Did the annual Black Friday rush in November capsize camera shipments in October?

CIPA (the Camera & Imaging Products Association) has released its latest report, providing an overview of digital camera sales and shipments over the past year in comparison with the previous two. Shipments of both interchangeable and lens-integrated cameras were plotted on a graph showing how the market reacted in 2023. 

The health of the digital camera market had been recovering for most of the year, after being decimated during the pandemic. However, CIPA's results show that a major dip in October / November has significantly skewed what would have been an improved and steady year. Could this be an effect of the ever-increasing popularity of Black Friday, and people holding out for better deals? Or were camera manufacturers under so much demand that shipments stalled? 

In April and May 2023, shipments of interchangeable lens cameras were greatly increased over the same period in previous years, before steadying to corresponding levels from June to October. October / November, however, saw a significant decrease. 

This may be a result of Black Friday, a commercial promotion at the end of November aimed at providing the best deals before the holiday season. The dip in shipments could be due to people holding off buying cameras in October and waiting for the perfect Black Friday deal at the end of November. It will be interesting to see the data for December, to see if there was an influx of shipments over the extended Black Friday and Cyber Monday period.

On the other hand, another possibility for the decline is the lack of new releases towards the end of the year. The last major launch was the Fujifilm GFX 100 II in September, and that isn't exactly your everyday consumer camera!

The data shows that fixed (integrated) lens camera shipments appear to have been a lot lower in 2023 than in 2022 and 2021, although they were consistent throughout the year. Fixed-lens models, particularly some of the best compact cameras, have been growing in popularity in recent years, so much so that they have exceeded expectations – and cameras like the Fujifilm X100V are still hard to get. I expect this data to increase over 2024, as fixed lens cameras such as the successors to the X100V and Ricoh GR III are rumored.

Among interchangeable lens cameras, the 86,575 DSLRs shipped were vastly overshadowed by the 415,342 mirrorless cameras. The figures show that DSLR shipments are down a whopping 50%, seeing the fastest growth for mirrorless cameras so far, as the drawn-out death of the DSLR continues.

It is useful to get an insight into how the camera market is behaving, as it provides a gauge of the health of the medium – and to show recovery during a global cost of living crisis is encouraging. With many camera manufacturers rumored to be releasing new models in 2024, I can envision market growth, especially with many of these rumored releases being new flagship models. However, an increase in sales may also mean an increase in shipping times!

A few years ago my new year's resolution was to make my photography business more legitimate. I printed business cards, built a website and started creating a more professional online presence. However, the last few years have been tough on everyone; jobs have dwindled and more and more businesses are going for the do-it-yourself approach when it comes to photography. With that in mind, I can't justify splashing out almost £200 to keep my Squarespace site running, so I'm looking into alternatives. 

The thought of building a whole new website from scratch is daunting. It took me ages to build my Squarespace site and create something that not only looked great but reflected who I am as a photographer as well as the services I offer. Squarespace made it easy to design each page, add text boxes, pictures, quotes, videos and even embed my Instagram feed so switching to an alternative isn't an easy decision but it's a necessary one. 

When I first signed up to Squarespace I used my brother's student discount which gave me 50% off plus a free domain for the first year so it worked out at just £108 for the whole year including the domain. Since I opted for the business account it cost £216 in the second year plus £19.20 for the domain. After a quiet year selling prints, I switched back to a personal account in my third year costing me a £175 in total but that's still significantly more than I initially paid. 

I love the look of my Squarespace site, the website builder is easy to navigate, everything comes together quickly and within a few hours, you have a website ready to launch. Even if you've never built or designed a website before, there are lots of templates and page layouts but that's the case with almost all website builders, not just Squarespace – as we covered in How to build a brilliant photo website.

Most of my work comes through existing clients, word of mouth or Instagram which begs the question, why bother having a website at all when Instagram is free? I think having your work neatly organized and displayed on a website makes you seem more legitimate. I can describe who I am, the packages I offer, how much I charge and provide client testimonials. While the number of jobs I get through my website may have decreased, the jobs I have got over the last few years have paid for it so I do think it’s worth having one – I just think it’s time to look for a cheaper often. 

Format and Zenfolio are both currently offering 50% off all plans so you can create a website from as little as $3.50/£2 or $5/£4 respectively when you pay annually. The basic packages are better suited to photographers just starting who don't require huge amounts of storage space, don't need an online store and just need the basic web pages (about section, contact, gallery etc). If your business is more established, a pro or pro plus subscription may be better suited as it gives you access to a personalized email, more storage, a selling platform, plus video hosting. 

I appreciate that after this year the price on both Format and Zenfolio will increase, but the basic Format site will still cost me a lot less than Squarespace. Creating a new website every year isn't an ideal solution but it can save money and a freshly designed website might just bring in a few extra clients!

The best photo editing software will help you get your photos in order and optimized for web so you don't upload huge files.

It might not be something I mention at lot at Digital Camera World, but I love to play with Lego. I also love to lecture people about the correct plural for multiple Lego pieces (hint: it's not "Legos") – but that's not important right now.

Lego has done a brilliant job of keeping atop the building toys game, even after the patent crucial to the company's original success expired. The key has been partnerships with major brands that appeal to all ages (I'm sure I'm not the only grown man who craves a Lego Millennium Falcon... am I?) 

Anyway this year, Lego has partnered with the top of the Disney brand tree to create a 811-piece set that represents an iconic movie camera from the golden age of cinema (and the birth of Disney). There are several tweaks for those in the know, of course – the film reels form the zeroes of the number '100', while a specially created reel of film depicts Lego versions of classic Disney characters.

Look closely and you'll see scenes from The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, and The Little Mermaid amongst many other animated classics. As if that weren't enough you can play with (or prevent your children from playing with) real Lego minifigures of Bambi, Mickey and Minie Mouse (both in Black & White), Walt Disney himself, and Dumbo. Lego Walt can also sit inside the camera housing with his sketch pad and animate away, revealed when you open a hinged panel on the side of the camera – a nice little secret to show your friends.

