Up tool to remove distractions in the native Photos app. Support for Apple Intelligence also includes Image Playground, Genmoji, and AI-powered Siri. Like the latest iPhones, the iPad Air M3 uses on-device processing for many AI requests while Private Cloud Compute doesn’t store user data for larger off-device processing.

The iPad Air M3’s battery life remains unchanged at up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi or up to nine hours on a cellular network, but Apple notes that, for the first time, the battery contains 95% recycled lithium.

The refreshed iPad Air also comes with a new Magic Keyboard, which includes a larger trackpad, a row of function keys, and a lower price point. The new keyboard lists for $269 / £269 / AU$449 for the 11-inch version and $319 / £299 / AU$499 for the 13-inch.

The iPad Air M3 announcement also comes with the release of a new budget tablet, the iPad A16, which is about 30 percent faster than the earlier budget iPad with the A13 Bionic chip. The new budget model lacks Apple Intelligence.

The iPad Air M3 will be available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes, with 128GB, 256GB, 512GB, or 1TB storage options and a choice of blue, purple, starlight or space gray. Pre-orders for the new iPad Air M3 are already open in 29 countries, with shipping and availability in physical Apple Stores expected to begin on March 12. The base 11-inch model starts at $599 / £599 / AU$999 for the Wi-Fi model and $749 / £749 / AU$1,249 with cellular. The 13-inch option starts at $799 / £799 / AU$1,349, and $949 / £979 / AU$1,599 with a cellular network.

The base model iPad is also available for pre-order with an expected March 12 ship date and starts at $349 / £329 / AU$599.

I love Apple products. They're sleek, they're powerful, and in the immortal words of Steve Jobs, they "just work" (well, most of the time). But their naming strategy? It's a wild ride.

Take the iPhone lineup, for instance. Remember when it was just "iPhone" followed by a number? Those were simpler times. Now along with the iPhone 16 we recently got the iPhone 16 Pro Max, the iPhone 16 Pro and the iPhone 16 Plus. Plus right now, we're expecting the imminent appearance of the iPhone SE 4; like that cousin no-one's quite sure how to introduce at family gatherings.

And let's talk about those chips. The M1 made sense as a starting point. Then came M1 Pro and M1 Max – okay, still following. But then Apple threw in the M1 Ultra, which is essentially two M1 Max chips fused together. Just when you thought you had it figured out, they launched the M2 series, and now we're deep into M3 and M4 territory, each with their own variants. It's like a Russian nesting doll of processing power.

The iPad family tree is another puzzle altogether. We've got the iPad Pro (in two sizes), iPad Air, iPad mini, and just... iPad. But wait – this basic / standard / entry-level iPad comes in different generations, and some older models are still sold new. Try explaining to your non-tech-savvy aunt why the 9th-generation iPad Air might actually be a better choice for her than the 10th-generation iPad Pro, depending on her needs and budget. To be honest, even your tech-savvy teenager might get lost at this point.

I could go on, but you get the point. Basically it's all a hot mess. So I set myself the challenge of trying to create a decoder for Apple's product naming system. Here's what I came up with.

This decoder, I should stress, is by no means perfect or foolproof. And it's certainly not something that's been approved by Apple. Because while the broad principles I've outlined in this table will get you some of the way, the company themselves doesn't apply them universally across the board. 

For instance, sometimes "Pro" means it's the most powerful option (like with iPhones), but sometimes there's an even more powerful "Max" or "Pro Max" version. Sometimes "Air" means it's the slimmer, lighter option (MacBook Air), but the iPad Air actually sits in a middle ground between basic and Pro models. 

It gets even worse when it comes to Apple's accessories. For instance, AirPods come in regular, Pro and Max varieties – but the Max is actually over-ear headphones, not pods at all. The Apple Pencil, meanwhile, has four versions that look different and charge differently, and they're not compatible with all iPads.

The naming convention here (and I'm not making this up) begins: Apple Pencil (1st Generation), Apple Pencil (2nd Generation)... so far so good. But then suddenly it veers off into Apple Pencil (USB-C) and Apple Pencil Pro. Would you know that the third of these was the budget model, just from the name? Of course not. And you need a spreadsheet to figure out which Apple Pencil works with which iPad: the names here are no use at all.

Passion for simplicity?

Personally, I often find myself having to create mental maps and charts just to keep track of which device is which, and more importantly, to explain these differences to readers in a way that makes sense. It's like being a translator for a language that keeps changing its grammar rules every few months. Life shouldn't be this difficult!

The irony isn't lost on me that Apple, a company famous for its clean, intuitive interface design, has created a product naming system that requires a decoder to understand. Steve Jobs was known for his passion for simplicity, famously paring down Apple's product line to a simple quadrant when he returned to the company. I wonder what he would make of it all today.

Yes, Apple's product line has grown and diversified over time. But I can't help but think there must be a clearer way to organize and name these products. Apple unveiled its latest iPad Pro and iPad Air models at the company's recent launch event, and both are now open for preorder. Below, I've compiled where you can purchase these new tablets, along with the top preorder offers available for the brand-new iPad Pro M4 and iPad Air M2, along with some amazing trade-in deals.

The newly announced iPad Pro (2024) comes in either 11-inch or 13-inch sizes, offering storage options up to a massive 2TB, with prices starting at $999 / £999 AU$1,699. While this is $200 more than the base price of the previous generation, the new model features the M4 chip, an impressive tandem OLED display, and doubles the standard storage to 256GB.  - so you're getting a lot more for the $200 price hike.

Meanwhile, the new iPad Air 6 is also available in 11-inch and 13-inch models, with storage starting at 128GB. Prices begin at $599 / £599 / AUS$999 or the 11-inch version and $799 / £799 / AUS$1,299 for the 13-inch – matching the pricing of the previous generation. However, this latest iPad Air boasts the M2 chip, providing up to 50% faster performance compared to its previous M1-chipped predecessor.

Both devices are currently open for orders via your favorite retailers and are scheduled to ship on May 15, 2024. Presently, they are available directly from Apple and on Amazon in the US.

After a longer than usual wait, Apple made today a big day for the iPad, with both of the photographer's favourite models getting attention on the same day for the first time ever as the iPad Air series and iPad Pro series got major updates.

Many photographers will be very excited by the arrival of a layered Tandem OLED screen (which Apple is calling Ultra Retina XDR). It has up to 1,000 nits by putting two OLED panels atop each other (with peak brightness of 1,600 nits for HDR content). This offers darker blacks and power saving, which the company has taken advantage of by reducing weight and thickness in batteries. Apple have reduced the iPad to 5.1mm (5.3mm for the 11-inch), making it thinner than the iPod Nano, and given the screen a matt finish.

The new device is the first to be powered by Apple's M4 processor, which hasn't even made it to the Mac line yet. The 3nm chip has an "entirely new display engine," as well as 4 performance and 6 efficiency cores, plus 10 GPU cores. Apple say it'll be "up to" 4x faster than M2, or deliver the same performance as M2 with half the power, and boasts hardware ray-tracing acceleration.

