<p>Sometimes a deal seems too good to be true, yet it is, and that's the case with this unbelievable Gitzo carbon fiber tripod that comes with <em>not one</em> but <em>two</em> heads. Gitzo is well known as the most premium of tripod brands, and it's not often that any of its gear can be labeled as a 'bargain'. I've tried plenty of its gear but never owned any, as I've never been able to afford it – until today!</p><div class="product"><a data-dimension112="eb4a5535-7f5f-4b08-8186-42bfc5a2b4a2" data-action="Deal Block" data-label="Get this premium Gitzo bundle for a rock-bottom price! It really is some of the very best camera kit that money can buy, and at this price you can afford to buy it!" data-dimension25="$999.95">View Deal</a></p></div><p>The 'Gitzo B&H Photo Special 50th Anniversary Kit' is a colab between the premium tripod manufacturer and camera retailer B&H, which bundles a top-quality GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 Carbon Fiber Tripod and GH3382QD Ball Head kit, which normally retails for $1,699 on its own, and adds a GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head, which has a regular price of $689.95. So the usual 1999.95 asking price for the Gitzo B&H Photo Special 50th Anniversary Kit seems pretty reasonable compared to the $2388.95 for buying the kit separately. </p><p>But reducing the price further to just $999.95 for this limited-time offer has to be the best deal I've seen <em>anywhere</em> this Black Friday (and I've been scouring the big retailers' deals day in day out, so you don't have to). Honestly, I've priced the same kit up on other dealers' websites (see below), and no one comes <em>anywhere</em> <em>close</em> to this…</p><p>At the core of this bundle is the GT2542 Mountaineer Series 2 tripod. Constructed with advanced Carbon eXact tubing, this four-section tripod can support a substantial 48.5lb load capacity and extends to a maximum height of 65.7 inches. The center column can be removed for ground-level shooting. Leg sections are secured by G-lock Ultra twist locks, which feature an internal O-ring to prevent dust from entering the leg system. </p><p>It normally comes as a kit with the GH3382QD Ball Head, which is very good in its own right, but this bundle adds the brilliant GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head. This pan-and-tilt head features independent locks for vertical, lateral, and panning movements, each equipped with its own fluid cartridge for effortless, smooth motion. Despite its compact 4.5-inch height and 2.1lb weight, the head can support camera equipment up to 28.6lb. Plus, its handles are retractable for easy storage.</p><p><strong>Check out the </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/gift-guides-and-seasonal-sales/the-best-black-friday-camera-deals"><strong>best Black Friday camera deals</strong></a></p>

<p>If I had to name an equivalent to the ‘Rolls Royce’ motoring brand in the field of tripod design and manufacturer, it would be Gitzo. To me they’ve always created tripods and accessories of absolutely the finest quality, at the most premium prices. The company itself has French origins dating back to 1917, concentrating on tripods and supports from the 1950s onwards. A key facet of Gitzo design is the pioneering use of carbon fiber and magnesium alloy to create super-sturdy yet relatively lightweight tripods. It’s perhaps not surprising that Gitzo became part of what is now the Videndum Group in 1992, a company that also features Manfrotto in its portfolio.</p><p>The Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head is a typically luxurious product, designed to be a perfect match for Gitzo Series 2 and larger Mountaineer and <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/gitzo-gt5563gs-systematic-series-5-carbon-fiber-tripod-giant-review">Systematic</a> ranges of tripods. However, it has pretty much universal appeal for anyone who wants one of the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-pan-and-tilt-tripod-heads">best 3-way heads</a> for any make and model of <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-tripod">tripods for photographers</a>.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:4233px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="gCKLwkrDfihk4u4XHrYfxc" name="GHF3W 01 intro 1924.JPG" alt="Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head product shot" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gCKLwkrDfihk4u4XHrYfxc.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="4233" height="2381" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gCKLwkrDfihk4u4XHrYfxc.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">Crafted from magnesium alloy, the Gitzo has a classic and eye-catching marbled finish. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Matthew Richards)</span></figcaption></figure><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-gitzo-ghf3w-3-way-fluid-head-specifications"><span>Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head: Specifications</span></h3><div ><table><tbody><tr><td class="firstcol " ><p><strong>Material</strong></p></td><td ><p>Magnesium alloy</p></td></tr><tr><td class="firstcol " ><p><strong>Max load</strong></p></td><td ><p>13kg / 28.7lb</p></td></tr><tr><td class="firstcol " ><p><strong>Weight</strong></p></td><td ><p>0.96kg / 2.1lb</p></td></tr><tr><td class="firstcol " ><p><strong>Height</strong></p></td><td ><p>11.5cm / 4.53"</p></td></tr><tr><td class="firstcol " ><p><strong>Base diameter</strong></p></td><td ><p>60mm / 2.36”</p></td></tr><tr><td class="firstcol " ><p><strong>QR plate</strong></p></td><td ><p>GS5370DR<br>(Arca-Swiss)</p></td></tr></tbody></table></div><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-gitzo-ghf3w-3-way-fluid-head-price"><span>Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head: Price</span></h3><p>Ouch! This tripod head costs $690 / £487 / AU$1,330, although you can often find it quite heavily discounted if you shop around. Even so, the perfectly respectable <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/cameras/tripods/manfrotto-x-pro-3-way-head-review-tilt-pan-and-swivel-in-fine-style">Manfrotto X-PRO 3-way head</a> only costs around a quarter of the price, at $220 / £129 / AU$289. Some say you pay through the nose for the Gitzo badge and that the brand is very overpriced. </p><p>On the other hand, I’ve met a couple of pro photographers who bought Gitzo tripod kits decades ago and are still using them after many years of daily grind in the most demanding conditions, without even a sniff of a problem. One of them said to me he was confident that his Gitzo would be the only tripod he’d <em>ever</em> need to buy. Maybe this head is actually very good value, if you can afford to take the long view.</p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-gitzo-ghf3w-3-way-fluid-head-design-handling"><span>Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head: Design & Handling</span></h3><p>Gitzo products are undeniably stylish, but I’ve never felt they were a case of style of substance. The Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head is definitely substantial, with a payload rating of 13kg / 28.7lb. That’s a lot more than the rating of many a set of tripod legs and certainly more weight than I’d ever need to throw at it. Even so, the head itself is surprisingly lightweight at just 0.96kg / 2.1lb, thanks to clever design and the use of magnesium alloy as the main construction material.</p><p>Sometimes I feel that 3-way heads are substantial in a bad way. Compared with relatively streamlined ball heads, they often have long operating handles that stick out and enlarge the stowage size, as well as having a knack of catching on things as you’re walking around. By contrast, the Gitzo is remarkably compact for such a heavy-duty 3-way head, its packing size being diminished by retractable operating handles for tilt and swivel. It’s certainly not unique in this respect, but the mechanisms are engineered very well with sturdy square shafts.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:4233px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="XA9PP5TEDqAkAwUkGPtvyc" name="GHF3W 1925.JPG" alt="Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head product shot" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XA9PP5TEDqAkAwUkGPtvyc.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="4233" height="2381" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XA9PP5TEDqAkAwUkGPtvyc.