Let's be fair, it is a wonderful gift for Disney fans, Lego fans, Camera fans, Cinema lovers, and any combination. So realizing it'd be hard to find nearer Christmas I thought I'd check it out now and I discovered that a certain well-known river-themed retailer had run out (though had a few 'other sellers).

The first shipping date I saw was in 2024. Then I looked again, just now, and things have already got better. Moreover, I also spotted a couple of leftover Black Friday prices...

It's best results are when the lighting conditions are great as it still struggles in low-light, as has every other GoPro before it. Film photography has made a resurgence, particularly with the younger generation who grew up with digital cameras. While it's possible to pick up a vintage film camera on eBay for a few hundred dollars, it takes a little knowledge beforehand to make the most of cameras such as the Nikon FM and the Canon F-1.

For anyone who's keen on experimenting first before investing in a manual film camera that costs more, the best place to start would be with a newer model that's easily available and cheaper. A lot cheaper!

The popularity of film photography has seen the likes of the Kodak Ektar E35 half-frame cameras launch recently, and there are a few other Kodak point-and-shoot film cameras to try too. These have been designed for the younger generation, available in fun colours and with simple, easy-to-use controls. 

It's important to remember that these are Kodak-branded but aren't actually made by Kodak. The famous camera brand licenses its name to other companies who manufacture and sell the cameras, with Kodak's seal of approval, so you know you're getting a good product.

While most of these are already quite affordable, there's up to 35% off some of these Kodak film cameras on Amazon right now for Black Friday. For example, you can pick up a Kodak M35 for just AU$32 or the aforementioned Kodak Ektar H35 in different colourways for as low as AU$61.

Kodak Ektar H35 deal

The Kodak Ektar H35 is a fun point-and-shoot film camera that divides each frame of a roll of 35mm film into two. So, instead of producing 36 images measuring 24x36 mm, you'll get 72 images measuring 24x18 mm each. 

That means you always have to remember to shoot in portrait mode (or vertically) rather than in landscape (or horizontally). And this can be tricky, so the viewfinder provides a helpful vertically-oriented grid to help you frame your shot.

Available in different colours, the Ektar H35 exudes retro charm in its design and it's a fun, affordable camera that's great for getting more value out of your roll of 35mm film.

Kodak M35 deal

Also taking 35mm film, the Kodak M35 produces full-frame shots, so you'll get 36 frames from a single roll. Where the Ektar H35 half-frame camera features a 22mm lens, the M35 has a 31mm fixed lens with an aperture of f/10.

Unlike the retro-looking Ektar H35, the M35 is rather plasticky. It feels more like a disposable camera than a reloadable one, but you will get better images from the M35 than from one of Kodak's disposable cameras.

It, too, is a point-and-shoot, with fixed exposure settings, although you can toggle the flash on or off, depending on the ambient light conditions. Note, however, that the flash needs a AAA battery, although the camera itself does not. So you will need to remember to turn the flash off after use or the battery can drain if left on, adding to ongoing costs.

Other Kodak Black Friday deals

There are a few other Kodak camera models being discounted on Amazon right now, although the above two is our pick of the best Kodak film cameras. 

If you'd like other alternatives, a Kodak Reto 3D film camera is available for AU$107, down from AU$150. As the name suggests, this camera produces 3D images, which can be a bit of fun. It features a triple-lens system that captures the subject in three slightly different angles to form three half-frame shots.

If you're not too keen on experimenting with 3D images, then the Kodak Reto Ultra Wide & Slim 35mm camera is also discounted, with prices starting from AU$36 (down from AU$55). This fun and lightweight camera has an ultra-wide 22mm lens, hence the name.

There are Kodak instant cameras and printers also seeing a price drop on Amazon, if you'd rather not experiment with film.

Unfortunately Amazon isn't offering any significant discounts on film rolls, but you might be able to pick up something for under AU$40.

It's the tripod everybody has wanted since the day it was announced – and it's just received a massive discount in the Black Friday camera deals.

The Peak Design Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod has been slashed by $178, its lowest price ever! The super-compact, lightweight design is like no other tripod I've ever seen before, which is just one of the reasons it earned the top spot in our best travel tripods buying guide. 

It's hard to get that excited over tripods, but when Peak Design first released its travel tripod I was very impressed. It might have taken four years to design, but the end result is truly a work of genius. With three flattened legs rather than the standard round ones you find on most tripods for photography, it packs down much smaller than any other travel tripod and can extend to a maximum height of 60 inches.

It might not be the tallest travel tripod ever but its compact ball head, quick-release legs and versatile leg configuration (enabling you to shoot really close to the ground) certainly make up for it. The carbon fiber version is considerably more expensive than the aluminum version and only 300g lighter, but if you're regularly taking it on long hikes or trips abroad those 300g can make a difference.

It's designed to be used with mirrorless cameras or DSLRs up to 9kg, but it also comes with an adapter so that you can use your camera phone with it. It's as strong and sturdy as any standard tripod I've ever used and, despite its compact pack-down size, doesn't feel flimsy like some travel tripods.

If you regularly shoot on loose dirt, sand, ice or gravel you can buy the Peak Design Spiked Feet separately, which will give your tripod added stability and prevent it moving on these surfaces. You can also buy a Table-top Kit that enables you to remove four sections and attach alternative rubber feet, which cut down on the weight by around 40%. 

Peak Design doesn't usually offer such big discounts, so you should take advantage of the 30% off for Black Friday while you still can. If you can't quite stretch to the carbon fiber, the aluminium version has also been discounted from AU$589.95 to $501.46 at Peak Design – but on this occasion, we reckon splashing out the extra $150 for the carbon fibre version is totally worth it. 

