The iPhone 17 is currently the cheapest of this latest generation of iPhones, at least until the iPhone 17e comes along. Not that you can really call an $800 / £800 / AU$1,400 smartphone 'cheap'; it's still a significant investment, and the first thing you'll want to do after taking it out of its box is put it straight into a protective case.

Apple, of course, makes its own range of cases, but they are on the pricey side and, dare I say it, a little bit boring. But there are plenty of third-party options available, too, which tend to be a little more adventurous in their design.

Here's my pick of cases that I've personally tried and tested. These are all for the 'standard' iPhone 17, but most are available in variants to fit the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Best luxury iPhone 17 case

Nothing screams luxury like leather, and the Mujjo Full Leather Case is crafted from full-grain vegetable-tanned leather that not only promises to age beautifully, but the DriTan tanning process saves water and reduces chemicals. I opted for a classic Tan leather color, but the iPhone 17 case is also available in Black and Basalt Blue, while models higher up the range get more options.

The case really is a delight to hold and behold. It has that wonderful leather smell, and the buttons are made from machined metal, rather than plastic, to add to the top-quality feel. On the inside, a microfiber lining keeps your phone protected.

The case is part of a wider Mujjo ecosystem, which includes a leather wallet-cum-kickstand that snapped to the phone case via MagSafe and can support the phone in vertical and horizontal aspects for watching media, there's a matching AirPods case, and a keyfob with an Apple Airtag compartment to end the problem of mislaying your keys. While I think the case itself is an affordable luxury – it's typically around the same price as Apple's no-frills silicone case – adding all the accessories does mount up.

The ESR Cloud Soft Magnetic Case has a soft-touch liquid silicone exterior that feels nice and grippy in the hand, yet maintains strong durability with a claimed 3x military-grade drop protection from up to 11 feet.

MagSafe compatibility is present and correct, and ESR says it is enhanced with a powerful 1,400g magnetic force for a secure and reliable hold on stands and chargers. It comes in five translucent colors that match and enhance the shades of your phone, and the iPhone's camera bump is surrounded by a sturdy metal lip for added protection.

Its party trick is that this lip is hinged to form a neat flip-out kickstand that props the phone up in horizontal orientation, and is just the job for watching movies, YouTube, or hands-free FaceTime calls.

Best iPhone 17 case for grip

A step up from the Smartish GripMunk case, the Gripzilla has more deeply contoured finger grooves and textured sides designed to help you grip the case firmly in hand. But should the worst happen, and you allow the phone to slip from your grip, this case offers an even greater level of protection, with raised corner bumpers and built-in air pockets to better absorb shocks from drops.

Unlike the GripMunk, the Camera Control is covered with a conductive strip, rather than being open, which still enables you to use the camera functionality. It's fully MagSafe compatible and comes in a range of bold and beautiful designs.

The enhanced protection does add a little bulk to the size and shape of the case, but it feels very well guarded. If you're accident-prone, this is the case for you!

Best slim iPhone 17 case

While your shiny new iPhone 17 demands protection from the rigors that daily life can throw at it, it can seem a shame to hide that sleek form factor with an overly bulky case. The Pitaka Ultra Slim Case aims to remedy that, with an incredibly thin and light construction; it's just 1mm thick and is a featherweight 20 grams.

It's crafted from aerospace-grade aramid fiber, a high-tech woven material that Pitaka says is five times stronger than steel, while being much, much lighter. It really, truly adds no noticeable size to the phone, and has a lovely, elegant textured feel. It's MagSafe compatible too.

A PitaTap Camera Control cover transfers full functionality to the Camera Control button it sits over, while preserving the sleek lines of the case, although none of the physical buttons are protected, but have cutouts instead. The Ultra Slim comes in a couple of attractive finishes: Moonrise has cool blue tones, while Sunrise has an orangey-red finish. For more sober types, there's a plain black version.

Best clear iPhone 17 case

You spend ages deliberating on which color of iPhone to buy, only to hide it away in a case. But it doesn't have to be this way. The Mous Clarity case is transparent to enable the full beauty of your shiny new iPhone 17 to shine through. And, as it has been constructed from PCTG co-polyester with UV-resistant technology to resist yellowing, the case should look as good a few years down the line as the day you bought it.

There are a lot of cheap and nasty clear cases on the market that offer little in the way of grip or protection, but that's certainly not the case with this case. While the main body is clear, it is built around an aluminum frame and has an opaque textured surface for improved grip. This frame hides an AiroShock protection system that is built into the edges of the case and is focused on the corners to protect against drop damage, and there's a reinforced ring around the camera bump. In addition to the clear case, Mous also has Limitless cases with patterned backs and even an Intralock case for active types that clips into mounts in a similar way to the Quad Lock case, all with AiroShock protection.

The case comes with black or stone colored edges, and this color option is mirrored in the MagSafe ring. There is a further clear option, but this doesn't have MagSafe, and there's so little price difference, I'd go for the colored options any day of the week. I think the Stone variant, in particular, looks really smart and really does offer the best of both worlds of a see-through case that is grippy and protective.

Best iPhone 17 case for sports

The Quad Lock iPhone 17 case is fairly nondescript-looking at first; it only comes in black, but has a nice rubberized feel with a chunky surround that should give you confidence should you accidentally drop the phone.

Not that that's likely, for around the back, in the middle of the MagSafe-compatible ring, is a recessed indent that forms the Quad Lock mechanism. This securely attaches the phone to all manner of mounts. There's a running armband, bike handlebar mounts, in-car kits, and a whole lot else. You simply slot the case onto the mount at a 45º angle and give it a twist, whereby it locks firmly in place until released by pressing a latch on the mount.

