It's a question that has been asked ever since Canon moved to mirrorless: should you use DSLR glass on your mirrorless camera, particularly when the DSLR versions are so much cheaper? A good case in point is the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs Canon EF 50mm f/1.8.

During Amazon's latest sale, for example, the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 has been slashed to just £89 in the UK. Meanwhile the mirrorless equivalent, the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8, is discounted to £165.

That's massive difference. And spoiler alert: at £89 the EF lens is so ridiculously well-priced that anybody who doesn't own a nifty fifty should definitely buy it. But what are the pros and cons of doing so?

Obviously the first thing to consider is whether or not you have a lens adapter. A cheap third-party one (which I wouldn't recommend) is as little as £35, while the official Canon adapter (which I own and use) is £119. Either way, if you have to buy one to save money on an EF lens, it's probably false economy.

That aside, what are the real talking points when it comes to the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs EF 50mm f/1.8?

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs EF 50mm f/1.8: What are the differences?

If you have the opportunity to try and compare the lenses for yourself, that's the best way to see what the differences really are.

Shy of that, I can tell you my personal experience as someone who owned and used the Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM (review here) for years on DSLRs, before upgrading to the R System and adapting it on mirrorless cameras.

Using it with Canon's Mount Adapter EF-EOS R, you get absolutely native performance when it comes to things like autofocus speed. I know that in years past, adapting lenses has been a bit of a minefield in terms of functionality – but with the official Canon adapter, the EF 50mm performs absolutely flawlessly on any EOS R camera.

Ultimately I upgraded to the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 STM (review here), mainly to achieve a smaller footprint. The mount adapter works brilliantly, but it adds an extra inch or so to the front of your camera. So that was my main reason for moving to the RF version of the lens.

In and of themselves, the lenses are about the same size – so neither one really takes up any more or less space in your camera bag. The RF lens is sleeker and prettier, while the EF feels a bit more plasticky, but otherwise there's no size saving either way.

In terms of pure image quality, I don't think anyone could tell the difference. I look back at shots in my portfolio and, without looking at the EXIF, even I can't tell them apart. The RF lens is sharper across the frame while pixel peeping, but it's not a profound difference.

Optically, both the EF and RF versions render similar results – the f/1.8 designs are built for economy, not performance (for that, you'll need to look to the f/1.4 and f/1.2 models). But unless you're zooming into all your shots at 200%, you won't notice much difference.

When it comes to focusing speed, here there is a difference. Both lenses feature stepper motors (the "STM" in the name), but the EF version is slower and noisier.

Factor in that the EF mount only has eight electronic contact points, compared to the twelve on the RF mount, and the mirrorless version communicates faster and keeps up better when it comes to movement and subject tracking.

However, I don't think anyone is really using these lenses for fast action or sports – so the speed difference will be minor or even unnoticable to most people.

In truth, the only real difference in practice is that the RF lens has a customizable control ring on the nose. This can be toggled via a switch to act as a manual focus ring or to adjust exposure values such as ISO. It's not something I really use on any of my RF lenses, but it might be a consideration for some.

By contrast, the switch on the EF lens toggles between auto and manual focus; to do this on the RF version, you need to go into menus and make the change in-camera. So if you're someone who likes to snap into manual for fine focusing, this might also be a deal maker / breaker.

Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 vs EF 50mm f/1.8: Which should you buy?

As noted, I upgraded from the EF version to the RF version specifically to reduce the size (by removing the adapter from the equation). Yes the lens is slightly sharper and a fair bit snappier to focus, but in real-world use neither of those have been a factor.

Truth be told, if I was buying a nifty fifty today and looking at £89 for the EF lens and £165 for the RF, I would buy the DSLR version in a heartbeat. The price saving outweighs the performance benefits.

On top of that, the RF lens only works on my mirrorless cameras but the EF one works on my DSLRs as well. So in that sense, the EF is a much more versatile option.

If you want a really noticeable performance boost on your mirrorless camera, you're looking at the Canon RF 50mm f/1.4L VCM (or even the Canon RF 50mm f/1.2L USM). Pound for pound, though, I suggest saving some cash and getting yourself the EF lens.

There was a lot of noise about the Panasonic Lumix S9 when it launched – and not all of it was positive.

From the complaints that it was a bigger version of the compact Lumix camera we really wanted (sound familiar?), to laments over its lack of EVF and hot shoe, to criticism of it trying to be a Fujifilm X100 VI, to blowback over the lens it launched with… the noise was hard to ignore.

