Yes, while super zooms might not be as sharp as a prime they perform a useful function, giving you extra reach without you swapping lenses, which could mean getting the shot. I use both primes and super zooms and I'm very happy with both.

Have to agree with OldBoy super zooms have a purpose and they are certainly not point and shoot.

Flake, I read that as you saying he had a piece of crap lens as well. While not saying you are a lens snob, and your points are valid, it does come across as harsh and perhaps a bit demeaning.

My point is Jainondavid that you probably won't be able to see it in the images, so long as it's only on the front element, and that holds true for all lenses, it wasn't aimed at superzooms, in fact it's come from a Zeiss rep one of the highest quality lenses available. The truth is that the front element just isn't as important as people seem to think it is.

With fungus in the lens it will be next to impossible to sell on and it doesn't look pretty, but so long as it's not all over the glass it'll make no real difference. The 50mm prime will allow you to get some really sharp contrasty images you'll really see the difference there!

As for Semaj if it's not a point and shoot then what is it? Because I can't see a difference between it and the SX1 IS.

Obviously the OP didn't see it as harsh & demeaning and it wasn't written that way.