The DJI Mini 2 SE was designed to be the camera drone that anyone could afford – and because of its keen price, it is a brilliant option for beginner pilots. But now it has dropped in cost even more in Amazon's Early Black Friday deals – making this one of the best Black Friday deals we have seen.

It also means you can get a drone from the market leader, DJI, with an excellent reputation for quality for the kind of money usually associated with less reputable brands!

The DJI Mini 2 SE lets any drone pilot of any ability take stunning aerial videos at up to 2.7K resolution at 30 frames per second, while also being able to take 12-megapixel photos. If that sounds like less resolution than some, the Mini 2 SE has a 3-axis gimbal which makes the results shine above many others.

As the name suggests, the Mini 2 is a refined version of DJI's first low-cost offering, the Mini SE (which we also praised in our full Mini SE review). The already excellent airframe didn't change significantly, but a more recent controller, used by others drones in the DJI family, gave even better range and reliability. 

The Mini 2 also beats the older Mini 2 on price, yet still keeps much of its functionality with the same 36mph flight speed, up to 6.2-mile OcuSync 2.0 video transmission, and more. (Admittedly there is now a Mini 3, but that is a bit more spendy!)

The Mini 2 SE also delivers convenience, making it easy and fun for beginners and experts alike – and falls under the 0.55lb weight limit that triggers more paperwork and regulation for the owner. 

QuickShots and panorama intelligent pre-programmed flight modes allow for pro results with just one tap (which look amazing on your social, and are easily exported using the DJI app). Even with its lightweight frame, the Mini 2 SE is safe to use with robust wind resistance and return-to-home functionality.

Whilst the basic AU$478 kit at Amazon is an absolute bargain, do consider investing a bit more in the Fly More combo kit for AU$628 (also discounted in Amazon's sale) which adds in some useful accessories (although you could always buy these later).

Until Fujifilm decided to make medium format photography a little more attainable for the average enthusiast or hobbyist, it was typically the purview of professionals for studio work, with the price point of most cameras – and their associated lenses – far out of reach for the everyperson.

However, if you've ever been keen on getting your hands on an excellent medium format camera, now would be a very good time indeed, with the 50MP Fujifilm GFX 50S II available for as low as AU$3,375 after a cashback redemption offer. That makes this one of the best Black Friday camera deals we've seen so far.

While you can pick up the GFX 50S II at any authorised retailer and then claim the cashback, the best price at the time of writing is via Ted's Cameras. The body is discounted down to AU$4,675 from AU$5,499.95, which will stack with a deal on Fujifilm's cashback offer page, where you can register your purchase before January 10, 2024 to claim a whopping AU$1,300 back. And that brings the final price of this amazing camera down to a mere AU$3,374.96 for the body only, which is the best price we've seen to date. It smashes this year's EOFY offer of AU$4,199 right out of the park!

Medium format cameras have historically been big and bulky, but Fujifilm has redesigned its new GFX range to be more DSLR-like, with easy-to-use dials and buttons. 

If you're unfamiliar with a medium format sensor, it's 1.7 times bigger than a full-frame 35mm sensor. So the cameras's light gathering capabilities and depth of field are significantly superior to full-framers. There's a certain 'look' that photographers talk about when referring to medium format, and you'll get that here. 

The GFX 50S II's 51.4MP sensor produces some amazing stills, and you can get 200MP high-res shots too using the Pixel Shift Multi-Shot mode. While the 117-point autofocus system is very capable, medium format cameras can feel a little sluggish in comparison to the latest mirrorless cameras... but then these large-sensor shooters were never designed for fast capture.

They were also not designed for 4K video or fast continuous shooting speeds. So if it's really beautiful stills you're after, it doesn't get cheaper or better than the Fujifilm GFX 50S II at this price.

More GFX Black Friday offers

The GFX 50S II might be the best Black Friday offer from Fujifilm, but it's not the only camera that gets a cashback discount. The Fujifilm GFX100S comes with a AU$1,300 cashback offer when purchased from an authorised dealer, with the best price at the time of writing coming via CameraPro where the cashback drops the price down to AU$7,199. That's a 100MP medium format camera... but it also costs you a lot more for the extra pixels.

The cashback also includes XF and GF lenses, with some of the best prices – after cashback of course – possible by shopping from CameraPro's Fujifilm promo sale.

While Fujifilm's cashback offer ends with registrations by January 10, 2024, the discounts at authorised retailers likely won't last past Cyber Monday on November 27, so don't dally.

Fujifilm GFX 50S II vs GFX 100S: key differences 

People ask me the same question every year during Black Friday season: should I look for the best deal on the latest camera, or the best deal even if it's an old one?

It's a good question. Obviously the best Black Friday camera deals are found on bodies that are a couple of years old – so you'll be saving less money on a new camera and saving more money on an older camera. 

Is it false economy, though, to buy an older camera even if it's cheaper? 

There are two ways to approach this question. If you are looking for a specific camera for a specific reason, then clearly you want the best possible saving on it – regardless of what other bargains are on offer.

An example might be the Canon EOS R5, which you might want because you specifically want to shoot 8K. Which means it doesn't matter how much money Amazon slashes off the Panasonic S5 II or how cheap Walmart sells the Nikon Z5, because neither of them shoot 8K. 

So if you absolutely need a particular camera then, yes, you should stick to finding the best deal on it. (For reference, there's $500 off the R5 in the US and an incredible £1,000 off the R5 in the UK right now). 

However, if you just want a new camera, you can potentially save so much more money by keeping your options open.

Let's take the Sony A7R V as an example. It's new and it's amazing, but do you really need it? It's got a 61MP sensor and clever AF, but the Sony A7R IV has basically the same thing with its 60.2MP sensor and almost-as-clever AF – the only difference is, it came out in 2019 so it's far more affordable. 