And my colleagues and I were definitely part of that noise.

"Sorry, Panasonic, I don't want the S9 – I want the camera you made 11 years ago" I wrote, lamenting that it wasn't the Lumix GM1.

"The Lumix S9 hit all the right marks – until you attached a lens, said Gareth, our Reviews Editor, regarding the poorly-received 26mm launch lens. "Honestly, I didn't enjoy using the camera because of it."

Most damning of all was DCW contributor Rod Lawton, who wrote, "I saw Panasonic's Lumix S9 for the first time at a show and I just kept walking. That’s bad!"

Well, fast-forward two years from its launch, and Gareth and I both have a Lumix S9 – along with a lot of young creators who absolutely love it.

(The Lumix S9 is currently enjoying massive discounts in the Amazon Prime Day sale, particularly with the 18-40mm kit which has hit its lowest ever price in the US as well as its lowest price since January in the UK.)

So what turned us around? Well, for starters, there was plenty to love about the S9 from day one that had already won us over.

The body is absolutely tiny for a full-frame camera. Being about the same size as an X100 VI, it offered the most compact full-frame offering on the market.

Its 24.2MP sensor delivers brilliant stills at up to 30fps (though it's limited to 8fps with continuous autofocus) as well as 6K 30p open gate video.

Best of all, you can employ Realtime LUTs for both photo and video – which is essentially Fujifilm's Film Simulations on steroids, fully customizable and enabling you to perform your exact editing style and post-production looks in-camera at the point of capture.

The Crop Zoom and Hybrid Zoom functions were always big winners, too, enabling you to extend the focal range of your prime and zoom lenses by seamlessly adding a scaling digital zoom. With Hybrid Zoom on the Lumix 20-60mm lens, for example, keep turning the zoom ring and it becomes a 20-187mm!

As far as what changed, well, I have to take my hat off to Panasonic because significant improvements were made right from the off.

Firmware version 1.1 unlocked the much-maligned recording limits, which previously restricted filming to 10 mins in 6K, 15 mins in 4K and 20 minutes in FullHD. Of course, the camera is still limited by temperature build-up, as it lacks an active cooling system, but disposing of the artificial limits was incredibly welcome.

We also got the ability to display multiple frame markers when shooting open gate, which is a godsend for framing shots for multiple outputs.

The autofocus also got a serious improvement, including the addition of two new subject detection algorithms, and we received multiple quality of life improvements to everything from the startup speed to deeper integration with smartphone apps like Lumix Lab.

Perhaps most importantly, we now have lenses that actually suit the S9's size. I've often said that compact full-frame cameras are an act of folly, because there aren't enough compact lenses to go with them – and the S9 was deathly guilty of this for. However, the L-Mount Alliance stepped up.

Panasonic gave us both the Lumix S 18-40mm zoom and the Lumix S 40mm f/2 prime, amazingly both the same size. Then TTArtisan dropped a 40mm f/2 of its own, but my favorite is the Viltrox AF 28mm pancake – which is the lens that the Lumix 26mm wishes it was.

Honestly, if any of these lenses were available at launch, I think the reception to the S9 would have been completely different.

Of course, some of our core complaints remain. Until Panasonic (or a third party) releases an external EVF add-on, the lack of viewfinder still hurts. And the omission of both a hot shoe and a mechanical shutter means that flash photographers are still SOL.

But as a true hybrid camera aimed at creators on the go, the Lumix S9 has finally become the camera that Gareth and I both hoped it would be when we first saw it. It's not often that cynical journalists admit they were wrong or put their money where their mouth is, but as S9 owners we're both very happy to have seen the light!

Do you have a small mirrorless camera and wish that it had a super-slim lens so it can actually fit into your pocket? Then you need this lens!

Small mirrorless cameras are pretty rare these days, but they do exist – like the Fujifilm X-M5 and Olympus PEN E-P7, and even the Sony A6700 and Sony A7C II. The problem is, while the bodies themselves are small, as soon as you put a lens on them they stop being pocketable.

The solution, of course, is to buy a pancake lens – but it's always been hard to make a universal recommendation, because most lenses are mount-specific.

However, I bought this brilliant lens that's made in multiple mounts: the 7Artisans 18mm f/6.3 II is available for Sony E, Fujifilm X, Nikon Z and Micro Four Thirds cameras.