It's really rock solid and offers a much safer support than the strongest of magnets could ever muster; I trust it entirely when going out for a run, and it has the bonus that the front face of the phone is unobscured, so the touchscreen works, which I've found isn't the case with typical running straps. There is one problem, though; I found the Camera Control cover to be overly sensitive, opening the camera at the slightest touch, and then behaving erratically. However, Quad Lock has acknowledged this issue and is sending out replacements free of charge, so if you like to keep active, this is still your best bet.

Best iPhone 17 case for carrying cards

Many of us use our iPhones to pay for everything these days, but it's wise to carry a traditional credit card for emergencies, not to mention other everyday fantastic plastic, such as a driver's license, key passes, and so on. The Wallet Slayer Vol. 1 can stash up to four cards in a slot at the rear, which are held firmly in place with a spring mechanism, but can be easily slid out via a thumb recess.

The front of the phone and rear camera are well-protected by raised bumpers, and air pockets provide additional protection against drops and impacts. The phone's Camera Control is exposed but deeply recessed to enable direct operation.

Mine came in a stylish 'Walnut Wood' finish, one of six available designs. It certainly adds less bulk than folding wallet-style cases, but the ability to stash cards in the slot around the back means this case forgoes MagSafe functionality.

Best budget iPhone 17 case

The GripMunk with MagSafe is Smartish's most basic iPhone 17 case (aside from the GripMunk without MagSafe), but there's little price difference between them, and I'd go for the version that is compatible with magnetic chargers every day of the week.

There may be cheaper cases than the GripMunk, but probably not at this level of quality. It is available in a wide range of colors, both opaque and translucent, with bold and striking designs that not only look great, but also provide great value.

Despite the low asking price, the case edges are gently contoured with finger-shaped indents for grip, and the case offers plenty of protection; Smartish says that it has 'drop-tested 50 times from a six-foot height'. I can't claim to have tried this myself with my own iPhone!

Best Apple-branded iPhone 17 case

For some, only an Apple-branded case will do. The iPhone 17 Silicone Case with MagSafe is available in a range of colors, including Neon Yellow, Anchor Blue, Purple Fog, Light Moss, and Black, designed to perfectly complement the iPhone 17's five available hues.

The big advantage Apple has is that its own-brand cases have been properly tried and tested prior to each iPhone's launch, whereas its third-party competitors rely on leaked specs to get their cases to market on day one. For the most part, they get it right, but there have been issues – which you can read about in my think-piece here – but with Apple stuff, you just know it's going to work.

The cases are made with 45% recycled silicone material and have a soft-touch finish that is comfortable in the hand and provides decent grip, although they are not contoured. Inside, a microfiber lining that ensures your phone remains scratch-free. There's a magnetic ring for MagSafe compatibility, and the phone's Camera Control cover adds protection and functions seamlessly. However, as you might expect from an Apple product, it's on the pricey side, and the competition tends to have more interesting designs at a more competitive price.

How to choose the best iPhone 17 case

I've tested these cases on the 'standard' iPhone 17, but there are variants for the Air, Pro and Pro Max too, so make sure you pick the correct one for your model of iPhone. While the iPhone 17's dimensions are broadly the same as the iPhone 17 Pro, the camera bump is much less obtrusive, neatly restricted to a small area around the pair of rear lenses, rather than taking the entire width of the rear of the phone.

And while the iPhone 17 looks very similar to the iPhone 16 that came before it, the dimensions are slightly different. You may just be able to squeeze your 17 into a 16 case, but the buttons and camera module won't line up properly and won't offer the optimum level of protection.

And a good level of protection should be your top priority. All the cases in this guide are from reputable manufacturers that claim to have proven the integrity of their products with drop and impact tests. I really would steer clear of cheap unbranded cases.

For many, MagSafe compatibility is a must; so many cases have a built-in magnetic ring that enhances the attachment properties of the phone to chargers and stands, while ensuring inductive charging remains efficient. Ensure your chosen case supports this feature if you plan to use MagSafe chargers or accessories.

It's been a long time since I've been excited by the possibilities offered by a new camera phone. Because let's face it, whether you're using the cheapest or most expensive smartphone on the market, you're ultimately still going to be shooting the same scenes. Which is why, when I first head about the Google's Pixel 10 promise of 100x zoom, I was genuinely thrilled. Could this open up a whole new class of things to photograph?

Living on the south-west coast of England in Weston-super-Mare, I'm blessed with a daily coastal walk that not only surrounds me with natural beauty, but also offers many photographic opportunities. I'll be honest, though, after 20 odd years of making the same walk, I do occasionally feel a bit jaded. 

Yes, the variable British weather keeps things interesting: the same scene shot in sweltering sunshine can look like another world under a blanket of snow and ice. But most of the time, I'll still end up focusing on the same things. The pier. The mudflats at low tide. The occasional donkey looking a little Eeyore-like as it tramps across the beach, wide-eyed five-year-old on its back. 

In my mind, then, the 100x zoom on the Pixel 10 Pro and 10 Pro XL sounded like game-changer. Suddenly, that cargo ship on the horizon wouldn't be just a distant speck; it'd become detailed maritime architecture. Those hazy suggestions of Welsh hills across the Bristol Channel could become genuine subjects. Those world-class surfing kites, high in the sky, might suddenly become lens-accessible.

It all sounded, in short, a bit like a superpower: giving you the ability to collapse distance and bring the far-off world into close-up focus.

But turns out, there's a bit of catch.

Opening up new worlds

On closer inspection, the Pixel 10's 100x zoom isn't quite what you think; it's substantially enhanced by AI. This isn't simple digital zoom where pixels are stretched until they scream. Google's algorithms are actively inventing details, using generative AI to fill gaps the lens cannot capture.

Which creates somewhat of a philosophical quandry. Would I be really be creating a photograph? Or would it be more like a digital painting: one where somebody else is holding the brush? Would I have captured a distant ship, or just asked for Google's best guess at what a ship should look like?

