The Fujifilm X Half is a retro digital camera made to feel like film – but as much as I was enamoured with the little camera when I first picked it up, I think it's too expensive. Or, at least, it usually is – A $200 discount is making the retro compact camera a much better buy.

The Fujifilm X Half is a digital compact camera that’s made to feel like film. For starters, it has the Fujifilm film simulation that’s made cameras like the X100VI so popular, along with a “film” advance lever. But, the X Half also has a film mode that comes with the film-like anticipation of seeing the photos.

I tried out the Fujifilm X Half at a recent photography show, and I was immediately charmed by the tiny retro compact camera – it’s smaller than it looks from the photos. But, I also thought it was a bit too pricey, as the camera lacks some pro-level features like RAW photos, and it still retails for $849 / £699 / AU$1,349.

I think the list price on the X Half is too steep, but a temporary price drop finally puts the retro camera at a price that feels just right for its list of features.

In the US, the price has just dropped by $200 to $650. The camera is also discounted in the UK, where it’s now £499, and in Australia, where it’s $899.

I think the Fujifilm X Half price is too steep, but the discount brings the compact camera to a price that better matches its feature set.

Buy it if you want a tiny retro camera that feels more like film.
Avoid it if you want features like RAW files or want a sensor larger than the 1-inch size.

At list price, the X Half is too expensive, but at a 20 to 33 percent discount (depending on where you live), it’s my first choice for a retro compact camera without X100VI-level prices.

As you're undoubtedly aware, the Amazon Ring is a doorbell that houses a camera, speaker, and microphone, and its primary purpose is to enable you to see who is at the door before you answer it. That may be a good enough reason on its own to invest in a Ring Doorbell, particularly as during the Black Friday sales, it's almost half price, dropping from AU$149 to just AU$75, but I'm going to give you a better one (it's directly below my roundup of the best Ring doorbell deals, but you can skip to the yarn by scrolling to the bottom). It hinges on the fact that not only do you not need to be in the house to answer the caller, or even in the same country, but every member of the household can be alerted when someone rings the doorbell.

Anyway, earlier this year, my 19-year-old son went traveling. It's something of a rite of passage for the kids in my neighborhood as they make their way to adulthood. Taking a gap year after finishing college, he'd worked hard in local restaurants to get enough cash together for a trip through Southeast Asia, to take some time to figure out what he was going to do with the rest of his life. Off he set to Bangkok with a bunch of his mates, and I was keen to hear about his adventures. But being a typical teen, his updates were brief, to say the least.

"How are you finding Thailand? I can't wait to hear what you've been up to!" I'd message. "Yeah, good," would come the WhatsApp response half a day later.

And so it went in the weeks that followed. "What are you doing today?" I'd ask. "In Cambodia" would be the two-word reply. "Oh wow! Have you been to the Angkor Wat temples? I'd love to see them, they're a photographer's dream!" I'd persevere. "Yeah, it's good," was as good as I was going to get.

Then, one day, I went to visit a friend. I rang his doorbell. His Ring doorbell…

"Dad!" the doorbell exclaimed. I was confused. My son went on to explain that he was in Vietnam and had met up with my friend's daughter when the Ring alert was triggered on her phone. The two are around the same age and have known each other since they were in nappies, and she was also on a gap year and on her own Asian adventure.

It was a little disconcerting, talking to a doorbell; he could see me, but I couldn't see him. But we had a good chat for half an hour about his travels, and I learnt a lot more about the sights he'd seen and scrapes he'd got into than I had in the previous two months of messaging.

And that is why I'm buying a Ring Doorbell in the Black Friday sales!

Trying the new XGODY projector – which is available for surprisingly little money on either side of the Atlantic this Black Friday – has been a bit of a surprise for me. A price cut of 15% on an already very cheap device has put it at just over $100 and just under £100, yet its features do genuinely seem to stack up against some devices costing more than ten times that.

Xgody might not be a well-known name in the projector space, but the entire industry has been turned on its head by unknown brands in the last couple of years and some have performed very well in my reviews.

The N6 Pro has kept the features at a level which would have been striking only a few years ago, and they are still more than good enough for most occasions.

While many projectors now use Android TV, this uses WhaleOS, but in my quick test I was able to install a Netflix and a Prime Video app (and others seem available) to stream video. The built-in speakers are good enough, too.

700 ANSI Lumens of 700 is provided. That's the light measure of a projector, and, basically, this is more than good enough for evenings. Viewing at about 2m / 6ft, I was able to create a very impressive image area equivalent to about a 75-inch TV which was more than bright enough to view, even in a room with daylight.

WhaleOS allows for apps (there is, apparently, 32GB of storage on board) and has numerous settings. I was initially disappointed by the image quality in the darker areas, but by turning on a 'Dynamic' mode the video quality got better overall too.

Other features I'd expect on pricier devices are all included too – a Bluetooth remote that works without needing to be pointed at the device and a built-in tiltable support. This is backed up with a motion sensor and auto keystone correction so you just move the projector to the right spot for you, tilt it so the light is projected where you want, and it then automatically adjusts the image out to something perfectly squared-off.

All this happens well within the kind of speeds I'd expect for something much more expensive, so – if you don't have a projector – this is definitely a very interesting way to buy something you might never have expected to own. It's light and easy to carry. Try it anywhere (or gift a home cinema to anyone!)

I got into photography late in life – by then it was the digital age, so I didn't indulge in any film photography. It's always interested me, but the cost of having to buy film and getting them processed... that was too much for me.

And then Fujifilm released the X Half earlier this year and I sat up to pay attention. Since its launch, I've been wanting to get myself this quirky little camera and was tempted by its early Black Friday price drop to AU$918 recently.

Thank goodness I held off because the Fujifilm X Half is now going for AU$798 and I'm sorely tempted to take the plunge. Will it get cheaper? I wouldn't hold my breath – this 41% discount is fantastic already and, at this price, stock is going to disappear real quick.

Also called the X-HF1, we've given the Fujifilm X Half our own names here at DCW. We've called it "quirky", "fun" and "playful". What that means is this camera isn't for the serious photographer – it's for those who want the experience of shooting film without the cost of film and development.