This lens is so supremely thin, at just 8mm, that it adds virtually nothing to the depth of your camera body. In fact, it's so thin that my Olympus PEN Mini with this lens is the same size as my favorite compact camera, the Olympus Stylus SH-3!

Unlike a lot of ultra-thin lenses, the 7Artisans 18mm f/6.3 II actually has a useful focal length and usable aperture. On an APS-C camera it becomes an effective 27mm lens, while on a Micro Four Thirds camera it's a 36mm equivalent – both of which are great for street, travel, documentary and reportage photography.

The construction is all-metal, and it's very solid and well-made, though you're obviously not getting weather sealing at this price. As you'd expect, it's a manual focus affair – but the fixed f/6.3 aperture means that depth of field is pretty generous, making snap / zone focusing a breeze.

Image quality isn't going to win any awards, but it's very usable and you can get some great street and travel shots – again, the priority here is having something pocketable for snap shooting those decisive moments, rather than something clinical for pixel-peeping.

And of course, it also serves as a useful body cap lens – so your camera is always ready to snap that spontaneous shot, even when all your kit is sitting on the camera shelf.

This is one of the most fun lenses I've ever bought – it's immensely fun to shoot with and it's so bloody nice to have a mirrorless camera that genuinely slips into my pocket!

There's a great Prime Day Camera deal on one of my favorite lenses: the OM System M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 R is now just $144!

It's smaller than a soda can, as you can see in the image at the top of this page, meaning there's always room in my camera bag for me to squeeze it in. Or I can just slip it into my pocket!

The premium M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/2.8 Pro lens offers tippy top image quality, but it also has a tippy top price tag and it's much bigger.

With this lens, I have an equivalent 80-300mm with me wherever I go – and it's enabled me to get some great spontaneous shots that I otherwise would have missed, because who carries an 80-300mm everywhere they go? With this one, you can!

One of the best value lenses out there, I originally bought the M.Zuiko 40-150mm f/4.0-5.6 R on a whim because I wanted a long lens on a wildlife-friendly holiday – but it's consistently been one that I go back to and keep getting great results with!

I mainly use it to snap animals on walks, but I've also used it for portraiture – and honestly, it punches so far above its weight that I could conceivably shoot 75% of my photography on this one lens.

Sure, 64GB might not seem like much in an era of 8K video and high-resolution sensors, but for everyday photography, it’s plenty - and at this price, they’re practically impossible to resist.

It’s become something of a ritual for me now. I ignore memory cards for most of the year and wait until Prime Day - or the days leading up to it - when prices start to tumble, and full-price suddenly looks ridiculous. The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 already has a history of going viral thanks to its portable form factor and tripod-free steady video. But now an Amazon Prime Day deal has been so popular that the major retailer has already sold out. Thankfully, a handful of other retailers still have stock available at the lowest-ever price.

The DJI Osmo Pocket 3 is an unusual camera in that it’s a camera that’s built right into a gimbal. That's part of why the camera went viral. The gimbal not only creates smooth video but also allows the camera to track your movement, perfect for vlogging and recording action.

The other reason that the Pocket 3 has been so successful? The camera uses a larger one-inch sensor, so the video and photo quality are excellent for the price.

The camera’s popularity drove up the price to as high as $799, thanks to a mix of trends and tariffs. But now with Prime Day plus DJI’s recent launch of the Pocket 4, the price has dropped to a record low.

The Osmo Pocket 3’s $378 deal has been so popular that Amazon has sold out, and the listing now warns of a “high price” thanks to surging demand. But, I’ve found that several US retailers still have that $378 price with the camera in stock.

B&H Photo Video has matched Amazon’s earlier price at $378, plus it adds a free one-year extended warranty and, as of this writing, has the camera in stock and ready to ship.

Photo retailer Adorama has the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 in stock and ready to go with free two-day shipping.

Electronics giant Best Buy also has the Pocket 3 listed as in stock at the discounted price.

Another option? The Creator Combo includes a wireless mic with the camera and has dropped down to $512.

DJI has recently launched the Pocket 4, but the camera can be more challenging to find in the US – not to mention more expensive. Of all the Prime Day deals that I’ve been following, the Pocket 3 discount is the most tempting to me personally – partially because it’s the lowest ever price and partially because I’d love the ability to auto-track when creating social media videos.

