New Canon remote control limitations?

I have a EOS 60D and have been bought a Hahnel Combi TF Wireless remote shutter and flash trigger. I also have a new Canon remote control. I wanted to fire the shutter remotely and also the slave flash using these items. Unfortunately I have learned that the Canon remote control I have can only be used to remotely fire the shutter when it is in line of sight of the camera i.e in front of the camera. Therefore removing the ability to stand behind the camera. Is this the case and if so, ignoring the option of returning the Canon remote, what can I do to be able to "hide" behind the camera. I want to set up a bird feeder and capture birds in winter snow in my garden, so to be able to be indoors and fire the camera when appropriate. I have a Canon 70-200 f4 lens so I thought I had it all sorted. Any ideas?

Wired. You can get remote shutters with a really long wire. Or you can use an RF (Radio frequency) remote. One part plugs into the wired remote port and you have a remote that does not need to be line of sight.

I use the Hahnel Giga T Pro wireless remote which has a range of around 100m it can also be used as a self timer.

how far away from the camera will you be ?

here's a thought

if you have a laptop and are close enough there is no reason why you couldn't use the canon software that comes with the camera to remotely fire the shutter using a 5 or 10 meter usb cable
not to mention the advantages of using live view

i don't know if you can get away with using a straight 10 mtr usb cable but you can certainly us a 5 mtr extension cable with the usb cable supplied with the camera with no problems
after that you will be looking at a usb active repeater cable

a quick fix for the remote you already have would be a strategically positioned small mirror to allow the infra red beam from the remote to be reflected on to the infra red sensor on the front of you camera