The camera is still 12 megapixel, but gets an 'adaptive truetone flash' – the portrait camera is moving to the landscape edge like the iPad air (and every other laptop ever), and goes with a new magic keyboard that has a function row. It looks a lot like (and feels like, they said) using a MacBook.

These, though, come with a massive sting in the tail in the form of a price increase – the new. iPad Pro starts at 256GB at $999 / AU$1,699 11-inch and $1,299 / AU$2,199 for the 13-inch. They'll be available next week. 

Oh, and there's ANOTHER new Apple Pencil too. Apple Pencil Pro. It has a squeezable side and sensor, a haptic engine, a gyro sensor so you can roll it to select tools, and support for Apple's Find My, as well as charging on the side of the iPad Pro. (The pencil will work with the iPad Air too...)

The more cost-conscious choice in the iPad range has long been the iPad Air, which offered a lesser camera but still a meaty processor. One of the main reasons that creatives like photographers and videomakers had to turn away, however, was that Apple didn't offer a large-screen version. That, however, has changed, with the arrival of the a 12.9-inch version (potentially shooting the Pro in the foot for a lot of wiser consumers!)

The iPad Air is now powered by M2, with 8-core CPU / 10-core GPU, nearly 50% faster than the M1 version according to Apple. The front-facing camera is on the landscape edge, and Wi-Fi 6E and 5G is supported.

Has the event answered the real question, though, which ultimately remains "Will the iPad replace the laptop?" The problem remains that it's not really in Apple's interest to encourage people to buy one device when they could buy two.

So what updates has iPad OS got, if any? Well there are a customizable lock screen, interactive widgets, messages with emoji stickers, Stage Manager for overlapping windows (hmm.... now that sounds like a computer....) and Visual Look Up among new AI features, but it won't be until WWDC – a month or so away – that we find out if there will be anything to really use that trackpad with haptic feedback.

The iPad Air will start at 128GB storage, but stays at $599 / AU$999 base price, or $799 / AU$1,299 for the 13-inch version. There are storage options up to 1TB, too. 

Finally, iPad 10th Gen is being cut in price to a starting price of just $349 in the US only (and the iPad Mini remains untouched by today's news).

The last iPad release was in October 2022, over 540 days ago, in fact. Understandably, there is a degree of pent-up excitement in the run-up to the special keynote Apple event on May 7. 

Enthusiasts can attend the livestreamed event on apple.com or on the Apple TV app at 7am Pacific, 10am Eastern, and 3pm UK. 

Remaining characteristically mysterious about the contents of this announcement, eagle-eyed consumers must once again look for clues in the invitation graphics.

Apple Pencil 

My colleague reported back in early March that Apple was likely to release another Apple Pencil this spring, and many speculators believe that this accessory is almost certainly going to accompany, you guessed it, another iPad. According to various reports this alleged Pencil might include a squeeze action to activate certain functions.

iPad Pro updates 

It would appear that Apple inadvertently let slip some of their iPad updates earlier this month when they released the code of the iPadOS 17.5 beta to developers. Website 9to5Mac seemingly discovered new display firmware for four new iPad Pro models: iPad16,3, iPad16,4, iPad16,5, and iPad16,6.

Based on their analysis these are the identifiers of the potential release of the next generation iPad Pro. The firmware suggests that these iPads will come with OLED screens.

iPad Air 

The update is also rumored to include the launch of the larger 12.9-inch iPad Air after accessory retailers ESR began selling cases on Amazon designed for a larger sized Air.

This larger iPad Air might be a direct rival to the heavier iPad Pro of the same size, increasing ease of use by reducing weight. Some analysts have also suggested that the iPad Air might come with a mini-LED display delivering brightness and visual quality to rival OLED, or at least close to it. This might be of particular interest to photographers looking for the iPad Pro screen sizes for image editing but reluctant to pay the price for other features of less use.

The leaked schematics hint to some sources including the Hindustan Times at a redesigned camera bump for the new iPad Air models. Rumor has it that a vertically-oriented camera could be on its way with new camera features and possibly even a flash, suggesting Apple is committed to improving the device's photographic capabilities.

The iPad Air (2022) is Apple's mid/top-level iPad. It's got better tech credentials than the iPad or the iPad mini, but it doesn't have the power of the iPad Pro. It's priced in the middle of the iPad generations lineup too, starting at $599/£699 for the 64GB version with WiFi. 

Apple is known for its well-built, well-designed tablets, and the newest iPad Air, released in March 2022, is no exception. Apple fans will delight in the gorgeous Liquid Retina screen, the fun colorways, the simple yet elegant design, and of course, the super-speedy M1 chip. Compared to the iPad Air (2020) with its A14 chip, this is one nifty tablet, and I found it more than capable of handling my daily tasks, without so much as a stutter.

The iPad Air is almost a year old now, which is getting on a bit in Apple terms, but I still think it's a really decent option for many creative professionals. Paired with one of the best iPad keyboards and an Apple Pencil, it'll be the right iPad for many people. 

To test this iPad, I used it as my main tablet for around a month. I took photos, and videos, and tried out photo and video editing, and I also used it for streaming, sketching, and browsing the internet. 

iPad Air: Specifications

The 2022 iPad Air is not a big departure from the previous version, in terms of design. It's got the same fairly thin bezels around its 10.9-inch Liquid Retina screen (2,360 x 1,640 px). There's no Home button, so you have to swipe up to get to the home screen and the Touch ID button (there's no Face ID on this model) is housed at the top of the tablet. 

Overall, the screen is big enough for most daily tasks and is comfortable for browsing the internet and viewing movies and series on the go – though you'll likely want one of the best iPad stands to hold the tablet in place. It has 500 nits brightness, which is decent for viewing and editing photos, and it does display some beautiful deep blacks and overall shows pretty impressive colors – though more serious professionals may prefer the 600 nits of the pricier iPad Pro 11-inch (2022) or the 1,000 nits of the iPad Pro 12.9-inch (2022).

My only gripe with the design is that when holding the tablet, it's not always obvious where the top of it is, so I found myself searching the sides for the Touch ID/volume buttons on more than one occasion. This problem is solved if you have the iPad Air in a case, such as the Magic Keyboard. 

It's also easier to know where the top of the tablet is if you have an Apple Pencil attached to it. This version of the iPad is compatible with the Apple Pencil 2, and the newer Apple Pencil USB-C, both of which magnetically attach to the top of the iPad (note that the Apple Pencil 2 charges there, while the Apple Pencil USB-C needs to be charged separately).

iPad Air: Performance

I have the now super-seeded version of the 11-inch iPad Pro (2021, M1), and I found the iPad Air (2022) to be comparable to this tablet in terms of performance. This isn't hugely surprising as they both have the M1 chip. 