I’m guilty of spending a lot of my time (and money) on microphones and video-editing software, without taking the quality of my headphones seriously. The steepest camera discounts are often on older models. But the best deals on Nikon cameras that I’ve seen so far during Prime Day aren’t on older cameras but on three of the imaging giant’s best mirrorless cameras.

The Nikon Z6 III, Z5 II, and Z8 have all dropped to the lowest price yet, according to Amazon price trackers. Those three cameras are among our most-recommended Nikon full-frame cameras, covering the span from beginner to serious professionals.

Nikon Z6 III: The best Nikon for most

The Z6 III is the Nikon that I would pick for myself – and the model that leads the list of the best Nikon cameras. The 24.5MP full-frame sensor captures excellent detail, yet offers an excellent balance between resolution, low-light performance, and speed.

But the real reason that I’m drawn to the Z6 III is for the low-light autofocus. The Nikon Z6 III has class-leading low-light autofocus performance, which is rated down to an impressive -10EV. That’s also paired with impressive 20fps burst speeds, 6K60 video, and fantastic ergonomics with a comfortable grip, a flip screen, and a highly detailed viewfinder.

Nikon Z5 II: The best budget full-frame Nikon

The Z6 III’s impressive low-light autofocus and 24.5MP resolution surprisingly trickles down to Nikon’s most affordable full-frame camera, the Z5 II. Image quality and autofocus are going to be consistent between the two cameras.

What makes the Z5 II more affordable is that it’s not as fast because it doesn’t have the same partially stacked sensor design as the Z6 III. That drops down the burst speed to 11 fps mechanical and 15 fps electronic burst speed, so it’s not as good for sports and action.

The other genre that may want to spend more for the Z6 III instead is video, as the Z5 II tops out at 4K60p and crops the sensor in video mode as well.

The Nikon Z8: The best Nikon for pros (and action)

While the Z6 III is more than capable of pro portraits, for pros demanding the most speed and resolution, the Nikon Z8 is the way to go. The Nikon Z8 has the resolution and speed of the flagship Z9 but is packed into a smaller and more affordable body.

That gives the camera a 45.7MP full-frame sensor with 120fps bursts and a 493-point autofocus system that has ten different kinds of subject recognition. Complaints are minimal – the battery life could be better, and some competitors have even smarter autofocus systems. But for action and high resolution, both, the Z8 is an excellent camera.

Buying your first "proper" camera is an absolute minefield. Which brand should you buy? Which lens should you get? What kind of memory card do you need? And then comes the cost, as you quickly discover that cameras aren't as cheap as you thought they were.

I used to teach photography, so I've been recommending "first cameras" for years. And if you're looking for the best beginner camera for you or someone else, I think the Canon EOS R100 is the best place to start – especially bundled with its kit lens, the Canon RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM.

I'm going explain what all that means, why it matters and why it's the camera you should start your photographic journey with.

Is the Canon EOS R100 a good starter camera?

The first thing that makes the R100 perfect for newcomers to photography is the price: this is the only camera on the market with a truly entry-level price tag.

I know that $499 might not seem "entry level", but in the context of cameras – which typically cost thousands and thousands just for the body – trust me, $499 for a camera and lens is an absolute steal.

It achieves this price point by omitting everything but the essentials for learning photography. So there's no touch control, the rear screen doesn't tilt or articulate, and the 4K video has some compromises.

But as a pure photographic device, for learning how to use a camera and take great pictures, it's brilliant.

It has a high-resolution, 2.36 million-dot electronic viewfinder, which is the best way to learn how to "see" and compose your shots. It also reflects your camera settings in real time, so you can see what happens as you adjust the dials, making it a fantastic way to learn things like the exposure triangle.

It has a powerful 24.1MP APS-C image sensor, much bigger than the one in your phone, able to render crisp detail and beautifully shallow depth of field (aka blurry backgrounds). It also offers a burst rate of 6fps (frames per second), enabling you to fire off continuous frames when shooting moving subjects.

The menus are guided, too, helping you understand how these features work and how to achieve creative effects.

And the camera is also extremely compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry with you everywhere – whether you hang it off your neck or shoulder with the camera strap, or throw it in a bag or your glove compartment.

However, the biggest appeal of the R100 is that it gets you into the world of interchangeable lenses. You know that feeling when you use your phone to take a picture and you can't get close enough, or you can't get enough of the scene into your frame? Being able to change camera lenses liberates you from this problem.

