Wrong picture info

Hi there, I am very new to digital photography and I seem to have made a mistake with my camera settings. I must have set the date on my new Nikon D5100 to 2010. I have saved some pictures to my pictures file on my laptop and the info pain shows these pictures as being captured in 2010 rather than 2012! My question is, is there any way of changing this to the correct date or will they stay as first saved? Also does the date really matter apart from a reminder to myself as to when I took the photographs.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks
Sparky.

Hi Sparky,
As far as I know the date is unchangeable once imprinted.
It will make no difference other than a reminder to yourself of when you took the picture, unless you're proposing to submit them in court to prove you were somewhere else when the crime was committed (LOL).

You can edit the EXIF info. There are many tools to do this. I can do it in Lightroom, probably PSE as well.

It's not so easy in Lightroom, but straight forward in many exif readers such as Photome which is a freeware exif reader, this will allow you to alter the date easily.
