The Canon EOS 700D (Canon Rebel T5i) is the replacement for the Canon EOS 650D. It will sit alongside the Canon EOS 600D at the very top of Canon’s “consumer” lineup, just below the Canon EOS 60D that starts its “enthusiast” range.

Along with its 18-megapixel APS-C Hybrid CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 image processor, the Canon T5i / EOS 700D also boasts 5fps shooting and a native ISO range from ISO 100 to 12,800.

Find out in our testing team’s Canon T5i review video whether this new Canon camera is a worthy addition to your camera bag.

Canon T5i Review Video Transcript

Hi, I’m Angela Nicholson head of testing for Future Publishing’s photography portfolio and in this video I’m going to take a look at the Canon EOS Rebel T5i / EOS 700D

Anyone who owns a T4i/650D will spot that this camera looks very similar, in fact it’s almost identical and has the same 18-million-pixel APS-C format sensor, Digic 5 processor and 9-point autofocusing system.

As before, this camera has a touchscreen which is backed up by the usual array of button and dials so it’s up to you how you adjust the camera settings.

The screen is very responsive and once you start using it you start to rely on it more and more. It provides a really quick way of changing settings, scrolling through images and zooming in to check details.

The downside to this is that the screen quickly gets covered in fingerprints and these obscure the image in bright light, so it’s essential that you carry a cloth to wipe the screen regularly.

On the top of the camera we can see that the mode dial has been changed a little with the introduction of raised icons and a finer textured edge. It also rotates through 360 degrees making a little quicker to find the option that you want.

As in the camera it replaces the T5i, or 700D, has pixels on its imaging sensor that are used for the phase detection part of the hybrid focusing system that is available when using live view mode or shooting videos.

However, Canon has improved the live view focusing performance of the new camera and it focuses quicker with one of the STM lenses mounted.

I still wouldn’t use live view when shooting a moving subject though, you’re much better off composing the image in the viewfinder and using the faster phase detection AF system.

The STM lenses have stepper motor autofocus drive and this is designed to move subjects more smoothly into focus when shooting video.

It works well and is almost silent so you get very high-quality footage with the subject moving slowly, but smoothly into focus.

One of the biggest changes brought with this camera is that the impact of the JPEG-only Creative Filters can be previewed on the screen when shooting in live view mode.

Alternatively, you can apply these filters using the camera’s image processing controls.

The menu system will be familiar to Canon SLR users and as usual it’s divided into tabbed screens that allow quick navigation.

The My menu option is especially useful as you can register up to 6 features that you want to access from it. I find it useful to use it to reach features like mirror lock-up and the flash control options.

There’s also a Quick menu that can be reached by pressing this button or touching this icon on the screen. It gives a quick route to the most commonly used features and adjustments can be made using the physical buttons or the on-screen controls.

The T5i/700D produces high quality images with bags of detail, rich, pleasant colours and a good range of tones.

However, as we have found before with Canon’s iFCL Evaluative metering system, the exposure can vary significantly in high contrast situations depending upon the brightness of the subject under the active AF point. It responds more like a centreweighted metering system than you might want.

Canon has revealed an official Canon EOS 100D price, release date and spec sheet for the new DSLR claimed to be the smallest and lightest APS-C DSLR ever made.

The Canon EOS 100D was made official today and is not a Canon 1100D successor, the company says, but instead will sit above Canon’s entry-level DSLR in its lineup.

The 18-megapixel Canon EOS 100D price tag will be £579.99 / €739.99 inc. RRP (body only), or £709.99 / €909.99 in a kit with the new EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM also announced today. A Canon EOS 100D release date is expected in late April.

Canon Announcement: Canon EOS 100D release date set for April 2013

Measuring 116.8 x 90.7 x 69.4mm and weighing in at 407g, the new Canon EOS 100D boasts a new 18-megapixel APS-C Hybrid CMOS AF II Sensor, which uses phase detection pixels spread across 80% of the sensor’s imaging surface to help increase the camera’s AF speed and tracking performance in Live View or HD movie mode.