Is the Canon RF-S 18-45mm a good starter lens?

The Canon EOS R100 often comes in a kit, or a bundle, with the Canon RF-S 18-45mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM lens – which is why it is described as a "kit lens". What do all those letters and numbers mean?

'RF-S' is the lens mount employed by the R100. It means that the camera can mount any of Canon's RF lenses, but the 'S' denotes that the R100 has an APS-C image sensor (you can find out more in our What is sensor size? article). Because APS-C sensors are smaller than full-frame sensors, you have to apply a crop factor of 1.6x to the focal length of a given lens.

So in this case you multiply 18-45mm by 1.6x, which gives you an "equivalent" zoom range of 28.8-72mm. That's an incredibly versatile range that's perfect for everyday shooting, street and travel photography, and even some light landscape (at the "wider" 28.8mm end) and portrait (at the "longer" 72mm end) shots.

The 'f/4.5-6.3' refers to the lens' aperture range (how "wide" the aperture blades open, which dictates how much light reaches your sensor and how shallow your depth of field is). This isn't the "fastest" lens in the world (the lower the f-number, the "faster" a lens is) but it's perfect for starting your journey, with excellent center sharpness throughout the range.

Finally, the 'IS' stands for 'image stabilization' (meaning this lens offers shake compensation for handheld shots) while 'STM' refers to Canon's precision 'stepper motor' that delivers smooth, near-silent autofocus.

Does the Canon EOS R100 have good image quality?

Some people will tell you that beginner cameras are only good for beginners, but these shots illustrate the kind of image quality that the R100 is capable of. Yes, there are "better" cameras and more powerful image sensors out there – but I've taken shots on this sensor for portfolio and even paid client work, and never had any issues or complaints.

The Canon EOS R100 gives a newcomer everything they need to start mastering photography, but in professional hands it can deliver sensational shots.

The next model up, the Canon EOS R50, offers some very welcome improvements (not least an articulating touchscreen and full-fat 4K) but they come at a higher price tag – and I don't think a burgeoning photographer needs them.

So if you're considering which camera to get, for this price I simply don't think there's a better beginner camera and lens combo than the Canon EOS R100.

I've dragged this camera through multiple countries, traveled with it, explored bustling cities, and even captured sharp action shots at the Isle of Man TT – and if you know anything about these motorbike riders, you know they're insanely fast.

How to choose

There are a few things to consider when shopping for a memory card. First and foremost is the type of card. The SD format is the most widely adopted standard, and these are further split into SDHC (High Capacity) and SDXC (eXtended Capacity) variants. All my picks are SDXC cards, which enable greater capacity than the other variants.

Then there are microSD cards, which are much smaller and commonly used in physically smaller devices, such as drones and action cameras.

CFexpress is the format adopted by pro-level equipment - most use Type B cards, but Sony mirrorless cameras use Type A cards. The best CFexpress cards offer blistering read/write speeds, but this performance comes at a price – though not too steep a price, thanks to the deals I've selected!

Capacity is the next consideration. Simply put, the greater a card's capacity, the more images (or video) it can store. However, it's not always best to go for the highest possible capacity; many photographers prefer to split their images over several cards for safety. There's often a sweet spot of capacity and price, and the deals I've picked reflect this.

Next comes performance, which measures a card's read and write speeds. The former determines how quickly you can download images from the card to the computer, but the latter is more important as it dictates how fast data is written to the card and thus affects the burst rate of your camera when shooting a rapid sequence of stills or the resolution and frame rate of the video it is capable or recording. If a card can't keep up with the camera, it will grind to a halt as it struggles to write data to the card.

Last but not least is the brand. All cards are great until they fail, and while no card is completely fail-safe, investing in a trusted manufacturer of memory cards offers a greater guarantee of reliability. All the brands that make my list are tried and trusted brands.

Out of the box, it can use AI tracking to follow you and orbit you, or it can be piloted using a phone – but you can add radio remote control for long-distance flying, or even FPV goggles and a 'wand' controller (also heavily discounted for Prime) to fly it as if you're a pilot sat inside. A lot of capability in a very small, very safe design, even before you acknowledge the pleasing price.

This Mini 3 is a great choice for photographers, and this upgraded control option means you don't need to go rummaging around and connect your phone to the remote with a cable.

