SmallRig has announced a new camera cage that snuggly houses a Canon EOS R5 Mark II with the optional CF-R20EP cooling grip attached. It's the latest in a line from a company that already makes some of the best camera rigs and cages for a wide range of camera bodies (with and without various attachments).

The SmallRig Cage for Canon EOS R5 Mark II with Cooling Fan CF-R20EP (product code 5092 for short) is designed to protect the camera while offering a range of versatile expansion options. It is secured to the camera with one 1/4"-20 tripod-mount screw at the bottom and two M3 screws on either side, while integrated silicone pads prevent scratches. The cage allows unobstructed access to buttons, card slots, and battery compartments.

The cage is equipped with multiple 1/4"-20 and 3/8"-16 threaded holes, as well as ARRI locating holes, to accommodate a whole host of SmallRig accessories, including top handles for smooth camera movements, side handles, monitor mounts, and magic arms. SUB13 make some of the only underwater housings for Leica cameras, and it recently announced the release of the world’s first housing for the Leica M.

Leica announced the revival of the M6 film camera in 2022, 20 years after production stopped, to mark 70 years of Leica M.

SUB13 is the brainchild of artist Matt Draper – a personal project seven years in the making, driven by Draper’s desire and commitment to fuse Leica’s manual focus rangefinder with his fine art printing – eventually creating this fully functioning underwater housing.

The company, which includes engineer Matt Hipsley, has previously made underwater housings for the Leica M series rangefinders and the Q3,

Draper told DCW: “Each unit features a fully functional film advance lever machined from solid titanium, hand-polished, and finished in bronze PVD coating. The detailed internal actuator is set behind a curved viewing window sculpted from sapphire glass, allowing owners to observe the complete motion of their film advance.

“The housing’s lever precisely mirrors the radius of the viewing window below, seamlessly blending form and function. Over a year of dedicated design, engineering, and prototyping preceded the final machining to achieve their exacting standards.”

While the front port has been machined as part of the main body, it has been carefully designed and engineered to accommodate eight different M lenses, ranging from 28mm to 50mm.

The beautiful piece of kit is independently certified to maximum recreational scuba depths of 130 feet (40 meters), and is compatible with the M6, M6 TTL, and the M7.

SUB13 only made 13 units of the housing, which sold for $7,495, including a special model for the Leica Store Bellevue with a laser engraved, paint-filled detail of a killer whale to celebrate the state's iconic marine mammal.

They’re now all sold out with no plans to make any more.

As we all know, cameras are precious and pricey pieces of kit, and the last thing a proud owner of a spanking brand-new mirrorless (or not-so-new DSLR) wants is for their pride and joy to pick up scratches and scrapes while out and about on outdoor adventures.

3 Legged Thing – the British camera accessories maker best known for its quirkily named series of tripods – has announced new designs and an additional size for its Wrapz range of self-adhesive, reusable, protective, padded and water-resistant cloth wraps for keeping your photography and tech gear safe from the rigors of everyday life. It's vacation season and with four grandchildren in tow, my calendar is dotted with day trips, weekend outings and a holiday at the seaside. There’s always a lot to pack. 

Top of the list is my trusty Nikon Z 6II, one of the all-time best Nikon cameras and not to be left at home. I always used to pack a couple of extra lenses but have been limiting myself to the excellent Nikon Z 24-200mm f/4-6.3 VR. It’s truly outstanding and one of the most versatile lenses for Nikon cameras. 

Even so, the kids have a whole load of paraphernalia they insist on bringing and can’t seem to do without. I’ve often felt like a pack mule, with my camera backpack or bag over one shoulder, and another backpack full of daily essentials over the other. I’ve certainly amassed some of the best camera bags over the years, but something had to give.

A life-changing moment of clarity came in the shape of a 45cm (18-inch) square 3 Legged Thing Wrapz. So what’s that? Well, it’s basically a padded cloth that folds around a camera, lens, flashgun or any other photographic (or non-photographic) bit of fragile kit. Like other ‘lens wraps’ (there are many), it has a hook-and-loop type material that sticks to itself once wrapped around, forming a secure, protective cover. Most are similar in price and available in a selection of different sizes. Mine is the largest Wrapz size available, typically costing $25/£25, and I chose the ‘Wrapz’ over many alternatives because it has the advantage of an inner waterproof membrane. That gives me (or at least my camera) an extra sense of security and feelgood factor.

The net result is that I can cosset my camera and attached lens in a protective wrap, then unceremoniously dump it into the same bag as all the other bits and pieces that need to head off for a day at the beach, down to the woods, out to a theme park or pretty much anywhere else. And because life isn’t one long holiday, it’s every bit as effective for dropping my camera into my work bag so I don’t need to miss any photo opportunities on the daily commute. It’s literally in the bag.

When the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being struck by the stricken Dali cargo ship, the world could have been watching live. Most folk weren't of course, but they could have been.

Baltimore is far from the only place with streaming cameras that viewers can sit and watch, though. In San Diego, a major Naval port, these webcams are popular with many (including military families). When the Key Bridge fell, the American Naval police – the NCIS – were in the courts trying to shut down similar cameras as a 'national security issue'.

Though the cameras had been around for years, in November 2022 there was a near miss when two US Navy vessels nearly hit each other. The ships were the dock landing ship USS Harpers Ferry (5120 tons dead weight / 11731 tons displacement) and the guided-missile destroyer USS Momsen (2381 tons dead weight / 7134 tons displacement).

A video clip of the incident went viral and was often tagged as 'Warship Chicken." The camera was on National Parks property (at a popular public viewing spot). As Forbes notes, being in a National Park made it vulnerable to government demands. NCIS requested they be taken down, but they didn't stop there.

A little later a camera caught a refitted ship that now looked 'bug-eyed' and, apparently, didn't enjoy the mockery from military geeks online. NCIS then made a similar demand of a camera on a private site.

What's interesting about this is that ships in the US with new warfare systems routinely pass the cameras. In times past Soviet or other surveillance ships would be hanging out in international waters to monitor naval ports, but now we're talking about things anyone can see from public or private land.

It's also noteworthy that NCIS's interest in these cameras came only when very public embarrassment – rather than a military risk – was at stake. Nonetheless the NCIS achieved its aim of shutting down the camera, even though it was in a public space capturing matters of public interest.

One of the enthusiasts behind the cameras, and very much a fan of the US military, Barry Bahrami pointed out that you could get a view for a quarter through telescopes in the area – something NCIS declined to comment on to the Navy Times when they investigated.

Ultimately the ACLU won, with the US government's attempt to side-step the First Amendment proving too thin for the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, some of the details the ACLU share on their own site. Like many of you I am sure you have wondered what the new Apple Vision Pro is like to use and if it could be something you could see using in the future – well YouTube sensation Casey Neistat has done what we all want to do, wear the Apple Vision Pro around NYC, and see if it really if the future.

Casey must have liked it as he tweeted this about the Vision Pro:

You can watch the video below of Casey putting the Vision Pro through its paces, but on watching the video myself and seeing that many onlookers thinking you're crazy.... I might pass on this generation, or at least when this type of computer is more "mainstream."

In the video, Casey makes the point that this device makes no sense being used in an office environment where you can have multiple monitors at your disposable, but the whole concept changes when you take it and wear it outside – it then becomes the portable computing solution that everyone has tried to achieve for the last 15 years.

Bold claim? Only you can decide for yourself, but I thought it was pretty neat when I watched it.

It has only just been announced – only in the wee hours of the morning today (August 30) – and you can already save a little money on Sony's latest full-frame snapper.

The Sony A7C II is the lovechild of some of the electronics giant's older full-frame mirrorless cameras, taking bits and bobs from the likes of Sony A7R V, Sony A6700 and the vlogging specialist that is the Sony ZV-E1. That in itself means this could well be the complete package – compact and lightweight to take on travels, plus top-notch performance that we've come to expect from Sony's cameras. We did put the camera to the test ourselves and you can take a look at our in-depth Sony A7C II review to see how it performs.