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">The retractable handles shrink the stowage size but enable better purchase for smoother movement when extended. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Matthew Richards)</span></figcaption></figure><p>While the handles slide smoothly on their shafts, movement is even more silky when it comes to adjusting the head. This is thanks again to high-quality manufacturing, but also due to the fact that independent fluid cartridges are fitted for each axis. These give a suitably fluid feel to movement. The two retracting handles for tilt and swivel are supplemented by a fixed knob for panning lock/release. As with the other two handles, the panning knob has a graphic that indicates variable friction damping is available – the more you turn the knob, the freer and easier panning becomes.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:4233px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="YLbYPxsiRYB98V2eKTYkxc" name="GHF3W 1926.JPG" alt="Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head product shot" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/YLbYPxsiRYB98V2eKTYkxc.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="4233" height="2381" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/YLbYPxsiRYB98V2eKTYkxc.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">The crescendo graphic on the panning knob (as with the other knobs) indicates a decrease in friction the more you loosen it. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Matthew Richards)</span></figcaption></figure><p>At the base of the head is a clearly marked panning scale. Move the lever in the direction of the arrow (how can you resist?) and you’re able to rotate the camera platform through 90 degrees. This enables you to quickly and easily swap the axes for tilt and swivel.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:4233px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="QBQ5XidHH8A9ThDkySJ4yc" name="GHF3W 1928.JPG" alt="Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head product shot" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QBQ5XidHH8A9ThDkySJ4yc.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="4233" height="2381" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/QBQ5XidHH8A9ThDkySJ4yc.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">The rotation lock/release lever is shown here just to the side of my thumb. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Matthew Richards)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Another bit of trickery is designed into the bubble level. The <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/manfrotto-xpro-ball-head-with-top-lock-review">Manfrotto XPRO Ball Head</a> is one of my favorites. More recently, I’ve rather come full circle, and I’m not just talking about the merits of a 360-degree panning facility. I’m happy to take a little longer setting up a shot, and generally prefer the greater attention to detail that a 3-way head can give me, with its independent locks for tilt, swivel, and panning.</p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:5372px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="gSKts86ysmWrMwKQ3LTY2d" name="GHF3W 1933.JPG" alt="Gitzo GHF3W 3-Way Fluid Head product shot" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gSKts86ysmWrMwKQ3LTY2d.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="5372" height="3022" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gSKts86ysmWrMwKQ3LTY2d.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="caption-text">Independent locks for tilt, swivel, and panning enable ultra-precise adjustments, ideal for architectural, landscape, and close-up photography. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Matthew Richards)</span></figcaption></figure><p>I should also confess that I don’t have the patience of a saint and don’t want to waste time fiddling around for ages when setting up a tripod head. <p>There are various types of tripod heads to consider, including traditional 3-way heads, geared heads, and more specialist items like <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/best-gimbal-heads-for-tripods">gimbal heads</a>, <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-panoramic-tripod-heads">panoramic heads</a>, and <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-pistol-grip-tripod-heads-give-your-tripod-a-joystick-control">pistol-grip heads</a>. For my money, though (and probably yours too), there’s no beating a ball head for quick and easy setup, making it possible to get a vital shot before the moment has passed.</p><p>We often spend a lot of time thinking about <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-tripod">the best tripods</a> to buy, and rightly so, but ball heads often get forgotten about. A good ball head can make a huge difference when it comes to shooting, so it's worth investing in a good one, especially if your tripod came with a relatively humble ball head as part of a kit. So what makes a ball head stand out from the crowd? Particularly for <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-travel-tripod">travel tripods</a>, you want something compact and lightweight, so it doesn't weigh you down. It's worth thinking about the size of your setup and how much weight the head needs to support; if you're using a camera with a long lens attached, the maximum payload capacity is a vital consideration. </p><p>It's best to pick a head with a larger ball diameter: around 40 or 50mm is a good compromise between stability and portability. Of course, if you're using a small camera with diminutive lenses, you can probably get away with something smaller. But fancy ball heads will provide functionality, such as smoother panning movement and well-engineered quick-release systems, often based on the Arca-Swiss standard. An adjustable friction damper is often featured, enabling you to tailor the tactile feel for the camera kit you’re using at any given moment. For shooting video or taking sequences of shots to stitch into a panorama, a ball head with a separate panning lock/release can pay dividends. Let’s take a closer look at the best options on the market.</p><h2 id="the-best-ball-heads-for-tripods">The best ball heads for tripods</h2><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-best-for-ergonomics"><span>Best for ergonomics</span></h3><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="BUmWMXWG3fqZa8hWbC9Phk" name="Manfrotto XPRO Ball Head with Top Lock_DSC5683 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Manfrotto XPRO Magnesium Ball Head review" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BUmWMXWG3fqZa8hWbC9Phk.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/BUmWMXWG3fqZa8hWbC9Phk.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><div class="buying-guide-block"><h3 id="manfrotto-xpro-magnesium-ball-head"><span class="title__text"><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/manfrotto-xpro-ball-head-with-top-lock-review">Manfrotto XPRO Magnesium Ball Head</a></span><span class="chunk rating"><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span></span></h3><div class="_hawk subtitle"><p>A winning tripod ball head that nails the basics</p></div><p class="specs__container"><strong>Max load: </strong>10kg | <strong>Weight: </strong>520g | <strong>Height: </strong>115mm | <strong>Base diameter: </strong>60mm | <strong>QR plate: </strong>Arca-compatible</p><div class="hawk-wrapper"></div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">A winning tripod ball head that nails the basics</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Extremely smooth</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Ergonomic locking levers and friction dial</div><div class="icon icon-minus_circle _hawk">Less compact than some rivals</div></div><p>At first glance, Manfrotto's XPRO ball head doesn’t look particularly special, but there’s more than meets the eye. The magnesium construction is rated to support 10kg: enough for almost any full-frame set-up, yet the head tips the scales at a reasonable 520g.</p><p>At its heart is a fairly large ball for good stability, and its grease-free polymer housing enables exceptionally smooth movement, even with a lot of friction applied. The friction is set using a tactile, clicky wheel that’s better than most systems for dialing in a precise level of drag. Rather than using rubberized or knurled knobs, the ball and pan movement is tightened using levers that lock securely with minimal user effort. In testing, I found that this head was particularly good at resisting any sagging after tightening the main clamp and letting go of the camera.