Which lens?
recently upgraded to D7000 from D3100. I currently use Nikon 18-135mm and 35mm f1.8 but considering selling both to purchase either the 17-55mm f2.8 OR 24-70mm f2.8 (second hand from reputable Nikon dealer in London).

I need something for general use but something that is razor sharp and fast.

Advice much appreciated.

If it was me I'd go for the 24-70. Although both lenses I guess would serve you well.

Well, they're both big & heavy. If you can live without focal lengths below 24mm, and think you have FX in your future, the 24-70 is the logical choice. Also consider the Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 OS, which will cost less new than a secondhand 17-55, and is more a DX size & weight. See Thom Hogan's review. You might also be interested in his DX Zoom Lens opinions

Thanks for the tips/advice. Someone has brought to my attention the 24-85mm AF f2.8 4D IF lens and also the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G. How do these compare to the 18-135mm ED kit lens?

BugEye, you should only consider the 24-whatevers if focal lengths shorter than 24mm don't matter to you. Seems to me that you haven't yet evaluated the importance of what the lens might give you and might deprive you of.

Hi Greenwing,

I should have stated in terms of image quality/sharpness how the 24-85 compares to the 18-135 kit lens. I'm not particularly fussed at losing a few focal lengths as I am not particularly drawn to doing much landscape/wide angle shots. I've heard and read that the 24-85 gives quality shots without the 24-70mm price tag.