The camera is up for pre-order directly from Sony and authorised dealers for an RRP of AU$3,499 body only, but one Aussie retailer is offering AU$200 off that price. And is throwing in a bonus Samsung portable SSD worth AU$348 into the bargain.

So, what do you get for your money? It starts with a 33MP back-illuminated sensor (compared to 24MP in the A7C) paired with Sony's Bionz XR imaging engine that's done really well since it debuted in the A7S III back in 2020.

There's also an AI processor that Sony says will give the second-generation model up to eight times the speed of the predecessor, allowing it to capture continuously up to 10fps with autoexposure and autofocus through the burst. This should also bump up the buffer memory, promising to capture 1000+ JPEGs or 44 RAW files in one go or, if you're shooting in RAW+JPEG, then you'll get 20 files of each.

Autofocus is a 759-point phase-detect system and these will cover 94% of the frame, with the ability to focus in low light down to -4.0EV (again, a slight improvement over the first-gen A7C). In-camera focus stacking also gets an improvement of up to 299 frames.

Physically, the new camera is oh-so-marginally different from its predecessor, but is strikingly similar to the Sony A6700. Sony claims the camera setup, with redesigned dials and customisable buttons is more ergonomic, but it's a shame there's nothing quite new here.

The EVF is from the rangefinder A6700, so you get a 2.36 million-dot OLED panel with a 0.7x magnification. Compared to the A7C, though, this is an improvement. The rear 3-inch LCD display has a 1.03 million-dot resolution and gets Sony's latest touch interface that's a lot more user-friendly than what we saw in the older camera. 

And there's only a single UHS-II SD card slot here.

So while there's a lot of familiar specs here, they're from different Sony cameras and, in one package, is a major improvement over the original A7C. So if you're keen on an upgrade, pre-order now and save a little cash and get some freebies too.

The best dry cabinet is an investment that can pay dividends for photographers and videographers. Essentially, these specialist camera cupboards allow you to protect your precious equipment from the damaging effects of humidity and moisture by sealing them in a carefully controlled environment, potentially saving you thousands in repairs or replacements.

These cabinets are most commonly used in humid, tropical climates. However, as fungus can grow easily inside cameras and lenses, these dry storage units can be a great investment when storing anywhere there is a risk of your kit getting damp.

Several different manufacturers make dry cabinets and come in wildly differing sizes. Our first entry is the smallest on the list, with a capacity of just 18 litres. But for many people with just a camera and a standard lens to protect, that will be plenty. And it means you won't have to spend too much money, or take up too much space in your home or studio.

This dry cabinet protects your gear from fungus and corrosion by regulating the interior's relative humidity from 35-60%. It has a lockable, rubber-sealed glass door, with two keys, and a front plastic handle.

Best for 3 or more cameras

If you have three or more cameras and lenses, you may find that (as the above photo suggests), the T.A.P 38L Dry Cabinet is large enough to store all of them. While you do so, the condensation drying system will keep it safe from humidity and degradation, and you can set a humidity range between 25% and 70%. If you have a larger-than-average camera or video camera, you may need something like this 80-litre dry cabinet to keep it safe. Its dimensions are plenty spacious, and the bottom of the cabinet has four rubber feet; two of which are leveling feet for installing on uneven surfaces.

As with its smaller Ruggard cousins, this cabinet has a lockable, rubber-sealed glass door, with two keys, and a front metal handle. SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage features

SmallRig's Retro Handheld Cage Kit can help you to reach low shooting and filming angles with the Fujifilm X-T5, thanks to its ergonomic leather handle that gives you a better grip from above. The kit itself includes the main cage – made from metal – with a top handle and an HDMI & USB-C cable clamp, as well as a hot shoe cover and a shutter button adapter. I'll come onto design and handling later, but the overall style is very much steampunk.

It features several accessory mounting points, including a 1/4"-20 threaded hole, 3/8"-16 threaded hole, ARRI 3/8"-16 locating hole, cold shoe mount and NATO rail.  The camera cage can also be mounted onto Arca-Swiss tripods using the Arca-Swiss quick-release plate at the bottom.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage Build & handling

The SmallRig Retro Cage for the Fujifilm X-T5 isn't a typical all-black photography rig designed to blend into the camera and shooting environment. Instead, it makes a statement and leans into the classic vibe of the camera it was designed for. The cage itself is made from metal and has a cowhide leather grip (sorry vegans), it's heavily styled, and by that, I don't mean that it weighs a lot – simply that it's got a look that some will love and others might not. 

Its retro design is inspired by vintage fashion, and the black titanium cage features bronze edges and gold rivets. The metal itself feels well-made and durable, while it has the intentional appearance of rust in places – thanks to a "distressed" finish that means each cage is unique.

On the cage itself, there's a well-positioned shutter button, a hot shoe cover with a small bubble level, and then several accessory mounting points for video lights, microphones and more. The handle is screwed on to give a comfortable handholding experience, and crucially, it doesn't cover the hot shot mount and gives you enough clearance so that you can access other areas of the camera.

The screw-on USB-C and HDMI cable clamp is used to give you access to the camera interface without having to remove the rig. The balance of the handle is satisfying, too, so the camera doesn't feel top-heavy during use. This rig comes in several separate parts and requires minimal assembly to set it up for use. You get an Allen wrench in the box for this purpose, so you don't need any extra tools to get started.

Personally, I think the design of the SmallRig Retro Cage is pretty cool and different enough from its other cages (like this Canon EOS R5 version, on Amazon) to stand out and suit the X-T5. But it's something to bear in mind if the style of your gear is important – and this doesn't fit it.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage performance

The SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage is built to make handheld shooting with the Fujifilm X-T5 easier and smoother. It does both of these things effectively and is easy to put together and take apart again when you want to remove it from the camera. However, it is also quite easy to lose small parts of the cage kit like the shutter button adapter, so it's a good idea to keep them in a zipped part of your camera bag when you're not using them. A bag would have been nice for storing the rig, but maybe this is added weight that you don't really need.

The shutter button adapter does a perfectly good job of pressing the shutter down – although personally, I preferred to go without it – and the HDMI cable clamp makes a reliable connection when the camera is linked up to an external monitor to prevent cable pull-out or damage to the HDMI connection port in the event of an accident.

Unlike many plastic rigs on the market, this SmallRig cage is made from sturdy metal, which helps to secure the camera in place and stop it from rocking. Its strength also means that you can support accessories very comfortably and still perform smooth movements for a video like pans, tilts and cranes.

SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage verdict

The SmallRig Retro Handheld Cage Kit for the Fujifilm X-T5 is slick, secure and lightweight. It fits snugly around the camera and keeps close to the body’s form factor, which means that there's no rattling around while shooting.

The style of the cage won't suit everyone, but I like the striking design and feel it matches the retro aesthetic of the X-T5 well. There are enough mounting options for adding common accessories while you're shooting stills and videos, and the rig can handle them all. It's more expensive than a standard black rig, so you are paying more for build quality, but if you want a stylish rig to match your X-T5, it won't let you down.

Orangemonkie has been making some of the most affordable and best light tents for product photography, and its latest option aims to simplify the process of getting videos and stills of objects for eBayers and website owners.

Yes, many upmarket DSLR and mirrorless cameras are weather-sealed. But this only protects them up to a point, and they may not stand up to a serious downpour. If you're serious about wet-weather shooting and want the best rain cover for your camera and lenses, this is my top recommendation, although be warned, it's not cheap. This rain cover is made from Denier Nylon fabric, which is beautifully watertight, sturdy enough to protect your gear, and flexible enough to fold up nicely. It has a handy front cover to keep your lens dry while you're waiting to shoot. It's got lots of zippers and different openings, making it suitably flexible.

Yes, it's a bit fiddly to attach. And yes, it's on the pricey side. But if it helps you get that perfect shot or saves your camera from damage (or both), it's surely worth the investment.

Make sure you get the right one for your camera, though, as the Hydrophobia comes in a range of sizes. When you get down to it, a good camera rain cover doesn't need to be complicated. It needs to protect your camera from the elements while also allowing you to keep on shooting. This is a target that the Think Tank Emergency Rain Cover hits perfectly, for a relatively affordable price.