</p><p>The XPRO ball head can be specced with several mounting plate designs. I went for the Top Lock system which is Arca-Swiss compatible, with the QR plate released using a simple but effective button. The top plate is surrounded by three individual bubble levels for precision camera leveling, and they’re all viewable with your camera mounted. </p><p><strong>See our full </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/manfrotto-xpro-ball-head-with-top-lock-review"><strong>Manfrotto XPRO ball head review</strong></a></p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-best-for-professionals"><span>Best for professionals</span></h3><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:1920px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="d4X8tjcpY2scmYbprdwiEk" name="3.jpg" alt="ProMediaGear BH1 ball head" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/d4X8tjcpY2scmYbprdwiEk.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="1920" height="1080" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/d4X8tjcpY2scmYbprdwiEk.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Jamie Carter)</span></figcaption></figure><div class="buying-guide-block"><h3 id="promediagear-bh1"><span class="title__text"><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/promediagear-bh1-professional-ball-head-review">ProMediaGear BH1</a></span><span class="chunk rating"><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span></span></h3><div class="_hawk subtitle"><p>Best professional ball head for your tripod</p></div><p class="specs__container"><strong>Max load: </strong>23kg | <strong>Weight: </strong>920g | <strong>Height: </strong>140mm | <strong>Base diameter: </strong>71.1mm | <strong>QR plate: </strong>Arca-compatible</p><div class="hawk-wrapper"></div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Best professional ball head for your tripod</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Incredible build quality</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">No droop or sag</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Precision control</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Easy switching between landscape and portrait</div><div class="icon icon-minus_circle _hawk">Expensive & heavy</div><div class="icon icon-minus_circle _hawk">No friction control</div></div><p>The ProMediaGear BH1 is a unique ball head that has excellent craftsmanship and ease of use. I liked its flexibility and the fact that I can operate the main lock knob and the pan lock knob quite easily while wearing gloves.</p><p>One thing that really impressed me is that the BH1 shines for its precision and complete lack of droop. All too often with ball heads, you can position a fairly heavy camera and lens, tighten the clamp, and find that everything sags a bit when you let go of the camera. That's certainly not the case with the BH1.</p><p>Sure, it's expensive and its movement is not as smooth as that of some of its rivals, but you're getting something uniquely precise – and if that’s your priority then the BH1 delivers. </p><p><strong>See our full </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/promediagear-bh1-professional-ball-head-review"><strong>ProMediaGear BH1 review</strong></a></p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-best-for-value"><span>Best for value</span></h3><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2304px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="k76VUqukhQsYapgPLuKkSW" name="Manfrotto MH494-BH Ball Head ©ANicholson _DSC7430.jpg" alt="Manfrotto MH494-BH review" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/k76VUqukhQsYapgPLuKkSW.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2304" height="1296" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/k76VUqukhQsYapgPLuKkSW.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson / Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><div class="buying-guide-block"><h3 id="manfrotto-494-center-ball-head"><span class="title__text"><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/manfrotto-mh494-bh-ball-head-review">Manfrotto 494 Center Ball Head</a></span><span class="chunk rating"><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star half"></span></span></h3><div class="_hawk subtitle"><p>Small and affordable, this is an excellent straightforward ball head</p></div><p class="specs__container"><strong>Max load: </strong>8kg | <strong>Weight: </strong>330g | <strong>QR plate: </strong>Arca-compatible</p><div class="hawk-wrapper"></div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">A small, cheap, straightforward ball head</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Integrated QR plate</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Very affordable</div><div class="icon icon-minus_circle _hawk">Simplistic design</div><div class="icon icon-minus_circle _hawk">No bubble level</div></div><p>Keeping things simple doesn't mean compromising on quality. It can support up to 8kg of kit, and offers panoramic and friction control knobs for easy, intuitive operation. This version comes with the 200PL-PRO Quick Release Plate, and the head has an integrated RC2 quick-release cam lock. The aluminum construction is lightweight but reasonably hardy, and there's a dedicated tension control dial for the ball-and-socket movements.</p><p>Compared with many ball heads, the 494 has a very slim profile. Both versions have the same asking price. </p><p><strong>See our full </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/3-legged-thing-airhed-pro-review"><strong>3 Legged Thing AirHed Pro review</strong></a></p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-best-lightweight"><span>Best lightweight</span></h3><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="m5FKNrgKTEdYybD4FXCFUE" name="Benro GX35 Low Profile Ballhead_DSC5636 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="best ball heads for tripods - Benro GX35 Low-profile Ballhead" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/m5FKNrgKTEdYybD4FXCFUE.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><div class="buying-guide-block"><h3 id="benro-gx35-low-profile-ballhead"><span class="title__text"><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/benro-gx35-low-profile-ballhead-review">Benro GX35 Low-profile Ballhead</a></span><span class="chunk rating"><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star"> </span><span class="icon icon-star half"></span></span></h3><div class="_hawk subtitle"><p>A tough yet lightweight and well-priced ball head</p></div><p class="specs__container"><strong>Max load: </strong>35kg | <strong>Weight: </strong>400g | <strong>QR plate: </strong>Arca-compatible</p><div class="hawk-wrapper"></div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">A tough yet lightweight and well-priced ball head</div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Low 85mm head height </div><div class="icon icon-plus_circle _hawk">Good load capacity</div><div class="icon icon-minus_circle _hawk">Friction adjustment not independent</div></div><p>Despite weighing only 400g, the Benro GX35 is able to support a whopping 35kg of camera gear, with extra stability assured by the relatively large 40mm-diameter ball. Build quality also feels reassuringly robust, but the ball movement isn’t quite as fluid-feeling as that of some other tripod heads and the D-ring on the quick-release plate needs to be better attached. Nevertheless, it’s capable of holding heavy lenses and camera set-ups still without drooping.</p><p>Such a hefty payload capacity does mean this isn’t the most portable option, tipping the scales at 577g and measuring 117mm tall, but the overall shape is slim and should sit comfortably within a tripod with flip-up legs. The relatively compact quick-release top plate helps with this, yet it still sports two useful, easily visible bubble levels, and maintains Arca compatibility.</p><p>Vanguard’s chunky, rubber-covered locking knobs are all very easy to grip, though the conventional friction adjustment dial isn’t quite as tactile as Manfrotto’s clicky design.