[QUOTE=2Beers;83875 I only comment on what I like as I am not a fan of Macro etc but if I see an image that I like then I will say so but as for constructive crit I am not experianced enough to comment[/QUOTE]

OK, don't post comments, but write them out as if you were going to.

If you like something, work out why you like it, and put it down on paper (or monitor).
If you don't like something, again, work out exactly why you don't like it and write it down.

You'll soon find that

a) it becomes easier to see why you like and dislike things and
b) you can spot immediately what you think is wrong.

And you may even find that things you dislike are actually quite good.

Doing this is the best way to learn to see - an ability many do not have.

A story just came to my head reading that last post....An arrogant sculpturer made a statue (that stands in Durham City Centre). He declared the statue perfect and boasted that no one would find a fault. No one could.....Until a blind man felt his way around it and discovered the horse had no tongue..The sculpturer (or is it sculptor) hung himself in despair!

So we dont have to see faults, we can feel them too!

There now...lol

The word is sculptor.

Clearly the horse was given to the council, rather than bought. At least, that would explain why no-one looked for a tongue, as you should never look a gift horse in the mouth.

As a slightly less frivolous lesson to take from this, there is an unstated assumption that underlies the story - that to be a perfect sculpture it had to be a perfect replica of the real object. That suggests a view of art that restricts it to representation rather than interpretation, and makes the perfect artist the one who can exactly reproduce nature. I leave it to your own thoughts as to whether this is a very limiting idea, and rather stifling.

There, have let off some steam!
I know what you mean I suspect many people just come to get a technical problem sorted out and then don't bother anymore

Chris,

I can just find time, sometimes to take a picture, I will look at the votes and even vote but with all the other things some people have going on Critique is the last thing on someone's mind.

Lets be fair, a quick scan of the pictures, a that's nice that's, lets say not so nice, sort of view in your mind and to me that's about it.

I give more Critique on Flickr than I do here, ATBH I think that the forum is stagnating and is missing the oomph that it had when I first joined.

I normally enter on line comps elsewhere now and only drop in here to have a look at the new topic and read some of the other threads, this is generally done when in bed.

Think that when the forum was upgraded everything changed and it lost it's appeal.

My views only.

Jeff

I've read that before. I makes sense up to a point, but there are caveats. OK, I can accept that if someone's work is complete rubbish, you should wait until they (accidentally?) produce something with one redeeming feature before you offer any advice. I'm not sure if that helps the aspiring photographer much, but that's not my problem (as they say). Avoiding flak is of concern to me. So, I do always follow this one. Bad photographer = no help from me.

The big caveat is the unspoken assumtion that everyone takes photos (and I mean that, rather than makes images) for the same reason. We don't; and we don't always have the same reason each time we use a camera.

I don't have the time to check out and comment very often, but I do read a lot of the posts. I don't look in the gallery at all since they changed it.