We tend to think that "newer" equals "better", but that isn't always the case. My colleague Adam recently lamented this very point, noting that the GoPro Hero 12 is actually a downgrade on the Hero 11. I'd actually recommend buying the older model not just because it's cheaper, but because it's functionally better. 

So there you have it. Newer is always more expensive, but newer doesn't always mean better. And older may be cheaper, but older and cheaper don't always mean inferior. 

We all want the shiny new thing. But don't be swayed by what you want; shop for what you need. Because at the end of the day, the only false economy is saving money on something that isn't right for you.

If you've been keen on upgrading to a new pro camera – and one that's supremely powerful and produces top-notch stills and video – you may not want to miss this opportunity either, as there's no guarantee there'll be a better offer when Black Friday camera deals officially come calling on November 24.

The Z8 body is discounted by AU$700 on its product page at CameraPro, but add the camera to your cart and there's an additional AU$300 that gets taken off automatically at checkout for a total saving of AU$1,000 – no discount code needed. However, this additional AU$300 voucher offer is only available until November 19.

Why I'm buying the Nikon Z8

Buying the Nikon Z8 would mean I'm changing systems entirely. I've been using Canon's cameras and lenses for years, but the Z8 brings some flagship features that frankly has me bowled over. And as a wildlife and landscape photographer, these features truly are too tempting to pass up. It's so good, that my TechRadar colleagues who tested it gave it a full five stars in our Nikon Z8 review.

The Z8 essentially a miniaturised Nikon Z9 and without the same excessive price tag of the pro-level sports camera, so I get portability here, although it is a little chunkier than the Z7/Z6 bodies. I'm used to the heft of a Canon DSLR however, so this doesn't  faze me. What I really like about it over the older Nikon Z-series full-frame cameras is its button layout that makes it more intuitive than before.

It uses the same stacked 45.7MP CMOS sensor as the Z9, which is capable of some blistering fast readouts. This makes a mechanical shutter redundant and, like the revolutionary Z9, there's only an electronic shutter here. That means I'll have a maximum shutter speed of 1/32,000 of a second compared to 1/8,000 second on most other premium cameras out there.

As a wildlife photographer, the Z8's burst speeds of up to 120fps are utterly mind-boggling and one of its most tempting aspects. Sure, at this speed I can only capture 11MP low-res stills, but I'll still get 45.7MP images with 30fps – which is already quite a lot – with autofocus and autoexposure engaged between frames.

To match, its buffer memory can save over 1,000 RAW frames at 20fps to the memory card before it stutters, and it won't stop saving JPEGs at 30fps till the card is full. 

I will admit that I prefer Canon's current autofocus system, but I'll be happy with the 493-point phase-detection AF system on the Z8. 

While its video capabilities are definitely overkill for me, it's capable of up to 8.3K/60p 12-bit internal recording in both N-RAW and ProRES RAW HQ formats.

The battery life on the Z8 is, perhaps, the only reason I've got any hesitation – it uses the same pack found in the Z7 bodies, so it tops out at about 275 shots. You could argue that I can use the savings from this deal to pick up an extra battery or two and a grip, but I'll also need to set aside some moolah to buy Nikkor lenses after giving up my current Canon ones.

Still, I can't allow this AU$1,000 to pass me by. 

RIP my savings.

Like many photographers, I've been trawling through Amazon trying to track down the best Prime Day camera deals. Maybe I'll spot a discount on a lens I've been coveting, or a good deal on a terminally overpriced CFexpress card. (Actually, I found an amazing deal on a camera I've always wanted.)

Instead, what I've found is the dumbest photography product I've ever seen during Prime Day: a dog light box. I mean, just look at it. 

I have so many questions. 

1) A product shot of a dog? Who the hell wants a photo of their dog like this? Is it aimed at people whose ecommerce business is selling puppies? 

2) Okay, let's say for a second that somebody does want a sterile photo of a dog in a soulless white void. Maybe for some sort of doggy outfit business. But what the heck is this multi-angle shooting all about? Why does anyone need a top-down photo of a dog? I don't think I've ever even seen a photo taken from that angle, such is its uselessness. 

3) Am I the only one who can't see most dogs sitting put in this thing? Maybe long enough to produce a puddle or a pile, but probably not to take a picture.

4) Why advertise the five colored backgrounds as "not reflective" when there is clearly a reflection on them in the illustrative image? 

Obviously this light box is, in all actuality, supposed to be used for photographing inanimate objects rather than dogs. I get it. But the idea to market it with a dog inside as if to suggest that it's some sort of pet photography starter kit is just really bizarre. Although I guess it worked, because here we are. What can I say – I'm a sucker for a Shiba Inu.

It's got a 24.2MP sensor, is capable of shooting at 40fps, features new AF tracking modes and captures video as oversampled 6K – this is the Canon EOS R6 Mark II. 

It was announced in November 2022 as a replacement for the first-generation EOS R6, offering Canon fans a more powerful full-frame mirrorless option with plenty of bells and whistles. It's an excellent option for anyone looking to upgrade from the now-ageing EOS RP and EOS R, or for someone wanting to get their hands on one of the best hybrid mirrorless cameras on the market today.

Despite its better spec sheet, the EOS R6 Mark II didn't come with a marked-up price tag, launching at the same price as its predecessor at AU$4,499.

Since November, though, it's seen a few discounts, dropping to AU$3,389 at Georges Cameras for the body only earlier this year. In March, Amazon Australia beat that price, offering a generous 25% discount on the camera to bring it down to AU$3,368 for a short time.

Amazon has beaten its own price ahead of Prime Day 2023, with a 29% discount on the EOS R6 Mark II body, now down to just AU$3,186.65.