Both are capable of handling a number of apps open at the same time, and you can stream, create images with several Layers in Procreate, edit some images in Affinity Photo, and browse the internet all at once without the iPad getting at all hot or bothered. It's also good for gaming, and you can even create 3D models in it. 

This is all well and good, but it's worth considering what you'll be using the iPad for. Will you actually be making the most of it, or would you be better off with a cheaper, lower-spec tablet that you can use for photo editing on the fly, and not much else?

It's also worth noting that you are limited by the capabilities of the iPadOS. Sure, you can split screen and technically you can multi-task, but will you really want to on a screen of this size? While testing this iPad, I found that for some tasks, like filling in spreadsheets or doing a lot of copying and pasting, it was easier to open up my laptop and do the task there instead. So that's worth bearing in mind. Whatever Apple claims, this iPad isn't about to replace your main machine or is unlikely to.

Battery life is not bad. Apple says it should last nine or ten hours (nine if you're using Cellular data and 10 otherwise) and I found it lasted around seven hours when looping a video (using WiFi). Charging was fairly speedy, though not amazing, with the tablet going from 0 to 100 in just under three hours. 

iPad Air: Camera

I can't imagine many serious photographers are using their iPad to take photos, but it's good to know that if it comes to it, then this tablet's camera works fine. The rear camera is 12MP wide with a f/1.8 aperture, and a 5x digital zoom. It'll capture HEIF and JPEG, but not RAW. I found it works mostly well and can cope with low lighting, although the image becomes a little grainy when you really zoom in.

The newer iPad Pro, in comparison, has two cameras and a Lidar sensor, so that's the tablet to buy if you want 3D scanning and are really serious about using your iPad for photography.

The front-facing camera is 12MP ultra-wide, with an f/2.4 aperture and a 122-degree field of view. This means it works with Apple's Center Stage feature, where the camera follows you around the room when you're on a video call. Whether or not you'll want to use this feature is up to you, but it can be useful if you want to multi-task and move around a room when on a call, and want to stay in shot.

It's worth noting that Apple has placed the front-facing camera on the top of the iPad, when in portrait mode. The problem is that many people use the iPad in landscape mode when they want to make video calls, meaning that it looks as if they are not looking at the person they're talking to. You may or may not find this annoying, and Center Stage is no doubt supposed to fix this. Note that this issue has been rectified in the new iPad (10th gen), which has the camera along the side of the iPad.

iPad Air: Verdict

Overall, the 5th generation iPad Air is a very capable tablet, which is suitable for a range of uses, whether that's browsing the internet, drawing, or taking or editing photos on the go. It works especially well with the Apple Pencil, although that will cost you extra ($79 or $129 depending on which version you buy).

The iPad Air is slightly let down by its storage options, there's only 64GB or 256GB available with this model, so if you know you want to download a lot of apps then you may find something like the iPad Pro, with its wider range of storage options, is more suitable.

The iPad Air is fast, it looks good and it's comfortable to hold. The camera is decent enough for snapping on the go and the colors are accurate enough to make it ideal for photo or video editing, although the iPad Pro 12.9-inch offers a superior mini-LED LCD panel. Some may also prefer the bigger screen of a laptop or bigger tablet for these tasks, or perhaps even a 2-in-1 machine.

Overall, whether the iPad Air is right for you depends on what you're going to use it for, and whether you'll be making the most of that snappy M1 chip. If you can afford it and you want more storage and a better camera you may want to future-proof your purchase and go for the iPad Pro (2022), you'll want the 12.9-inch version to get the top specs. If you want the same camera as the Air but don't mind so much about the chip, then the standard iPad (10th gen) may be all you need. If you want an all-rounder, then something like the Robo & Kala 2-in-1 may be more suitable.

iPad Air Alternatives

Whether you are looking for the best tablet for photo editing or the best drawing tablet, the journey usually starts with the question, Android or iPadOS? In the early days, there used to be more of a straightforward answer, with Apple’s tablets wiping the board against their Android rivals save for a Samsung flagship like the Galaxy S8 Tab S8 Ultra. This explains why the Cupertino giant’s iPad range makes up 51.21% of all tablets sold, despite its options erring on the expensive side. 

Google has done considerable work to its AndroidOS to not only make it more visually appealing than ever before with Android 13's 'Material You' theming, but it has also invested in making the operating system that works for phones better to use on tablets. Now, there are now far more compelling options for the best Android tablet.

The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro uses a very close version of the OS to the fabled ‘stock Android’ experience, with minimal changes to the user interface or additional apps pre-loaded onto the tablet, instead focusing their attention on making high-end hardware, including a high-quality screen, metal premium chassis and keyboard and stylus accessories.

The P12, as the designation 'Pro' in its title might suggest, is a high-end tablet, with a price tag to match. The P12 is similar in price to Apple’s latest iPad Air model, however unlike Apple's device, it can be bought with a detachable keyboard and stylus pen included, making it immediately more useful as a productivity device out of the box.

Tab P12 Pro Key Features

The Lenovo Tab P12 Pro is centered around its 12.6-inch (2560x1600) OLED screen, with built-in Dolby Vision, which should produce deeper contrast, brighter highlights, and a wide color palette. The tablet also has eye comfort certification, from TUV Rheinland, ensuring long sessions watching movies will put less strain on your eyes.

To complement the Dolby Vision screen, the P12 Pro has 4 internal speakers tuned by JBL that also support Dolby Atmos, which should provide a superior sound experience for watching movies and TV shows.

The tablet comes equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 870 processor, combined with 8GB of RAM, which is powerful enough to breeze through web browsing, streaming video, or using some graphically intensive games or productivity apps from the Google Play Store.

The tablet has a claimed battery of 15 hours for watching videos already saved to the device (not streaming) or 8 hours of web browsing. The tablet also comes with a fingerprint reader built into the power button and has face unlock, although this is the ‘unsophisticated’ version that uses software recognition only, not hardware like Apple’s FaceID.

Tab P12 Pro Build & Handling

The frame is built from an aluminum alloy measuring just 5.8mm at its thinnest point, which provides a very lightweight but still strong and sturdy-feeling tablet. The screen itself has very narrow bezels measuring just 6.9mm narrow bezels around the display. The P12 feels much more premium than its price tag, the metal chassis is really nice to touch and the screen just always looks great. Lenovo has done an excellent job on the build quality here.

The screen is the star of the show. It is very bright with excellent contrast and saturation, it is a really nice screen to use to watch movies or browse through photos. The speakers are equally great quality for a tablet, providing loud deep sound for a very svelt tablet. Whilst there are better-sounding tablets out there, but you will not be disappointed when watching movies made for Dolby Atmos audio tuning.

However, the 16:10 screen is a huge problem for me, a problem shared with other top Android tablets. This screen size suits a lot of Hollywood movies perfectly, but it is not ideal for a lot of TV shows, and when it comes to some games and productivity apps it is just not the ideal ratio.

