Just starting out

Hello im just over 2 months into photography and would enjoy some feedback good or bad this is one of my Favorite so far and ive uploaded some to the gallery so if you can have a quick look at them that would be great. Any help would be fantastic

Hi Mark,

I'm certainly no expert so these are just my thoughts.

Composition - the arm of the photographer in the photo is cut off and creates an impression that's she's a but cramped. Maybe opening the frame up a bit may help with this. But overall I like the composition, with the photographer offset to one side.

The photographer looks a at underexposed, but you've kept the detail in the white jumper which is good. Maybe a bit of flash could have helped brighten up the photographer.
Also a wider aperture my have helped with DOF for the background, but I'm not sure what you were trying to create here.

Overall, I like the idea of this photo, and it's certainly not bad, but maybe a few tweaks could help.

Like I said, I'm no expert so these are just my observations.

Thank you Jediboy, truth is this wasnt the shot id set up for it was a spur of the moment shot although it was set for a similar one with the background blurred slightly. My daughter the wouldnt pose for the first and it was a sneaky one from me so thats why her elbow is cut off. I will have a fiddle when I get home from work and see if I can sort the exposure out a little.

I agree with Jediboy on the composition because it does look as if your young model has been clipped accidentally rather than cropped for artistic reasons , this classic image can work very well even when the model has been cropped in half if not more so it's not that she has been clipped but for me it's the amount that matters .

The other thing that doesn't quite feel right to me is the background it seems more of a distraction than anything else , I think if it was a plainer scene it might work better or even a scene that pulls your eye in past your model and into the distance .

Having said all of that I think the technical aspects of your shot are very good , the exposure is very well balanced from front to back the detail is sharp where it should be and the colours are very natural , there is a small patch on the cardy that has burnt out but I don't think you could of done much about that anyway . If you could pull out a bit more or even crop in tighter you might find a whole new looking image but as all my comments these are just my thoughts .

Thank You markgozz, if im to be honest with myself this was more a point and shoot shot than a composed one because I was playing around with the camera. Both yours and Jediboys comment are very humbling thank you
