This will spark a debate. Some say get a "brand name " UV or skylight filter. Others will say why put cheap glass in front? Many recommend using the lens hood all the time, this will offer protection as well.

"brand name" can vary. Tiffen, Hoya, B+W, etc.

Something like this would do the job.
You don't need to spend a fortune to get a decent filter.

Personally, I'm not a fan of 'protection' filters.
Adding another couple of air/glass surfaces is not a good thing if you can avoid it. Always use a lens hood and get into the habit of replacing the lens cap when not actually in use. If the front element does get damaged (something that has yet to happen to me in over 50 years), that's what insurance is for.
However, if you would rather save the insurance premium and use a filter to protect the lens then weigh up the cost of the lens and buy a UV filter appropriately priced. Don't spend £700 on a lens then put a £5 lump of glass on the front.