That's not all! You can save an additional AU$200 after you make the purchase, thanks to Canon's current Travel Cashback Promotion. That will make the final price a very tempting AU$2,986.65. All you need to do is hold on to your receipt and register your purchase by August 19, 2023.

The EOS R6 Mark II is physically almost identical to the original R6, but there are some noteworthy changes that make this a better body to handle.

The old power switch is gone from the left shoulder (long-time Canon mirrorless users will be familiar with this), now replaced by a dedicated stills/video switch. The power switch has been moved to the right shoulder, sitting just below the rear exposure dial – this allows stills photographers to handle the camera single-handed, something street photographers in particular will appreciate.

Those familiar with the joystick design on the EOS R5 and older R6 model will spot the difference here as well – the four notches at the cardinal points is gone, removing the tactile control when using the joystick.

Inside, the sensor resolution has been upped from 20.1MP in the older camera to 24.2MP. The sensor-based electronic shutter can now rattle off continuous shooting at up to 40fps, and Canon promises it has reduced the rolling shutter distortion compared to the R6. There's even a RAW Burst Mode that can capture raw images at 30fps with a 0.5 second pre-shooting buffer, making this ideal for sport shooters.

To complement the high frame rates, Canon has improved the AF performance here. In addition to the existing body, eye, face, head and animal recognition (now expanded to horses and zebras – yes, you read that right), the R6 II can recognise cars, motorcycles, aircraft and trains too.

In terms of video capture, the R6 II now shoots 4K/60p using the full width of the sensor (the Mark I R6 has a 1.07x crop). It can also output 6K ProRes RAW to select Atomos external recorders along with focus breathing compensation with compatible lenses, finally catching up with Sony.

That's a lot of camera for your money. We don't typically see discounts like this outside of big sales, so here's hoping the price might just dip further when Amazon Prime Day 2023 comes knocking on July 11. However, there are no guarantees and we think this is a great price to take advantage of, particularly with the additional AU$200 cashback redemption via Canon.

Unfortunately, the company no longer offers cashback specifically for students. However, Nikon frequently offers seasonal cashback deals on selected cameras and lenses. Presently, it’s running an "Instant Savings" offer that's valid until July 24 2023. This offer is accessible through the Nikon store and authorized, participating Nikon retailers. The scheme allows you save up to hundreds of pounds off select mirrorless bodies, NIKKOR lenses and camera kits. For instance, you can claim £450 cash back on the Nikon Z 7II, and nearly £600 off the Z 7II + 24-70mm kit.

In addition to Nikon's own promotions, Wex Photo Video provides a Student Hub that offers discounts on a wide array of products. They also offer additional services such as 50% off in-store sensor cleaning and free studio space for students working on projects. When you register for an account with your university address to get the benefits.

What’s more, the second-hand retailer MPB provides discounts for anyone engaged in higher education. Open to anyone in further education, simply verify your student status with the Student Beans platform, MPB's partner, and you'll get access to a number of discounts, as well as recommended camera and lens kits. The discounts include £10 off a minimum transaction of £100 or £25 off a minimum spend of £250. Or you can enjoy a 5% discount with no minimum spend. Members also get 5% extra on the quoted price when selling their gear.

Given that MPB's prices are generally much lower than standard RRPs due to its products being used or refurbished, this could be particularly beneficial for students with a limited budget. You can find more information about the products available on discount at the MPB EDU page.

Nikon Student Discounts in the Canada

In Canada, Nikon had a comprehensive Student Savings Program that provides rebates on a wide range of Nikon products. This program is available to students who are members of the NPS Campus Program and are enrolled in a Media, Visual Arts, or Fine Arts program at a full-time accredited college or university. Nikon offers rebates on various Nikon products, including mirrorless cameras, DSLR cameras and NIKKOR lenses. To claim savings, students must submit their rebate claim within 30 days of purchasing an eligible product from a participating retailer. 

Unfortunately, Nikon Canada’s most recent Student Savings Program has come to a close. The recent scheme ran from April 1, 2022, to March 31, 2023, but it’s worth signing up to Nikon’s NPS Campus program, where students can get ongoing support and maintenance on their equipment, plus news of when the next Savings Program cycle begins.

Nikon Student Discounts in the US

In the United States, Nikon's student discount program varies and is often provided through coupon codes on different discount platforms. One of these platforms is HotDeals, which offers several types of deals, from site-wide discounts to specific product discounts. For instance, students may find coupons that provide up to 15% off on Nikon products. The exact discounts and the validity of the offers can fluctuate, so it's advisable to check these platforms frequently to get the most current and beneficial deals. Platforms like HotDeals tend to update their discounts each month with new voucher codes.

Student Beans is another platform where students can find discounts on Nikon products. Nikon doesn’t currently have any offers running on the platform, but they do appear from time to time, so it’s worth checking back periodically.

There are also other ways for students to get discounts on Nikon gear in the US. B&H Photo Video extends the benefits of its EDU Advantage program to both students and educators. This initiative operates via the UNiDAYS platform, which is similar to Student Beans. The secondhand retailer MPB also offers discount scheme for students in the US. The only camera store we can find that offers students discount is Perth-based Team Digital - check out details on its Nikon Student Discount page. All you need to qualify is a student card and to be enrolled in a course that has Photography content, or making purchases made on behalf of the school or college.

Canon is the undisputed market leader in imaging solutions, and it only stays in that position by recognizing the importance of supporting the next generation of photographers and filmmakers. To engage the creators of tomorrow, Canon offers a Student Discount scheme (in some countries at least), which makes select Canon equipment more accessible to students.

The Canon Student Discount programme works by offering students a percentage off the retail price on various eligible products. The discount is not a rebate but rather an up-front reduction in price, making the process straightforward and user-friendly.

Canon currently offers such schemes in the UK and Canada, which we’ll outline below. Unfortunately, Canon USA and Canon Australia aren't offering a comparable scheme at this time. But don't let that put you off - as we have found some retailers that offer those in full-time education discounts - so you can still save on your Canon kit.