In portrait, this ratio works okay, it is possible to hold comfortably in one hand, although apps feel too long. In landscape mode, though this tablet is not easy to hold, as it is too long to hold on one side for extended periods of time. Microsoft’s Surface and Apple’s iPad devices are just a much more usable screen ratio for handheld and productivity purposes. 

The tablet comes with a detachable keyboard and stylus. Both these are solid quality, with a smooth plastic material used. The keyboard attaches and detaches using magnets and two small notches to guide alignment, and is a very simple and fast system to use, it is very responsive with nice key travel. The pen attaches to the rear of the tablet using a built-in magnet, which also doubles as a wireless charging point. This magnetic connection is very strong, and I didn’t find the pen falling off easily.

Tab P12 Pro Performance

The tablet is very fast, flying through the operating system with ease, with it's top-tier processor performing very well. During photo editing using Lightroom CC from the Play Store, the tablet handled applying and processing gradients and spot removal well with very little lag, and exporting a cropped video using Google Photos was also fast enough to not be bothersome. Gaming was fast and responsive, with almost no stuttering or dropped frames.

Battery life is also excellent, I wasn’t quite getting the longevity claimed by Lenovo (manufacturer estimates are always quite generous), but I was getting respectably close, and never felt myself worrying about the battery running out prematurely.

There are still a few inconsistencies in the Android OS with spacing and font size between different apps that make the experience a little jarring, the icons and font size for portrait and landscape are wildly different for example. However, Google has made enormous strides in getting Android for tablets to now be a very enjoyable user experience, the interface is colorful and engaging as well as being highly intuitive to use. If you love using an Android phone then you will feel right at home using the Lenovo P12.

Sadly the pen experience is very underwhelming, while the stylus itself is very accurate, and the handwriting recognition is pretty perfect, the palm rejection is nearly non-existent. When taking notes using the stylus, my palm/wrist would continually hit other things on the screen causing all sorts of chaos. This is just something I have never experienced with an iPad or Surface device.

The cameras are also a dreadful experience. The rear cameras are very poor, considering the main camera has a 13MP sensor, the images look like oversharpened oil paintings. The front camera is not much better, with poor sharpness and a washed-out look, it is just about acceptable for video calls.

Lenovo Tab P12 Pro Verdict

If you are firmly in the Android ecosystem, and you want an affordable tablet that feels more premium than its price tag then the Lenovo P12 Pro is definitely a tablet to consider. With an excellent metal chassis, and a high-quality colorful screen that makes watching movies and looking through photos a joy. The P12 is also fast, flying through tasks such as browsing the web, streaming video, and some light photo and video editing. The included stylus and keyboard also make the tablet more of a hybrid productivity device.

Google has made huge strides forward with Android, and it is now an excellent experience, it still has a few kinks to iron out, but is edging closer in user experience to Apple’s tablet OS. For the P12 Pro, unfortunately, the stylus experience is not fantastic, with poor palm rejection, it makes using the stylus without any unwanted side effects very difficult. And a raft of poor cameras as well also let down what is otherwise an excellent hardware design.

 iPhone SE 3: Everything we know about Apple's budget 5G phone

The mobile industry is poised for the arrival of a third-generation iPhone SE with 5G support, with reports now suggesting it could arrive as soon as March 8 at Apple's online launch. P Morgan analysts, according to Reuters, have said the new phone “has the potential to attract more than a billion non-premium Android users.” 

We are more likely to believe the imminent launch rumors now French site Consomac, via TechRadar, has spotted that a iPhone believed to be the iPhone SE 3 has been certified by the Eurasian Economic Commission – a Russian regulator. With invites now being sent out for the virtual press conference from Cupertino, we'd hope that the third-generation iPhone SE will be the headline product at the presentation.

iPhone SE 3 rumored specs

The iPhone SE 3 is said to look much like its predecessor, featuring big bezels and a home button which houses a Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Leaks point to the iPhone SE 3 featuring an A15 Bionic chipset, which makes sense as this is the same as the iPhone 13 range. Some reports tip the upcoming smartphone as having a 4.7-inch LCD screen, just like the last model, while others point towards a larger 5.7-6.1-inch display.

The general school of thought is that the new phone will feature the same 12MP camera as the iPhone SE (2020) – but that it could use a new sensor. We expect a battery similar to the 1,821mAh one in the iPhone SE (2020), too. 

Price will be a crucial factor in the iPhone SE 3 living up to JP Morgan's analysts thoughts that the iPhone SE 3 has the potential to attract “nearly 1.4 billion low-to mid-end Android phone and about 300 million older iPhone model users.”

Indeed, Loop Capital Markets analyst John Donovan (via Investor's Business Daily) has allegedly got hold of information suggesting the new phone could start at just $300 (£290 / €348)! 

iPad Air 5: here's everything we know so far

According to Techrader, We could see a new iPad Air 5 launch, there is a good chance, because leakers raised that the 8 March is a likely launch date, and what do you know here is the Apple Spring Event happening on 8 March! -  It makes sense, as the iPad Air 4 is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

The first three generations of iPad Air have all sported a fairly similar look, but the iPad Air 4 brought a design overhaul to the series, moving it from merely being a larger entry-level iPad into effectively a 'iPad Pro Lite' device. 

The 2020 iPad Air hit the shelves with a modern-looking design, generous processing power and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, but without some of the premium features that make the iPad Pro the top-dog tablet.

So what could the iPad Air 5 bring? Another design update? Improvements to the screen? An extra camera? 

We've heard that all of these and more might be in the works, and you can read full details of all the leaks and rumors below. We've also put forth a wish list of what we'd like Apple's next generation of tablet to look like.

This includes fixes to some of the iPad Air 4's niggles, some new features missing from the current edition, and plenty more.

Apple doesn't generally keep to a yearly release schedule for its iPad Air line, but one is likely due soon, as the iPad Air 4 had its first birthday in October 2021.

Price-wise, the iPad Air 4 costs $599/£579/AU$899 for a model with 64GB of storage, with prices going up for more storage or cellular connection. We could see prices for the iPad Air 5 in the same ballpark.

What we want to see on the iPad Air 5

1. Generous storage options

The iPad Air 4 is currently available with two storage options: 64GB, which is unlikely to be enough for most users; and 256GB, which quite expensive. 

Most tablets come with 128GB, because it caters well to the majority, and would work well with iCloud (or your cloud storage tool of choice) for those who require extra storage still.

We'd like to see the iPad Air 5 arrive with 128GB of storage, with Apple dropping the 64GB option entirely. The latter may be a suitable provision for entry-level iPads, but is unlikely to ever be sufficient for the types of power-users who would be investing in the iPad Air for photo and video editing on the go.