</p><p><strong>See our full </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/vanguard-alta-bh-250-ball-head-review"><strong>Vanguard Alta BH-250 review</strong></a></p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-how-to-choose-the-best-ball-heads-for-tripods"><span>How to choose the best ball heads for tripods</span></h3><p>Many of the considerations around which ball head to use for a tripod depend on what you're going to be using it for. If you want a lightweight option for run-and-fun shooting, then something of either plastic or lightweight metal will be your best bet. Alternatively, if you're working in a studio and want something that isn't going anywhere, then a solid metal construction is the way to go. </p><p>The type of mount is also important. The Arca-Swiss quick-release mounting standard is great for maintaining interchangeable compatibility with other tripod heads, but some manufacturers still stick to proprietary designs.</p><p>The requirement for smooth panning and tilting is another consideration. If you do a lot of these types of shots, then you'll probably want to spend a little bit more to make sure you get the best quality mechanism. There's nothing worse than jittery movements or a tripod head that seizes up after a few months of use. </p><section class="article__schema-question"><h3>How can I avoid camera movement mid-shot?</h3><article class="article__schema-answer"><p>Clamping your ball and pan movement with locking knobs that aren’t grippy enough can result in unwanted camera movement. <p>The Gitzo Légende tripod kit is a special edition of the Gitzo Series 1, 4-section Traveler. The most notable differences are that the Légende has aluminum leg and center column lock grips rather than rubber-covered locks. Also, the included Arca-Swiss compatible Centre Ball Head has a matte silver aluminum finish to match the locks rather than the usual Gitzo crinkled grey finish. </p><p>Gitzo makes the Légende Traveler from 170 parts, all of them replaceable, and 70% of them can be replaced by the user at home. Moreover, once the tripod is registered, it&apos;s covered by a free unlimited warranty.</p><p>The Légende&apos;s 4-section legs and centre column are constructed from Gitzo&apos;s Carbon eXact tubing, which is said to give it superior strength and rigidity while keeping the size down. </p><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="EMvQ6B2zVHgBu5pWgNMP69" name="Gitzo Légende Tripod_DSC6002 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo Legende tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/EMvQ6B2zVHgBu5pWgNMP69.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/EMvQ6B2zVHgBu5pWgNMP69.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>When the legs are collapsed and folded over the column and head, the tripod measures 43cm, making it one of the longer travel tripods. Gitzo supplied a synthetic &apos;Eco-leather&apos; shoulder strap for carrying the tripod between shots.</p><p>With the legs flipped down, ready for action and fully extended, but with the centre column down, the Légende tripod is 141cm in height. Extending the centre column pushes the maximum height to 165cm. </p><p>There are two options for low-level shooting; the first is replacing the centre column with a shorter one supplied in the kit. When this is in place and the legs are splayed to their widest (there are two angles 25° or 70°), the tripod&apos;s height is reduced to just under 31cm. Alternatively, the standard centre column can be removed and reversed to enable the camera to hang upside-down underneath the canopy. </p><p>The included Center Ball Head is from Gitzo&apos;s professional range and is made from high-resistance steel and aluminum. It features a friction control within the ball lock.</p><h2 id="specifications">Specifications</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="jrf4Mng7wrE5ZR6JAseXy8" name="Gitzo Légende_DSC6151 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo Legende tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jrf4Mng7wrE5ZR6JAseXy8.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/jrf4Mng7wrE5ZR6JAseXy8.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p><strong>Material:</strong> Carbon fiber and aluminum</p><p><strong>Folded length:</strong> 430mm</p><p><strong>Maximum height</strong>: 165cm</p><p><strong>No. leg sections:</strong> 4</p><p><strong>Weight: </strong>1.45g</p><p><strong>Maximum load:</strong> 8kg</p><p><br></p><h2 id="build-and-handling">Build and handling</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="NcRFenDH3xpnNYFJPQjMJ9" name="Gitzo Légende Tripod_DSC6001 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo Legende tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NcRFenDH3xpnNYFJPQjMJ9.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NcRFenDH3xpnNYFJPQjMJ9.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>The Gitzo Légende tripod kit looks great, but if you want something a little less noticeable, the standard Series 1, 4 section Traveler makes a great choice. </p><p>Thankfully, the Légende doesn&apos;t just score on the looks front; it also feels very well made. The grips around the leg locks give excellent purchase, and when the legs are collapsed, the locks on each leg are close enough to each other to be undone together. It only takes a quarter turn to loosen and tighten the locks so that the tripod can be deployed quickly. </p><p>The ball lock knob on the tripod head is also large, which means it&apos;s easy to tighten. And within it there&apos;s a control to adjust the friction of the ball movement. Finding the right balance between the lock and the friction control takes a little while, but it&apos;s useful for getting the right freedom of movement with different camera and lens combinations.</p><h2 id="performance">Performance</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="zm2QCTCEwFxaJWaoMszFr8" name="Gitzo Légende Tripod_DSC6003 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo Legende tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zm2QCTCEwFxaJWaoMszFr8.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zm2QCTCEwFxaJWaoMszFr8.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Although the Légende Traveler has a maximum payload of 8Kg, Gitzo recommends that the maximum focal length used with it is around 135-200mm. That&apos;s because it&apos;s the weight distribution that&apos;s really important; it&apos;s the same for all tripods.</p><p>Sure enough, the tripod makes an impressively stable support for a full-frame camera with a standard zoom mounted. Even with the centre column at its maximum height, the tripod feels very rigid, and with it dropped down, I&apos;d feel confident shooting with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens.</p><p>If there&apos;s a breeze, it might be an idea to attach the supplied hook to the bottom of the long centre column to hang a weight, but this tripod is more stable than we usually expect a travel tripod to be. A maximum height of 165cm also pushes the boundaries of a travel tripod.</p><p>When it&apos;s packed down, the Légende Traveler slips fairly easily into the average tripod support on a backpack, but at 43cm in length, it may stick up above the top of smaller bags, and it needs a securing strap to stop it flapping about. I must confess to checking the specifications of the 5-section Series 1 Traveler and enviously noting its 35.5cm closed length.</p><h2 id="verdict">Verdict</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="9FFMda4tYLUn7oepcxGgo8" name="Gitzo Légende Tripod_DSC5999 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo Legende tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9FFMda4tYLUn7oepcxGgo8.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1440" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9FFMda4tYLUn7oepcxGgo8.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>Compared with many other travel tripods, the Gitzo Légende offers a fairly limited range of features. There&apos;s also a thermo-stable fluid pan cartridge (plus a dedicated pan control) that helps deliver jerk-free movement when following subjects moving horizontally.