Canon Student Discounts in the UK

In the UK, Canon partners with UNiDAYS, a popular student discount platform, to provide students with savings across all of its product ranges, from cameras and lenses to printers, ink to even binoculars and calculators. The full list of included products is available on Canon’s website. 

How it works is that you register for a free membership at UNiDAYS. Once you are verified as a student and become a UNiDAYS member, you’ll receive a code from the platform. However, it's important to note that the UNiDAYS Canon voucher cannot be used in conjunction with any other offer. 

One of the best alternative options available to UK students is the MPB EDU scheme. MPB specializes in selling secondhand digital cameras and lenses – and has an impressive stock of recent models a lower-than-new prices. But it will give students up to 10% off…

Open to anyone in further education, simply verify your student status with the Student Beans platform, MPB's partner, and you'll get access to a number of discounts, as well as recommended camera and lens kits. The discounts include £10 off a minimum transaction of £100 or £25 off a minimum spend of £250. Or you can enjoy a 5% discount with no minimum spend. Members also get 5% extra on the quoted price when selling their gear. The other benefit of buying with MPB is that because all of its products are second-hand, you save money off the RRP of your item purchased new.

One of the UK's biggest photo stores, Wex Photo Video, also runs a number of solutions for students, from second-hand deals and finance options to discount codes and cash back. When you register for an account with your university address, you'll get a code for 10% off products from Calumet, Bowens and Brilliant. You can also earn up to £600 cash back on select Canon cameras, lenses and printers. In-store, Wex offers students 50% off the price of a sensor clean, along with free studio space for shooting projects.

Canon Student Discounts in the Canada

In Canada, Canon offers an even more comprehensive program called the Canon Student Advantage membership. This program is free to join for all eligible students enrolled in a Canadian secondary or post-secondary educational institution.

The Canon Student Advantage membership provides a discount on up to four products for each membership period. This includes up to two bodies or body/lens kits, and up to two lenses. Notably, the discount can be applied on top of the listed sale price of eligible models at participating dealers, offering the potential for considerable savings. You can see the full list of participating dealers, which spans Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the Yukon.

In addition to discounts on purchases, Canon Student Advantage program members also receive expedited service turnaround for both warranty and out-of-warranty repairs. They also benefit from a 20% discount on service and repairs for eligible products. For warranty repairs, Canon promises to repair your equipment within six business days of receiving it, and shipping is free of charge.

Money is tight for everyone right now, so buying a new camera might be difficult. However, if you've been keen on picking up an entry-level APS-C model, Canon's remarkably capable EOS R7 and EOS R10 are discounted right now for Amazon's Mid-Year Sale.

If you don't need the kind of burst speed the R7 offers, the R10 can save you little money. Its sensor has a lower resolution (24.2MP) in comparison, but its image quality and video capabilities are on par with its more expensive sibling. 

Either will make an excellent starting point for anyone looking to improve their photography skills.

No one is making a DSLR anymore, with Nikon stopping in 2020. The last from this camera maker was the Nikon D780 and it was an amazing way to step away from this genre of cameras.

It can rattle off shots at 7fps if you're shooting action, which might not seem like a lot, but you don't always need high speeds to get some excellent captures. South African visual storyteller Lee-Ann Olwage was crowned the winner of the professional creative category at the Sony World Photo Awards 2023 for her series, The Right to Play. In this project, she explores the life-changing power education has on the future of young girls when given an opportunity to learn and dream. 

Working with Kekanya's Dream, a non-profit organization set up by educator and activist Dr. Kakenya Ntaiya. Olwange set out to capture what can happen when the traditional roles of women as wives and mothers, many of whom would undergo female genital mutilation (FGM) are set aside to continue education beyond primary school.

Giving power to the girls she photographed, Olwage allowed them to choose how they posed ranging from standing on a chair to running around a classroom. Using flowers she pinched from her neighbor's garden, she layered them over the printed images to create a collage before photographing them again to create the final pieces. The flowers are a nod to traditional arranged marriages and a life these girls are hoping to escape. 

Speaking to Olwage at the SWPA 2023 exhibition Olwage tells me the photos were featured in the Italian edition of the fashion magazine Vogue "which was a big deal for all of us." She continued, "the most important thing is that these young people inspire each other. Sisters and other friends are seeing these images in magazines and galleries like this [Somerset House, London] and showing what can happen when given an education and opportunity to dream"

Blown away "by the tenacity and strength of the women and girls [in this project], I'm constantly reminded of how important safe spaces are for these women" Olwage explains, and how lucky she is to come from a privileged community where going to school was almost taken for granted. 

"I remember not even wanting to go to school some days, it's not something you ever think about but for many women and girls all over the world it's not even an option so working with these girls was a phenomenal experience"

It is estimated that worldwide around 129 million girls leave education to marry and have children and only 49% of countries have an equal number of boys and girls in primary schools with the gap widening at secondary school. 

While young girls still face traditional cultural practices such as FGM, Olwage will continue to act as a voice for these girls through her powerful, thought-provoking imagery. As a member of the Native, Women Photograph and African Women in Photography, her long-term projects use photography as a way of engaging wider communities and allowing her subjects to engage with how they are represented.

Is Cyber Monday as good as Black Friday? More and more people ask that question every year, especially as both American sales events take root across the globe. 

Once upon a time, the two events served very different purposes. You'd find the best Black Friday camera deals, for example, at bricks and mortar stores like Walmart and Best Buy (usually accompanied by news broadcast-bating footage of shoppers stampeding each other while battling to grab physical products).

1. Buy the phone outright

It can be easier to get a good deal on a phone if you buy the device outright, rather than from a mobile provider on a long contract where you have to pay a monthly fee. This is what you'd call an unlocked phone.

