I have one of them and it is superb, great value for money as well although sometimes I do wish I had gone for the IS version but then again that doubles the price.

I keep trying to save up for the 70-200 F2.8 ISII but keep getting tempted by other shiny stuff

I've just bought the Canon 85mm f/1.8 and the difference in the quality of image over the kits lenses is staggering. It is like a different camera.Go for the best that you can afford. Trying the lens before you use it is a good idea (maybe hire one) but you'll not really see the difference until you start looking at the photos on a proper monitor so try to get one for a weekend.