I definitely wouldn't buy this at full price, but at under AU$800, it's arguably worth it for some of photographers like me – someone who wants to have a little fun between the serious shoots. In fact, I'm hoping this camera will return some of the passion I've been losing for photography.

I don't care that it's spec sheet doesn't read like a powerhouse camera, I'm keen on trying to capture 3:4 vertical shots which, for me, will be a challenge in framing as I've never shot with a half-frame camera before. And guess what, this orientation is perfect for social media too!

I love the fact that it uses a fixed pancake lens that has the same focal length as Fujifilm disable QuickSnap cameras, with an f/2.8. But this small lens manages to squeeze in a focus ring and a manual aperture ring – that's brilliant engineering!

As mentioned previously, there's a film camera mode on board where you can choose the number of frames you want to shoot (like you would when buying a roll), and as you start shooting, you can't go back or review your shot – exactly like on a film camera.

To keep that experience going, you can then 'develop' the 'roll' in the Fujifilm X Half app where you can also create 2-in-1 diptychs. Uh huh, really want this one!

Every year, it feels like I always have someone on my gifting list that seems to have everything – and one of my favorite ways to get out of the I-have-no-idea-what-to-buy rut is to brainstorm custom gifts. Gift idea: If you don't already have the photos to put in an album, you can gift a Chatbooks subscription and enable the recipient to create a new photo book every month – which is a great idea for parents of young kids. Year-in-review photo books also make a great gift for grandparents.

I've spent the past week knee-deep in searches and promo pages to round up the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday camera deals. As a result, there have been far too many Amazon tabs open in my browser for far too long.

Well, Amazon noticed. And it was obviously very confused. You know how Amazon recommends you more stuff, based on the stuff you've been looking at? Well, I've been looking at such a bizarre and non-sequitur range of camera gear that clearly Amazon thinks I will buy any old crap.

DVDs and instruction manuals for decade-old DSLRs. Editing software on a Windows 98 CD-ROM. A lime green American Idol camera.

I thought I'd seen some junk on the depths of Amazon before, but this took the back alley bric-a-brac to all new levels. Here are the "highlights" of the crap that Amazon recommended to me while I was trying to be a good person and find deals to save you money…

American Idol Digital Camera ($7)

If you've ever wanted a lime green digital camera on a keychain with a tiny American Idol logo on it, this is the camera for you. There's no indication of its specs, though it promises to be able to take stills and video, as well as act as a webcam.

The highlight here is ostensibly the included software that enables you to "put yourself onto the American Idol stage"… but you'll need a Windows XP computer to run said software – or to download your images, as there's no memory card on this camera. Which means, there's no other way to get your files off it.

The description suggests that you "throw it in your pocket and go". I suggest that you throw it in the trash and forget this ever happened.

Nikon School DVD: Fast, Fun & Easy Great Digital Pictures ($6.96)

How quaint, Amazon is recommending me a DVD! And I say that as someone who still buys physical media (so maybe I brought this recommendation on myself). However, perhaps the only thing quainter than Amazon recommending a DVD in 2024 is that it's recommending a DVD designed for the Nikon D40 / D40X, which was launched in 2006.

So, what can I expect from this digital versatile disc for a camera that's approaching two decades old? Well, I'll get 35 minutes of knowledge bombs from National Geographic Traveler photographer Bob Krist (in 16x9 widescreen, no less).

"Bob will lead you through a fun day of shooting while explaining the advantages of the various Digital Vari-Program Modes," threatens the description. Who knew that insomnia could be cured in 35 minutes.

ArcSoft Camera Suite 1.3 ($5.98)

At last, I can say goodbye to my Adobe subscription! Gone are the days of paying through the nose for Creative Cloud – for just six bucks, I can get ArcSoft PhotoImpression and ArcSoft VideoImpression on one handy CD-ROM.

There's a catch, though. Remember how you needed Windows XP to run the software for that American Idol camera? Well, that's positively futuristic compared to this – because ArcSoft Camera Suite 1.3 requires Windows 98SE / Me / 2000. Or Macintosh 9 / X if you're one of those strange people who owns an Apple Macintosh computer.

No time to worry about that, though – Amazon warns me in bold letters that there's "Only 1 left in stock – order soon"…

Nikon D700 User's Manual ($22.99)

Who even knew that Amazon sold camera manuals? Is this why the last camera I bought had the manual missing from the box? Come to think of it, who even knew that camera manuals were worth so much… I should dig all of mine out and make a nice chunk of change!

Still, I've never owned a Nikon D700 (a rather fine full-frame professional DSLR camera that came out in 2008), so maybe I should pick up the manual to see what I was missing out on.

The question is, do I pay $23 bucks for this paper manual, or download the PDF from Nikon for free? Hmm. Well, I did say that I still collect physical media…

Kenko Digital Mini Camera 9300 ($20.95)

Far and away the most intriguing thing Amazon tried to get me to buy was this James Bond-looking watch camera – which I would no doubt have gone bananas over as a kid, though I'm not quite as enamored with its 0.3MP resolution and 320 x 240 video today.

In true 007 fashion, it looks like there's a quick release mechanism to deploy the camera from the wrist strap, take a couple of covert shots and then put it back before you're noticed by SPECTRE or Smirnoff or whoever your arch nemesis is.

Unlike the wretched American Idol camera, this one comes with a USB cable – so you may well be able to transfer your files without having to install ancient software that requires a decades-old operating system. The only thing I can't figure out is that it somehow requires three AAA batteries. How big is this thing?

Olympus Silca-5S Silica Gel ($13.56)

You know sometimes when you buy an expensive piece of electronic equipment, it comes with a little cloth or paper packet of silica gel? Most people dump those straight in the trash. Other people apparently pay 13 bucks to buy them from Olympus / OM System.

It looks like this is intended for owners of underwater camera housings or waterproof cameras – and since I was looking at deals on the latter, I guess this is how the Amazon algorithm decided that I need a bag of silica sachets.

In case you're curious, these packets of dessicant are drying agents used to prevent moisture – so they're obviously ideal for kit that's designed to be used in water. However, as someone who always keeps his packets of silica gel, this is 13 bucks that Amazon won't be getting from me.