Admittedly, so far reviews suggest this AI enhancement works remarkably well. Text becomes legible, animal fur gains texture, architectural details emerge from the mush. It's all technically impressive, undeniably useful… and completely unsettling if you care about authenticity.

Yes, photography has always involved technical intervention. But that has traditionally involved enhancing existing visual information, not conjuring it up from scratch via algorithms. Ones that, lest we forget, have a tendency to hallucinate mad things, from made up facts to hands with six fingers. 

Yet despite these concerns, I'm still  excited. Ultimately, even if these pictures end up being weird or terrible, at least that'll be interesting in its own way. 

So I'm giving Google points for trying something genuinely new with the Pixel 10. And whether or not the company's algorithmic optimism matches the messy reality of shooting distant subjects from a windswept Somerset coast, it should at least be fun finding out.

Peak Design is today launching a new phone case: the GNAR Case. Intended to supplement the brand's existing Everyday Case (already available for various models of iPhone, Pixel and Galaxy phones), the GNAR Case is designed for motorbike and bicycle riders who want additional protection for their phone when it's mounted to handlebars.

Case thickness has been increased from 2.4mm in the Everyday Case to 3.2mm in the GNAR Case, enabling it to withstand a drop from up to 4.5m (15ft), while still maintaining a slim feel. The case is constructed from 100% recycled polycarbonate with a soft microfiber internal liner, plus a rubberized TPU bumper for additional shock protection. This also features a diamond-knurled edge texture to enhance grip, even when you're wearing gloves, while extra-wide anodized aluminium buttons further improve phone usability. Like Peak Design's other phone cases, the GNAR Case incorporates Peak Design's magnetic and mechanical locking 'SlimLink' connection, making it effortlessly easy to securely attach your phone to a handlebar mount, or any other mount in the Peak Design range.

The Peak Design GNAR Case is available now for iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max, priced at $59.95. From April 24-27th the case will be included in Peak Design's Make The Switch Sale, during which it'll be offered with a 40% discount.

Trends driven in part by social media towards retro cameras have made vintage-inspired cameras harder to find – but an upcoming modular smartphone case could soon give the iPhone that coveted look. While phone cases that look like old cameras aren’t difficult to find, the China-based brand Fotorgear is crafting a case that not only makes an iPhone look like a retro camera but function like one too.

The Fotorgear Retro Photography Kit is a case designed for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, with a version for older iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max cameras in the works. The case takes inspiration from the vintage aesthetic and wraps the smartphone in a metal-textured frame with a leather-like wrap.

But, what makes the Fotorgear Retro Photography Kit unusual is that it’s actually a modular kit that adds physical controls to the smartphone – in other words, it’s not just for looks. The base kit will give the iPhone that old-school look, but users can also slide in another grip to the bottom to give the thin iPhone a more camera-like grip.

At the top of the case, the kit can also add what the company is calling the Retro Bar, which adds physical camera controls. The bar communicates with the iPhone through Bluetooth, enabling the case to add two knobs, a physical shutter, a zoom toggle and a cold shoe slot.

Using the FotorGear Camera App, those physical controls can be customized to control different camera settings including exposure compensation and switching digital color filters.

The case’s enclosure around the iPhone camera is built with magnets, making the case compatible with FotorGear’s square filters or with 67mm circular filters using a magnetic adapter. The case is also compatible with the brand’s T-mount lenses, to add external optics, and also looks to be compatible with a magnetic ring stand.

I tried out camera-like smartphone cases several years ago as the industry shifted away from point-and-shoots and towards smartphone cameras. I wasn’t impressed with the early models at the time – beyond the Bluetooth connection introducing lag, they just didn’t feel like a camera. A case can change some of how a smartphone feels, but it isn’t going to completely change it into the feel of a dedicated camera.

The Fotorgear Retro Photography Kit hasn’t officially been launched yet, but I’m intrigued by the mix of physical controls, filter compatibility, and that retro look. I personally don’t look at the case and want to replace a compact camera, as I think there’s something to the separation between a smartphone and a real camera to record memories without distractions.

But could a case elevate those snapshots I grab with my iPhone when I can’t reach for a dedicated camera? Could a retro case be the next best thing to those pricey retro compact cameras? Without actually feeling the case's ergonomics and trying out those Bluetooth-connected controls, it’s hard to say. But the announcement has at the very least piqued my interest.

The company expects pre-orders of the FotorGear Retro Photography kit for the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max to begin shipping March 18. The kit lists for $249 (approximately £193 / AU$394) with a pre-order discount bringing the price down to $199 (£154 / AU$315.

With the iPhone 16 Pro, the smartphone finally got the Max-level zoom lens – and now smartphone photographers have a slimmer photo case option too. Announced on March 4, the PolarPro LightChaser Pro 16 Slim brings a wide range of add-on lenses and filters in a slimmer, lighter design. The new Slim case, which will be available for both the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, will support several add-on photo accessories. That list includes a selection of mist filters, including the Gold Mist designed to mimic the look of Kodak Gold film, as well as the Black Mist filter. Both mist filters add an atmospheric effect and soften and spread out light sources.

The Slim case can also place PolarPro’s special effects or FX lenses. The catalog of FX filters include optics that warp and bend, as well as adding prism effects to smartphone photography.

The new LightChaser Slim case and accessories are available beginning today from PolarPro. The case retails for $49.99 (approximately £39.40 and AU$80.54). Filters start at $49.99 while lenses are $69.99 (about £55.17 / AU$ 112.41).

Apple has just unveiled its new flagship iPhone – the iPhone 16 Pro Max, a phone with a heavy focus on content creation.