The DWR (Durable Water Repellent) coating fends off moisture from the outside, while the extensive seals ensure there's no chance of ingress through the material. The Rainsleeve is essentially a clear plastic bag that fits over the camera, and you insert your hands through an opening. You get two sleeves in every pack, and it's designed to take up next to no room in the corner of your camera bag, until the day you get caught out by the weather.

This rain cover is designed to work in harmony with Peak Design’s popular Capture Clip system, which enables you to attach your camera to a belt or bag strap while it’s in its cover, making it easier for you to stay on the move when it’s raining.

The stretchy neoprene sleeve slips over your lens and onto the camera body, with drawstring cords tightening around the base and lens to create a snug fit. A couple of well-sealed slots allow your camera’s strap to pass through the top.

Although the Shell looks neat and tidy when fitted, the cover needs to be folded back awkwardly to use your camera; even then, the lens is still obscured, making this better suited to protecting a prime optic. It's a clever concept, but not without its limitations.

While it’s true that there are many great waterproof cameras out there, many of which can sink to impressive depths, waterproof cases and housings still have an edge for a number of reasons. Waterproof compacts are not terribly sophisticated as far as camera tech goes; they tend to have smaller sensors than the best mirrorless cameras and the best DSLRs, and lack advanced imaging features such as high frame rates, sophisticated autofocus systems and high-quality 4K video.

What's more, if you do all your snapping on one of the best smartphones for photography, or one of the best GoPros, it makes sense to pick up a cheaper housing for your device, as this will likely set you back less than a dedicated tough camera. Protective underwater cases for phones can vary from simple pouches to more robust cases that are tailored to individual models. When picking a good underwater case for a phone, make sure it will also allow you full operation of the touchscreen, so that you’ll be able to shoot to your full ability without compromising the waterproofing.

Best underwater smartphone case

Technically your iPhone 15 is able to film while submerged at a depth of up to 18 meters for 30 minutes, which makes it water resistant (but not waterproof due to the time limit). However, would you really want to risk your expensive iPhone on a deep dive? The JOBY SeaPal enables your iPhone to go where no other grips can take it - underwater! While other iPhone users may be limited to capturing shore-based activities on a beach holiday the SeaPal’s waterproof casing enables you to use your iPhone to shoot shoals of fish on a snorkeling trip (up to a depth of 10 meters/33 feet.) Another bonus of keeping your iPhone sealed in SeaPal’s case is that it will be protected from being smeared in suntan lotion or being ingressed by sand particles.

The JOBY SeaPal Waterproof Case takes a little time to set up for the first time (say 15 minutes), but then you’re good to go. It ships with a collection of rubber mounts that you need to clip into the body of the case to fit your particular iPhone or smartphone model. A downloadable manual gives you a clear diagram of which rubber mounts to insert and where to place them. After an initial waterproofing test you can pop your iPhone into the case and rotate a large plastic button to seal it in. Make sure that the knob makes a satisfying click to endure that the case is fully sealed.

The front of the case has a large glass port for your iPhone’s three lenses to shoot through. This glass is superior to cheaper third-party plastic cases that may be more prone to fogging up. The SeaPal case’s glass is also scratch-resistant so your shots and clips should look pristine. On the rear of the case is a plastic membrane. This is thin enough for you to interact with your iPhone’s screen while filming underwater, so you can swipe in the Camera app to change shooting modes or trigger a recording.

Best smartphone case for deeper dives

For serious diving, then this polycarbonate case is just the ticket. It claims to fit most popular iPhones and Galaxy handsets - so you may still be able to use it when you upgrade your camera phone (and you can also share it with friends). The 15m depth rating makes it suitable for sub-aqua use - but will also appeal to those into sailing and other water sports. You do need to set up the phone before you put in the housing, as the only control you get is the shutter button. As ever with any housing, you do need to follow the instructions for checking the seal every time you use it.

Best cheap smartphone underwater case

While many of the housings on this list can be quite pricey, if you’re after a real bargain then we’d recommend this pouch from JOTO. Styled as universal, it’s a straightforward product that will work with pretty much any smartphone that physically fits inside it. Once you’ve sealed the clamps (and it pays to double-check, here) then your phone will be protected down to about 30m of water, and you’ll be able to take pictures through the clear window on both the front and rear sides. Some users report some difficulty using the touchscreen so it may take a few tries, but if you’re after a bargain underwater case, this is unbeatable.

Best shallow-water cases for cameras

Here we’ve picked out some of the best dedicated cases for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras that work in shallower waters. These aren’t the choice for deep-sea diving, but for snorkelling and shallow-water shooting with your camera, they’ll work perfectly. Bear in mind also that there are lots of different models for different types of camera, and space doesn’t permit us to cover them all, but Aquatech, Dicapac and Ewa-marine – the makes we’ve chosen for this section – produce many different housings, so it’s worth heading to the website to see if the manufacturer offers a housing compatible with your camera.

We've also picked out some options for GoPro cameras. While GoPros and other action cameras will be waterproof up to a point, dedicated housings allow you to take them much deeper than you would otherwise, making them a good choice for snorkelling and shallow diving alike.

Best underwater camera housing for mirrorless

The EDGE range of housings from Aquatech – the manufacturer who collaborated with Joby for the SeaPal case featured above – is available for a broad range of mirrorless and compact cameras from Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm and Leica. There are also options for select Fujifilm GFX medium-format cameras, and two cameras from Sony's FX cinema range (the FX3 and FX30).

The range is split into 'Pro' and 'Base', the main difference being that the Pro housings are designed for specific model of cameras, and offer push-button controls on the rear for underwater settings changes. The 'Base' housings are more affordable, but don't offer button controls, meaning you have to decide on your camera settings before you get into the water.

Able to safely descend to depths of 10m, the EDGE housings are great for snorkelling and shallow diving. They're durably built, and can be customised with additional accessories such as a right-side handle for a secure grip.

Best DSLR underwater housing

Dicapac makes a whole host of straightforward underwater bag-style housings for DSLRs and mirrorless cameras, and they’re significantly more affordable than comparable pro housings would be. This one even has enough space for zoom lenses like a 24-105mm to be used (though this extra space does make it fiddly if you want to use a shorter lens), and is compatible with enthusiast DSLRs like the Canon EOS 7D Mark II. While it has strategically placed holes to allow the user to operate the DSLR’s controls, some users have experienced trapped air in the bag making it hard to operate. Still, once you get used to its quirks, this is an impressive piece of kit.

Best budget underwater camera housing

If you’re using a smaller mirrorless setup, it’s worth seeking out a dedicated mirrorless housing, as this will make operation of the camera much easier once you’re underwater. The D-B from Ewa-marine, for instance, features a glove-like finger orifice that allows easy access to the controls of a mirrorless camera, making it that much easier to nail the shot even underwater. Autofocus and flash should still work well enough to be useable, and the bag is specifically designed so that the camera won’t be affected by the increased pressure of the water – this is why you want to make sure there is a little air inside the bag, as opposed to other similar housings where you generally want to expunge it.

Best underwater housing for GoPros

Extend the waterproofing of the flagship GoPro Hero12 Black from 10m to a whopping 60m with this dedicated housing. It also includes a “skeleton backdoor” which provides access to the touchscreen and improves audio capture, and according to GoPro, a camera with this housing equipped will still produce reliably sharp images above and below water. This is also compatible with the GoPro Hero 9, 10 and 11 Black.

Best underwater housing for older GoPros

If you plan on diving and are using a Hero 7 Black or older, your best bet is GoPro’s own Super Suit. Its included Waterproof Backdoors allow for diving down to up to 60m (196ft), and it has a flat glass lens to deliver maximum sharpness. The case also serves as protection against dust and flying debris. The Waterproof Doors can be swapped out for Skeleton Doors to allow for use of the touchscreen, though this will make the case no longer waterproof.

No longer sold by GoPro, the Super Suit is still available second-hand on eBay and other selling sites – though of course, you won't get any manufacturers' guarantees when buying from a private seller. Use at your own risk.

