How to decide on the price when selling a lens?

I have a number of manual lenses from my old cameras and I would like to sell them, but whenever I try the first question I'm being asked is how much do I want for them. The issue is that:
1 - I never sold photo equipment before
2 - The lenses were quite expensive (above $500 each)
3 - It will really hurt my feelings to sell them cheap
So my question to the forum is - how do you decide the price to ask when selling an old lens? Let’s say a Canon FD 50mm/f1:14, total manual. If not selling it, is there an adapter ring to connect old Canon lenses to new EOS-D cameras? If yes, is it worth it? Where do I buy such adapters?

canon actually made a FD to EOS adapter but never really put it on sale to the general public only a select amount of pro photographers go there hands on one to make the crossover fro FD to EOS less painful to the wallet

needless to say they are rare as hens teeth and demand a considerable price should one turn up for sale

from what i remember the FD to EOS adapter has it's own glass elements within it so putting a cheap £20 adapter in front of an expensive lens i wouldn't like to predict the results

on the selling point ebay is a good reference point
just keep an eye on like for like sales

If I will decide to sell the old lens, can you advise on any guidlines on how to set the price? What can I expect to get for a lens that cost me $500 ~20 years ago? for example Canon FD 50mm/f1:14

The only thing I can think of is to look on eBay for example and see what sort of price they go for. That will give you an idea of roughly how to price your items.
