The 50 best photography and camera accessories in 2018

9. SanDisk Extreme PRO 64 GB SDXC UHS-I Memory Card

As hardy as it is speedy, with protection against the elements joining fast transfer speeds

Read speed: Up to 95 MB/s | Write speed: Up to 90 MB/s | Video speed: C10, U3, V30

Very fast
Protection against water, shock, temperature and x-rays
Not the cheapest 64GB card

There’s nothing more frustrating than slow memory cards that leave you hanging or missing shots, but there's little chance of this happening with the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC. Fast read and write speeds for dealing with images, together with UHS Class 3 and V30 for video recording, make it a winner. Better still, the card is water and shockproof and comes with a lifetime warranty.

10. PNY Performance Class 10 SDHC 32 GB

Good value card for everyday stills photography

Read speed: Up to 80 MB/s | Write speed: Up to 40 MB/s | Video speed: C10, U3

32GB capacity ideal for stills
Excellent value
Not designed for 4K video

Memory cards can get VERY expensive, very quickly, so you need to make sure you’re not buying performance you don’t need. So if you’re primarily a stills photographer, 32GB capacity is probably fine, even if you shoot raw files, and you’ll only need a bigger or faster card if you start getting serious about video – or you shoot very high volumes of sports shots in burst mode.

11. Lexar Professional 2000x SDHC/SDXC UHS-II 128GB

It’s pricey, but this Lexar SD card is big and very, very fast

Read speed: Up to 300 MB/s | Write speed: Up to 260 MB/s | Video speed: U3, V90

Big capacity
Ultra-fast speeds for pro video
Expensive

These cards are expensive, but what you’re buying is not just sheer storage capacity but high-speed data storage and the ability to capture high-resolution video. This is a UHS-II card, so it has an extra row of contacts on the back to boost the transfer speeds (make sure your camera has a UHS-II compatible card slot, though).

12. Deyard K020 Memory Card Case

This water-resistant, shockproof case will leave you with change from a tenner

Capacity: 12 SD/SDHC/SDXC cards and 12 MicroSD cards

Lots of protection
Great for travelling
12 card slots may be overkill for some photographers

There’s no point shooting great images if you aren’t going to protect your memory cards. The bargain Deyard K020 memory card case protects up to 12 SD-type cards from water, dust and shock, and has a silicone inner design to securely hold everything inside. Very cleverly, each space even has an additional chamber for Micro SD cards.

13. Western Digital My Passport 4TB

One of the most popular external hard drives around – and for good reason

Capacities: 1TB, 2TB and 4TB | Interface: USB 3.0 / USB 2.0 compatible | Password protection: Yes | Warranty: 3 years

Fast data transfer with USB 3.0 port
Large storage capacity
Not quite the cheapest of its kind for lower-capacity units

Western Digital's My Passport line has evolved over the years. The Western Digital My Passport 4TB is the latest iteration and boasts a USB 3.0 port for speedy data transfer, together with password protection and a design like no other. Right now you can grab the 4TB option for a great price, but 2TB and 1TB alternatives also exist.

14. Transcend 2TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive

Military-grade shockproofing makes this perfect for securing images on the move

Capacities: 1TB, 2TB and 4TB capacities

Great shockproofing (and no impact on speeds)
Design won't suit everyone

The Transcend 2TB USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive came out on top in the Storage Solutions category of the recent Digital Camera Awards. We loved the fact that it was small for a rugged drive, yet without any compromise on data transfer speeds. Perfect for those on the move – as well as those with curious youngsters.