RØDE produces a wide range of pro products such as the RØDE Wireless Pro, so I was very keen to get my hands on their version of a smartphone cage. It arrived just in time for my trip to Normandy, France to film the 80th Anniversary of D-Day and it proved very useful indeed…

RØDE Phone Cage: Specifications

RØDE Phone Cage: Design & Handling

The RØDE Cage is constructed from high-grade aluminum which makes it a rugged but lightweight unit (weighing in at 285 grams).  Around the edge of the cage are 5 cold shoe mounts, into which you can slot devices such as radio mic receivers or a shotgun mic. There are 14 standard 1/4 inch threads (so you can screw in a range of accessories such as an LED).  The cage has 17 ARRI 1/4 threads too. 

These threads offer support for accessories that are compatible with the ultra-stable ARRI locking-pin standard. Each thread has two (holes) on either side of it. When you attach a compatible accessory such as a handle it has two pins that slot into the two holes on either side of the thread to keep the handles stable (so that they don’t slip in the thread). There are also two 3/8 inch threads in case you need to attach the cage to an accessory such as a microphone pole or stand.

What makes the RØDE Phone Cage really stand out when compared to other cages and grips is the way that you mount your phone onto it. Many cages (such as the Neewer Cage for iPhone 15 Pro Max) are phone-specific. The phone slides into a cage which then grips it tightly. If you upgrade your phone then the cage will become redundant as it will no longer fit the new model. 

The RØDE Phone Cage has a circular magnetic mount that you screw into the center of the cage. Your MagSafe smartphone (or its MagSafe case) then magnetically attaches itself to the mount. You can then use the cage to maneuver your smartphone and all its attached accessories when filming, but if you need to take a call you can easily unclip the phone from the magnetic rig. This saves you the hassle (and embarrassment) of holding a bulky rig to your ear when someone rings you in the middle of a shoot!

RØDE Phone Cage: Performance

To test the RØDE Cage I took it to Normandy in France to document my brother’s trip there with a restored WW2 Willies Jeep. Unlike other cages that I’ve reviewed, such as the Neewer Cage, the RØDE Phone Cage doesn’t ship with handles. It’s designed to work with accessories that you already own. Fortunately, the two handles from my SmallRig All-In-One Kit for Smartphone slotted nicely into the RØDE’s 1/inch ARRI system threads. 

You can mount handles on the top and bottom or opposite sides of the rig to shoot vertically or horizontally. As an old-school videographer, I still can’t bring myself to shoot vertically so I went for a horizontal orientation.  You could grip the edge of the cage as there’s plenty of space between it and the iPhone that’s clamped to the magnetic mount at the center of the cage. 

However, the two handles provided a much more comfortable and secure grip on the rig, which I appreciated when filming from a moving jeep that wasn’t equipped with seat belts. Or a roof. The handles helped me perform smoother pans and tilts than I could with a handheld iPhone. I also used a 1/4-inch thread to mount a small Hobolite Iris LED (review coming soon) onto the top of the cage. This enabled me to summon a light source when shooting in dark interiors which helped my iPhone use a less noisy ISO setting. 

I popped a SmallRig shotgun mic onto a cold shoe mount on top of the rig and attached it via a cable to my magnetically mounted iPhone 15 Pro Max. The cage has four built-in cable management slots at each corner, so there’s no danger of dangling cables getting in the way. The gun mic was great for recording interviews on the fly. I was also easily able to unplug the gun mic’s cable and attach a plug-in Godox WEC receiver to my iPhone’s USB-C socket. This enabled me to clip the Godox transmitter onto my brother and wirelessly record him chatting to WW2 veterans from a distance. 

I really like the large space that you get between the edge of the magnetically attached iPhone and the RØDE Phone Cage. With cages that grip tightly around your smartphone (such as the SmallRig Brandon Li), you can’t plug a wireless mic receiver into your iPhone.  The larger RØDE Phone Cage had no such problems with attaching accessories.

I’ve mentioned how handy the magnetic mount is if you need to quickly detach your phone. The magnet is very strong and no amount of shaking the rig will cause the phone to detach (as you’ll see in this review’s supporting video). However, if you push the phone forward this leverage action can cause the phone to detach from the magnetic mount and it did fall four times during the earlier part of my shoot.

Fortunately, the iPhone was wearing a MagSafe case so it didn’t suffer any damage. The falling episodes tended to occur when I unplugged the gun mic to plug in the Godox receiver (or vice versa) and this levering pressure was enough to detach the phone. However, once I learned about this levering hazard I was able to avoid future phone drops.

RØDE Phone Cage: Verdict

The RØDE Phone Cage enables you to attach a host of devices to your smartphone, including LEDS, mics, handles, and tripods. The attached handles enable you to perform pro camera moves with ease (and keep a safe grip on your valuable smartphone when shooting from moving vehicles).  The large space between your phone and the cage makes it easy to attach various cables and devices to your phone’s USB-C connector - though you need to be careful not to apply too much pressure to the phone or it might detach from the magnetic connector. If you own lots of accessories then the RØDE Phone Cage will fit nicely into your shooting ecosystem. However, if you don’t have a kit such as handles then consider the alternatives in this review.

Alternatives

Making underwater photography more accessible than ever, Sealife has released a new and improved smartphone casing for use down to depths of upto 130 feet (40 meters).

With significant improvements over the original SportsDiver case, the new SportDiver Ultra is almost universally compatible with modern smartphones, from the iPhone 8 and later, as well as the larger Android devices like the Samsung Galaxy Ultra series. 

The phone case is made from polycarbonate, stainless steel, aluminum, and optical grade glass – offering near-neutral buoyancy depending on the phone model. 

Designed for comfortable handling and ease of use in the water, the SportDiver Ultra allows snorkelers, scuba divers, spear fishers, or even just swimmers to take incredible photos with their phones underwater.  