Minolta Background Priority Card ($12.95)

In fairness, this thing is actually pretty fascinating. Back in 1988, Minolta introduced the Maxxum 7000i – an innovative film SLR that introduced the concept of Creative Expansion Cards, which could be inserted into the camera to power special shooting functions.

Some of these were quite clever, such as the Exposure Bracketing and Intervalometer cards, along with truly creative cards like Fantasy that shifted focus during exposure to combine a misty soft focus effect with zoom-like effect.

This Background Priority card is a little less interesting, enabling the camera to maintain background sharpness if the focal length or distance changes. However, this Expansion Card feature is pretty ingenious for a camera from 1988 – and makes me miss the glory days of Minolta.

Amazon's Black Friday pricing doesn't only change by the day, but can vary from hour to hour, or seemingly by the minute. It's a nightmare for me – trying to keep track of the best Black Friday camera deals to provide the best buying advice. And it's a nightmare for you too – if you see a cracking deal on Amazon, should you jump in and buy it or wait to see if the price drops further? The trouble is, there's just as much chance that the price will go higher instead…

No doubt there's some AI-powered dynamic pricing robot adjusting the cost behind the scenes depending on supply and demand – but for the consumer (and deals writer!) it's really not very helpful. Sometimes the price shifts by a few dollars or pounds either way, so it' s no big deal, but other times it's in the tens or even hundreds, in which case you'll feel rightly peeved if your bargain proves not to be quite the cracking deal you first thought it was.

But here's how you can beat ’em at their own game. For most products bought during the Black Friday weekend and beyond, Amazon is offering free returns until 31 January, 2025 (IMPORTANT: check this is the case before you click!). So my advice is: if you see a brilliant deal on Amazon, go ahead and buy it. And if you see the price has dropped further later, buy it again (obviously, if it goes up, don't!). And if it subsequently drops even lower, buy it again.

Then, when the Black Friday/Cyber Monday frenzy has died down, simply return any surplus purchases for a full refund. I further advise that you keep the boxes unopened and a careful eye on which product arrived in each shipment, so you don't end up inadvertently returning the one you got for the best price!

Also be aware of the trick Amazon is applying to some deals where you have to click an easy-to-miss tick box to make the advertised saving!

If you've been tempted by the resurgence in film photography over the past few years, you might be scouring the Black Friday camera deals to find yourself a cheap 35mm camera.

If you do, you might be surprised at how many film cameras are actually on sale – and you may be even more surprised at how cheap the cheapest ones are, especially in the Black Friday sales.

Well, if you're looking for a cheap film camera, please take my advice: do not buy the cheapest ones.

What's the problem?

There are some ridiculously low-price 35mm cameras at the moment. Right now, for example, you can buy the Eighties-inspired Dubblefilm Show 35mm Reusable Camera for just $12.99. However, behind its beautiful synthwave-colored casing lie the same problems that beset all these cheap and cheerful cameras.

"It would not advance the very first roll of film I tried," says one verified review on B&H. "After loading, closing the back, the gears immediately started slipping."

This is exactly the problem I've had with super-budget 35mm cameras in the past. They're cheaply built, with components barely more robust than a disposable camera whose life expectancy is one roll of film. And slipping teeth is the most common problem.

"Unfortunately I also had issues with my film slipping off of the plastic teeth, causing me to have to open the camera and overexpose most of my film," concurs another review. "Out of 3 rolls of film I got a total of maybe 20 usable photos."

There are other budget 35mm options, like the $16.99 Kodak M35 and the $21.95 Ilford Sprite 35-II. Honestly, the reviews aren't much better.

What's the solution?

My advice? Don't bother with a 35mm camera that costs less than $25. A roll of Portra 800 costs $17.95 at B&H right now, so you can see how expensive things can get if the camera decides to start acting up. It's a red flag if your camera costs less than your film.

Instead, you should spend a little bit more for a more reliable camera with better build quality that isn't going to eat your film.

The Kodak Ektar H35 is a great little camera that's only $35.96 / £41.95, while the even better-built Ektar H35N is still only $46.39 / £57.79. Better yet, they're both half-frame cameras – so they double the amount of exposures you get from each roll of film. Trust me, that's way better value than buying a $13 camera that stops working – and torpedoes a roll of film at the same time.

If you're shopping the Black Friday camera deals, be careful out there! Amazon has increasingly been using a new device on product listings that could potentially cost you hundreds of dollars.

The new mechanism (which, I'm told, is also being used by a few other retailers) at best makes it easy for you to overlook a discount, and at worst is intentionally designed to trick you into thinking you've got the best deal by obfuscating a further saving.

You might already have bought something via the Amazon website or app without noticing that a discount was being offered.

The company has been adding a very small, very discreet tickbox beneath the price on certain product listings, marked "Coupon" in the US and "Voucher" in the UK. I first noticed this a couple of months ago, and savings that are available only via these tiny checkboxes have ranged from £2 off a USB splitter to $600 off a portable generator.

Here's an example of a listing that I saw during the recent Prime Big Deal Days event:

The voucher checkbox is small and surrounded by colorful text, star ratings and visual elements, and is dwarfed by the giant-font product description – and, crucially, it is positioned away from the purchasing sidebar containing the normal buying options (such as quantity and add to cart).

In this case, a $600 saving could easily be missed by anyone who wasn't sufficiently observant or was simply browsing in a rush. The checkbox is even easier to scroll past on the mobile app, too.

Why not just place the checkbox in the same purchasing sidebar, made obvious in the same way that the other buying options are? More's the point, given that this was in the middle of Amazon's Big Deal Days event, why wasn't this saving automatically applied – you know, on the off chance that someone shopping during a sales event might want to actually save money?

The way the checkbox is obfuscated by page elements during Black Friday feels even more insidious:

Here it feels like the listing is deliberately suggesting to the buyer that they have already got the best offer. "Black Friday Deal" is emblazoned in a red box, with a percentage saving highlighted in big red letters – so at a glance, you would think "Great, I've got my Black Friday saving!"

However, if your eyes creep a little further down, there's the option for a further significant saving – but only if you check the box.

Again, why isn't the discount automatically applied – especially during a huge sales event, when it can be fairly assumed that browsers are consenting to saving as much money as they can? What motive can Amazon have for adding extra steps to the process, other than hoping that the customer will miss the opportunity to save money?