The Canon 100D also uses the company’s DIGIC 5 image processor and features an Optical Viewfinder, as well as a 3in ClearView II Capacitive Touch screen.

Canon EOS 100D price confirmed at £579.99 / €739.99 body only

Other features include 4fps continuous shooting and a range of shooting modes and creative filters, such as new Kids, Food and Candlelight modes, an enhanced Creative Auto Mode.

And new to the Canon 100D is Canon’s Extra Effect Shot mode allowing photographers to capture two images simultaneously – one with a Creative Filter applied and one standard image.

For HDSLR enthusiast, the Canon EOS 100D also shoots full HD movies at 1920 x 1080p and incorporates a Video Snapshot mode that allows photographers to capture and edit short video clips.

Canon EOS 100D specs include new 18-megapixel Hybrid CMOS AF II sensor

Announced along with the Canon EOS 100D and Canon EOS 700D is a new Canon standard zoom lens, the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM.

This new Canon lens features a 4-stop Optical Image Stabilizer, which allows photographers to use lower ISO levels and longer shutter speeds.

It also offers a close focusing distance of 0.25m, Super Spectra Coating and STM technology to keep noise to a minimum while focusing during video recording.

Want to learn how to get more out of your Canon DSLR? Find out how to use your camera's metering modes so you can get better results when using the Auto Focus setting.

Canon’s iFCL (intelligent Focus Colour Luminance) metering system is used on all its current DSLRs. This takes both colour and brightness information into account, as well as the focus setting.

When you’re using Evaluative Metering in One Shot autofocus mode, the exposure setting is heavily biased towards the active focus point.

So, for example, if you’re using multi-point AF and only one of the points locks onto a target within a scene, the light metering will be based on this point alone.

Evaluative metering therefore works in a different way to a conventional ‘multi’ metering mode that takes all parts of the scene into account.

It works well for subjects such as backlit portraits, where you’re using a single AF point on the face of the person you’re photographing, and you want to capture the correct exposure for the subject, regardless of how much the background is overexposed.

In other situations, however, the metering can be thrown if the AF point that achieves autofocus falls on a particularly light or dark part of your scene.

To take full control and get more consistent results in tricky lighting conditions, it often pays to switch to one of the other metering modes available on your Canon DSLR.

Centre-weighted average uses the central region of the scene as the main basis for light metering, but also takes the periphery into account to a lesser degree.

The Partial metering mode is a bit more picky, as it uses only the central region and completely disregards what’s happening around the edges of the scene. Spot metering is the most critical mode, as it uses only a very small point at the centre of the frame and everything else is disregarded – you therefore need to be very careful with your aim when you’re using this mode.

It’s also important to understand the difference that alternative autofocus modes can make to metering. In One Shot autofocus mode, metering will be locked at the moment that autofocus is achieved, for as long as you maintain a light press on the shutter button before finally fully pressing it to take your shot.

In AI Servo autofocus mode, which you’d use to track moving targets, the metering updates continuously as the focus setting adjusts itself. In AI Focus mode, metering remains fixed as long as the target remains stationery.

However, if the target moves and AI Focus switches to tracking mode, metering will be updated automatically.

You can lock the metering system to an initially captured exposure value, regardless of which autofocus mode you’re using, by pressing the AEL (Auto Exposure Lock) button on the back of the camera – it’s labelled with a star.

Overall, you can combine the various different autofocus and light metering modes to work in pretty much any way you want once you understand what each one does, making the most of the great versatility offered by current Canon DSLRs.

Step by step – Choose the right metering mode

1. Evaluative
This works well for general shooting, especially when you’re using multi-point autofocus, where a number of different autofocus points are likely to lock on to foreground areas with different brightness levels. Light and dark areas in the foreground will then be averaged out to produce a well-balanced exposure.

