Gallery: Detroit Liquor Stores by Jon de Boer

Jon de Boer’s Flickr set ‘Detroit Liquor Stores‘ caught our eye. Run-down liquor stores at night are not something that instantly leaps to mind when thinking of a subject to photograph, yet these images are intriguing – they represent something of the culture of the area, and as a collective set they become fascinating to look at. Jon was inspired to shoot the buildings as he was intrigued by the unique signage of the local businesses.

Jon had this to say about the set:

“My Detroit liquor store series began like many of my photography projects: by just being outside observing and shooting. However, I can remember being intrigued by the unique hand-painted signage of the various local businesses in Detroit, and being especially fascinated with the neon glow of the liquor stores long before I began photographing them. I think part of this fascination comes from my graphic design background and my interests in different forms of typography and signage. Night photography remains one of my favorite aspects of photography even though I spend more time shooting in the afternoon these days. The glow of neon and various street lighting contrasted with the surrounding darkness has a really strong visual impact to me, and I like to convey that through my photos. The liquor store series began with the “Fried Chicken Pizza” photo in 2010. It was one of those instances when I happened to drive by something, and instantly knew I had to photograph it. After that first image, I got the idea to begin a set on liquor stores in the Detroit area at night, and it is still an ongoing series that I hope to continue to build on.”

Pinterest, Flickr join forces to improve photo credits

A new joint effort between Flickr and social networking site Pinterest aims to improve the attribution of photographers’ images.

Flickr announced the move on its blog, stating: “We’ve worked closely with Pinterest to make it even easier for you to share to Pinterest in a way that will ensure that your Flickr photos are properly attributed, regardless where they are pinned from.”

Every image shared on Flickr will now be attributed with the name of the photographer, the image title and a link to the photo page.

This attribution cannot be edited, so “photographers can rest assured that pins and repines of their images will be credited and linked back as well, ensuring people can leave comments, face the photo or contact you directly on Flickr,” the blog post adds.

Pinterest has also gone back and added the proper attribution to all photos that have been pinned from Flickr so far, the company added.

There is now a Pinterest button in Flickr’s share menu, as seen above. If a photographer does not want their content to be shared, the share menu can be disabled.

Flickr to increase photo file size ‘within weeks’

Flickr has announced it will be increasing the photo file size it allows users to upload, as a response to increasingly high-resolution cameras on the market.

Currently, free Flickr users can upload files of up to 15MB, which rises to 20MB for pro members. The new file limits have yet to be finalised.

Speaking to our sister website TechRadar, Flickr’s head of product Markus Spiering noted an upward trend in the file sizes being uploaded, which prompted the change.

“In the next few weeks you’re going to see adjustments to the file sizes you can upload,” he said.

The shift comes as a result of increasingly high resolution cameras being released onto the market, including the recently-announced Nikon D800.

Flickr gets a facelift

Photo-sharing giant Flickr will be brought up-to-date with an image-centric makeover, starting at the end of the month.

The current haphazard, text-heavy design will be replaced by bigger images and a cleaner, justified arrangement that has been likened to Pinterest.

The changes will begin on February 28th with a revamped photo page and app-like upload screen.

Flickr product boss Markus Spiering, who is heading up the new design, revealed that major changes will continue in waves throughout 2012. Spiering has also spoken about greater integration of Flickr with other Yahoo! products, following its much-debated takeover in 2005.

Renewed interest in the site comes amidst rising popularity of rival sites such as Instagram and 500px.

Australia Day nearly passed us by. It was only thanks to Twitter that we were altered to the fact that Australia Day is on 26th January. Fortunately the day wasn’t quite over; we still had time to ask our awesome community on Facebook to upload their best photographs of Australia, so all was not lost. And it’s a good job we didn’t just let Australia Day slip by, because we’ve managed to gather some great photographs from people on Facebook and Flickr. Here are the best of them!