2. Improved selfie camera

The iPad Air 4's selfie camera  was a mere 7-megapixel unit, it wasn't great for video calling, taking selfies, or recording video of yourself, we would love to see Apple bumping up those numbers to at a 10- or 12-megapixel unit, which would make the selfie camera more useful. 

Better still would be the inclusion of iPhone selfie technology!

 3. Even more color choices

We were pleased to see Apple offer the iPad Air 4 in a range of color options. In particular, we liked the addition of the pastel shades.

We'd like to see more of the same with the iPad Air 5, with perhaps some new color options too. The iPhone XR  iPhone 12and iPhone 13 are available in some great, vibrant colors, so let's see them used more!

 4. Longer-lasting battery

The iPad Air 4's battery lasted around 10 hours of use, which was similar to that offered by the majority of iPads; 9-12 hours is the quoted figure for general use. If you're using your iPad to work in coffee shops from time-to-time, this is totally acceptable.

However, if you're a creative using your iPad  to edit 4K video or a series of photos you want to edit on a long-haul flight then you may struggle with that amount.

We'd like to see the iPad Air 5 boost battery life, or at least include software optimizations that keep the device ticking over for longer so your not looking for that charging cable in your hand luggage.

5. Better iPad widget handling

This is more a problem with iPadOS 14 and Apple's software, than iPad hardware, but it's a change we'd welcome.

One of the key features of iOS 14 is the ability to create widgets based on your apps, and leave them on the home screen for easy use. In iPadOS, you can only add these widgets to a carousel on the 'main' home page, making them difficult to find if you have lots of apps, and therefore much less useful.

We'd like to see iPadOS 14 improved or this brought into iPadOS 15 so you can add widgets to your home menu wherever you like, not just in the same position.

6. Thinner bezels

The iPad Air 4 and iPad Pro designs don't sport the huge bezels of the entry-level iPad and iPad Mini, but there remains a pretty chunky border separating the screen from the edge of the tablet.

A thinner bezel around the iPad Air 5 would offer an improvement to the design, making the tablet's body size more closely match its screen size. This isn't a deal-breaking demand, which is the reason it sits last on this, but thinner bezels always look better – and this is a wish-list, after all.

New Macs

Three new Mac model numbers have been registered in the Eurasian Economic Database ahead this 'Spring' event, adding additional weight to existing rumors that the next generation of Apple silicon will be launched at the Apple Event.

The filing was spotted by Consomac, which notes that the registration doesn't give us much information about the products, though a few speculations can be made. The numbers being registered are A2615, A2686 and A2681 respectively, with the latter being described as a laptop. 

We don't have any official confirmation that these new devices will be powered by the anticipated M2 chipset, but all of the M1-powered devices which have been registered with numbers starting with A24. 

As these new Macs break the trend, it's likely we will at least see some new variation of the existing M1 even if the M2 silicon isn't introduced.

As with all rumors, don't take any of this as gospel until an official statement is made or we actually see the products paraded around in the livestream launch. Apple does occasionally register its product many months ahead of their planned release.

Evidence of M2 Apple Silicon Chip Spotted Ahead of Apple Event

According to Macrumors, evidence that Apple is testing the M2 Apple silicon chip, expected to debut first in a new MacBook Air and refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro, has been spotted by a developer ahead of the "Peek performance" Apple event.

As reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, a "developer source" has informed him that in recent weeks, Apple has been testing a chip with an eight-core CPU and a 10-core GPU across multiple Macs on the latest macOS beta.

I'm told from a developer source that Apple has been testing multiple Macs with a new chip in recent weeks that includes an eight-core CPU (four efficiency cores and four high-performance cores) and 10 GPU cores. Those are exactly the specifications of the M2 chip I detailed last year.

Apple has been testing this new chip on machines running macOS 12.3 (which should be released in the next week or two and run on the new Macs) and a future macOS 12.4, as well as macOS 13, which will be previewed in June at WWDC 2022.

A similar story played out ahead of Apple's Mac-focused event in October, in which the M1 Pro and M1 Max chip names were spotted in app logs.

Apple's ‌M2‌ Apple silicon chip will be the first significant upgrade for Apple's custom silicon on the Mac since Apple unveiled its M1 architecture in November 2020. Apple has since introduced more powerful iterations of the ‌M1‌ chip, including the M1 Pro and M1 Max.

The ‌M2‌ chip is thought to make its way first to an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro and a completely redesigned ‌MacBook Air‌. Gurman said today that a new Mac mini, expected to feature ‌M1 Pro‌ and ‌M1 Max‌ chips, is "ready to go" and could launch next week. A new 13-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac could launch "as soon as the first half of the year," Gurman added.

Gurman reiterated his expectations for Apple's "Peek performance" event on Tuesday. As widely reported by previous rumors and leaks, a new iPhone SE with the same 4.7-inch design as the previous model is expected to be announced, but with the addition of 5G connectivity and a new chip.

A new iPad Air is also rumored to make its debut at the event, featuring the A15 chip, Center Stage, and 5G connectivity. Alongside the new iPhone, iPad, and at least one new Apple silicon Mac, Gurman said that a fourth "wildcard" announcement is possible.

iOS 15.4

As well as new hardware we could also see new software, in the form of iOS 15.4. This is already in beta, with the finished release expected to land any time now, so this Apple event would be an ideal launch venue. That said, while the timing lines up, no leaks have specifically said it will land there, so its a wait and see scenario. 

Whenever iOS 15.4 does land, you can look forward to full support for Face ID while wearing a mask, the launch of Apple’s Universal Control feature, a whole bunch of new emoji, anti-stalking measures for AirTag, and a variety of other features and improvements.

Apple Glasses

Okay, saying we expect to see these is really pushing it! – we’re actually not at all sure whether we will or not, and until very recently we’d have been surprised to see them.

But in a teaser for the event, Greg Joswiak (Apple’s SVP of marketing) posted a short video that appears to show an augmented reality Apple logo – one which could perhaps be seen from the perspective of someone wearing Apple’s long-rumored AR glasses.

It's a stretch, but it’s not outside the realms of possibility tomorrow 8 March could be our first official look at Apple Glasses.

Faster Mini Mac 

In 2020, Apple unveiled its Mac Mini with the M1 chip. But now that the tech giant has taken the wraps off its M1 Pro and M1 Max processors, when will we see a faster Mac Mini? there are speculations that a new, more powerful Mac Mini model could be coming in the near future. Versions with Apple's M1 Pro and rumored M2 chips are rumored to either at the Apple event tomorrow, or later in May or June.... let hope its tomorrow!

Apple may also be working on a more affordable version of its Pro Display XDR, which was originally released in 2019 for just under $5,000 (not including the $1,000 stand). Bloomberg reported in January that a cheaper Apple monitor was in "early development." 