</p><div class="fancy-box"><div class="fancy_box-title">Tripod head guides</div><div class="fancy_box_body"><p class="fancy-box__body-text"><strong>• </strong><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-ball-heads-for-tripods"><strong>Best ball heads for tripods</strong></a><strong><br>• </strong><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-pan-and-tilt-tripod-heads"><strong>Best pan and tilt tripod heads</strong></a><strong><br>• </strong><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/best-gimbal-heads-for-tripods" target="_blank"><strong>Best gimbal heads for tripods</strong></a><strong><br>• </strong><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-panoramic-tripod-heads" target="_blank"><strong>Best panoramic tripod heads</strong></a><strong><br>• </strong><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-geared-tripod-head" target="_blank"><strong>Best geared tripod heads</strong></a><strong><br>• </strong><a data-analytics-id="inline-link" href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-binocular-tripod-adapter" target="_blank"><strong>Best binocular tripod adaptor</strong></a></p></div></div><p>Along with the large locking knob, there&apos;s a friction control wheel to help give the degree of movement that&apos;s required with different camera and lens combinations.</p><p>Gitzo makes two versions of the Series 4 Center Ball Head, the lever lock version (GH4383LR) tested here and a screw version (GH4383QD) with a screw-tight knob to fix the release plate in position. </p><p>For safety, there’s a button on the clamp release lever of the GH4383LR head which must be pressed to allow it to open fully.</p><h2 id="specifications-2">Specifications</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.21%;"><img id="xGivQ4mY5RKWZv3MMqn5tZ" name="Benro GX35 Low Profile Ballhead_DSC5672 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo GH4383LR Center Ball Head Series 4" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xGivQ4mY5RKWZv3MMqn5tZ.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1439" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xGivQ4mY5RKWZv3MMqn5tZ.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p><strong>Height:</strong> 125mm</p><p><strong>Base diameter: </strong>60mm</p><p><strong>Weight:</strong> 900g</p><p><strong>Controls: </strong>ball lock, friction, pan</p><p><strong>Plate compatibility: </strong>Arca-Swiss</p><p><strong>Maximum load:</strong> 30Kg</p><h2 id="build-and-handling-2">Build and handling</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:42.85%;"><img id="E4cSHMFKzdqT93aDT9ZZgZ" name="Benro GX35 Low Profile Ballhead_DSC5657 ©ANicholson_1.jpg" alt="Gitzo GH4383LR Center Ball Head Series 4" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/E4cSHMFKzdqT93aDT9ZZgZ.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2560" height="1097" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>The design and finish of the Series 4 Center Ball Head make it instantly recognizable as a Gitzo product. It also has the high-quality feel that we expect from the respected manufacturer.</p><p>Gitzo has made the head to complement its Series 3, 4 and 5 Systematic tripods, which are aimed at professional photographers, and consequently it has a wide (60mm) base diameter that may overhang less beefy tripods.</p><p>The quick release plate supplied with the head is a Gitzo D profile plate, which is Arca-Swiss compatible but much longer than those supplied with heads such as the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/3-legged-thing-airhed-pro-review" target="_blank">3 Legged Thing AirHed Pro</a> and Benro GX35. This large size should give the camera a more stable platform but it also increases the chance of the battery compartment door being covered. </p><p>There’s a flip out D-ring on the quick release plate bolt, which makes it easy to get it finger-tight, but there’s also a coin slot and a hex socket (a key is supplied). However, neither the slot nor the hex socket are quite deep enough so the key doesn’t fit satisfactorily and it’s a little too easy for it to slip, meaning you have to be extra-careful when you tighten the bolt. It’s disappointing with a brand like Gitzo and with such an expensive head.</p><p>All three of the knobs on the Gitzo head have a ridged rubbery covering that give very good grip. The ball-lock knob has two rows of rubber to make it easily distinguishable from the friction control which has one band of rubber. This control also clicks subtle as it’s rotated so you have a clear sense of the degree of adjustment.</p><h2 id="performance-2">Performance</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.21%;"><img id="9QJEaKPLBRhYgPYXEYG8ca" name="Benro GX35 Low Profile Ballhead_DSC5668 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo GH4383LR Center Ball Head Series 4" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9QJEaKPLBRhYgPYXEYG8ca.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="2560" height="1439" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/9QJEaKPLBRhYgPYXEYG8ca.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.21%;"><img id="6aCb5iSEkRh3GDBrc4byHa" name="Benro GX35 Low Profile Ballhead_DSC5670 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo GH4383LR Center Ball Head Series 4" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6aCb5iSEkRh3GDBrc4byHa.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2560" height="1439" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>While some photographers like the friction control and ball lock to be separate, as they are on this Gitzo head, it takes a while to find the right balance between the two controls for each camera and lens combination. With that done, however, it becomes easier to move a camera and long lens into position and to find the perfect composition before locking the ball tight.  </p><p>Even with the heft and controllability of the Gitzo Series 4 Ball Head, it pays to ensure that your camera and lens are correctly balanced and use the tripod collar on a long optic. If you mount a long heavy lens on a camera and mount the camera directly on the head, you can expect to see a little droop when you let go of the kit after locking the ball, but it’s less than with smaller ball heads.</p><h2 id="verdict-2">Verdict</h2><figure class="van-image-figure inline-layout" data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2560px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.21%;"><img id="uwKTCCzXZPzwzARhCbWcYa" name="Benro GX35 Low Profile Ballhead_DSC5663 ©ANicholson.jpg" alt="Gitzo GH4383LR Center Ball Head Series 4" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/uwKTCCzXZPzwzARhCbWcYa.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2560" height="1439" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=" inline-layout"><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Angela Nicholson/Digital Camera World)</span></figcaption></figure><p>While the Gitzo Center Ball Head Series 4 weighs 900g and is large for a ball head, it can support long heavy lenses and is smaller, lighter and more convenient to carry than a gimbal head. It also makes a more practical option to use with smaller lenses than a gimbal head, so it’s a bit more versatile. However, it’s designed to be paired with a tripod with a large mounting plate, such as the Gitzo  Systematic Series 3, 4 or 5 range. A tripod set-up is only as strong, stable and supportive as the weakest component and if this head is mounted on a small tripod, it won’t deliver optimum performance.</p><ul><li><strong>Read more</strong></li><li><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-tripod" target="_blank"><strong>The best tripod for your camera</strong></a></li><li><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-tripods-for-travel-in-2017" target="_blank"><strong>The best travel tripods right now</strong></a></li><li><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-iphone-tripods-and-supports" target="_blank"><u><strong>The best iPhone tripods and supports</strong></u></a></li><li><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-pan-and-tilt-tripod-heads" target="_blank"><strong>The best pan and tilt tripod heads</strong></a></li><li><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/best-gimbal-heads-for-tripods" target="_blank"><u><strong>Best gimbal heads for tripods</strong></u></a></li><li><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-panoramic-tripod-heads" target="_blank"><strong>The best panoramic tripod heads</strong></a></li></ul>