Best pro cases for deep diving

Finally, we come to the housings designed to take pro-spec cameras into deeper waters. These are serious housings for serious cameras, and as such they command serious prices. But if you’re looking for the best and can accept no substitute, these are definitely the housings to pick, with full access to camera controls and a sophisticated build that ensures images and videos are beautifully sharp.

Best deep-water housing for DSLRs

Another housing from Ewa-marine, the U-AXP is designed specifically for pro-spec DSLRs like the Canon EOS-1D X Mark III or the Nikon D6, and will carry them safely down to depths of 50m. If you want to dive more easily, it’s also possible to attach an optional BF1 lead weight, which any diver will tell you can make the descent much smoother. Controls are easily accessible, and the lens window is made from high-grade mineral glass to ensure top-notch quality. It’s designed for use with relatively short lenses with a filter diameter of less than 72mm – if you use larger lenses than this, it’s worth considering the Ewa-marine U-AXP100 (see at Amazon).

Best professional underwater camera housing

Ikelite’s housings are probably the best deep-water camera protection out there right now. The 200DL can be purchased for the Canon EOS 5D series, the OM System OM-1 II, the Fujifilm X-T5 or practically any number of other mirrorless and DSLR cameras you’d care to name, past and present. When you're choosing an underwater housing for your smartphone or camera, the first issue you're going to run into is going to be compatibility – simply put, does your camera fit in the housing? As you can see on this list, some housings are designed to work fairly generically with a few different models of phone or camera, while others are built around one specific model, and will not be suitable for use with any others.

This will likely also affect another key factor to consider when choosing housings – how much camera control they offer. A housing that is designed to fit just one type of camera can be made with that camera's control scheme in mind, and can thereby allow you to operate the buttons while diving. This can be hugely useful if you want to vary your settings; with more generic (or cheaper) housings that don't offer this depth of control, you'll have to put more faith in the camera's auto modes.

Some housings also offer accessory ports, allowing you to attach handles for a secure grip, or space for additional accessories like a flashgun. The latter can be especially useful for underwater photography, where light is in short supply – though you may need to buy additional parts to ensure it works (Ikelite, for instance, sells hotshoe TTL converters to allow for the use of strobes with its housings).

How we test underwater camera housings

We test all photo and video accessories by using them as the manufacturer intends – so for underwater housings, we set them up with a compatible camera and give them a dunking! Our review budgets don't always allow for a trip to a tropical ocean (unfortunately), so we take housings to more local waters to see how they perform when fully submerged. Where possible, we test housings to their rated depths, and we assess the quality of images we are able to capture in these circumstances. After all, there's no point taking your phone or camera underwater if the resultant images are too compromised to be of any use.

The best hard case for cameras

Best lightweight hard case

The Peli (aka Pelican) Air range has been designed to be 40% lighter than a regular Peli hard case of the same size. Consequently, the Air 1535 weighs just 3.95kg, though that’s just for the plastic shell. Load it with foam or a divider insert, and the weight difference between this and the equivalently sized Peli Protector 1510 hard case is more marginal.

As for toughness, I did my best to burst the Air, but while it does flex slightly more under pressure than the Protector 1510, the difference is reassuringly small.

The default interior option is cubed foam. You can also spec a Velcro divider insert; however, I went for Peli’s innovative TrekPak system. This uses sheets of corrugated plastic sandwiched between layers of dense, closed-cell foam. There’s a bespoke cutter included, so you can slice each sheet into strips to fit around the gear you want to carry, and the joins are secured by special hooped pins. It’s a very nicely engineered padding system that’s more elegant than basic Velcro dividers, but it's a bit less soft and cossetting than the default foam setup.

Best budget hard case

The Supreme 40F hard case will keep your kit dry down to five meters underwater. But with its cubed foam interior, you have to wonder how the case could possibly sink so deep in the first place.

Its 43 x 29.5 x 17.5cm interior dimensions give enough space for a full-frame DSLR and three or four lenses, but don’t expect to carry glass larger than a 70-200mm f/2.8. This translates to a very convenient 46.5 x 36.5 x 19.5cm outer size and modest 4.4kg weight - and that's with a full, untouched foam interior. This hexagonally-diced foam is included in the price, but Vanguard also sells a self-contained, removable divider bag for added versatility at an additional cost.

Despite its very competitive price tag, the Supreme 40F sports nice extras like a comfy handle and non-slip rubber feet on the base. Robustness is top-notch, too, with the Supreme being every bit as tough as cases from companies like Peli. Not only is it crush-proof to 120kg of force, the Supreme 40F will also withstand temperatures from -40ºC up to a toasty 95ºC.

Best hard case for interior options

Peli (short for Pelican) cases are the industry standard for camera hard cases. The Protector 1510 is one of the most popular cases in Peli’s huge range that includes a vast selection of different size options. At 56 x 35 x 23cm, the 1510 is designed to comply with most cabin baggage size requirements. Its 51.4 x 29 x 19cm bare interior will be a few centimeters smaller when lined with foam, but it's enough to store a typical camera kit as long as you don't plan to carry any fast super-tele optics. At 6.3kg with full foam, it's a little heavier than some equivalently sized hard cases, but its well-protected roller wheels will lighten that load most of the time.

Perhaps the best bit about Peli’s Protector range is that you don’t have to settle for boring black plastic. The Protector 1510 can also be had in silver, tan, orange, pink, and bright yellow. It means you’ll have no trouble spotting your gear on the airport baggage carousel if it ever has to travel in hold luggage!

Best extra-large hard case

The list mainly includes hard cases that can be carried as hand luggage for maximum versatility and portability, but hard cases are designed to be almost indestructible, giving them a fighting chance against your average baggage handler.

Vanguard’s Supreme 53D will have to go in the hold as it's 63 x 52 x 24cm on the outside, but that gives you a capacious 56 x 45 x 20cm interior – large enough to carry a serious amount of gear. You also get wheels, which are a real must as the case weighs over 10kg empty.

The D in 53D signifies this case carries a removable padded divider insert, rather than the 53F, which contains cubed foam. The 53D is a little more expensive than the 53F, and is the smarter buy if you need to reconfigure your interior to carry varied kit requirements. The divider insert is highly customizable, but annoyingly it doesn’t quite fill the whole case.

Despite its large size, the 53D feels every bit as invincible as the smaller cases here, with its lid held shut by no fewer than six latches. It’s also rated to withstand 120kg of crushing and is waterproof to a 5m depth.

Best hard case for carry-on

The Reloader Tough-55 comes in two size variants. Both have a 55 x 35cm length and width, but where this HighLid version has a 22.5cm depth, the LowLid option is 20cm, ensuring you meet even the strictest airline carry-on size requirements.

You get smooth rolling wheels on both, yet at 4.6kg, the HighLid is relatively light if you need to carry it. The Manfrotto's lightness is helped by an interior that uses a removable padded liner and Velcro dividers, rather than heavy cubed foam. It’s very effective. Internal dimensions are quoted as 50 x 26 x 17cm for this HighLid variant, which seems small, but this takes into account the thickness of the padded liner, where most case manufacturers quote an unrealistic internal size with the case completely bare.

The lid is secured by two-stage latches for added security, and I like the included harness that enables you to strap a tripod on the front. I'm less keen on the needlessly stiff release catch for the otherwise-robust extending handle, and the case flexes slightly more than the competition when crushed, but not worryingly so.

Best roller bag-style hard case

The Tenba Roadie Air Case Roller 21 offers the protection of a hard case with the appearance of a standard roller. Its Air Case layered protection features a rock-solid, virtually uncrushable internal structure concealed beneath a hard-wearing fabric exterior, allowing the case to withstand a load of up to 180kg, providing reassurance when checking the bag into an aircraft's hold. However, its robust build contributes to a heavy empty weight of 4.7 kg.

