Which One Should I Get?

Hi,
I have a Canon 500d, I was going to upgrade but someone has advised me to upgrade my lens instead. I have a Canon 18-55mm and a Canon 70-300mm.

As I'm a complete novice I am after some advice on which lens I should get out of:

a - Tamron 18-270mm f/3.5-6.3 VC PZD

b - Sigma 18-250mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS


Ultimately I'm after one lens as a 'carry about' set up.

I have never used either so cant help other than to say what you should always do go to a shop and try them both
I do have a sigma fisheye and its every bit as good as the canon one I looked at

The Tamron has faired poorly in reviews I have read and the sigma has always come out quite well.

When I owned my 40D I did have the original Tamron 18-270mm which I ditched after getting my 7D, as a lens it was just too much of a compromise for me especially at the wide end where it has really bad barrel distortion and the high end it did suffer really bad chromatic abbertions.

The Sigma lens whilst better will still be a compromise as it covers a wide zoom range, IIRC in your last thread you were after better image quality I think both those lenses may disappoint you in that respect.

Personally I would look to carry two lenses if possible, the cheaper options that deliver good image quality would be:-

Sigma 17-70 os (As suggested by Wave01) in your previous thread and Canon EF-S-55-250mm IS II (A bit flimsy on build but lovely and sharp)

On Amazon the Sigma is £270 and the Canon lens is £160 which will be a total of £430

Where as the SIgma 17-250 is £399 on Amazon so it will cost you £31 extra for two better lenses.

This is of course just my viewpoint but if you do really want to just use one lens then the SIgma 17-250 would be the better option.