MacBook Pro M2

It's looking very likely that Apple will launch the M2 chip at this event – the successor to the chip powering the MacBook Air (M1, 2020) and MacBook Pro 13-inch (M1, 2020). It doesn't sound like a replacement for the MacBook Air will arrive at this event, but a MacBook Pro with M2 chip looks very likely. 

The M2 will apparently feature 8 cores of processing power, just like its predecessor, but will include 10 graphics cores, providing a performance boost of around 25%. We're sure there will be other tweaks as well.

We hope you are all as excited as we are for the Apple Event, the first big event from Apple in 2022, and it's sure to be a good one with lots of rumors already flying round about what Apple might showcase at this event, such as a new iPhone SE or even iPad Air 5.

But what I have just heard about now might make you even more excited..

Mac Studio 

Renders alleged to be the "Mac Studio," described as a hybrid between a Mac Pro and Mac mini, have surfaced online before Apple it to hold its "Peek Performance" event today, where at least one new Mac is expected to be announced.

The renders were shared by YouTuber Luke Miani, and shows a design similar to the ‌Mac mini‌, with a very similar footprint, but approximately four-inches taller when compared to the ‌Mac mini‌ at 1.4 inches.

The Mac Studio, according to the renders, will feature an LED light on the front and a thermal design on the bottom for heat. The renders do not include details on the types of ports on the Mac Studio, although Miani says in an accompanying post on AppleTrack it will feature a "wide array of IO" with more USB-C ports than the current M1 ‌Mac mini‌, which only includes two ports.

Other specifications, including what chips the machine will run, are also not included in the newly leaked information, but Miani says Apple will "unequivocally" announce the Mac Studio during its event tomorrow.

With all rumors they need taking with a pinch of salt, but having a Mac Mini that could rival it's already amazing design, function and add more power, and port-ability, see what I did there!

According to a last minute confirmation from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In a tweet, Gurman says that the Mac Studio and a "new monitor running iOS are "ready to go" and will likely be debuting tomorrow.

Yesterday, renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said on Macrumors he expects Apple to release a consumer-level display in a 27-inch size without mini-LED this year, and if this rumor turns out to be true, it could lunch today! This rumor sheds no light on the potential price of the display, but a price tag around $1,000 seems reasonable given its rumored specifications.

Apple's event will kick off at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time or 6pm today (8 March). In addition to being streamed on YouTube, the event can also be watched through the events webpage and in the Apple TV app.

So here's another rumor going out regarding the iPhone 13could be coming in a new colorway, green according to website AppleTrack.

"...think somewhere between the Mint iPhone 12 and Midnight Green iPhone 11 Pro", according to 'sources familiar with the matter'.

The leaker also suggested a lighter-purple version of the iPad Air 5 that's expected to debut today - if that comes in place of a purple MacBook, Techradar's writer John Loeffler is going to be pretty unhappy.

These color leaks are not confirmed at all, but it's an interesting concept - somewhere between 'mint and midnight' green could look quite classy... from the the above render we think it looks rather sophisticated, what do you think? 

 iPhone SE 3: Everything we know about Apple's budget 5G phone

The mobile industry is poised for the arrival of a third-generation iPhone SE with 5G support, with reports now suggesting it could arrive at Apple's online launch today. P J Morgan analysts, according to Reuters, have said the new phone “has the potential to attract more than a billion non-premium Android users.” 

We are more likely to believe the imminent launch rumors now French site Consomac, via TechRadar, has spotted that a iPhone believed to be the iPhone SE 3 has been certified by the Eurasian Economic Commission – a Russian regulator. With invites now being sent out for the virtual press conference from Cupertino, we'd hope that the third-generation iPhone SE will be the headline product at the presentation.

iPhone SE 3 rumored specs

The iPhone SE 3 is said to look much like its predecessor, featuring big bezels and a home button which houses a Touch ID fingerprint scanner.

Leaks point to the iPhone SE 3 featuring an A15 Bionic chipset, which makes sense as this is the same as the iPhone 13 range. Some reports tip the upcoming smartphone as having a 4.7-inch LCD screen, just like the last model, while others point towards a larger 5.7-6.1-inch display.

The general school of thought is that the new phone will feature the same 12MP camera as the iPhone SE (2020) – but that it could use a new sensor. We expect a battery similar to the 1,821mAh one in the iPhone SE (2020), too. 

Price will be a crucial factor in the iPhone SE 3 living up to JP Morgan's analysts thoughts that the iPhone SE 3 has the potential to attract “nearly 1.4 billion low-to mid-end Android phone and about 300 million older iPhone model users.”

Indeed, Loop Capital Markets analyst John Donovan (via Investor's Business Daily) has allegedly got hold of information suggesting the new phone could start at just $300 (£290 / €348)! 

iPad Air 5: here's everything we know so far

According to Techrader, We could see a new iPad Air 5 launch, there is a good chance, because leakers raised that the 8 March is a likely launch date, and what do you know here is the Apple Spring Event happening on 8 March! -  It makes sense, as the iPad Air 4 is getting a bit long in the tooth now.

The first three generations of iPad Air have all sported a fairly similar look, but the iPad Air 4 brought a design overhaul to the series, moving it from merely being a larger entry-level iPad into effectively a 'iPad Pro Lite' device. 

The 2020 iPad Air hit the shelves with a modern-looking design, generous processing power and a side-mounted fingerprint scanner, but without some of the premium features that make the iPad Pro the top-dog tablet.

So what could the iPad Air 5 bring? Another design update? Improvements to the screen? An extra camera? 

We've heard that all of these and more might be in the works, and you can read full details of all the leaks and rumors below. We've also put forth a wish list of what we'd like Apple's next generation of tablet to look like.

This includes fixes to some of the iPad Air 4's niggles, some new features missing from the current edition, and plenty more.

Apple doesn't generally keep to a yearly release schedule for its iPad Air line, but one is likely due soon, as the iPad Air 4 had its first birthday in October 2021.

Price-wise, the iPad Air 4 costs $599/£579/AU$899 for a model with 64GB of storage, with prices going up for more storage or cellular connection. We could see prices for the iPad Air 5 in the same ballpark.

What we want to see on the iPad Air 5

1. Generous storage options

The iPad Air 4 is currently available with two storage options: 64GB, which is unlikely to be enough for most users; and 256GB, which quite expensive. 

Most tablets come with 128GB, because it caters well to the majority, and would work well with iCloud (or your cloud storage tool of choice) for those who require extra storage still.

We'd like to see the iPad Air 5 arrive with 128GB of storage, with Apple dropping the 64GB option entirely. The latter may be a suitable provision for entry-level iPads, but is unlikely to ever be sufficient for the types of power-users who would be investing in the iPad Air for photo and video editing on the go.

2. Improved selfie camera

The iPad Air 4's selfie camera  was a mere 7-megapixel unit, it wasn't great for video calling, taking selfies, or recording video of yourself, we would love to see Apple bumping up those numbers to at a 10- or 12-megapixel unit, which would make the selfie camera more useful. 