The GT5563GS does not come with a tripod head, however, or even a center column – these are sold separately. The tripod base plate is removable meaning that a wide range of tripod heads can be attached.</p><p>What&apos;s great about this tripod is that six section legs are made from carbon fibre. this helps keep the overall weight of the tripod down, without sacrificing its load capacity which is whopping 40kg. The tripod also offers a single screw-in accessory socket so you can attach additional grips and mounts for external monitors and lights. </p><p>One of the biggest features of this tripod is how well it is made. The build quality and overall construction are second to none. The materials and design are exceptional. The clips and lock mechanisms have a satisfying feel to them that reflects the price point. In essence, the build quality is so good that you can start to see why it&apos;s so expensive. </p><p>This level of construction obviously important because of how this tripod can be used. At its minimum working height of 10cm you can shoot extremely low to the ground. This offers some interesting perspectives for both indoor and outdoor shots. This working height can be achieved if you&apos;re shooting without a center column and if you widen the tripod leg angle. </p><p>On the opposite side to that, when all of the tripod legs are extended you can reach an impressive height of 278cm. This offers a towering perspective which is difficult, if not impossible with regular tripods. </p><p>The difference between the lowest working height and the highest is incredible and offers a lot of flexibility. This is not just a tripod to be used at extreme heights. You can use it comfortably at any height and its quality continues to shine. </p><figure role="gallery"><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/7spuuYYyrENni97ctKRudL.jpg" alt="Gitzo tripod perspective, low angle versus maximum height" /><figcaption>Lowest working height of 10cm<small role="credit">Sonder Creative</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/z5N4bWbVezp4pSVpd25BkM.jpg" alt="Gitzo tripod perspective, low angle versus maximum height" /><figcaption>Highest working height of 278cm<small role="credit">Sonder Creative</small></figcaption></figure></figure><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-handling-and-performance"><span>Handling and performance</span></h3><figure role="gallery"><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/6RW6NTcep9vpCKVNRCY38X.jpg" alt="Gitzo tripod" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Future</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/skfkQaWDmQ7KDposMUUsqX.jpg" alt="Gitzo tripod" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Future</small></figcaption></figure><figure><img src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Es7XEHePanh8AC6XV4RXeY.jpg" alt="Gitzo tripod" /><figcaption><small role="credit">Future</small></figcaption></figure></figure><p>When using this tripod at normal heights, the quality of its construction and design are outstanding. It&apos;s not the lightest tripod on the market, but the build and construction mean that it&apos;s extremely rigid with very little to no compromise. If extreme stability is a requirement then this tripod does not disappoint. </p><p>Even when shooting at the lowest working height, the tripod remains extremely stable. The clip mechanisms make it really easy to adjust the angle of the legs and lower the tripod to the ground. </p><p>Even in windy conditions, the tripod remained perfectly stationary with very little no give. If you do need any additional stability, the tripod has a metal hook below the base plate to which you can add extra weight. </p><p>The issues generally arise when you need to shoot with this tripod at its maximum height. setting up the tripod and camera is quite the challenge with a number of risks being present when you&apos;re extending the legs out. Even the tallest people will find that attaching a camera to the tripod once it&apos;s fully extended is going to be difficult. Therefore, the tripod needs to have all required devices attached when you&apos;re raising the tripod to its maximum height. A great deal of care is required when attempting this. However this is not really the tripod&apos;s fault; this is simply an expected difficulty of shooting at these heights. </p><p>Another problem is that you probably won&apos;t be able reach the camera to compose correctly, fire the shutter or even adjust any of the settings. Some issues can be remedied with the use of tethered shooting or wireless connections. However, composing correctly is still a challenge. </p><p>Finally, the legs do have a good deal of flex in them when fully extended. This hasn&apos;t caused a lot of problems in the images we&apos;ve taken with the tripod so far. Having said that, it could be an issue if you&apos;re shooting long exposures or if you&apos;re shooting in tougher weather conditions. </p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-verdict"><span>Verdict</span></h3><p>This is probably one of the more exotic tripods on the market. Its price tag and niche features mean that it&apos;s not for everyone. When using the tripod at reasonable working heights, it&apos;s utterly brilliant. However, as you start extending the legs, the issues start mounting. It&apos;s probably a good idea to have a team with you while working with this tripod at extreme heights. </p><p>The Gitzo GT5563GS is a tripod capable of huge heights, but it does lose some of its stability when fully extended. However, as a regular tripod, it&apos;s exceptionally good. This is a top quality professional tripod for any kind of use, and the extra height could prove invaluable when you need it. </p><p><strong>Read more:</strong></p><p><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/buying-guides/best-tripod" target="_blank">Best tripods all round</a><br><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/buying-guides/best-travel-tripod" target="_blank">Best travel tripods</a><br><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/buying-guides/best-video-tripod" target="_blank">Best video tripods</a><br><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/buying-guides/the-best-mini-tripods-tabletop-camera-supports-thatll-fit-in-any-size-kit-bag" target="_blank">Best mini tripods</a><br><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/buying-guides/best-ball-heads-for-tripods" target="_blank">Best ball heads</a><br><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/uk/buying-guides/the-best-pan-and-tilt-tripod-heads" target="_blank">Best pan and tilt heads</a></p>

<p><strong>Peak Design is known for its attention to detail. We’ve seen it in its camera straps, its capture clip camera holder, in its backpacks, messenger bags and slings. So what happens when you bring this attention to detail to a tripod?</strong></p><p>If you&apos;ve got half an hour, watch this Peak Design video. It&apos;s almost certainly better than what&apos;s on TV right now.</p><div class="youtube-video" data-nosnippet ><div class="video-aspect-box"><iframe data-lazy-priority="high" data-lazy-src="https://www.youtube-nocookie.com/embed/xV9Pcw0a0Jo" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></div><p>So here&apos;s what we thought when we got the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/peak-design-travel-tripod-review" target="_blank">Peak Design Travel Tripod</a>. First off, it costs A LOT. Second, its cavalcade of design cleverness soon convinced us it was worth our highest rating on Digital Camera World. So here’s a whistle-stop tour of why, and what on earth we were thinking.</p><p><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/reviews/peak-design-travel-tripod-review" target="_blank"><strong>• Read our Peak Design Travel Tripod review</strong></a></p><h2 id="1-magnets">1. Magnets</h2><p>Peak Design uses them to give the center column knob a satisfying ‘snick’ when you push it back in, to make the weight hook at the bottom of the column locate more easily and to stop the smartphone clamp falling out of the hollow center column when you take the hook out. </p><h2 id="2-smartphone-mount">2. Smartphone mount</h2><p>So this smartphone mount isn’t just slim enough to fit in the center column, it has a fold out base that slides between the rails of an Arca Swiss mount, like the one on the Peak Design head.</p><h2 id="3-low-profile-head">3. Low profile head</h2><p>This head has such a low profile it looks like there isn’t a head there at all. It’s hardly a centimetre higher than the hub on any regular tripod, and yet it’s a fully functioning ball head with a big, flat base and Arca Swiss compatible rails for the titchy Peak Design camera plate.