It's capable of storing two or three pro-level mirrorless cameras or DSLRs with grips, along with up to eight lenses, including one as large as a 400mm f/2.8. Internal organization is handled by a comprehensive system of adjustable, padded dividers, as well as clear plastic zippered pockets in the lid for cables and memory cards. A side zippered pocket can accommodate a small tripod, and a removable rain cover is included. It does lack a dedicated sleeve or compartment for a laptop or tablet, though.

Ultimately, the case offers exceptional protection and build quality, but it's hugely weighty and you'll need to carry your computing devices separately.

What to look for when buying a hard case

1. Wheels: Most practically-sized hard cases weigh upwards of 4kg, even without gear. If you’ll be travelling far from your car, go for a rolling hard case and your back will thank you.
   
2. Customization cushioning: The padding of choice for most hard cases is a simple block of foam, perforated into small cubes. Gradually extract these to form holes that’ll perfectly fit each item of your kit.
   
3. Interior options: Hollowed-out foam is great if you only intend to carry the same items every time. For a more versatile, reconfigurable interior, choose a hard case that can be specced with movable padded dividers instead.
   
4. Little extras: Hard cases are all about keeping your kit safe and secure. Padlock points are a must, while lid latches that release in two stages will help guard against accidental opening.
   
5. Pressure equalization: Water-tight cases are also air-tight. To avoid pressurisation issues like deformation when changing altitude, an airtight case should always incorporate a pressure equalization valve.

OM Digital Solutions has announced the two most weatherproof camera lenses in the industry: the OM System M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro II and OM System M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4 Pro, both rated at IP53.

Where the standard zoom is mostly a known quantity, by virtue of its identical optical formula, the OM System M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4 Pro is an entirely new proposition. 

Featuring "the same fundamental structure" as the Olympus M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro lens, this new f/4 version shrinks the 160mm and 760g bulk of its big brother into a hilariously small 99.4mm (124mm when in use, un-retracted) and 382g frame – you can see the old and new lens side-by-side in the gallery above. That means an 80-300mm equivalent lens that you can stuff in a pocket!

It features 15 elements in 9 groups (2 of which are aspherical), an inner zoom system (once the lens has been deployed) that suppresses center-of-gravity fluctuations while zooming, a close focus distance of 0.7m across the range, and a maximum magnification of 0.41x at the long end.

Both lenses will be available at the beginning of March, with the OM System M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro II carrying a price tag of $999.99 / £899.99 (approximately AU$1,402.28) and the OM System M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4 Pro retailing for $899.99 / £799.99 (AU$1,262.05).

Some great photos can be taken in bad weather, but how do you keep your gear safe? Most cameras can take a splash or two, but there are two things you must always avoid; driving rain and seawater. Cue the Peak Design Shell Cover, an attempt at creating a waterproof jacket for DSLR and mirrorless cameras and, crucially, any long lenses you might want to attach to them.

Why can’t you just use a plastic bag? You can, but try not to. Although it’s sometimes a good idea to have a plastic bag nearby to quickly stow a camera during a downpour, they can tear easily and become useless. Worse, the wind can take them and deposit them in the sea/river/stuck to the branches of a tree. That’s why plastic covers are banned in some locations, such as on expedition cruise ships in Antarctica.

Can the Peak Design Shell Cover improve over a plastic bag without being just another over-engineered accessory you don’t need? We took it out with a variety of cameras and lenses to find out how it performs in the real world.

Key features

It’s designed to protect cameras and lenses from water, snow dust and slight knocks, but how can a cover cater for all kinds of cameras and lenses? It can’t, which is why the Peak Design Shell Cover comes in three sizes; small, medium and large.

The small is meant for mirrorless cameras, the medium size is primarily for crop-sensor DSLRs and the large is for full-frame and flagship pro-level DLRs. There’s some overlap. For example, the Sony A7 ii with the Sony 70-200 FE lens requires the medium size, as do full-frame DSLRs with lenses up to 24-70 mm) so use the sizing guide provided to help you decide, though the size of the lens you use is almost irrelevant, according to Peak Design. 

Prices start from $39.95/£29.95/AU$84, so it’s not a huge investment, though that’s obviously way more than a plastic bag.

Loosely L-shaped, the product itself is lightweight and, rather ingeniously, packs-up into a tiny mesh bag stitched to its own lining. There are two openings. The front opening sits around the lens, of course, and has a slight overhanging peak to keep the rain off. It’s tensioned using a cinch cord. At the back there’s a bigger opening that fits over the rear, but it’s designed to curl over the entire back of a camera and be tensioned, again with a cinch cord.

It works particularly well with Peak Design’s Capture Clip system, which keeps a camera easily accessible by securely attaching it to a backpack strap, belt or bag (it uses an Arca tripod-compatible plate that also works with the brand’s Peak Design Travel Tripod.) You can also feed through a camera strap on each side, thanks to a couple of flaps in the corners. 

Performance

The Peak Design Shell Camera Covers are made to be snug. The fabric used has quite a bit of stretch in it and fits over and around some surprisingly varied setups. We tried the large size with a Canon M6 Mk II mirrorless camera sporting a 400mm lens and it fitted well, as it did for a Canon EOS 6D full-frame DSLR fitted with the same lens. Used on that lens the Peak Design Shell Camera Cover had to be more or less stretched as far as it would go. It provided a snug though relaxed fit, though when used with smaller lenses you can just ruck it up a little.

Either way it’s not easy to manually extend or withdraw a zoom lens while the Peak Design Shell Cover is in place. Nor, sadly, is it easy to use your camera while it’s wearing this cover. It’s designed to protect your camera during downpours, not to make it easy to carry on shooting in the rain. You can lift-up the cover at the back to access the controls, but that defeats the object. Still, it works well as a lens cover, and if you’re using a long telephoto in wet conditions or while at sea where splashes are a possibility, that’s worth something.

When it does get soaked the fabric used is tough stuff, repelling most of it and drying-off quickly. It’s an impressively durable fabric and we like the way it packs-up into a small pouch for storing in a camera backpack during clear weather.

We weren’t too fussed about the slots for threading through a camera strap. Although threading a camera strap through the slots works well if you want to use a shoulder strap, it’s a bit of a faff to re-thread everything (unless, of course, you use quick-release Peak Design Anchor Links).

Verdict

Easy to use, durable and with some nice design flourishes the Peak Design Shell Cover adds peace of mind during downpours, but it doesn’t help much if you want to carry on taking photographs in the rain. That said, it works well as a lens cover and protector in drizzle. In the dry and when traveling.

UPDATE: The Kodak-Trump loan scandal continues, as the attorney general of New York is suing the company and its executive chairman for insider trading over the $765 million loan received from the Trump administration last year. 

In July 2020, Kodak received the enormous grant from the United States government in order to produce domestic drugs to combat the coronavirus outbreak. Subsequently, its share price rocketed almost 3,000%.

However, the company's CEO and executive chairman Jim Continenza purchased 47,000 immediately preceding the deal – leading to an investigation by the US International Development Finance Corporation last year, which initially halted the loan, and now the new insider trading lawsuit. 

"In a statement provided to Reuters, Kodak said Continenza did not possess material nonpublic information when he purchased his shares and 'did not engage in insider trading'," reports Reuters.

While the Kodak declined to make him available for comment, it did add that, "Continenza has also regularly purchased stock during internally approved time windows, which included the June 2020 trades, and has never sold his shares".

UPDATE (09 Dec 2020): Following an investigation by the US International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), no wrongdoing has been found with regard to Kodak's receipt of a $765 million grant from the US government.

Awarded in July 2020, Kodak was awarded the loan in order to produce domestic generic drugs to fight the coronavirus pandemic (rather than leaning on imported foreign treatments), leading to a near 3,000% jump in stock price. 

However, the grant was halted after it was discovered that Kodak's CEO and executive chairman, Jim Continenza, received stock options just a day prior to the announcement being made.

According to The Wall Street Journal, though, the DFC found no evidence of wrongdoing on Kodak's part, which should allow for the grant to proceed as planned. Consequently, the company's stock price jumped by a more modest but still impressive 80% following the news.