There are plenty of seemingly worthwhile trade-in offers being bandied about from the likes of Apple and Samsung, but these aren't always as good as they first appear, as they require you to trade in an already quite good phone, while the older devices you might actually want to replace will fetch a much lower price than advertised.

2. Buy direct

Like all of the best Black Friday camera deals, the best deal on camera phones is the simplest one – where there's no paperwork to fill it and no trade in required.

Considering we've seen the Canon EOS R3, EOS R7 and EOS R10 cameras launch since the EOS R6 mirrorless came out in July 2020, it subjectively feels like it's been much longer. Despite the two years in between, the price of the R6 hasn't dropped, showing that not all tech products age the same way – this is a camera with staying power.

Whether it's wildlife or sports, this so-called enthusiast-level snapper is currently one of the best mirrorless cameras you can buy right now. We say 'so-called' because it's got the specs of a far more advanced snapper than what would typically be considered 'enthusiast level'. 

It's capable of snapping away at 12fps with the mechanical shutter and a top of 20fps with the electronic shutter. There's a whopping 6,072 autofocus points to choose from, so you know you'll have your subject in sharp focus anywhere in the frame. And its tracking capabilities match Canon's pro sports shooters like the EOS 1D X Mark III.

If the EOS R6 sounds like it suits your shooting needs, then this is your chance to save AU$300 on a single-lens kit when shopping on Amazon right now. There's the option of choosing the RF 24-240mm f/4-6.3 zoom or the RF 35mm f/1.8 prime, and both bundles get the same discount.

Despite being overshadowed by its more expensive EOS R5 sibling, the R6 is equally capable, just as fast and as precise as the more higher-end Canon RF-mount full-frame cameras. You'll just need to decide if 20.1MP resolution is sufficient for you.

Since the launch of the 32MP EOS R7, that resolution might not feel sufficient on paper – especially since the R6 costs a pretty premium AU$4,299 at full price these days (AU$200 less than its original launch price) – but you have to keep in mind that a full-frame camera comes at a much heftier price than an APS-C format one.

But don't scoff at its 20.1MP sensor – it performs extraordinarily well.

You're not going to get 8K video here but the EOS R6 wasn't meant to be a pro-level camera. Still, you do get 4K video at up to 60fps.

In all though, if speed and performance is what you're after from a camera, these discounts on Amazon make the EOS R6 well worth considering.

iPhone 14 series pre-order deals have now gone live. Four new devices were announced during the keynote Apple event on Wednesday – the iPhone 14, iPhone Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max.

That's some way short of what the best portable SSDs are now capable of, but it's quick enough to make reasonably swift progress when backing up.

If you’re new to digital photography, you might well be wondering what all the fuss is about regarding the unveiling of full-frame mirrorless cameras. What’s the big deal about having a large sensor in a smallish camera? And what exactly does ‘full-frame’ mean anyway?

Most DSLRs and mirrorless cameras have an imaging sensor that’s the same size as a single frame of APS-C film – about 22 x 15mm. A full-frame camera, however, has a sensor with the same dimensions as a frame of 35mm film – 36 x 24mm. This means a full-frame sensor has more than 2.5 times the surface area of APS-C. 

Why does size matter when it comes to sensors? Larger sensors can accommodate more pixels for more detailed pictures. For instance, the Canon EOS 5DS’s full-frame sensor houses around 50.6 million effective pixels, and can produce images that measure 8,688 x 5,792 pixels. That works out as a high-resolution 74 x 49cm print! With an abundance of pixels, it’s possible to make substantial crops to the full image in software to improve the composition, but still end up with a usable file size.

Not all of the best full-frame cameras outclass crop-sensor cameras in terms of resolving power, though. At 20.8MP, the Nikon D5 has almost the same pixel count as the company’s 20.9MP Nikon 500 flagship APS-C SLR. This means that despite the difference in sensor size, both cameras are capable of producing an image that’s the same size.

Common sensor sizes

There are a wide range of sensor sizes, from the smaller chip in camera phones to the 150MP medium-format monster in the Phase One XF IQ4. But three formats dominate in DSLRs and mirrorless cameras...

Full-frame and crop-sensor cameras – what's the difference?

The big difference between full-frame cameras and crop-sensor cameras that share a similar resolution in this vein is the size of the pixels. The pixels on the full-frame sensor are larger, and this allows for more efficient light gathering. The upshot is cleaner, better-quality images at high ISO settings, which makes a difference when you’re shooting in low light or at night, or when you’ve increased the ISO sensitivity to get a faster, action-stopping shutter speed.

There are further technical and creative reasons why you might consider making the move up to a full-frame camera. For a start, it’s easier to exploit shallow depth of field effects, so that images have more blur and less sharpness. The effect is enhanced when a large-aperture full-frame prime lens is used.

Shallow depth of field contributes to the appealing full-frame aesthetic – something exploited by filmmakers keen to get the cinematic ‘look’, as well as photographers – although it is entirely possible as well to reduce the depth of field when you use a crop-sensor camera.

Talking of lenses, you get more choice when it comes to full-frame. While other cameras are hardly short of options, there is a legacy of lenses from the days of film which is open to many full-frame users.

Something else to consider if you’re a cropped-sensor camera user looking at moving up to full-frame, is that your current lenses may not be compatible with a full-frame body, as the image projected by the lens won’t cover the larger surface area of the sensor – although some cameras get around this by switching to ‘crop’ mode. You can find out more about this by looking at what sensor is best for bird photography.

Crop-sensor cameras can deliver great images, so why bother with full-frame?

Image quality
Although the design of components, image processing and lens quality make a big difference to the end result, a larger sensor allows for larger pixels – and more of them – giving a clean, detailed image. 

Build quality
Full-frame cameras are aimed at enthusiasts and professionals, so they tend to have the level of build quality that these users need. High-end crop-sensor cameras share a similar level of robustness.