Advanced external settings include zoom control, exposure adjustment, auto/manual focus, white balance, lens selection, RAW+JPEG mode, and more (also depending on the phone model). The SportDiver camera app is available for both Android and iOS platforms. “This app seamlessly switches between photo and video modes, harnessing the native camera technology of the smartphone to deliver the high-quality images and videos users have come to expect", says Sealife, who notably introduced first ever non-housing underwater digital camera back in 2017, 

For those worried about data protection, the app does not require or ask for your email address, phone number, or personal information.

One of the new and improved features is the Leak Avoidance System, a pre-dive pressure test to ensure the housing is airtight and completely waterproof before entering the water. Another failsafe feature is an internal moisture sensor, which activates a five-second alarm and on-screen warning “in the unlikely event the waterproof seal is compromised.”

For complete peace of mind while using your precious phone underwater, the new interior design protects delicate electronics from any excess water they may come into contact with when opening the case. Lastly, the ‘Moisture Muncher’ capsule prevents fogging and internal condensation.

Practical as well as versatile, the SportDiver Ultra case features seven tripod mounting point to be allow it to be used with different underwater lighting options. 

Accessories that will be launched with the new underwater casing include two dome port options to allow the use of a smartphone's ultrawide angle lens, and an adapter that allows the use of external wide-angle and macro lenses with your phone.

Released this month, the SportDiver Ultra is now on sale for $349.95  (approximately £278 GBP, AU$528). A bundle that combines the casing with SeaLife's own Sea Dragon 2500 light will retail for $749.95 (around £600 / AU$1,135).

As a regular Digital Camera World reviewer I’ve been impressed (and sometimes surprised) by the wide range of gadgets and devices that Joby produces, from podcasting microphones such as the Joby Wavo POD - to more unusual devices such as a motion-controlled 360º smartphone tripod. 

I’ve reviewed smartphone grips before but nothing as eye-catching and specialist as the Joby SeaPal. This is a waterproof smartphone grip that enables you to film or take photos underwater while keeping your expensive smartphone safe from being water-damaged or lost at sea! 

According to Apple, the iPhone 15 Pro Max can film at a depth of up to 18 meters for 30 minutes, which makes it water resistant (but not waterproof due to the time limit). Given the cost of an iPhone, most of us wouldn’t want to put Apple’s water resistance claim to the test, plus a beach environment also increases the risk of your iPhone (or any smartphone) being damaged by sand and smeared in suntan lotion.

The Joby SeaPal should allow you to film up to 10 meters without a time limit and it is waterproof rather than water resistant. So Joby SeaPal, you have my attention. But how do you perform and are you worth your relatively expensive price tag? And how does it compare to some of the other best underwater camera housings in our guide?

Joby SeaPal: Specifications

Joby SeaPal: Design & Handling

Given that Joby produces a wide range of photography and videography gadgets you might wonder if they have the experience to produce a specialist underwater case. Fortunately, they’ve joined forces with AquaTech - a company who have been making water housings for professional underwater photographers for 20 years. Despite being the result of a collaboration the SeaPal bears the distinctive branded look of all Joby products thanks to its bright orange grip.

The JOBY SeaPal Waterproof Case takes a little while to set up for the first time (around 15 minutes), but then it’s ready to use instantly in future shoots. It ships with a collection of rubber mounts that you need to clip into the body of the case to fit your particular iPhone or smartphone model. A downloadable manual gives you a clear diagram of which rubber mounts should be inserted and where to place them. After an initial waterproofing test in a bucket or sink you can pop your iPhone into the case and rotate a large plastic button to seal it in. Make sure that the knob makes a click to ensure that the case is fully sealed.

The front of the case has a large glass port for your smartphone’s lenses to shoot through (though at an ultra-wide angle, you may catch the edge of the case in shot, but this isn’t unusual with many grips and cages). This SeaPal glass is superior to cheaper third-party plastic cases that may be more prone to fogging up. The glass is also scratch resistant so your shots and clips should look crystal clear. 

On the rear of the case is a plastic membrane. This is thin enough for you to interact with your iPhone’s screen while filming underwater, so you can swipe in the Camera app to change shooting modes or trigger a recording. As this plastic membrane has to be thin enough for you to use your phone’s touch screen I was concerned that it could be damaged by a sharp object such as a plastic spade in your seaside bag. 

However, as a sensible photographer, you’ll carry it in a dedicated camera bag like I did on my test shoot. I used a Shimoda Urban Explore (review coming very soon) that had adjustable padded storage sections to protect the SeaPal’s vulnerable membrane from contact with other devices.

Joby SeaPal: Performance

I didn’t have the budget for a trip to a tropical ocean so to test the SeaPal I took it down to my local park. The park has a river running through it and I’ve often seen fish swimming in it, so this was the perfect opportunity to try and film them. I attached the JOBY Bluetooth Shutter Grip (sold separately) so I could trigger video recordings with the press of a physical button, rather than tapping the phone’s touchscreen through the SeaPal’s plastic membrane. I also attached another separately sold accessory - the 6-inch plastic Dome Port to the front of the case.

The SeaPal has a couple of screw threads on the top where you can attach accessories such as flexible Joby GorillaPod arms sporting Joby Beamo LED lights. This could be handy when illuminating the murky depths. I attached a third-party selfie stick to one of these screw mounts. The stick was perfect for lowering the SeaPal into the river and making it pan my iPhone in search of fish to film. 

Initially, I filmed with the dome accessory attached. The dome pushes the horizon of the water back a few inches so you get a more defined line between above and below the water’s surface. However, when you lift the casing out of the water droplets tend to stick to the dome’s acrylic surface and obscure the view. When I removed the dome the water cleared much more quickly from the SeaPal’s glass surface, so I can’t recommend the dome as a ‘must have’ accessory - though it does make your rig look like one of the mini-submarines from the movie ‘The Abyss’!