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:910px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.26%;"><img id="zs3aKzLcvKZ9yA74bGpfod" name="StandardPlate-PDP-1-HERO_1024x1024.jpg" alt="Peak Design Travel Tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/zs3aKzLcvKZ9yA74bGpfod.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="910" height="512" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">All this fuss? Over a camera plate? You bet. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Peak Design)</span></figcaption></figure><h2 id="4-camera-plate">4. Camera plate</h2><p>The camera plate may be titchy, but it attaches to the camera with a hex screw that offers far more torque and grip than a regular butterfly nut or coin-slot screw. With this tightened on, your camera is not going to twist on the plate. This plate is also used for the Capture One Clip, so there’s some system compatibility there, and unlike most camera plates, which are typically massive, ugly things you can’t wait to get off the camera, this one is small and slim and could stay on our camera all the time and hardly be noticed. Oh, and it’s omni-directional – you can fit it at four different angles. Handy if you need to insert the camera differently for better vertical movement or to better see the spirit bubble in the tripod head.</p><h2 id="5-tailor-made-bag">5. Tailor-made bag</h2><p>You get a bag (as you’d hope to at this price), but this one fits like a glove, squishes flat if you want to put it in your pocket or a bag while you’re using the tripod, has attachment hoops for a strap, a carry handle and a small internal pocket to hold a special tool for when you want to clean and maintain your cam levers. Yes, that is a thing.</p><h2 id="6-wobble-free-column">6. Wobble free column</h2><p>That stick-think center column is no stick. It’s as rigid as heck and you needn’t think twice about extending it. We’re used to center column wobble in tripods, so to have it entirely absent is weird.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:1578px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.27%;"><img id="NvR4bgZpNPgCibsDnHeCkd" name="peak-design-travel-tripod-dead-volume.jpg" alt="Peak Design Travel Tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/NvR4bgZpNPgCibsDnHeCkd.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="1578" height="888" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">So what the story with the design? It's all about eliminating 'dead volume'. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Peak Design)</span></figcaption></figure><h2 id="7-fits-in-a-cabin-bag">7. Fits in a cabin bag</h2><p>You might want to keep your cabin bag for other things when you’re flying, but you can fit your Peak Design Travel Tripod in it of you want to. Just imagine – no more straps tangled round your ankles, no more tripods falling your face from the overhead locker, and no more smacking fellow passengers in the ear with your tripod as you squeeze down the aisles.</p><h2 id="8-never-lose-your-hex-keys">8. Never lose your hex keys</h2><p>The Peak Design Travel Tripod does rely on its little pair of hex keys, but you’ll always have them with you because they push into a special holder that clamps securely to one the legs. And you don’t like that, there’s an eyelet that lets you attach the hex keys to a key ring (appropriately enough).</p><h2 id="9-systemized-accessories">9. Systemized accessories</h2><p>If you love fiddling with addons and gadgets, screws and clips, you’ll love the extras for the Peak Design Travel tripod. There’s a regular tripod head attachment kit in case you already have a head you can’t bear to be without, a spike kit for rough and tough outdoor shooting and an ultralight kit which swaps out the bottom four leg sections for a single elongated pointed foot. </p><h2 id="10-9kg-payload-xa0">10. 9kg payload </h2><p>What’s the heaviest camera/lens combo you’ve got? A full frame D-SLR with a 70-200mm f/2.8? No, it’s not enough. Not even close. This is a travel tripod that can easily handle a big, fat DSLR and an even bigger, fatter supertelephoto without buckling.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:2026px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.27%;"><img id="3zzBWMQpxp2CUNkJZWhdhd" name="peak-design-travel-tripod-aluminium-vs-carbonfiber.jpg" alt="Peak Design Travel Tripod" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/3zzBWMQpxp2CUNkJZWhdhd.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="" width="2026" height="1140" attribution="" endorsement="" class=""></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">So the aluminium version is not much more than half the price of the carbon fiber one. NOW you're interested. </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Peak Design)</span></figcaption></figure><h2 id="11-you-can-get-it-for-42-less">11. You can get it for 42% less</h2><p>You don’t have to pay over $500/£500 to get all this. That price is for the carbon version. There is a cheaper (a much cheaper) aluminum version which has all the gadgets without the price tag. If you can live with 20% less stiffness, 23% more weight (is that all?) and 42% less cost (whoa!), then get the aluminum one.</p><p><strong>Read more:</strong></p><p>• These are the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-travel-tripod" target="_blank">best travel tripods</a> right now<br>• We pick the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-tripod" target="_blank">best tripod</a> for all round photography<br>• These are the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-travel-camera" target="_blank">best cameras for travel</a><br>• The <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-camera-backpacks" target="_blank">best camera backpacks</a> right now<br>• <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/news/gitzo-3-way-fluid-head-engineers-a-touch-of-luxury-for-your-tripod" target="_blank">Gitzo 3-way Fluid Head</a></p>

<p>Our search for <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-camera-bag">the best camera bag</a> continues with the Gitzo Adventury. As the suitably outdoorsy name suggests, if you live in walking boots and eat Kendal Mint Cake like it’s going out of fashion, this is probably the bag for you.</p><p>The Adventury stars on our <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-camera-backpacks">best camera backpack in 2020</a> buyer’s guide, and it’s easy to see why. This premium rucksack is built specifically for use on the trail, and boasts ample storage for both camera gear and hiking essentials. It features a wealth of compartments, and the internal dividers can be removed so that the Adventury doubles as a generic hiking backpack, too.</p><p>You can choose between 45L and 30L variants. We tested the latter, which measures 30.9 x 18.9 x 48cm (12.2 x 7.48 x 18.9 inches) and weighs 2.05kg (4.52 lbs). The camera insert alone measures 23 x 16 x 37.9cm (9.06 x 6.3 x 14.96 inches) and is able to hold two DSLR bodies (one with a 200mm lens) on one row of dividers and four smaller lenses, nestled upright, on the other.</p><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-features"><span>Features</span></h3><p>Plenty of camera bags feature oodles of space within the main compartment, but offer very little room elsewhere. And yet hikers carry their fair share of equipment: first aid kit, spare clothes, waterproof, snacks, maps and more. Thankfully, the Adventury is teeming with additional pockets and compartments.</p><p>A standout feature is the sizable roll top, which you can expand or retract depending on your requirements. This alone has enough space to store most hiking essentials and doesn’t encroach on the gear compartment. Generous side pockets flank the bag and a small but deceivingly roomy pouch that bears the Gitzo logo is situated near the top. Its easy access and size makes it the perfect place to store your wallet, phone and a folded map.</p><p>You gain access to the main compartment via the padded backrest, which folds out to reveal pockets for a 13-inch laptop (15-inch on the 45L variant) and a tablet. A zipped mesh flap protects the main compartment, too, so you can access your laptop without any fear of expensive gear tumbling out.</p><p>The Adventury is also loaded with other features. Straps enable you to attach a tripod at the sides or front of the backpack, and chest and waist straps help support heavy loads. You’ll even find a small emergency whistle and yet more straps on the base, with which to attach a bedroll.