ORIGINAL STORY (30 Jul 2020): Earlier this week Kodak secured a $765M loan from the US government in order to pivot to producing ingredients for generic drugs used to fight coronavirus. Ever since the announcement was made on Tuesday, Kodak's share price has risen exponentially, giving the company the biggest boost it's received in the past couple of decades.

This sudden change in Kodak's fortunes won't only please the company executives – anyone with the foresight to invest in Kodak before this announcement will have seen their stock rise by over 2,000%. On Monday night, Kodak stock closed at $2.62, but after the announcement it hit an impressive peak of $60.00.

Jim Continenza, Executive Chairman of Kodak, said, "Kodak is proud to be a part of strengthening America's self-sufficiency in producing the key pharmaceutical ingredients we need to keep our citizens safe."

Out of all of the film photography-related companies, Kodak arguably suffered the most when the digital camera revolution hit. Just eight years ago, Kodak filed for bankruptcy protection and began to sell off assets in order to stay afloat. One of Kodak's main strategies over the past few years seems to have been to license out its name to outside companies. This has lead to the Kodak name splashed across a variety of ventures, including iPhone accessories, 3D printers and even Bitcoin (yes, really). 

This $765M loan from the US government could be exactly what Kodak has been needing to turn the company around and make it profitable. However, only time will tell if Kodak is able to permanently change its fortunes with this much-needed injection of cash.

From the Canon EOS R5 and Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM to the Sony A7R IV and Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 AF DG DN Art, and the Nikon D750 to the GoPro Hero 9 to the DJI Mavic Air 2, now you can customize virtually every bit of your camera kit. 

Camskns uses 3M's "world class" vinyl wraps to ensure protection against everyday use, and says that there's zero residue when removing the skin if you need to take it off later down the line.

Apparently they're also easy to apply, and should take roughly 30 minutes or more depending on your dexterity. Though we'd wager that the skin application requires considerable patience and attention to detail, as each skin is comprised of multiple sections to ensure perfect coverage.

Founder and CEO of Camskns, Colin Dougherty, explains the thought process behind his colorful camera skins, stating that every photographer / videographer has a personality, so he thought it would be amazing to give their camera one as well. Does your camera need a waterproof shell? So often made from tough and unwieldy ballistic nylon, holster-style camera cases can often be clumsy and difficult to pack for a long trip. Cue this versatile and highly packable protective sleeve from ultralight adventure travel gear brand Matador.

While mostly focused on collapsible backpacks, pocket blankets and keychain towels, Matador has here produced a second iteration of its super-lightweight Camera Base Layer that’s designed to protect a camera from weather without adding to your load. 

Lightweight and highly packable, it’s the kind of accessory you can happily throw into a case when going on a trip without too much debate. Which isn’t something you can say for most camera holsters. 

Key features

The Camera Base Layer’s cleverest feature by far is its built-in waterproof cover. In dry weather it can lie dormant in the very depths of the case – it’s so small you’ll never notice it – but should there be a downpour it’s a cinch to drag it upwards. Cue ‘waterproof mode’, whereby your camera is enveloped in a double-waterproof layer that’s sized to cover your camera’s body. 

It’s also able to adapt its size according to what lens is being used. While wearing a prime lens it can stay as a diminutive camera – and with plenty of protective padding at the bottom – but unleash the drawstring and it bulges to fit around longer lenses, albeit with less padding. 

Quality and usability

Weighing 155g/5.5oz and measuring 28x22.9x2cm/11x9x0.8 inches when empty, the Camera Base Layer is designed for compact DSLR and mirrorless cameras. So if you’ve got a full-frame DSLR – or a telephoto lens, for that matter – this holster isn’t going to work for you. 

It has the feeling of a light outdoor jacket made for the trails. Its 40D soft-shell exterior is waterproofed, with 420D nylon panels positioned in hard-wearing areas around the top and back. 

Inside is 50D ripstop drybag liner to keep your camera from getting scratched with just enough padding to help prevent damaging knocks. 

There’s a rolltop-style lid to the Camera Base Layer that uses a magnetic Fidlock latch, though it’s not possible to adjust its tightness. That’s handled further down by a drawstring that helps customise it to suit whatever length of lens your camera is wearing. There’s also a built-in waterproof cover that extends upwards. On the back is a reasonable quality carabiner to attach to a belt or bag, as well as a small accessory pocket. 

In use, the Camera Base Layer offers just enough peace of mind that the camera inside is being protected from bumps and scratches, though it’s mostly about weather-proofing. 

We adored its built-in waterproof cover. It works well in use and we never felt our camera was in danger during rainstorms. There are even a couple of clasps for securing your camera’s neck strap, which help make the whole thing watertight. 

However, we did slightly miss having a dedicated shoulder strap with padding, which most holster-style cases include. Matador is presuming you’ll use your camera’s neck strap and then when using your camera just clip the empty Camera Base Layer to your clothes/jacket/backpack. For ultralight travellers that all makes perfect sense, but it would be nice to have the option to attach a shoulder strap. 

Although this is not a case for anyone wanting to travel with a tripod or any significant stash of accessories, it is possible to shove a lens cover, some memory cards, a spare battery or a cleaning cloth (all essential for outdoor photography!) into the rear’s small zipped pocket. In fact, it’s just about possible to squeeze in all of those things. 

Verdict

Perfect for anyone after some weatherproofing for a compact DSLR or mirrorless camera, Matador’s clever Camera Base Layer is well constructed and offers plenty of options. It’s not going to help in high-impact scenarios – only bad weather – and it won’t fit full-frame DSLRs or telephoto lenses. Capable of adjusting to various smaller lens sizes and with an effective waterproof mode, the lightweight Camera Base Layer will appeal mostly to travel and outdoor photographers looking to cut down on gear without having to sacrifice on weather-proofing.

Sony is being sued on behalf "all citizens of New York who purchased the A7 III" due to a consistent shutter failure issue that breaks the camera, according to a class action lawsuit.

The suit claims that the shutter on the Sony A7 III often fails between 10,000 and 50,000 actuations, falling far below the stated life expectancy of 200,000 actuations. The suit further alleges that the failure often occurs outside the 1-year warranty period, forcing consumers to pay $500-$650 for repairs.

Plaintiff John Guerriero filed the suit against Sony Electronics Inc. with the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, on 26 March 2021, with the class consisting of all New Yorkers who purchased the Sony A7 III (hat tip to DIY Photography, by way of Photo Rumors).

The suit "seeks class-wide injunctive relief based on Rule 23(b) in addition to a monetary relief class."

The specifics of the complaint can be found below, but in short the shutter blades are described as coming detached – apparently because they catch on the camera chassis during the picture-taking process, because they are positioned too far forward. The limited strength and durability of the shutter has also been highlighted.

The suit alleges that Sony has been aware of the issue since 2017, and cites the Change.org petition We want Sony A7III to be recalled for Shutter replacement with over 1,200 signatures as evidence of the widespread nature of the problem. 

These kinds of court proceedings tend to move slowly, but it will be interesting to see how this one progresses…

II. The a7iii’s Shutter Problem

16. The shutter life expectancy on the a7iii is 200,000 actuations.

17. However, numerous users report shutter failures far below 200,000 but between 10,000 and 50,000 for most of the users who experienced this.5

18. While the a7iii is generally sold with a one-year warranty, shutter failure occurs randomly, often outside of the warranty period.

19. The result is that purchasers must pay approximately $500-$650 for repair and replacement of the shutter mechanism.

20. The shutter failure manifests in a consistent way.

21. Prior to shutter failure, users report hearing an atypical shutter sound, followed by the screen turning black and displaying the following message: “Camera Error. Turn off then on.”

22. However, following these instructions often will not solve the problem.

23. Users who experience the shutter failure have resorted to removing and reinserting the camera’s battery, but this is also ineffective.

24. When a user removes the lens, the shutter is closed and stuck.

25. In most instances, the shutter has become detached, as shown through the numerous a7iii users who shared pictures of their broken shutters on the internet.

26. Several explanations have been advanced for why the a7iii shutters fail relatively frequently and before the expected number of actuations.