What makes this drone very useful for a lot of people is that it's the cheapest drone in which the gimbal (the piece that holds and steadies the camera) can rotate the camera to a vertical position.

That makes it the cheapest drone that offers true portrait mode shooting. Given this is the correct way around for TikTok, Instagram video and YouTube Shorts – and so much other social media – it's easy to see why this would have appeal.

Starting with the aim of shooting photo and video on a drone? The camera on this drone is more than capable. Why such a big discount here? I think it is so big because outside the USA a slightly newer model has come out (it's called Lito) but you can't get it here and it looks more or less the same anyway, so there is a lot to be said for the "Why spend more?" argument if you want 4K video.

The Antigravity A1 is not the cheapest drone, so a price drop is welcome, but the 360-degree camera is extremely impressive and is doubly excellent thanks to the inclusion of Insta360's post-processing software, which is the best in the business in my view. I reviewed this drone and I not only enjoyed flying it, but I found it a breeze to go back after flying and turn the recording into varied and engaging edits from the comfort of my laptop.

These descriptions are usually just a sentence. It is invariably an American-sounding sentence, even for me, based in the UK. I was told "A person is walking on the sidewalk with a tumbler'. We call the sidewalk the 'pavement' here in Britain. How very quaint!

However, the AI description feature is useful, especially as it connects to phone and watch alerts, so I've been trying it.

It also, on occasion, gets the descriptions wrong. I noticed it happened especially on the camera by my front door, which has to identify action outside the house – perhaps because it tends to happen faster and be more varied?

Confused, I asked Google, 'can a stroller be called a tumbler in American English?' to be informed that, as I thought, a tumbler 'primarily refers to a drinking glass with a flat bottom and no handle or stem' - and that the only alternative noun referred to either a lock or a type of domestic pigeon. The person did not have a pigeon on their head, domestic or not. Indeed, I would imagine this could be an impediment to safely pushing a baby carriage.

Weirdly, further down it did say 'a person is walking on the sidewalk with a baby stroller' but the clip was of a bored-looking man trudging past looking at his phone! So perhaps the captions were out of sync?

They were also a bit stilted-sounding. Instead of saying 'a person is walking up the stairs', the description said 'a person is ascending the steps in the house'. Not technically incorrect, but unnecessarily formal. I don't have enough friends, so want to feel that the robot is my friend!

The pièce de résistance when it came to hilarity took place when my gorgeous husband and I were in bed, erm, doing what newlyweds do. The AI was incredibly coy about this! The bluntest it got was 'Two people are kissing on the bed.' Needless to say, we were doing a LOT more than that! It also amused me that, during the action, it described us as 'A person moving near another person on the bed'. Near?! Pretty much as near as you can get...

I do wonder if, at some stage, the AI will move from saying 'a person' to identifying the person's gender, but I guess this could be a minefield. 'A person' is probably safest. It would also be interesting to know if it could estimate the age of a person, but I guess this is all much further down the line.

Ring Pro costs £15.99 a month or £159.99 a year. I currently have Ring Multi, the lower-priced tier for more than one device, which only costs half as much.

The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro – sometimes sold for MORE than the recommended price – has finally seen a discount. Amazon Prime day has brought a handy 15% off the RRP of this GoPro-beating 4K Action Camera. Personally, I'd rush out and pick one up (if I didn't already have one of these cameras in my house!)

Sure, this is no longer the newest model, which is probably why it is finally on sale for less than the asking price, but for a long time the relatively large imaging sensor (1/1.3-inch) set it apart from the others – even now it's a feature everyone is trying to copy.

That makes it good for underwater and caving, or indoors, or evenings – basically anything with imperfect light, while it's still well-built and great with HDR for water, snow, and sand, so you're not missing out!

The Action 5 Pro also introduced a pressure sensor – that records metadata to your video, and so records your altitude or depth. (It can also link wirelessly to a GPS device – like a phone or watch – to record your location data to the video too).

We see a lot of competition for action cameras, but with the Action 6 being the only new model DJI brought out since this (and GoPro having decided to create a new, more expensive tier called 'Mission'), this still makes sense for most people – especially at a discount.

When I wrote my full review, I gave the Action 5 Pro 4.5 of 5 stars and my main complaint was honestly that it looked a bit boring! You might say that is a plus point. It won't distract!