2. Centre-weighted
Where you’re most interested in a particular part of a scene but still want to avoid the sky washing out, or shadows being too dark, use Centre-weighted metering and single-point AF, using the centre autofocus point to focus on the main subject before swivelling the camera to recompose if necessary.

3. Partial
A small area at the centre of the frame is used for Partial metering; all other areas are disregarded. This is a good choice for shots such as backlit portraits. Lightly press and hold the shutter button to achieve autofocus and metering, then recompose if necessary and fully press the shutter button to take your shot.

4. Spot
For tricky, high-contrast scenes, Spot metering is often the best choice. If, for example, you’re photographing a very bright subject against a dark background, or vice-versa, you can take a light reading with pinpoint precision. You may also need to use exposure compensation to fine-tune the results.

Are you considering the Canon EOS M vs T4i / 650D? We pit Canon’s first compact system camera against its heralded entry-level DSLR to compare the handling and image quality of the Canon EOS M vs T4i / 650D.

Unlike some compact system cameras (CSCs) the Canon EOS M has an APS-C (22.3×14.9mm) format sensor. In fact it has the same large 18Mp CMOS sensor and DIGIC 5 processor as the Canon EOS Rebel T4i / 650D, so in theory at least it could be capable of matching one of the new Canon DSLRs for image quality.

But as Canon’s first CSC gets a new mount and lens it’s not a given, so we’ve been testing the Canon EOS M vs T4i / 650D side by side to see how they compare.

Because it’s a compact system camera the EOS M doesn’t have a mirror or an optical viewfinder and, as Canon hasn’t given it an electrical viewfinder, images must be composed on the LCD screen.

Consequently, in a Canon EOS M vs T4i comparison, the M replicates many of the features that the Rebel T4i has in Live View mode, including the 31-point Hybrid AF system that was debuted by the Canon T4i.

This system is intended to combine the speed of phase detection with the accuracy of contrast detection AF.

The screen is also the same 3-inch 1,040K-dot touch-sensitive device as is found on the T4i, but it’s fixed rather than mounted on an articulating hinge.

This means that when composing photos on the Canon EOS M vs the T4i / 650D, it’s not quite so easy with the M at awkward angles – low down close-ups or shooting held high over people’s heads – as it is with the T4i.

Canon EOS M vs T4i / 650D: spec sheets compared

Want to know how the Canon EOS M specs compare vs the T4i / 650D? We put together this handy cheat sheet which shows both Canon cameras’ specs in a format that makes it easy to compare the EOS M vs T4i.

Which memory cards can you use in your Canon DSLRs? Drag and drop our Canon memory card compatibility chart and find out!

Like many, you may have got a new camera for Christmas or bought one in the sales. Maybe you got a shiny new Canon 60D to replace your old Canon 450D, but intend to hang on to the latter as your back-up camera. You’ll want to buy some new memory cards that are compatible with both cameras.

Both Canon cameras are fully compatible with SD (SecureDigital) and SDHC (SD High Capacity) cards. It’s not worth bothering with SD cards as they have a 2GB capacity limit, whereas SDHC cards are available in capacities of up to 32GB. This is much more useful considering the Canon 60D’s larger image resolution and bigger file sizes, as well as for video.

For more about which memory cards are compatible with your EOS camera, we’ve put together a handy Canon memory card compatibility chart listing all the current and discontinued Canon cameras, which lists the type of memory card each uses.

SDHC cards are the most common Canon memory card format and use a Fat32 file system.

However, SDXC (eXended Capacity) cards use a different exFat file system. These are available in capacities of 64GB and higher, but they aren’t compatible with some of the older Canon DSLRs like the 450D or Canon 500D.

Another factor is that many of the latest SDHC and SDXC cards use a new UHS-1 (Ultra High Speed) bus. This offers the potential of super-fast data transfer speeds with cameras that are UHS-1 compliant. However, they’re also fully compatible with non-UHS-1 cameras.