</p><a target="_blank"><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:7060px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.26%;"><img id="xFxAnWgukEnE9pvQwZgL47" name="Gitzo_Adventury_interior.jpg" alt="The Gitzo Adventury has a removable camera insert and ample space for hiking essentials." src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xFxAnWgukEnE9pvQwZgL47.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="7060" height="3972" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/xFxAnWgukEnE9pvQwZgL47.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">The Gitzo Adventury has a removable camera insert and ample space for hiking essentials </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Future)</span></figcaption></figure></a><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-usability"><span>Usability</span></h3><p>The Adventury’s padded back support is comfortable and the thick shoulder straps feel durable, even when using just one to support a heavy load. Clips and other plastic elements feel tough enough for use in the field and the slider on the chest strap is a nice touch, making it easy to adjust.</p><p>Visit the Lake District and rain is almost a certainty. Weatherproof materials are a hiking essential, and the Adventury doesn’t disappoint. Not only is it covered in water-repellent fabric, but external zippers are coated to help prevent leaks. The base of the rucksack is coated, too, which is helpful if you’re working on damp ground. And if it gets too wet, you can use the included rain cover, which can be stowed away in its own pouch when not in use.</p><p>The expandable roll top is a great addition, because the additional storage is there should you need it. If you don’t, you can simply roll it up securely and forget about it. Some might consider the mesh flap that covers the main compartment unnecessary, as you essentially have to undo two sets of zippers to reach your camera gear. </p><p>However, if you don’t want to use it, you can simply tuck it beneath the main compartment insert and it won’t bother you again. The insert itself fits snugly within the bag and is further secured via a pair of loops and toggles. If the rucksack wasn’t customizable enough already, the multi-link strap can be stowed in its own dedicated pocket.</p><p>There’s very little not to like about the Gitzo Adventury. Its thick straps and wealth of pockets and compartments might prove too bulky for some, but this is a bag that’s built for hardcore landscape or wildlife photographers. If you’re looking for a rucksack that’s built to withstand life on the trail, look no further.</p><a target="_blank"><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:6048px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.25%;"><img id="HcLp7bZhmv3pkspRxvW9SU" name="Gitzo_Adventury_lifestyle.jpg" alt="The Gitzo Adventury is aimed at landscape and wildlife photographers who spend plenty of time out in the field" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HcLp7bZhmv3pkspRxvW9SU.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="6048" height="3402" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/HcLp7bZhmv3pkspRxvW9SU.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="caption-text">The Gitzo Adventury is aimed at landscape and wildlife shooters who spend plenty of time in the field </span><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Future)</span></figcaption></figure></a><h3 class="article-body__section" id="section-verdict"><span>Verdict</span></h3><p>The Gitzo Adventury is the ideal companion for landscape and wildlife photographers who need to carry more than just their camera gear. A sizable roll top provides ample room for hiking essentials, which not every outdoorsy rucksack provides. Add to that a sturdy, comfortable build and suitable weatherproofing, and both 30L and 45L variants come highly recommended for rambling photographers.</p><p><strong>Read more:</strong></p><p><strong>The </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-camera-bag" target="_blank"><strong>best camera bags</strong></a><strong> and cases<br>The </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-messenger-bags-for-photographers" target="_blank"><strong>best messenger bags for photographers<br></strong></a><strong>The </strong><a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-camera-backpacks" target="_blank"><strong>best camera backpacks</strong></a></p>

<p>Luxury tripod manufacturer Gitzo has announced a major new addition to its range of heads. The Gitzo 3-way Fluid Head GHF3W replaces four existing pan/tilt heads in its range – and borrows engineering features that are found in sister brand&apos;s Manfrotto X-Pro 3-Way Head (one of the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/the-best-pan-and-tilt-tripod-heads" target="_blank">best pan-and-tilt heads</a> available).</p><p>The GHF3W weighs 955g but its aluminum and magnesium construction is designed to support a camera rig weighing up to 13kg. </p><p>A key new feature for this head is the innovative ergonomic retractable tilt handle - similar to those seen on the Manfrotto X-Pro head. </p><p>An innovative addition is a twisting bubble level, that allows you to check for both vertical and horizontal alignment simply by rotating the device on the side.</p><p>The head comes with a 7cm rubberized Arca-Swiss type plate and quick release holder cameras attach to the head by pressing down firmly against the holder base. The base’s width is easily adjusted via the side screws for use with other plates. </p><p>The plate holder can be rotated through 90° (essentially giving you a fourth controllable movement. Ths is said to allow greater working versatility and framing – helping photographers to switch from portrait to landscape, and make it very easy to shoot overhead and below.</p><figure class="van-image-figure " data-bordeaux-image-check ><div class='image-full-width-wrapper'><div class='image-widthsetter' style="max-width:7091px;"><p class="vanilla-image-block" style="padding-top:56.24%;"><img id="gHWQY3iz6KtHsUHpmHnyjA" name="" alt="Gitzo 3-way Fluid Head GHF3W" src="https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gHWQY3iz6KtHsUHpmHnyjA.jpg" mos="" align="middle" fullscreen="1" width="7091" height="3988" attribution="" endorsement="" class="expandable"><a href='https://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/gHWQY3iz6KtHsUHpmHnyjA.jpg' target='_blank' class='expand-button icon-expand-image icon' ></a></p></div></div><figcaption itemprop="caption description" class=""><span class="credit" itemprop="copyrightHolder">(Image credit: Gitzo)</span></figcaption></figure><h2 id="specifications-3">Specifications</h2><p><strong>Weight</strong>: 955 g</p><p><strong>Maximum</strong> <strong>payload</strong>: 13 kg</p><p><strong>Material: </strong>Aluminum, Magnesium</p><p><strong>Base</strong> <strong>diameter</strong>: 60 mm</p><p><strong>Plate</strong> <strong>type</strong>: GS5370DR</p><p><strong>Front</strong> <strong>tilt</strong>: -70° / +90°</p><p><strong>Lateral</strong> <strong>tilt</strong>: -30° / +90°</p><p><strong>Panoramic</strong> <strong>rotation</strong>: 360°</p><p><strong>Working</strong> <strong>height</strong>: 11.5 cm</p><p><br></p><p>The Gitzo 3-way Fluid Head features an independent fluid cartridge for each axis and guarantees silky smooth, seamless movement, without a trace of stick-slip. <p><strong>Most of us dream of owning a Gitzo tripod... with this new table top model your dreams may not only come true, but the mini support is small enough to take wherever you go.</strong></p><p>The Gitzo MIni Traveler is hailed to be the world&apos;s most compact professional-grade carbon fibre tripod. Aimed at high-end photographers, who wish to travel light and most frequently make use of medium-sized optics on their DSLR or mirrorless camera (take a look at our list of the <a href="https://www.digitalcameraworld.com/buying-guides/best-travel-camera-in-2017" target="_blank">best travel cameras</a> right now), the Mini Traveler benefits from the same precision-engineered carbon fibre and aluminium structure as other tripods in the Gitzo range. The materials are treated using a special anodic oxidation processes for added durability. </p><p>Weighing just 265g with the supplied aluminum Mini Traveler GH1382TQD ball head attached, and can support a maximum payload of 3kg.