Plus it is robust and reliable, the 4K video is excellent (and you can have slow-mo up to 960fps). It's a lot cheaper than your phone, too, so you can feel a lot safer about throwing this thing around while still getting pretty stunning footage!

In general, I love an action camera, and DJI's quality is at the top of the tree (as our best action camera guide tends to reveal). I sometimes lament the lack of built-in GPS, but that is something you can solve with a phone link if you really want to add location & speed metadata at all.

Retro camera design is firmly back in fashion, and one model in particular keeps popping up everywhere – now dropping to $30.59 in the Amazon Big Spring Sale.

The Chuzhao is a tiny, characterful camera styled to mimic classic twin-lens reflex designs, a nostalgic look that’s helped push it into Amazon’s bestseller ranks.

This isn’t a retro camera in the same vein as something like the Fujifilm X100VI. Instead, the Chuzhao leans fully into lo-fi charm, built around a modest 12-megapixel 1/4-inch sensor that gives images a distinctly imperfect, almost toy-camera aesthetic.

In truth, it’s the design doing most of the heavy lifting here. While there’s only a single functional lens, the camera convincingly channels the look of a classic twin-lens reflex, complete with a waist-level viewfinder that adds to its nostalgic appeal.

The Chuzhao is much, much smaller than the real TLR cameras, too, measuring just 3.5 inches tall. But that, coupled with the retro design, is probably why so many reviewers use phrases like “the cutest camera” to describe it. Reviews are mixed, though, with some praising the cute design and retro viewfinder and others saying, unfairly, that it “has the build quality of a McDonalds toy.” Our own review is underway – but our early verdict is that this is an impressive camera when you take the price into acount

As the name suggests, a bridge camera bridges the gap between simple point-and-shoot compacts and advanced interchangeable-lens models. It offers DSLR-like handling and manual controls, but features a single, non-removable superzoom lens.

These shooters are solid choices for beginner and budget photographers, and one of the newest bridge cameras on the market, and which Amazon has just slashed the price of by 24% is the Panasonic LUMIX FZ80D.

I was surprised to find out that the Lumix FZ80D was only released in 2024, considering bridge cameras have long been seen as a dead camera type. However, Panasonic clearly believed there’s still value in this camera, and I’d have to agree.

The main benefit is, of course, the ridiculous 60x zoom lens that’s packed into a body that’s the same size as a standard DSLR. With a wide-angle view of 20mm and a super telephoto view of 1,200mm, this rig suits all kinds of photography, from landscape and portraiture right through to sports and wildlife.

With an interchangeable-lens camera, you’d need at least three separate lenses to cover all of these bases, which could easily set you back more than $400 each, which is what the Lumix FZ80D is currently on offer for in Amazon’s Prime Day deals.

For more serious photographers, the attractive price may not be enough. Truth be told, the image quality produced by the FZ80D isn’t on par with what more modern mirrorless APS-C and full-frame cameras boast – after all, this camera does only have an 18MP 1/2.3-inch sensor.

However, you can’t deny that the 20-1,200mm zoom is great bang for your buck, despite it potentially producing grainier images. If you are looking for more than 18MP of resolution, then be sure to check out our guide to the best cheap cameras.

We're keeping track of the best Amazon Prime Day camera deals so you don’t have to!

The Fujifilm X Half launched as a delightful entry into Fujifilm’s coveted X-Series line-up, with a quirky digital ‘half-frame’ design. And although I was charmed by this unusual compact camera, I never felt its entry-level attributes quite aligned with its RRP.

That’s why this Prime Day camera deal has caught my attention. A cool 35% off the RRP has plummeted the X Half to a much more palatable £429 at Amazon UK, the lowest price you’ve been able to buy it, outright. All three colors are available, too, Charcoal, Black and Silver. However, all variants are currently selling fast...

The charming compact camera is designed to deliver a film-like experience without the cost and hassle of buying and developing your own film. And while a digital half-frame camera might seem superfluous, given that film cost-saving measures aren’t an issue when shooting digital, the X Half’s vertically-mounted 1-inch sensor is designed to appeal to the social media crowd.

But perhaps the X Half’s most attractive feature is the fact that it’s a proper little Fujifilm camera with the brand’s famed Film Simulations. The camera received four stars in the Digital Camera World review, praising its pocketable size, classic rangefinder styling, and brilliantly designed screens/controls layout.