It feels pretty unfair to me. Yes, we should all look very carefully at everything we click on the internet – it is, after all, our own responsibility to read everything on the page. But to me, this seems like caveat emptor in the most miserable, mercenary spirit possible. Sorry you screwed yourself out of getting the best deal. Happy Thanksgiving!

The best Black Friday camera deals are often on last generation’s tech – new models tend to only see slight discounts while previous iterations tend to see a much more startling drop. In the world of cameras, that means shoppers should expect to find some of the best DSLRs sprinkled among the Black Friday ads. But with major camera manufacturers turning their focus to mirrorless cameras, is buying a DSLR even a good investment?

With the notable exception of Pentax, major camera brands from Canon and Nikon to Sony and Panasonic have turned their attention to mirrorless cameras. That shift in focus leaves DSLRs lagging behind in the tech race, without a significant new model arriving in years. That, in turn also means the major camera brands aren’t developing new DSLRs lenses any more either. But, even with just the early Black Friday deals, Nikon’s 45MP DSLR, the D850, is more than $1,000 less than the Z8 in the US, which offers a similar resolution.

I’ve been reviewing the latest cameras for more than a decade, and yet some would say that I made the move over to mirrorless a bit late when I switched just a few short years ago. If the Black Friday price of a DSLR is tempting your wallet, here are six things to consider before clicking that 'add to cart' button.

1) Mirrorless cameras are easier to learn on

The lack of a mirror meant mirrorless cameras couldn’t bounce the view from the lens up to the viewfinder, necessitating the invention of the electronic viewfinder. Like a mini LCD screen, electronic viewfinders display what the sensor is seeing without the DSLR’s mirrors.

One of the key differences in the electronic type of viewfinder is that it displays exactly what the sensor is seeing. That means if your settings are going to capture a photo that’s too bright, you’ll see that in the viewfinder whereas in a DSLR, you’d have to pay attention to the meter to recognize that your settings were off.

The ability to see what you are about to capture before you capture it is a key advantage if you're looking for a camera for beginners. That feature also extends to things like colors, including enabling you to see the viewfinder in black-and-white if you want to take a black-and-white picture.

2) Mirrorless cameras have key features like eye detection autofocus

As a portrait photographer, one of the key reasons enticing me to trade in my Nikon D850 for a mirrorless camera is the eye detection autofocus. With a DSLR, you either leave it to chance and hope the auto area AF selects the right subject, or use the joystick to move the focus point over to the proper point.

Mirrorless cameras are a bit smarter than that. They can recognize eyes and automatically focus on them, for both people and animals. Some models recognize more than just eyes and can automatically detect vehicles and other commonly photographed subjects.

3) Mirrorless lenses are a better long-term investment

The decision to switch to mirrorless was actually predicated by a more innocent idea: I wanted a new lens. I didn’t want to spend four figures on a high-end portrait lens, then switch to mirrorless a year later and have to replace all my lenses.

Mirrorless cameras are a better long-term investment. With few companies continuing to make DSLRs, the odds are that when you need to upgrade five years down the road, you won’t be buying a DSLR again unless it's used. That means you’ll likely need to replace your lenses.

Now, Canon and Nikon have adapters that allow their DSLR lenses to work on mirrorless. But while the performance and features on a mirrorless camera are quite different, when it comes to image quality, the most noticeable difference comes from the lenses and not the camera body.

For example, the best Nikon Z lenses tend to be sharper than the F-Mount optics that I formerly had for my D850. Of course, noticeable is an opinionated term, but I noticed a significant difference in the sharpness of Nikon’s mirrorless optics over the older DSLR lenses. Which means that, while you can use adapted DSLR lenses, you’ll likely get the best results from using native optics.

4) DSLRs still take good photographs

Mirrorless cameras may be the most technically advanced and the best long-term investment, but their existence doesn’t automatically make DSLRs garbage. Many award-winning images have been taken with DSLRs, like this one taken with a 12-year-old camera and a kit lens that won $200,000.

I can’t scroll through Instagram and immediately pinpoint which images were taken with a DSLR and which ones were taken with a mirrorless camera. Nor, in fact, do I care what camera captured the photograph unless the image itself is some sort of technical miracle not previously possible.

It is, however, rather silly to spend thousands on the most technically advanced camera and lens to just put nylons over the lens for a “vintage look.” If that intentionally blurry, softer look describes your style to a T, then why would you spend more money on the newest gear when you want an older, more classic feel?

5) DSLRs are often – but not always – more affordable

When DSLRs were king, I could easily find a basic starter DSLR during a sale event like Black Friday for under $500. Only a few very basic mirrorless cameras sit under $1,000, like the Canon EOS R100 or the Sony ZV-1F. DSLRs tend to be much more affordable, not to mention the wealth of good used lenses available as photographers switch over their systems to mirrorless.

But, don’t assume that the DSLR price is the better deal. The D850 is around $1,000 less than the mirrorless Z8, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. But the Canon 5D Mark IV with a 24-105mm lens is only $300 less than the R6 II bundled with an RF-mount 24-105mm lens, making the older tech far less tempting.

6) With retro tech trending, photographers shouldn’t feel pressured to buy the latest gear

DSLRs are no longer the most technically advanced camera systems, nor are they the best long-term investment with few brands paying them much attention. But when 2000s-era compacts are trending, does using outdated tech really matter? I just brought an old film camera I bought at a garage sale for $10 along to a portrait shoot. The camera that you choose has everything to do with the technical quality of the resulting image, but very little to do with the intrinsic and artistic value.

Should you buy a DSLR during the Black Friday sales? If you have the cash, mirrorless cameras tend to be easier to learn and you won’t need to replace your collection of lenses if you decide to upgrade in the future. If the price difference between the DSLR and mirrorless is minimal, the mirrorless is the best decision. But if the price difference is steep and your budget means the choice is to either buy a DSLR or continue using a smartphone, buy the DSLR.

Did the annual Black Friday rush in November capsize camera shipments in October?