Currently, only the Canon 5D Mark III, 650D and EOS M support the UHS-1 bus but it’s likely that all future models that use SDHC/XC cards will feature this

Whether they have UHS-1 or not, it’s best to buy SDHC/XC cards that have a specification of at least Class 10, which deliver a sustained write speed of at least 10MB/s.

These are now barely any dearer to buy than slower Class 6 or Class 4 cards, and they’re easily fast enough for full HD video recording and sustained stills shooting in burst mode.

Our testing team has had their hands on the Canon EOS 6D and put the new EOS camera through their rigorous regime of lab and field tests. Find out what they thought in our Canon EOS 6D review video.

In our Canon EOS 6D review, we take an in-depth look Canon’s first true enthusiast level full frame DSLR, which is positioned just below the EOS 7D and above the EOS 60D in Canon’s line-up.

With the Canon 6D price tag at £1,799/AU$2,349/US$2,099 body only or £2,519.99/AU$3,498/US$2,899 with an EF 24-105mm f/4 L IS USM kit lens, the Canon EOS 6D is appreciably more affordable than the Nikon D600, its biggest rival.

In our Canon EOS 6D review video, Ali Jennings, Lab Manager for our testing team, takes a look at what his new Canon DSLR offers photographers and if it lives up to the hype.

Canon EOS 6D Review Video Transcript

“Hi I’m Ali Jennings, imaging lab manager for Future’s photography portfolio.

This is the Canon EOS 6D, Canon’s first true enthusiast level full frame digital SLR, which is positioned just below the EOS 7D and above the 60D in Canon’s line-up.

Inside is Canon’s Digic 5 processor and a 20.2 million pixel full frame CMOS sensor with a native sensitivity range of ISO 100-25600, which is great for and a range of conditions, and if needed this range can be extended from ISO 50 to 102400.

Two new features for Canon’s DSLR range are inbuilt GPS and WiFi technology. These are handy for recording your location and taking wireless control of your camera.

Whilst the weight of the 6D and the 60D are the same, the 6D’s body isn’t as deep and this makes the grip a bit deeper so it gives really good purchase.

The button layout has been thoughtfully arranged and gives you instant access to the camera’s main features. Many of these can also be accessed using the Quick menu button here, and adjusted using the rear navigation pad.

The menu system is huge with 15 tabs, so the inclusion of the My Menu screen cuts down time locating commonly used features by being able to add them to this screen.

When it comes to AF there are 11 points grouped around the centre of the frame and although this gives a reasonable amount of choice, only the centre one is cross type. We found this is the best one to choose for moving subjects, so you may have to crop to improve the compose post-capture.

The Canon 6D uses Canon’s 63-zone iFCL metering system with a dual-layer metering sensor. As we have found with other Canon models, this works well, but in high contrast situations a little compensation, either way, often needs to be dialled in to get the exposure looking right.

Colour rendition is excellent adding slight but not overwhelming warmth, and the TFT screen shows an accurate representation of the final image.

On the whole the 6D shows excellent control over noise, with none visible at the lower end of the ISO range. Coloured speckling is visible at ISO 25600 along with some loss of detail in JPEG files, but the images are still usable,

The Canon 6D is the first DSLR to feature WiFi technology built-in. This works well taking just a couple of minutes to pair both camera and iPhone. Once paired and a shooting mode is selected you can then adjust the settings and take pictures using the controls on the screen of your phone.

GPS can be switched on here and once done automatically tags your images with your location, this data can then be view in Canon’s software or other applications that are able to read GPS data.

There’s no doubt where the Canon EOS 6D is aimed, with pro and beginner features stripped, you’re left with a camera finely tuned to the needs of the enthusiast.

The full frame sensor captures images that are rich in colour and tone, with raw format files offering plenty of scope for adjustment. It’s a great option for anyone looking to upgrade to a full-frame camera from a camera such as the 60D.”