It’s a shame it’s missing settings for making film recipes and isn’t capable of shooting RAW. But my biggest bugbear has always been the price. With an RRP of £699, I’d be minded to consider the Fujifilm X-T30 III or find a good Fujifilm X-T30 II used deal. But at £429, the X Half is a fantastic deal.

The Panasonic Lumix S9 with the compact 18-40mm S lens is one of the most tempting full-frame camera bundles appearing in the Amazon Prime sale, and at just $1332.99 I can see that this lightweight setup is perfectly suited to travel, street photography, and everyday content creation.

What makes the Lumix S9 so appealing is how much camera Panasonic has managed to fit into such a small and stylish body. It features a 24.2MP full-frame sensor, excellent in-body image stabilization, and the same dependable phase-detection autofocus technology found in Panasonic’s larger hybrid cameras.

The included 18-40mm S lens completes the package beautifully. It is compact enough to keep the entire setup easy to carry, while its useful wide-angle zoom range makes it ideal for landscapes, city breaks, environmental portraits, vlogging, and capturing everyday life.

Video is another area where the Lumix S9 really stands out. Panasonic has packed it with powerful recording tools, including high-resolution open-gate video and the ability to apply custom color looks directly in-camera, making it particularly attractive to filmmakers, social media creators, and anyone who wants polished footage without a lengthy editing process.

Despite its approachable design, this is still a serious full-frame camera capable of producing excellent stills and video. Its lightweight construction makes it easy to carry throughout the day, while the full-frame sensor provides the detail, dynamic range, and low-light performance that photographers expect from a much larger system.

I'd never recommend a budget compact camera to a serious photographer who already knows they're all in, regardless of their experience. But when it comes to people who are curious about the craft but not sure if they want to drop at least a few hundred bucks on gear, then these models are ideal.

One compact camera in particular that surprised me recently with its simplicity but also how enjoyable it was to use is the Kodak Pixpro FZ55. This nifty point-and-shoot has to be one of the easiest digital cameras to use ever produced and, for the affordable price, the image quality isn't too shabby. And, even better, the FZ55 is now on sale for just $139.99.

If you're just dabbling with photography, then you'll love that the FZ55 has minimal settings to navigate. You can let the camera do all the work in auto mode and it's quite literally two clicks to switch to manual mode, which I recommend. In fact, it took me no longer than 10 minutes to figure out the Pixpro FZ55 setting without having to read the manual.

A particular feature I like is the panorama mode – which was unexpected in a camera so cheap – and all images are captured at a respectable 16MP of resolution thanks to the CMOS sensor.

Of course, there are things about the Pixpro FZ55 that I wasn't the biggest fan of, the main one being the somewhat unreliable histogram. If you don't know what a histogram is, it's the graph on the camera LCD that shows how bright your image is.

Compared to more expensive cameras, this Pixpro feature wasn't the best, resulting in some over-exposed images. However, I was testing the camera from the standpoint of a serious photographer and it's not a major issue if you're wetting your toes.

So, if you're in the market for a more serious setup, then you should gravitate towards an APS-C camera or a mirrorless, or even a DSLR. But if you're not sure if photography is for you, and want to figure this out with a cheap, simple model, then the Pixpro FZ55 is a solid option.

I've been flying drones – and sharing secrets about them – ever since the early days, so you can rest assured that I know all the best models out there. This Prime Day I've been checking out the deals on offer and I can confidently say that, while they're available, these are definitely the best.

What makes this drone coast a little more is that the gimbal (the piece that holds and steadies the camera) features the option to rotate the camera to a vertical position – this being the cheapest drone that offers true portrait mode shooting. Given this is the correct way around for TikTok, Instagram video and YouTube Shorts – and so much other social media – it's easy to see why this would have appeal.

Starting our with the aim of shooting photo and video on a drone? The camera on this drone is more than capable. Why such a big discount here? I think it is so big because of the arrival of the new, but similar-looking Lito series in the UK, but there is a lot to be said for the "Why spend more?" argument if you want 4K video.

The Antigravity A1 is not the cheapest drone, so a price drop is welcome, but the 360-degree camera is extremely impressive and is doubly excellent thanks to the inclusion of Insta360's post-processing software, which is the best in the business in my view. I reviewed this drone and I not only enjoyed flying it, but I found it a breeze to go back after flying and turn the recording into varied and engaging edits from the comfort of my laptop.