The footage captured by my SeaPal-mounted iPhone was relatively clear in the foreground but due to particles in the water visibility dropped off rapidly. Sadly I couldn’t capture any fish in the murky lake - see supporting video. 

I was able to trigger the camera to record by pressing through the rubber membrane. However, as a metal clamp on the rear partially obscured part of the iPhone’s screen it was a bit of a fiddle to playback my clips. Occasionally bubbles would rise up around the SeaPal but these were produced when it disturbed the mud at the bottom of the river, rather than being indications of a leak. After 30 minutes of failing to film a fish I was happy to see that my iPhone was bone dry, and I can’t wait to try the SeaPal out when I eventually hit the beach.

Joby SeaPal: Verdict

If you want to film the antics of your friends and family as they make a splash on a beach holiday then the JobySea Pal is a ‘must have’. Divers and snorkelers will also enjoy capturing footage and shots of beautifully colorful shoals of fish with their smartphones mounted in this rig. I’d recommend buying the additional JOBY Bluetooth Shutter Grip as this makes it easier to hold onto the case and trigger your Camera app’s shutter, though I’d save your cash when it comes to considering the 6-inch Dome. 

Alternatives

Being a regular Digital Camera World kit reviewer since 2022 I’ve tested the products of well known brands such as Hollyland, SmallRig and Godox on multiple occasions. However the Neewer iPhone Cage is the first Neewer product that I’ve put to the test, though I have recently started to notice the Neewer logo appearing on devices in friend’s studios (and in adverts on my social media feeds). 

Neewer produce a wide range of photography and video products, from lighting equipment such as LED panels, flashes and ring lights to video monitors and microphones.  

The Neewer Cage for iPhone 15 Pro Max falls in the lower price range of their output but as someone who predominantly shoots professional video on my iPhone 15 Pro Max  I was very interested in putting the cage through its paces, especially as I’d lined up the services of a stuntman (thanks Matt Igwe!) to film a parkour sequence.

You can pick up the Neewer Cage from Amazon in the UK or the States for $89 / £69 at the time of writing and can be found on Amazon. This is a good price that undercuts some of the more established competition, although there are cheaper options, but with far more questionable quality.

NEEWER PA024K Cage: Design & Handling

The Cage kit consists of a black aluminum frame that fits securely around your iPhone 15 Pro Max, plus two attachable metal handles. Unlike larger cages such as the SmallRig All-In-One Kit, the NEEWER cage is only a little larger than your iPhone so it doesn’t take up us much space in your kit bag.  Once you’ve slid your iPhone into place (and clamped the cage shut with a locking lever) you need to attach two handles to the cage for a better grip on your iPhone. 

The handles screw easily into place courtesy of textured screws and you can mount them on either side of the cage for shooting in landscape orientation, or place them in the threads on the top and bottom of the cage to shoot portrait-orientated clips for social media sites. The two handles are made of smooth metal but provide a very secure grip. By holding your iPhone mounted between the wider spread of the cage’s two handles you can iron out the smaller jerkier movements you’d get if you simply held the ‘naked’  iPhone in two hands. This enables you to perform smoother and more controlled camera moves such as pans, tilts and crane shots.

The Neewer cage also has a 67mm thread filter mount so you can attach filters such as the Neewer ND2-32 Filter (sold separately) to your iPhone when shooting in high-contrast locations. The kit also ships with a 17mm lens mount for attaching iPhone lenses (sold separately).

The Neewer iPhone cage is most similar in design to the SmallRig Brandon Li iPhone 15 Pro Max cage, though its handles lack the cold shoe mounts found on the SmallRig kit’s handles. The NEEWER kit does have cold shoe mounts on the cage itself, so we were able to attach a JOBY Beamo LED to our iPhone for shooting parkour in our location’s darker corridors. This cold shoe mounted LED was especially handy when shooting in the gloomier corridors of our test location as the iPhone Camera’s Action Mode needed plenty of light to stabilize the handheld footage of our fast-moving parkour practitioner.

One note of caution is the cage’s compatibility with certain wireless mic receivers. If you have a cable-free USB-C plug-in receiver such as that on the Hollyland Lark M2 then the handle of the cage obscures the receiver’s access to your iPhone’s USB-C socket. This is only an issue if you are shooting in a horizontal (landscape) orientation. If your wireless mic’s receiver is connected to your iPhone via a USB-C cable then you’ll be able to attach it to the iPhone without any obstruction from the cage.

To test the NEEWER Cage I shot a parkour sequence with my iPhone 15 Pro Max mounted in the cage. I was able to follow my fast-moving subject’s every move without fear of dropping the iPhone (and I was also able to run after him while gripping the cage with both hands - see supporting video). 

The combination of the cage’s wide-spread handles and the iPhone’s optical image stabilization (OIS) hardware meant that my handheld while running tracking shots was gimbal smooth (as you’ll see from this section’s supporting video footage).  Thanks to the cage’s ‘easy to grip’ side handles I was able to smoothly rotate the iPhone through 360º to follow the subject as he performed a summersault.

In theory, I could have used a gimbal to perform a 360º rotation but getting the speed of the roll axis to match the subject’s rotation would be a challenge. By shooting our subject’s summersault using a handheld cage I was able to start rotating the iPhone at the correct time and match the speed of the subject’s rotation with precision. I do enjoy using gimbals for action sequences but by using a cage-mounted iPhone you can work more quickly as you don’t need to spend time changing the gimbal’s mode between PTF (Pan Tilt Follow), PF (Pan Follow), L (Lock) or Inception mode (where it rolls through 360º).

The Neewer cage enabled me to follow every move of my parkouring stuntman as it happened while producing gimbal-smooth results and a cage won’t run out of battery power! (Though I was a bit tired after two hours of running about!)