Better still would be the inclusion of iPhone selfie technology!

3. Even more color choices

We were pleased to see Apple offer the iPad Air 4 in a range of color options. In particular, we liked the addition of the pastel shades.

We'd like to see more of the same with the iPad Air 5, with perhaps some new color options too. The iPhone XR  iPhone 12and iPhone 13 are available in some great, vibrant colors, so let's see them used more!

4. Longer-lasting battery

The iPad Air 4's battery lasted around 10 hours of use, which was similar to that offered by the majority of iPads; 9-12 hours is the quoted figure for general use. If you're using your iPad to work in coffee shops from time-to-time, this is totally acceptable.

However, if you're a creative using your iPad  to edit 4K video or a series of photos you want to edit on a long-haul flight then you may struggle with that amount.

We'd like to see the iPad Air 5 boost battery life, or at least include software optimizations that keep the device ticking over for longer so your not looking for that charging cable in your hand luggage.

5. Better iPad widget handling

This is more a problem with iPadOS 14 and Apple's software, than iPad hardware, but it's a change we'd welcome.

One of the key features of iOS 14 is the ability to create widgets based on your apps, and leave them on the home screen for easy use. In iPadOS, you can only add these widgets to a carousel on the 'main' home page, making them difficult to find if you have lots of apps, and therefore much less useful.

We'd like to see iPadOS 14 improved or this brought into iPadOS 15 so you can add widgets to your home menu wherever you like, not just in the same position.

- Don't manic, this just means they are getting it ready for orders of the new and exciting offerings that they are going to reveal at today's event.

As TechRader points out, this move does stop anyone from buying an iPad Air for $799 and then finding out that it's been upgraded in under half a day - that's a helpful thing and also a very good reason to hold off buying any Apple product until the event is over.

This is also a great time for me to get some lunch, have a coffee and sit back and relax... and by relax I mean think about all the new Apple products that might be announced and surf the web to find you guys and girls even more juicy rumors to talk about !

Evidence of M2 Apple Silicon Chip Spotted Ahead of Apple Event

According to Macrumors, evidence that Apple is testing the M2 Apple silicon chip, expected to debut first in a new MacBook Air and refreshed 13-inch MacBook Pro, has been spotted by a developer ahead of the "Peek performance" Apple event.

As reported by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, a "developer source" has informed him that in recent weeks, Apple has been testing a chip with an eight-core CPU and a 10-core GPU across multiple Macs on the latest macOS beta.

I'm told from a developer source that Apple has been testing multiple Macs with a new chip in recent weeks that includes an eight-core CPU (four efficiency cores and four high-performance cores) and 10 GPU cores. Those are exactly the specifications of the M2 chip I detailed last year.

Apple has been testing this new chip on machines running macOS 12.3 (which should be released in the next week or two and run on the new Macs) and a future macOS 12.4, as well as macOS 13, which will be previewed in June at WWDC 2022.

A similar story played out ahead of Apple's Mac-focused event in October, in which the M1 Pro and M1 Max chip names were spotted in app logs.

Apple's ‌M2‌ Apple silicon chip will be the first significant upgrade for Apple's custom silicon on the Mac since Apple unveiled its M1architecture in November 2020. Apple has since introduced more powerful iterations of the ‌M1‌ chip, including the M1 Proand M1 Max.

The ‌M2‌ chip is thought to make its way first to an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro and a completely redesigned ‌MacBook Air‌. Gurman said today that a new Mac mini, expected to feature ‌M1 Pro‌ and ‌M1 Max‌ chips, is "ready to go" and could launch next week. A new 13-inch MacBook Pro and a new iMac could launch "as soon as the first half of the year," Gurman added.

Gurman reiterated his expectations for Apple's "Peek performance" event on Tuesday. As widely reported by previous rumors and leaks, a new iPhone SE with the same 4.7-inch design as the previous model is expected to be announced, but with the addition of 5G connectivity and a new chip.

A new iPad Air is also rumored to make its debut at the event, featuring the A15 chip, Center Stage, and 5G connectivity. Alongside the new iPhone, iPad, and at least one new Apple silicon Mac, Gurman said that a fourth "wildcard" announcement is possible.

iPad Air 5 rumored to have 8GB RAM, 128GB storage

According to a source over at appleinsider a new leak says that the forthcoming iPad Air 5 will retain a $599 price tag, but will have 8GB RAM and start at 128GB storage, and use the M1 processor.

It has previously been reported that the new iPad Air will use the Apple Silicon M1 processor, as found in the iPad Pro. It's also common for Apple to keep the price of a new model the same as the old.

The claims of these specifications, and the $599 starting price, come from Korean leaker Lanzuk, who has a mixed track record regarding leaks, so don't take this as gospel, but has said they expect the iPad Air 5 is expected to be revealed at todays event.

This time, the leaker claims that the information about the new iPad Air comes from an unspecified US developer.

Separately, multiple previous reports have said that the 'iPad Air 5' is likely to feature a 5G option, and Center Stage. "Lanzuk" does not mention either of these.

Web video producer, AKA Youtuber, Margues Brownlee has commented that he misses the "old days" of not knowing what Apple might actually come out with, oh how technology and reporting has changed.... for the better and for worse in some cases maybe?

Either way while leaks might ruin the event for others, it also builds the excitement up too.. Maybe all news in good news?

Marques also points out that hitting the link button of an #AppleEvent tweet will show you the special animation, and questions why don't other brands work with Twitter like this.... Maybe because they don't have as deep pockets as Apple do?

a new leak has laid bare some new 'facts' about the iPhone SE now, please take this info with a pinch of salt that is deserves, this leaker is still somewhat unproven (and it's from a 'Taiwan supply chain source' - but we're hearing a lot of things that corroborate what we've already heard. 

Apparently, a 4.7-inch screen is present, but the A15 chipset, combined with a larger battery, could be a real winner - especially if, as suggested, MagSafe appears. That's a long-lasting iPhone, especially without a huge, high-power screen.

There's also a tip reported by Techradar for a Ceramic Shield on the front of the phone to help with drops - and the price is reportedly staying at $399.

iOS 15.4

As well as new hardware we could also see new software, in the form of iOS 15.4. This is already in beta, with the finished release expected to land any time now, so this Apple event would be an ideal launch venue. That said, while the timing lines up, no leaks have specifically said it will land there, so its a wait and see scenario. 

Whenever iOS 15.4 does land, you can look forward to full support for Face ID while wearing a mask, the launch of Apple’s Universal Control feature, a whole bunch of new emoji, anti-stalking measures for AirTag, and a variety of other features and improvements.

New Macs

Three new Mac model numbers have been registered in the Eurasian Economic Database ahead this 'Spring' event, adding additional weight to existing rumors that the next generation of Apple silicon will be launched at the Apple Event.