CIPA (the Camera & Imaging Products Association) has released its latest report, providing an overview of digital camera sales and shipments over the past year in comparison with the previous two. Shipments of both interchangeable and lens-integrated cameras were plotted on a graph showing how the market reacted in 2023. 

The health of the digital camera market had been recovering for most of the year, after being decimated during the pandemic. However, CIPA's results show that a major dip in October / November has significantly skewed what would have been an improved and steady year. Could this be an effect of the ever-increasing popularity of Black Friday, and people holding out for better deals? Or were camera manufacturers under so much demand that shipments stalled? 

In April and May 2023, shipments of interchangeable lens cameras were greatly increased over the same period in previous years, before steadying to corresponding levels from June to October. October / November, however, saw a significant decrease. 

This may be a result of Black Friday, a commercial promotion at the end of November aimed at providing the best deals before the holiday season. The dip in shipments could be due to people holding off buying cameras in October and waiting for the perfect Black Friday deal at the end of November. It will be interesting to see the data for December, to see if there was an influx of shipments over the extended Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

On the other hand, another possibility for the decline is the lack of new releases towards the end of the year. The last major launch was the Fujifilm GFX 100 II in September, and that isn't exactly your everyday consumer camera!

The data shows that fixed (integrated) lens camera shipments appear to have been a lot lower in 2023 than in 2022 and 2021, although they were consistent throughout the year. Fixed-lens models, particularly some of the best compact cameras, have been growing in popularity in recent years, so much so that they have exceeded expectations – and cameras like the Fujifilm X100V are still hard to get. I expect this data to increase over 2024, as fixed lens cameras such as the successors to the X100V and Ricoh GR III are rumored.

Among interchangeable lens cameras, the 86,575 DSLRs shipped were vastly overshadowed by the 415,342 mirrorless cameras. The figures show that DSLR shipments are down a whopping 50%, seeing the fastest growth for mirrorless cameras so far, as the drawn-out death of the DSLR continues.

It is useful to get an insight into how the camera market is behaving, as it provides a gauge of the health of the medium – and to show recovery during a global cost of living crisis is encouraging. With many camera manufacturers rumored to be releasing new models in 2024, I can envision market growth, especially with many of these rumored releases being new flagship models. However, an increase in sales may also mean an increase in shipping times!

It might not be something I mention at lot at Digital Camera World, but I love to play with Lego. I also love to lecture people about the correct plural for multiple Lego pieces (hint: it's not "Legos") – but that's not important right now.

Lego has done a brilliant job of keeping atop the building toys game, even after the patent crucial to the company's original success expired. The key has been partnerships with major brands that appeal to all ages (I'm sure I'm not the only grown man who craves a Lego Millennium Falcon... am I?) 

Anyway this year, Lego has partnered with the top of the Disney brand tree to create a 811-piece set that represents an iconic movie camera from the golden age of cinema (and the birth of Disney). There are several tweaks for those in the know, of course – the film reels form the zeroes of the number '100', while a specially created reel of film depicts Lego versions of classic Disney characters.

Look closely and you'll see scenes from The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, and The Little Mermaid amongst many other animated classics. As if that weren't enough you can play with (or prevent your children from playing with) real Lego minifigures of Bambi, Mickey and Minie Mouse (both in Black & White), Walt Disney himself, and Dumbo. Lego Walt can also sit inside the camera housing with his sketch pad and animate away, revealed when you open a hinged panel on the side of the camera – a nice little secret to show your friends.

Let's be fair, it is a wonderful gift for Disney fans, Lego fans, Camera fans, Cinema lovers, and any combination. So realizing it'd be hard to find nearer Christmas I thought I'd check it out now and I discovered that a certain well-known river-themed retailer had run out (though had a few 'other sellers).

The first shipping date I saw was in 2024. Then I looked again, just now, and things have already got better. Moreover, I also spotted a couple of leftover Black Friday prices...

As they say, time and tide wait for no one and the Black Friday shopping season is on its last legs now. Nearly every retailer will end their sales on Cyber Monday, which is today, December 1.

As I expected, I'm not seeing a lot of changes in prices between the 'early' deals and what's on offer right now during the Black Friday weekend. Stocks, however, are another issue. So if you have your heart set on something, just go for it if the price fits your budget.

While I've done my best to find the lowest prices on each of them, I've also listed offers that don't seem like a huge discount, but trust me when I say that they're still worth considering even with a small saving.

And don't forget to take advantage of any cashback offer the camera manufacturers are offering right now. Nearly all of them do their summer cashbacks around this time, so you could end up pocketing more than you pay right now.

When will Black Friday camera deals in 2025 start?

This year, the official Black Friday sale period is from November 28 through to Monday, December 1, 2025 (Cyber Monday), and some of the best camera deals won't be available after that date. However, Black Friday camera deals in Australia start about two weeks ahead of that date, so start checking retailers around November 17.

While most camera retailers usually stick with their best offers during the three week period that includes the actual sale, some can drop the prices further during Cyber Weekend proper, so you might want to wait till November 28 to see how much you can actually save.

When is Black Friday 2025?

As we've just mentioned, Black Friday this year falls on Friday, November 28. That means Cyber Monday will be on December 1.

That's still a few weeks away, giving you plenty of time to figure out what you'd like to get – a new camera for beginners, the best instant camera perhaps, or just a lens or two. You'll get nearly two weeks of the best prices on photography gear, but don't dally as stocks may be low and you could miss out.

Where to find Black Friday camera deals

Pretty much every Aussie retailer, whether a specialist camera store or a more general tech store, will be offering great discounts during Black Friday. Many of them will even price match or try and outdo the competition, so you may get lucky pitting one retailer against the other to bag the best bargain.

Chances are you won’t need to leave your home to snag a great Black Friday offer. Most in-store discounts will be offered online by the major retailers, so all you’ll need to do is keep your credit card handy and shop from your couch.

Before that, though, we’d recommend you have your shopping list ready and figure out what your budget is. Doing some research on prices now will help you determine whether a Black Friday offer is actually worth it or not when the sale finally begins.

Black Friday 2025: Shopping tips

Film photography has made a resurgence, particularly with the younger generation who grew up with digital cameras. While it's possible to pick up a vintage film camera on eBay for a few hundred dollars, it takes a little knowledge beforehand to make the most of cameras such as the Nikon FM and the Canon F-1.

