Photographing aurora borealis

Hi,
I have just booked myself a trip to Tromso, Norway - the gateway to the arctic circle - to try and catch a glimpse, and hopefully a photo or two, of the Northern Lights.

Does anyone have any tips or pointers on how to take photos of the northern lights? Or, indeed, about the trip in general - it's the first trip of this type I have ever taken and I am doing it all solo.

I realise extreme cold could play havoc with my camera and I am sure you all have a few tricks up your sleeve to deal with this ...

Cheers, Karen