The filing was spotted by Consomac, which notes that the registration doesn't give us much information about the products, though a few speculations can be made. The numbers being registered are A2615, A2686 and A2681 respectively, with the latter being described as a laptop. 

We don't have any official confirmation that these new devices will be powered by the anticipated M2 chipset, but all of the M1-powered devices which have been registered with numbers starting with A24. 

As these new Macs break the trend, it's likely we will at least see some new variation of the existing M1 even if the M2 silicon isn't introduced.

Mac Studio

What are you most excited about? - I think it would have to be the rumoured Mac Studio or perhaps the new iPad Air, both would be a fantastic edition to any setup or used solely as video and photo editing, yes the iPad has it on portability, but the Mac Studio will have more ports - don't worry I wasn't going to use the same joke thrice

A few more claimed details about the iPhone SE 5G have appeared (via 9to5Mac). Apparently, it might feature Apple's MagSafe wireless charging system, its Ceramic Shield glass, and better battery life.

The battery life feels like a given: the Apple A15 chip seems to have been one key part of the huge battery life improvements in the iPhone 13 over the iPhone 12, so some improvement here simply from its inclusion seems likely.

I think the inclusion of MagSafe charging also seems like a fair bet – we're not certain of it, but I think MagSafe has got off to a slow start in terms of popularity, and including it on the low-cost model seems like a good way to get more people into it.

The Apple event 2020 is over and we saw some exciting products revealed today, including the Apple Watch 6, the updated iPad Air and the updated iPad 8th generation. 

"But where is the iPhone 12?" we hear you ask. Well, after months of speculation and rumors, it seems that the iPhone 12 will be deviating from its traditional September release date. It's not clear exactly why this is, but it's likely to have something to do with the rumors of production delays that we've been hearing about for quite some time.

We were expecting to see the appearance of Apple AirTags, which have been rumored for quite a while. This would be Apple's answer to Tile, which is already a lifesaver for photographers looking to keep their kit safe. However, a native Apple version of Tile might prove even more popular for those who like to keep their technology in the same system.

Unfortunately, it seems that, once again, Apple has decided to make us wait for the AirTags. However, perhaps we'll see them appear when the iPhone 12 is finally announced?

Apple Watch 6

The announcement of the Apple Watch 6 also brought some new information about the Watch OS 7. Apparently, a new sleep app will use motion sensors to measure how you sleep. It'll even include a motion sensor to measure how long you wash your hands. In addition, VO2 Max values is one of the best ways to measure overall health. The Watch OS 7 can measure a full range of VO2 Max. You'll even get a notification if your VO2 Max drops to lower levels. 

Apple Watch 6 has a few new colors, including a great looking red. New health sensor will measure Blood Oxygen levels from your wrist. The new health sensor shines infrared light, measuring the light that is reflected back. The new app will let you take a measurement in just 15 seconds. It also takes periodic background measurements – even while you sleep. 

The Apple Watch 6 will be 20% faster than the previous generation. It'll also have a screen that's 2 and a half times brighter outdoors when wrist is down, allowing users to see it even in bright sunlight. Keen hikers will also be happy to know that you can see elevation change in real time on watch face. 

The Apple Watch 6 will also have some interesting new watch face designs. Photographers will be interested to see that Lume will have a display that seems to show golden hour.

There will also be some new straps, including the Solo Loop. This features no clasp, no buckle, no overlapping parts and is just one continuous piece made from custom silicone. It's stretchable, durable and swim-proof. It'll be available in range of sizes and 7 different colors.

Apple Watch 6 will also introduce Family Setup. One of the features will include the ability to specify what contacts your kids communicate with. There will also be automatic location notification and School-Time Mode to help kids concentrate. Family Setup will require a cellular model and is designed to give kids more agency and parents more peace of mind. 

The Apple Watch 6 will begin at $399 / AU$599. It's available to pre-order now and you can pick it up on Friday 18 September.

Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE will have the S5 chip from the Apple Watch 5 – it'll also be capable of Family Setup if its a cellular model. It also has the same GPS, altimeter and accessibility sensors. It'll be twice as fast as the Series 3 and will begin at $279 / AU$429.

iPad (2020) 8th generation

The updated iPad 8th generation will include the A12 bionic chip, which delivers a powerful CPU performance – 40% faster CPU in fact! It also delivers a 2x jump in graphics, which is great for photographers working with high res content. Apple boasts that the 8th gen iPad will be 2x faster than top selling Windows laptop, 3x faster than the top-selling Android tablet and 6x faster than the top selling Chromebook.

Interestingly, Neural Engine for machine learning is coming to iPad 8th generation. This is capable of 8 trillion operations per second. The iPad 8th gen will work with full size keyboards and the Apple Pencil. iPadOS 14 will also bring new capabilities to iPad and Apple Pencil, even being able to understand what you're writing. Shape recognition will help you draw perfect circles. Plus, you can even copy handwritten notes and paste them as text in other apps. 

The iPad 8th generation will feature a 10.2" retina display and will start at $329 / AU$499 for general consumers and $299 / AU$469 for education. It's available for pre-order today and can be picked up on Friday 18 September.

iPad Air 

The new iPad Air will feature a completely updated design, featuring an all-screen display. It will come in 5 colors, including Green, Sky Blue and Rose Gold. It'll have a Liquid Retina display that will measure 2360 x 1640, which is 3.8M pixels. The screen will also feature full lamination, True Tone technology and antireflective coating. As previously rumored, the Touch ID will now be on the Power button and there will be no home button anymore. 

The iPad Air will include a brand new A14 Bionic chip that features 5 nanometer technology. There is 11.8 billion transistors in this 5 nanometer chip, which means that there is increased performance in every aspect of the chip. Apparently there will be a 40% faster increase over the previous iPad Air and a 30% increase in the graphics performance. The new iPad Air will have a 2x faster graphics performance than best-selling laptop. 

Interestingly for photographers, Apple's Neural Engine will enable 'ML Super Resolution'. This is a feature that will define edges to effectively increase the resolution of a photo (although it'll be interesting to see how this will work in real life – it also seems that this will be through the third-party app Pixelmator). 

The front-facing camera on the iPad Air will have a 7MP sensor and an f/2.2 aperture. It will feature Smart HDR and will support video capture at 1080p 60fps. Meanwhile, the back of the iPad will have a 12MP camera with an f/1.8 aperture. It'll be capable of recording 4K video at 60 fps – plus there will be 240 fps slow motion video and improved video stabilization as well. 

The iPad Air will start at $599 / AU$899 and will be available beginning from next month.

iOS 14 / iPadOS / Watch OS 7

And finally, iOS 14 will be released 16 September, featuring App Library and App Clips. iPadOS will also be released, with new capabilities for iPad and Apple Pencil. We'll also see the release of Watch OS 7, which will allow users to discover and share watch faces. It will also have automatic hand washing detection, new exercise metrics and more. All of the products announced today will ship with these new OS updates.