For anyone who's keen on experimenting first before investing in a manual film camera that costs more, the best place to start would be with a newer model that's easily available and cheaper. A lot cheaper!

The popularity of film photography has seen the likes of the Kodak Ektar E35 half-frame cameras launch recently, and there are a few other Kodak point-and-shoot film cameras to try too. These have been designed for the younger generation, available in fun colours and with simple, easy-to-use controls. 

It's important to remember that these are Kodak-branded but aren't actually made by Kodak. The famous camera brand licenses its name to other companies who manufacture and sell the cameras, with Kodak's seal of approval, so you know you're getting a good product.

While most of these are already quite affordable, there's up to 35% off some of these Kodak film cameras on Amazon right now for Black Friday. For example, you can pick up a Kodak M35 for just AU$32 or the aforementioned Kodak Ektar H35 in different colourways for as low as AU$61.

Kodak Ektar H35 deal

The Kodak Ektar H35 is a fun point-and-shoot film camera that divides each frame of a roll of 35mm film into two. So, instead of producing 36 images measuring 24x36 mm, you'll get 72 images measuring 24x18 mm each. 

That means you always have to remember to shoot in portrait mode (or vertically) rather than in landscape (or horizontally). And this can be tricky, so the viewfinder provides a helpful vertically-oriented grid to help you frame your shot.

Available in different colours, the Ektar H35 exudes retro charm in its design and it's a fun, affordable camera that's great for getting more value out of your roll of 35mm film.

Kodak M35 deal

Also taking 35mm film, the Kodak M35 produces full-frame shots, so you'll get 36 frames from a single roll. Where the Ektar H35 half-frame camera features a 22mm lens, the M35 has a 31mm fixed lens with an aperture of f/10.

Unlike the retro-looking Ektar H35, the M35 is rather plasticky. It feels more like a disposable camera than a reloadable one, but you will get better images from the M35 than from one of Kodak's disposable cameras.

It, too, is a point-and-shoot, with fixed exposure settings, although you can toggle the flash on or off, depending on the ambient light conditions. Note, however, that the flash needs a AAA battery, although the camera itself does not. So you will need to remember to turn the flash off after use or the battery can drain if left on, adding to ongoing costs.

Other Kodak Black Friday deals

There are a few other Kodak camera models being discounted on Amazon right now, although the above two is our pick of the best Kodak film cameras. 

If you'd like other alternatives, a Kodak Reto 3D film camera is available for AU$107, down from AU$150. As the name suggests, this camera produces 3D images, which can be a bit of fun. It features a triple-lens system that captures the subject in three slightly different angles to form three half-frame shots.

If you're not too keen on experimenting with 3D images, then the Kodak Reto Ultra Wide & Slim 35mm camera is also discounted, with prices starting from AU$36 (down from AU$55). This fun and lightweight camera has an ultra-wide 22mm lens, hence the name.

There are Kodak instant cameras and printers also seeing a price drop on Amazon, if you'd rather not experiment with film.

Unfortunately Amazon isn't offering any significant discounts on film rolls, but you might be able to pick up something for under AU$40.

The DJI Mini 2 SE was designed to be the camera drone that anyone could afford – and because of its keen price, it is a brilliant option for beginner pilots. But now it has dropped in cost even more in Amazon's Early Black Friday deals – making this one of the best Black Friday deals we have seen.

It also means you can get a drone from the market leader, DJI, with an excellent reputation for quality for the kind of money usually associated with less reputable brands!

The DJI Mini 2 SE lets any drone pilot of any ability take stunning aerial videos at up to 2.7K resolution at 30 frames per second, while also being able to take 12-megapixel photos. If that sounds like less resolution than some, the Mini 2 SE has a 3-axis gimbal which makes the results shine above many others.

As the name suggests, the Mini 2 is a refined version of DJI's first low-cost offering, the Mini SE (which we also praised in our full Mini SE review). The already excellent airframe didn't change significantly, but a more recent controller, used by others drones in the DJI family, gave even better range and reliability. 

The Mini 2 also beats the older Mini 2 on price, yet still keeps much of its functionality with the same 36mph flight speed, up to 6.2-mile OcuSync 2.0 video transmission, and more. (Admittedly there is now a Mini 3, but that is a bit more spendy!)

The Mini 2 SE also delivers convenience, making it easy and fun for beginners and experts alike – and falls under the 0.55lb weight limit that triggers more paperwork and regulation for the owner. 

QuickShots and panorama intelligent pre-programmed flight modes allow for pro results with just one tap (which look amazing on your social, and are easily exported using the DJI app). Even with its lightweight frame, the Mini 2 SE is safe to use with robust wind resistance and return-to-home functionality.

Whilst the basic AU$478 kit at Amazon is an absolute bargain, do consider investing a bit more in the Fly More combo kit for AU$628 (also discounted in Amazon's sale) which adds in some useful accessories (although you could always buy these later).

Until Fujifilm decided to make medium format photography a little more attainable for the average enthusiast or hobbyist, it was typically the purview of professionals for studio work, with the price point of most cameras – and their associated lenses – far out of reach for the everyperson.

However, if you've ever been keen on getting your hands on an excellent medium format camera, now would be a very good time indeed, with the 50MP Fujifilm GFX 50S II available for as low as AU$3,375 after a cashback redemption offer. That makes this one of the best Black Friday camera deals we've seen so far.

While you can pick up the GFX 50S II at any authorised retailer and then claim the cashback, the best price at the time of writing is via Ted's Cameras. The body is discounted down to AU$4,675 from AU$5,499.95, which will stack with a deal on Fujifilm's cashback offer page, where you can register your purchase before January 10, 2024 to claim a whopping AU$1,300 back. And that brings the final price of this amazing camera down to a mere AU$3,374.96 for the body only, which is the best price we've seen to date. It smashes this year's EOFY offer of AU$4,199 right out of the park!

Medium format cameras have historically been big and bulky, but Fujifilm has redesigned its new GFX range to be more DSLR-like, with easy-to-use dials and buttons. 