Viewfinder
You’re presented with a larger image in the viewfinder, which can make it easier to compose. It’s not always easier if you wear glasses, however: you may not be able to see the corners without moving your head.

Cropping
The ability to crop full-frame images and retain image quality is a big benefit. Shots taken at high ISO settings can also be ‘downsampled’ – made smaller in software – to reduce the effects of noise.

Google's latest budget phone has now been announced, and the Google Pixel 6a delivers excellent value at its core. It's powered by the same Tensor chipset found in the more expensive Google Pixel 6 flagships but that isn't all that it has going for it.

The Google Pixel 6a is certainly an impressive midrange phone offering a small and lightweight form, measuring 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9mm and weighing just 179g. The weight is mainly due to the fact that it has a plastic back, rather than the glass of the Pixel 6 models, but, at this price you can't knock Google for this.

Featuring a 6.1" FHD+ OLED display with up to 60Hz refresh rate, 6GB of RAM and a storage option of 128GB the 6a is designed to be a cheaper alternative to the Google Pixel 6, without a lot of compromise. One area of note is the cameras on the 6a – while you can't expect flagship 50MP main cameras on the Pixel 6, the Pixel 6a is equipped with two modest 12 megapixel cameras for wide and ultra-wide shooting. With the same 8MP front camera, however, your selfie game will still be on point.

The month of June brings a host of discounts thanks to the end-of-financial-year sales. This is when most major retailers in the country discount old stock to make way for new ones, meaning you can find a great deal on a camera or a lens.

According to Australian retailer CameraPro, some of its bestselling kits are from Sony, Canon, Fujifilm and Olympus. That's an interesting mix, with full-frame bodies from the first two and APS-C format models from Fujifilm. The original Nikon Z7 and Z6 were brilliant cameras, and the updated models are just as good, if not better. If you've been itching to get your hands on one of the latter pair, then there's some significant discounts on both the Z 6II and Z 7II bodies on Amazon right now.

Both the Nikon Z 7II and the Nikon Z 6II seem like they've been around forever, even though they only debuted back in October 2020. The other big improvement is the availability of dual card slots – one for XQD/CFexpress cards and one for SD UHS-II devices. Both cameras also benefit from a USB-C port that allows you to charge the battery in-camera, and also 'hot charging' while the camera is in use.

Other than that, they share the same specs and feature set as their older siblings, and now you can get the new models for less.

We've searched the most reputable online retailers for the best Nikon deals on our favourite cameras. Read on to grab yourself a bargain.

When the Nikon Z mirrorless series began, it seemed like it would be the preserve of professional and serious enthusiast photographers only. But the Nikon Z50 brought it to a wider user base by being the first Z-mount camera with a smaller APS-C sensor. So while it doesn’t quite have that professional sheen of the Z6 II and Z7 II, it is much more affordable and lightweight.

The Z50 is still a camera that’ll suit enthusiasts, and boasts plenty of impressive specs. Being able to burst-shoot at 11fps is handy no matter what level you’re at, and the 4K UHD video from the camera looks pretty amazing. We’re also big fans of the comprehensive autofocus system, which provides a beefy spread of 209 autofocus points. 

Even four years down the line, we still rate this as the best Z-mount APS-C camera. The newer Nikon Z fc is very flashy and tempting, with its gorgeous retro looks. However, the Z50 is both significantly cheaper, and has a few practical features the Z fc lacks, like a built-in flash.

The D7500 borrows some of the speed from Nikon's top APS-C D500 model, and some of the affordability of the D7200 below it, to offer a well-judged blend of performance and value. Nikon's 20.9MP sensor features here, which sacrifices almost 4MP against its older 24MP unit, but it brings improved overall performance and image quality together with 4K video and extended high ISO possibilities. You also get a tilting rear touchscreen and 8fps continuous shooting, the result being a camera that has no obvious shortcomings in any areas.

Nikon's 'advanced beginner' camera is a little gem. The rear LCD screen is fully articulating and offers touch control, and, thanks to Nikon's new(ish) AF-P lenses, the autofocus is surprisingly swift and discreet when using live view or when filming videos. In many ways it's not much of a jump from its predecessor, the no-longer-available D5500, however this newer model supports Nikon's SnapBridge system for wireless image transfer. Unlike many comparable cameras, this little unit also sports a vari-angle screen, which makes it much easier to shoot memorable compositions from unusual angles.

Despite being superseded by the D5600 (above), the D5300 remains on sale but for a lower price – which makes it a good-value option. It maintains most of the features we've come to love on the upper-entry-level D5000 series of cameras, such as a 3.2in flip-out screen, a 39-point AF system and a respectable 5fps burst shooting mode, together with Full HD video to 50/60p and a sensor that lacks a low-pass filter for better detail retention.

If you’re after a cheap Nikon camera with a huge zoom range, the COOLPIX P900 should be top of your list. With its 24-2000mm (equiv) zoom lens and five-stop Vibration Reduction system, it’s unsurprisingly become a smash with amateur astrophotographers, as well as holiday photographers who don’t want to haul around a DSLR and lenses. Images taken in good light look vibrant, and there’s the option for full manual control, although we’d have liked to see Raw format shooting too. It’s perhaps a little heavy, but if you’re in the market for an ultra-zoom bridge camera, the COOLPIX P900 is Nikon's best-value offering right now (the subsequent P1000 is a good camera, but much more expensive, so we're sticking with the P900 for our cheap recommendation).

How we test cameras

We test cameras both in real-world shooting scenarios and in carefully controlled lab conditions. Our lab tests measure resolution, dynamic range and signal to noise ratio. Resolution is measured using ISO resolution charts, dynamic range is measured using DxO Analyzer test equipment and DxO Analyzer is also used for noise analysis across the camera's ISO range.