Another welcome feature on the Neewer Cage for iPhone 15 Pro Max was a 67mm thread filter mount on the front of the cage. This enabled me to attach a NEEWER ND2-32 Filter (sold separately) to the cage. By rotating the filter via two metal handles  I was able to reduce the amount of light entering the iPhone’s lenses so I could capture detail in the bright sky as my subject somersaulted through the air. The cage also ships with a panel that you can use to place lenses (sold separately) over your iPhone’s wide-angle camera.

A couple of weeks ago an Apple patent for 'Spatial Composites' surfaced (do you see what we did there?) which has the potential to change the, er, surfaces (how about now?) of Apple devices, perhaps to the point they don't even need a phone case.

US Patent 11678445, filed by Apple's senior director for materials engineering and product design, Chris Prest, describes the patent as covering the housing of an electronic device, with 'at least one sidewall extending from the substrate' and, more unusually, 'abrasion-resistant members at least partially embedded in the substrate and extending beyond the surface.'

There is a degree of vagueness – there is an incentive in all patent applications to make the claim vague as it offers the possibility to try and enforce widely. For example, the patent isn't specific about what material the abrasion-resistant members would be made of, only that they would be harder than the material they are molded into, and they would stick out of it, like a kind of metallic or ceramic fur.

It is interesting that the design hints at a return to the plastic shell of the iPhone 3G era, rather than the more modern designs which have an outer edge element. The substrate in the patent, after all, includes the sidewall – a component that has been separate from the back since the iPhone 5.

Of course patents are not the same thing as real devices. Sometimes they're even used strategically to deflect the attention of industry analysts. Equally they could represent experiments that just never made it. Apple has plenty of patents related to folding phones, and plenty have been rumored (we've even covered folding iPhones here) but we've yet to see one.

Outex has long been manufacturing underwater housings to allow photographers to take their cameras under the water, or out in aggressive weather. Outex’s approach is a flexible skin for the device, with an optical glass dome so the image quality isn’t compromised (offered in both flat or dome options). It’s a patented design that leaves access to camera controls and viewfinder, and now it has created a new skin to fit many people’s best camera: the phone. On the face of it, that seems a great idea, but does it work? Also, given Outex’s pro glass is designed for full-sized lenses, are we looking at some serious overkill? We decided to find out in a nearby muddy pond!

Design and handling

The Phone Pro kit consists of a gorgeous dome of glass fitted to a black screw mount and what looks like a phone-shaped prophylactic. The camera case is a single piece of slightly cloudy clear rubbery plastic, which is thin enough to operate a touch screen through. To fit the phone you need a small amount of assembly; the handset needs to be persuaded into place. We found this was possible with an iPhone 14 Pro Max in a case (though Outex suggest using without one). More or less any phone with the main camera on the top left (including Samsung’s Galaxy line) will fit, so you can swap phones as you choose.

One your phone is more-or-less in place, you take the ring and manipulate it into a groove in the 120mm cut-out circle which you just squeezed your phone through. Then, finally, gripping the ring through the rubber, you screw the domed glass lens on. This has a quality tooth grip and the rubber isn’t slippery so it’s easier to manipulate than you might imagine. After that, it’s time you use your phone’s camera as usual.

Performance

The Outex system manages to live up to its promises. Although we’ve not had the opportunity to test below 1m of pressure, we had no issues with leakage. The glass provided an exceptional image through all of the iPhone’s cameras. There was no distortion visible in the images or video, though the water we tested didn’t really lend itself for the zoom lens! The more significant factor is the lack of light bending, and that the dome is sufficient to minimise the apparent thickness of the waterline, making possible under/over shots.

We were impressed that that the phone’s touchscreen even seemed to work under the surface. The shutter button will also work, though is less tactile than the bare handset given the even ‘universal fit’. It’s just as sensible, though, to hit record once and keep capturing footage. 

Viewing the screen is subject to some air bubbles but it is perfectly possible to compose a shot.

We also found the thoughtful wrist strap with pull-tight grip did a good job of ensuring we could briefly let go of the phone and housing without the worry of losing it.

Verdict

There are a lot of reasons why you might want to make your phone camera your underwater – or damp conditions – device of choice. Pro video recording apps can make your phone equivalent to some top notch cameras, and the options for immediate editing and sharing without the trouble of copying/downloading are high on that list.

That said, the Outex’s undoubted quality is reflected in the price. While the flat glass version ($149) puts it in the accessory bracket, go for the $349 Dome kit and you’re spending a similar amount to a waterproof action cameras like the best GoPros. There is something to be said for having a separate device, especially weighed against the time taken to remove and keep safe the delicate glass and sheath of the Outex offering. 

The dome, however, does offer serious photographers more than a GoPro can. The distance from the camera’s lens opens photographic possibilities which surface tension on a small lens makes impossible. For that reason alone, this is an easy recommendation for serious enthusiasts and pros.

(the American tech company that produces speciality glass and ceramics) has announced Gorilla Glass Victus 2, its latest generation of screen glass which it says delivers improved drop performance on rough surfaces like concrete.

Corning wanted to get tougher on testing, and after trying out many collisions under test conditions, it says the Victus 2 glass is able to survive drops from a meter on surfaces like concrete. In comparison: “competitive aluminosilicate glasses from other manufacturers typically failed when dropped from half a meter or less."

What is Gorilla Glass anyway?

The five weeks since the iPhone 14 family launched has seen rumors about surrounding the iPhone 15, which we expect to see in September 2023, increase significantly. The most recent comes from the usually reliable @LeaksApplePro and says that there will be an iPhone 15 Ultra and that it’ll be made from Titanium. Titanium rather than a stainless steel casing that is, which Apple's been using since the 2017 iPhone X…

Two words spring to mind when we think of a titanium iPhone: strong and expensive. Manufacturing a titanium flagship would allow Apple to craft a phone that is seriously strong – titanium is between three and four times stronger than stainless steel and often used in aeroplane components. 