If you're unfamiliar with a medium format sensor, it's 1.7 times bigger than a full-frame 35mm sensor. So the cameras's light gathering capabilities and depth of field are significantly superior to full-framers. There's a certain 'look' that photographers talk about when referring to medium format, and you'll get that here. 

The GFX 50S II's 51.4MP sensor produces some amazing stills, and you can get 200MP high-res shots too using the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode. While the 117-point autofocus system is very capable, medium format cameras can feel a little sluggish in comparison to the latest mirrorless cameras... but then these large-sensor shooters were never designed for fast capture.

They were also not designed for 4K video or fast continuous shooting speeds. So if it's really beautiful stills you're after, it doesn't get cheaper or better than the Fujifilm GFX 50S II at this price.

More GFX Black Friday offers

The GFX 50S II might be the best Black Friday offer from Fujifilm, but it's not the only camera that gets a cashback discount. The Fujifilm GFX100S comes with a AU$1,300 cashback offer when purchased from an authorised dealer, with the best price at the time of writing coming via CameraPro where the cashback drops the price down to AU$7,199. That's a 100MP medium format camera... but it also costs you a lot more for the extra pixels.

The cashback also includes XF and GF lenses, with some of the best prices – after cashback of course – possible by shopping from CameraPro's Fujifilm promo sale.

While Fujifilm's cashback offer ends with registrations by January 10, 2024, the discounts at authorised retailers likely won't last past Cyber Monday on November 27, so don't dally.

People ask me the same question every year during Black Friday season: should I look for the best deal on the latest camera, or the best deal even if it's an old one?

It's a good question. Obviously the best Black Friday camera deals are found on bodies that are a couple of years old – so you'll be saving less money on a new camera and saving more money on an older camera. 

Is it false economy, though, to buy an older camera even if it's cheaper? 

There are two ways to approach this question. If you are looking for a specific camera for a specific reason, then clearly you want the best possible saving on it – regardless of what other bargains are on offer.

An example might be the Canon EOS R5, which you might want because you specifically want to shoot 8K. Which means it doesn't matter how much money Amazon slashes off the Panasonic S5 II or how cheap Walmart sells the Nikon Z5, because neither of them shoot 8K. 

So if you absolutely need a particular camera then, yes, you should stick to finding the best deal on it. (For reference, there's $500 off the R5 in the US and an incredible £1,000 off the R5 in the UK right now). 

However, if you just want a new camera, you can potentially save so much more money by keeping your options open.

Let's take the Sony A7R V as an example. It's new and it's amazing, but do you really need it? It's got a 61MP sensor and clever AF, but the Sony A7R IV has basically the same thing with its 60.2MP sensor and almost-as-clever AF – the only difference is, it came out in 2019 so it's far more affordable. 

We tend to think that "newer" equals "better", but that isn't always the case. My colleague Adam recently lamented this very point, noting that the GoPro Hero 12 is actually a downgrade on the Hero 11. I'd actually recommend buying the older model not just because it's cheaper, but because it's functionally better. 

So there you have it. Newer is always more expensive, but newer doesn't always mean better. And older may be cheaper, but older and cheaper don't always mean inferior. 

We all want the shiny new thing. But don't be swayed by what you want; shop for what you need. Because at the end of the day, the only false economy is saving money on something that isn't right for you.

Ever since the Nikon Z8 mirrorless was announced in May this year, I've been keen on picking this stunning snapper up, but its RRP of AU$6,999 for the body alone was a tad too much for my budget (even as someone who writes about cameras for a living).

However, there's now a massive discount that will save me AU$1,000 via Aussie retailer CameraPro on what is arguably the best Nikon camera to date – so I'm sorely tempted to jump at the opportunity before it passes me by. If you've been keen on upgrading to a new pro camera – and one that's supremely powerful and produces top-notch stills and video – you may not want to miss this opportunity either, as there's no guarantee there'll be a better offer when Black Friday camera deals officially come calling on November 24.

The Z8 body is discounted by AU$700 on its product page at CameraPro, but add the camera to your cart and there's an additional AU$300 that gets taken off automatically at checkout for a total saving of AU$1,000 – no discount code needed. However, this additional AU$300 voucher offer is only available until November 19.

Why I'm buying the Nikon Z8

Buying the Nikon Z8 would mean I'm changing systems entirely. I've been using Canon's cameras and lenses for years, but the Z8 brings some flagship features that frankly has me bowled over. And as a wildlife and landscape photographer, these features truly are too tempting to pass up. It's so good, that my TechRadar colleagues who tested it gave it a full five stars in our Nikon Z8 review.

The Z8 essentially a miniaturised Nikon Z9 and without the same excessive price tag of the pro-level sports camera, so I get portability here, although it is a little chunkier than the Z7/Z6 bodies. I'm used to the heft of a Canon DSLR however, so this doesn't  faze me. What I really like about it over the older Nikon Z-series full-frame cameras is its button layout that makes it more intuitive than before.

It uses the same stacked 45.7MP CMOS sensor as the Z9, which is capable of some blistering fast readouts. This makes a mechanical shutter redundant and, like the revolutionary Z9, there's only an electronic shutter here. That means I'll have a maximum shutter speed of 1/32,000 of a second compared to 1/8,000 second on most other premium cameras out there.

As a wildlife photographer, the Z8's burst speeds of up to 120fps are utterly mind-boggling and one of its most tempting aspects. Sure, at this speed I can only capture 11MP low-res stills, but I'll still get 45.7MP images with 30fps – which is already quite a lot – with autofocus and autoexposure engaged between frames.

To match, its buffer memory can save over 1,000 RAW frames at 20fps to the memory card before it stutters, and it won't stop saving JPEGs at 30fps till the card is full. 

I will admit that I prefer Canon's current autofocus system, but I'll be happy with the 493-point phase-detection AF system on the Z8. 

While its video capabilities are definitely overkill for me, it's capable of up to 8.3K/60p 12-bit internal recording in both N-RAW and ProRES RAW HQ formats.

The battery life on the Z8 is, perhaps, the only reason I've got any hesitation – it uses the same pack found in the Z7 bodies, so it tops out at about 275 shots. You could argue that I can use the savings from this deal to pick up an extra battery or two and a grip, but I'll also need to set aside some moolah to buy Nikkor lenses after giving up my current Canon ones.