27. These include the observation that the shutter blade catches on the front edge as it moves down in taking a picture.

28. This is because the blades are positioned farther forward, so they “catch” and fail to fully clear.

29. Moreover, the front curtain shutter material is of limited strength, causing it to break.

30. Additionally, the shutter is unusually susceptible to disruption by small particles, even dust, which can cause the blades out of alignment. from

31. Many users, out of caution, have resorted to using the camera with the electronic front curtain shutter (“EFCS”) off, which may decrease the chance of a shutter malfunction.

32. When the EFCS is on, it “shortens the time lag between shutter releases and helps reduce shutter noise when taking pictures.”6

33. However, the EFCS is one of the main reasons for purchasing the a7iii and having to refrain from using it diminishes the camera’s utility and value.

34. For users whose shutters do not fail completely, they nonetheless experience abnormal banding that is evident only when using the mechanical shutter.

35. The cause is the failure of the rear curtain to clear properly.

36. Though users and do-it-yourself repair enthusiasts have offered ways to unbind the shutter, these can cause damage to the shutter.

37. Additionally, the problem is likely to reoccur, and the user will have any warranty claim denied for having caused “physical damage” in attempting to fix the shutter failure.

38. In fact, Sony has denied warranty coverage to numerous a7iii users on these grounds. 39. Sony has also denied coverage to those who experienced shutter failure when their claims were submitted outside of the limited warranty period.

40. Sony has been aware of the shutter failure on the a7iii since shortly after its release

41. Sony is aware of the percentage of this model which experience premature shutter failure but has declined to act such as issuing a recall or covering the faulty shutters."

For any photographer or videographer seeking pro-grade protection for their equipment when in transit, Peli is the go-to brand, with its robust cases very much the top tier of what’s currently available. Having taken delivery of its 1535 Air rolling case, my first thought was ‘haven’t I seen this one before?’

Turns out the answer is yes. Sort of. Having recently looked at its 1510 rolling case for this site in an attractive shocking pink, sure to be the talking point at any airport carousel, its identically sized 1535 now arrives in a more sober silver/grey colour. Other shades are available, just not pink this time.

While the 1510 claims to be crushproof, providing peace of mind should we need to check it in, the 1535 is almost as tough as its sibling yet a good deal lighter in weight. When empty this one’s just under 4Kg, as opposed to its near twin’s 6.2Kg. It retains the same dimensions too, so we’ll be able to squeeze in a similarly significant amount of gear. Plus in undergoing my own unscientific tests, it does appear almost as robust, with very little give or flex to its solid-feel construction. Even when standing on it.

Luckily, should we be in any doubt as to whether it will stand up to as much rough treatment as its maker’s 1510 alternative, the 1535 model should meet the carry-on requirements for most airlines. And there are carry handles at the top and the side for hefting it into an overhead locker too, as well as an extendable trolley-style handle at the back and a pair of wheels at the base for pushing or pulling it across the tarmac.

So, is the 1535 a just-as-good option for anyone considering the heftier 1510 for kit protection, but who doesn’t want the added weight or to spend quite as much? Read on to find out…

Widely available at the time of writing, the VAT inclusive UK price as well as the US price given above is taken straight from Peli’s own website. And that’s for the case when empty. US buyers get a better deal, as the cost in sterling and dollars is pretty much the same. Bear in mind too that the price will vary depending on which optional insert you go for, with foam, soft Velcro-like dividers and its maker’s layered foam and plastic TrekPak choices all incrementally pushing up the cost. For example, the case with the top tier TrekPak divider option I found retailing for as much as $422.95 or £449, which makes the Peli 1535 Air seem much less like the budget option it at first seems in comparison with the 1510.

Pelican 1535 Air: Build

As indicated above, at a weight just shy of 4Kg when empty, Peli’s 1535 Air is close to rivals from Think Tank and Vanguard in terms of heft. Though for our money the Peli Air feels a tad tougher. It’s also more manageable than the Peli 1510, the latter, at 6.2Kg, being weightier than these already weighty examples.

In terms of removable innards for this particular case to provide a snug and safe fit for whatever photo gear we pack into it, there are several options. These include a choice of foam, which can be picked at and plucked to provide bespoke accommodation for our camera kit when in transit, or we can go for a toughened TrekPak divider option. This top-end alternative provides a bit more flexibility in terms of accommodating different configurations of gear, as it comes with a cutter tool and set of pins, as per the review sample I was sent. Alternatively, as I had with the 1510 option previously tested, my personal preference would be for the bright yellow divider set with Velcro-like rip-off and adjustable panels. Either way, these different interior materials can be lifted in and out of the hard plastic case as desired. So we could in theory choose one at the time of purchase and go for another down the line if preferences change.

As well as the industrial-looking silver/grey example showcased here, the Peli 1535 Air case is available in bog standard black, plus orange, yellow, white, an attractive sounding French Blue or a limited edition ‘Wrapped’ version at the time of writing. Practical clearly doesn’t have to mean perfunctory.

That said, practicality is delivered in spades, with protection not only provided via the rigidity of the case’s construction, but also via snap-shut locks activated with a button press for further security. There are also a couple of metal reinforced holes for threading through a couple of padlocks if I want to make doubly sure nobody can get into the 1535 when my attention’s elsewhere. And, to prove it’s mine if ever challenged, a business card holder is provided on the exterior.

Pelican 1535 Air: Performance

I was sent an example of the Peli 1525 Air with its maker’s TrekPak interior and various shaping tools, which pushes the overall weight to just under 5 kg, before I’ve loaded any equipment. This is as heavy a case as I want to be using, given that camera bodies can themselves weigh around 1 kg as we get towards the semi-pro/pro examples. I reckon I could fit a good three or four mirrorless or consumer DSLR grade bodies into the interior space available here and still have room for a further three or four lenses to go with them. There is plenty of room for a ‘main’ camera and backup, along with several lenses and a flashgun, which will suit professionals heading off on a job.

As with the Peli 1510 and competitors, there are different ways to transport the 1535 case, via side and top carry handles plus a wide, retractable trolley handle. To release this handle, we first must flex and gently bend a plastic flap that keeps it rigidly in place and then pull upwards. Without a button built into the handle to quickly release it, as common on regular consumer travel cases, I needed to bend down to release it. Also, with two wheels at the base rather than four, I cannot quickly spin the case through 360 degrees on the spot. I find that’s useful if changing direction quickly, as when hurrying to get to check-in or through flight security at the airport. Still, these are very minor gripes and the wheels certainly take some effort out of transporting what’s still a fairly heavy case.

Pelican 1535 Air: Verdict

The silver / grey exterior of our Peli 1535 Air case reinforces its industrial look and feel, suggesting this case means business rather than pleasure. While frill-free, it is at least practical, and in my opinion, is more comfortable to use than the heavier 1510 model, if you don’t need that extra degree of protection. Especially if you’re not going to be regularly checking it in and risking the airplane’s hold. Incidentally, in this respect, the built-in pressure gauge does provide an extra degree of peace of mind on those occasions where hold storage might be unavoidable. With the Peli 1535 Air Case, its maker continues to lead the pack when it comes to near-indestructible cases for protecting our precious kit when on the go.

Alternatives

As noted in the main body of the review, the closest alternative option to the Peli 1535 Air is the heavier-weight, more robust, and inevitably more expensive Peli / Pelican 1510 Protector Case. For us, it’s a bit off-putting that it weighs 6.2 kg, even if it does claim to be crushproof with it. Like the 1535, the 1510 starts off as an empty shell, as its most basic purchase option, which can then be personalised with the addition of foam or adjustable padding interior.

Coming with a foam interior as standard, and weighing 4.4 kg with it fitted, is a budget-friendly alternative in the Vanguard Supreme 40F. The only downside is its lack of wheels, which could be an issue if transporting heavy gear. Still, it can withstand being dunked in water to five metres in depth.

For those with much more gear to transport at once, there’s the bigger, more roomy option in the Vanguard Supreme 53D. Heavier as well as bigger, it’s a back-breaking 11.2 kg with a padded divider insert. A 53F model alternatively serves up a foam interior.