Compared to stainless steel, at the same weight titanium’s strength-to-weight ratio means it can provide the same strength at 40 percent of the weight, so Apple would be able to either build an immensely string phone or a very light one (without sacrificing strength). 

Less exciting, are our thoughts on costs of the rumored titanium iPhone 15 Ultra. As titanium is one of the costliest industrial metals (at least ten times the price of stainless steel) we don’t know, or rather dread to think, how much Apple would charge for the alleged titanium super flagship. 

The use of titanium would certainly help Apple justify a significantly more expensive phone, so we can’t write the rumor off as unlikely, especially as @LeaksApplePro has a good track record. 

iPhone 15: Rumors so far 

According to a recent rumor we can’t expect the long-awaited Apple chip to debut until at least 2025 and so Qualcomm is predicted to remain the supplier of modems for all iPhone 15 and iPhone 16 models instead. Currently then, it’s expected that all iPhone 15 models will be powered by Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon X70 modem, which was announced in February. 

The X70 supports up to 10 Gbps download speeds (as does the Snapdragon X65 modem in iPhone 14 models but boasts added artificial intelligence capabilities for faster average speeds, improved coverage, lower latency, better signal quality, and importantly up to 60% better power efficiency.

@LeaksApplePro has already spread several iPhone 15 rumours, including the Dynamic Island to stop being a Pro exclusive and feature in all models instead and all models in the iPhone 15 series ditching the Lightning port in favor of USB Type-C. 

The Apple iPhone 14 sees the newer SoC on the Pro model only and @LeaksApplePro says this will also be the case next year with standard iPhone 15 models getting the A16 Bionic and the Pro models featuring an all-new A17 one. 

It’s alleged, again by @LeaksApplePro, that Apple will use a new naming scheme for the iPhone15 and that the Pro Max label could be dropped. This would mean we would get iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, and 15 Ultra – potentially in titanium. Additionally, this leak says that the 6.7-inch Ultra model (which would replace the Pro Max as we know the range now) could have exclusive features in addition to the larger display.

Finally, the prolific leaker has also shared that Apple may be working on 8K video recording support and that the tech giant is looking to improve battery life for the new series. It’s rumored that on the iPhone 15 Ultra model, Apple is aiming for the battery to last 3-4 hours longer.

There’s plenty of time for a slew of leaks and rumors before the iPhone 15 family launches – we expect this to be in September 2023, in line with Apple’s stand launch model.

It's a little tricky to determine the exact model, but the lack of a curved screen, plus the large size of the device, points to it being the S21 Ultra from the limited glimpse we get in the recording.

The video was also uploaded to YouTube by Conflict Camera, which appears to be uploading regular videos documenting the current situation in the Ukraine, as well as general war-related videos, most roughly 20-40 seconds long. It's unclear as to the original source of the content, whether recorded by the channel, taken from Twitter, or submitted to the channel, though the video does include 'Location Unknown' in its title.

As to the legitimacy of the video, it is again unclear as to when this video was captured, who the soldier featured is and who the original video belongs to. While it should be taken with a pinch of salt, it's certainly not unusual for a device to stop a bullet. in 1968, famous war photographer Don McCullin's Nikon F SLR film camera was struck by an AK-47 bullet that was intended for him, saving his life also.

It can be seen in the video that snow is falling around the soldiers, in what looks like a trench, as they take cover avoiding the gunshots that ring out nearby. This weather may be an indication of when/where the video was captured, and the soldiers speaking in the Ukrainian language is an additional indicator that it may potentially be from the current war that is happening between Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. 

The bullet is thought to be a 7.62x39mm bullet that has been fired by Russian forces, (as speculated by RepublicWorld), which would have ended up in the soldier’s body likely sustaining a serious or even fatal injury from the ricochet bullet, had it not been for the smartphone residing in the perfect position of the soldier's side pocket. 

Always ensure your phone is protected by a case that is rugged enough to hold its own, and act as a ballistic safeguard on the off chance that you plan on entering any dangerous situations. Thankfully this soldier is seemingly alive and well, though he probably needs a new phone.

Next time someone lectures you about always having your phone at your side, you can point out that for one lucky man, having his phone was what saved his life.

A Brazilian man who was shot during an armed robbery had his life saved when the bullet was stopped by a Motorola phone in his pocket, according to images posted on social media by one of his doctors. What’s more, in a pleasingly serendipitous touch, the phone was housed in an Incredible Hulk case.

Images of the bullet-struck phone were posted on Twitter by Pedro Carvalho, one of the doctors who treated the victim following the attempted robbery in a rural area of the municipality of Petrolina, Brazil. 

The medical team at University Hospital in Petrolina had feared the worst after hearing the man had been shot, but examinations revealed that he had only suffered light bruising to the hip, with the phone and its green-skinned superhero cover taking the worst of the damage. The phone and Hulk absorbed the shot so completely that the bullet didn’t even penetrate the skin!

Reportedly, police did not arrive at the scene in time to catch the would-be robbers, who had already fled the scene. By the time authorities arrive, the victim was already being treated by paramedics. 

The life-saving phone in question was reportedly a Motorola Moto G5, which isn’t currently on our guide to the best Motorola phones. We might have to revisit that – after all, how many of the others can boast that they’ve stopped a bullet? 

With that said of course, there’s no guarantee it would repeat the trick, and we do feel duty bound to caution adventurous readers against wandering through dangerous areas with a phone for protection. You might not be as lucky as our unnamed Brazilian Marvel fan. 

The most important news, though, is that the victim was absolutely fine, and was discharged from hospital and sent home shortly after being admitted, as Dr Carvalho confirmed on Twitter. The same, however, cannot be said for the phone.
