Kippon, manufacturer of adapters that enabled just about any lens to be used on just about any camera, has just announced the world's first adapter that will mount Canon EF lenses to the Nikon Z6 and Nikon Z7 – complete with autofocus.
Previously a somewhat pejorative term referring to the two dominant camera brands, 'CaNikon' is the name Kippon has given its latest adapter. It will attach any Canon EF or EF-S, Sigma EF or Tamron EF lens to Nikon's full-frame mirrorless Z-mount bodies.
There are already adapters in the wild that enable you to mount Canon lenses to Nikons and vice-versa, but this is the first time that autofocus capabilities will remain operational; until now, adapted lenses were manual focus only.
In fact, with the advent of mirrorless cameras and their shorter lens flange distances, the whole lens adapter market has really taken off. If you own a full frame Sony Alpha, for example, you can track down adaptors for practically every lens mount ever made. You are usually restricted to manual focus, but this has become a whole lot easier with mirrorless cameras, live views and focus zoom features.
As has been pointed out by the photographic community, it will be interesting to see how Nikon reacts to its name being appropriated for this product. We won't have to wait long to find out, as the CaNikon will be officially unveiled at the CP+ show in Japan on 28 February.