Still, I can't allow this AU$1,000 to pass me by. 

RIP my savings.

Is Cyber Monday as good as Black Friday? More and more people ask that question every year, especially as both American sales events take root across the globe. 

Once upon a time, the two events served very different purposes. You'd find the best Black Friday camera deals, for example, at bricks and mortar stores like Walmart and Best Buy (usually accompanied by news broadcast-bating footage of shoppers stampeding each other while battling to grab physical products). 

By contrast, the best Cyber Monday camera deals would be found exclusively at online e-tailers (accompanied by crashing websites rather than crushing crowds) such as Amazon and Etsy.

You see, Black Friday marks the unofficial start of the Christmas shopping season, since it takes place the day after Thanksgiving. And, in order to enable online stores to compete (oh, how times change), Cyber Monday was established in 2005 to promote internet shopping.

However, from single-day sales events, we now have sales bonanzas that seem to envelop the entire week either side of the two days.

Back in the day, you'd have to physically go to Walmart on Friday to get Black Friday prices because they were in-store only. And if you went there in person on Monday, you wouldn't be able to get Cyber Monday prices because they were web-only.

Now, it's largely all just a free for all. Black Friday pricing is the same in a physical store as it is online, and many stores offer Cyber Monday deals even if they don't have a website! 

All of which begs the question… which is better? Are Cyber Monday deals the same as Black Friday? It's not quite that straightforward a question to answer. 

By and large, the best bargains and most headline-grabbing offers take place on Black Friday – such as Verizon's mindboggling deal where you can buy an iPhone 14 Pro and get a free iPad, Apple Watch and Beats headphones. 

The thing is, though, Black Friday offers increasingly run all the way through Cyber Monday, as the two events become less separate selling occasions and more punctuation points on the same extended sales parade. 

Many retailers do hold back specific deals for Cyber Monday that aren't available on Black Friday. Sometimes these are as good as or better than the Friday deals, sometimes they're not. Sometimes stores slash prices a bit more to clear inventory that didn't move over the weekend. Sometimes you've waited too long and you miss the best prices.

So, there's no hard and fast answer. Our best advice is, if you see a good price on something you're interested in, jump on the offers right away! Trust us, you don't want something to sell out because you're waiting for the price to drop even more!

Find the best Black Friday camera phone deals

1. Buy the phone outright

It can be easier to get a good deal on a phone if you buy the device outright, rather than from a mobile provider on a long contract where you have to pay a monthly fee. This is what you'd call an unlocked phone.

There are plenty of seemingly worthwhile trade-in offers being bandied about from the likes of Apple and Samsung, but these aren't always as good as they first appear, as they require you to trade in an already quite good phone, while the older devices you might actually want to replace will fetch a much lower price than advertised.

The best phone deals – or any deals for that matter – should tell you the exact price that you're going to pay upfront.

2. Buy direct

So, rather than buying a camera phone from a network provider, you can make savings by shopping directly with sites like Amazon, or by going straight to the manufacturer themselves.

For example, we're keeping an eye on Google's Black Friday sale which starts on November 17. We expect to see Google offer its latest Pixel phones at a discount, including the Google Pixel 6a – an amazing budget camera phone that still offers some of the latest features.

3. Know what phone you want to buy

We're only halfway through the Black Friday / Cyber Monday weekend and I've already spent $3,896.12.

And, with the Cyber Monday camera deals still throwing up more and more ridiculous savings, that's a figure that could easily continue to rack up before Tuesday rolls around and I finally put my credit card away. 

It's a bit of a joke among the DCW team that I'm addicted to buying camera gear. And it's hard to argue; I did, after all, spend $300 in October importing a Pokémon-themed version of the Canon Ivy Rec from Japan – a camera that only costs $49, if you just buy one in the States that isn't yellow and doesn't have a Pikachu on it. 

So, admittedly, I have a bit of an issue. However, in years past I haven't approached Black Friday and Cyber Monday with a shopping list in mind; if there were any ridiculously good deals, then cool, I'd buy something. (Last year I ended up buying a dishwasher, but nothing for my camera bag.) 

This year, though, was a little different. There were a couple of things that I knew I wanted, and that my Spidey Sense told me were going to be on offer, so I bided my time. I waited with ninja-like patience to see if the deals rolled in – and, sure enough, they did. So what did I get? 

Well, amazingly, I spent almost four thousand dollars on just three things. That's what being a Canon EOS R5 owner gets you… 

Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM

This is, hands down, the best portrait lens I've ever used. You could make the argument that a great 135mm might have it outclassed (though if it does, don't tell me as I can't afford anything else right now), but it's certainly the best 85mm lens out there.

I actually intended to buy this lens last year, before Canon teased me with the R5 and I knew I'd be shelling out for that first. It was a toss-up between this and the Canon RF 85mm f/1.2L USM DS, the Defocus Smoothing version of the lens that renders unfathomably smooth bokeh. 

Thankfully, while this lens is an eye-watering £2,799 in the UK, I took advantage of the double cashback in the Canon Cyber Monday deals to save £400. Fun fact: I'm also REALLY tempted to buy the Canon RF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM, since that's got a crazy cashback offer as well… 

Moment CineBloom diffusion filters

If you're anything like me, you love digital cameras and modern lenses for how crisp, clean, sharp and precise they are. However, you also long for the days when cameras and lenses had real character. 

I love nothing more than whacking an old Helios or Super Takumar lens on the front of my camera because modern lenses just don't have that softness to the skin, that smoothness to edges, that haze and bloom surrounding bright areas of light. These are, technically, imperfections and shortcomings, of course – part of the reason that 85mm f/1.2L lens is so expensive is precisely because it is so clinical. 

Still, I miss that character, that soul, that cinematic richness of my old film lenses. Which is why I picked up a pair of these brilliant Moment CineBloom diffusion filters – both in 20% strength (because I ain't buying these things to be subtle), one 62mm to fit a couple of lenses for my Olympus cameras, and one 82mm to fit my new RF 85mm. Will I be buying anything else over the next couple of days? Well, I've already got an Xbox Series X, but if there's a PS5 in stock in the Sony Cyber Monday deals, hmm…