Halfway between a rolling bag and a hard case is the Tenba Roadie Air Case Roller 21, which less obviously resembles a camera case. This one ramps up the robustness for when we might be forced to check it in, rather than carry it on board as hand luggage. Read our standalone review of the Tenba for a more detailed comparison.

Now you can shoot underwater down to a depth of 10m (33ft) with the Hasselblad X1D II 50c, with this custom made waterproof housing from AquaTech. Developed jointly by the two companies, it allows Hasselblad’s medium format camera to go to places it’s never been before.

The AquaTech Reflex Water Housing is designed to be portable yet strong. It weighs 1.6kg (3.52lbs) and uses a combination of glass filled polycarbonate construction and controls made from stainless steel, anodised aluminium and high strength plastics. The aim is to offer easy control with protection against saltwater corrosion.

The new Reflex X1D II 50C means you can get medium-format Hasselblad image quality in underwater photography, and it’s been achieved while maintaining a good degree of camera control. There are two electronic shutter buttons to allow shooting in either the vertical or horizontal format, and you can activate the camera’s back buttons for menu navigation and other settings.

Design and features

The Reflex X1D II 50C has a hinged, sealed back for inserting the camera and is large enough to accommodate an X1D II 50c with any current XCD lens fitted. There are twin handles/grips for holding the case underwater. The case allows access to the following camera controls: Menu; AE Lock; AF Drive; Browse; Rectangle; Star; and Cross / Delete.

The case’s exterior dimensions are W 210mm x L 135mm x H 190mm.  In addition to the REFLEX Water Housing itself, you get the Back Plate with Controls, a Camera Plate for mounting X1D II ;a Cable Release for the Electronic Shutter and a Tool Kit.

We’d guess there aren’t many people reading this who’ve never lost a lens cap, or never struggled to find one when they needed it.

Well, it looks like Canon might just have solved this problem. It’s early days yet, but the eagle-eyed folks at Canon Watch have spotted a patent application by the firm for a lens cap that might just be impossible to lose

The patent number is 2019-113645, and it effectively works as a lens cap and a lens hood simultaneously, with its four sections opening and closing without the cap being removed from the lens.

A quote from the patent reads as follows:

“The present invention works as a lens hood function at the time of shooting and as a lens protection function at the time of non-shooting, thus eliminating the need for lens cap attachment / removal and barrier opening / closing operations.”

Interesting stuff! We’re definitely excited at the prospect of a lens cap that can’t fall off and disappear down the bottom of a bag, or get misplaced while shooting. This is only a patent application at this stage, so it isn’t clear when or even if this cap is going to go into production, however given the reaction from the community already, we’d say Canon likely has a winner on its hands here.

Canon isn’t the first manufacturer to try and solve the lens cap problem – the Kuvrd Universal Lens Cap is still going strong, a year and a half after its Kickstarter campaign. It would definitely be good, however, for a major manufacturer like Canon to start including a solution like this on its lenses as standard. We can dream, can’t we?

Photography in the rain is rarely much fun, and it's even more uncomfortable if your camera or lens isn't weather sealed. That's because the usual solution for keeping your kit dry is to to shroud it in a rain cover - or in other words, a glorified plastic bag with a hole in the end to let the front of your lens poke through. Sure, it'll keep the rain off your gear, but operating key functions and rotating lens rings becomes a slippery, fumbling chore, made worse if smaller buttons become obscured by droplets on the bag.

The Camera Canopy has been designed to both keep your camera and lens dry while also maintaining their easy usability. It's available direct from the Camera Canopy website for $79.99 + $9.99 shipping to US mainland addresses.

Features

As with many great inventions, the Camera Canopy is beautifully simple. A sheet of transparent 2mm-thick acrylic, bent downwards on either side to form a 'roof', attaches to your camera's hot shoe via a strong metal bracket. A secondary, movable acrylic panel can slide forward, extending the canopy's length to around 45cm in order to cover longer lenses (Camera Canopy's maker states lenses up to 500mm can be covered). Alternatively, this extra section can be removed entirely, creating a lighter 28cm-long cover suitable for shorter prime lenses.

All mounting hardware is included, as is a simple carry pouch that can be worn as a rudimentary backpack.

Performance

Attaching the Camera Canopy to your camera is child's play. A small spigot slots into the hotshoe and tightens like a conventional flashgun mount. The canopy's metal bracket then slots onto the spigot and a small wing nut clamps it in place. That's it! Near-instantaneous rain protection.

Compared to a traditional plastic bag rain cover, the Camera Canopy is a joy to use. There's plenty of room for your hands to get underneath to rotate zoom and focus rings, as well as operating your camera's shutter release and other buttons. There's no fiddling trying to line up cutouts in a bag around your viewfinder and the front of your lens, and your camera's main monitor is left completely unobstructed for easy viewing and touch-screen operation.

There are however a few issues. Firstly, at around 760g, the canopy is surprisingly heavy, and all that weight is hanging forward of the mounting point, applying quite a lot of leverage on your camera's hot shoe. We doubt this would cause any long-term damage in normal use, but it does mean it's very easy to knock the front of the canopy and accidentally move it from side to side. It also means you can't rotate your camera to portrait orientation for a quick vertical shot, as the canopy would inevitably pivot on the hotshoe and drop down.

More concerning is that while the design is well suited to protecting against straightforward vertical rain, if the wind gets up, it'll easily blow water in under the canopy. There's also no rear overhang (as this would prevent you resting your eye against the viewfinder), so there's very little rain protection for your camera's rear panel.

To be fair to Camera Canopy's designers, they are up front about these limitations on the product's website, but they're limitations nonetheless. Finally, the rigid bent plastic shape means you can't really slot it into a typical camera backpack, so the included cover is definitely required for transportation.

Verdict

We love a fresh take on solving an age-old photography problem, especially when it's been developed by a small team of Brooklyn-based enthusiasts and made in the US of A.

The Camera Canopy very much succeeds in its mission to make wet weather photography easier and more ergonomic, but in addressing these issues it causes other problems, namely with the product's sheer bulk and the quality of its weather protection.

The Camera Canopy makes sense as an extra layer of cover for an already weather-sealed camera and lens, and its extending front panel means it can offer decent protection to a non-sealed lens. But the lack of rear overhang means we wouldn't trust it to protect a non-weather-sealed camera body if there's any amount of wind.

This compromise is also problematic when you consider the $80 cost of the Camera Canopy compared to a bag-type product such as an Op/Tech Rainsleeve that can be had for under £10/$10 and affords better rain protection, albeit with typical ergonomic bugbears.

What's the difference between weatherproof and waterproof cameras?

When the rain starts pouring, the only option for outdoor photographers who don't have a weather-sealed camera is to stuff their kit into a glorified plastic bag – which may not even cover the lens. However, now there's a new and far more robust way to protect your gear: the Camera Canopy.

Manfrotto’s massive range of camera bags just got bigger with addition of these two new hard cases for cameras. They join the company’s Reloader range of bags designed to meet airline carry-on case sizes so you don’t have to check your valuable gear into the hold.

Where the existing Reloader bags are soft, the Tough H-55 (high hood) and L-55 (low hood) models are rigid cases secured by Manfrotto’s safe-release latch system, with protection from both water and dust.

Inside, there are customisable dividers which can be moved around at any time to accommodate different bits of kit or even removed completely. Both cases are made in Italy using heavy-duty “military standard” materials.

The Tough H-55 (high hood) model is the larger version and can accommodate a pro DSLR with a 400mm lens attached, plus a second DSLR and 3-4 additional lenses. It has an external front tripod attachment which uses metal pins.

The Tough H-55 and L-55 are both designed to meet international airline carry-on dimensions. The H-55 measures 55 x 35 x 22.5cm, and the L-55 and its ‘low hood’ design is slightly slimmer at 55 x 35 x 20cm.

Both cases have trolley wheels in the base and 2-stage retractable handles for those long walks through airport departure lounges and there are two carry handles, one on the top and one at the side – perfect for hefting the cases in and out of taxis
