Focusing problem

Hi All,
Apologise if this topic has been covered before but couldn't find anything when browsing. I use a canon 500d with 2 canon lens 18-55 & 55-250 lens. When recently using camera it is regularly failing to focus properly. Have problem with both lenses, I am therefore assuming it is a camera problem. Is anybody able to diagnose what the problem is likely to be and is it likely to cost mega bucks. Camera was purchased in 2009 with kit lens. telephoto lens was purchased in 2010. No items over used.
Appreciate any guidance.
Thanks

it could be something as simple as dust on the mirror but be very careful how you go about cleaning it the coating is very delicate

It could be that the auto focus is focusing on the nearest object rather than what you want it to focus on try using center spot focusing and see if that helps

Thanks for your responses. I have cleaned the contacts and also used my blower on the mirror. Seems a bit better, but I have located a service centre close to my daughters and have obtained a quote from them so I will take it to be looked at next time I visit her. I will test it out at weekend again.

Regards

Mandy
