Smile Kids in a flash

Hey photographers! Just took a couple of photos of my kids and would like your input.

Sad face. by mreastwood, on Flickr

Edvin, a bit sad. The reason. His sisters birthday just passed and he hoped for a present. He got none.

Using a single flash. Up high, camera right with snoot.

Turning 5 is this fun by mreastwood, on Flickr

Olivas birthday. This is how happy that makes you.

Flash camera right with collapsed reflective umbrella
Also one flash pointed at wall to make white.

EDVIN by mreastwood, on Flickr

Ed with happy face.

Single flash shoot through brolly, very close to kids face camera left.

Would appreciate any feedback. Thanks!

Great expressions in all three photos. 'Sad Face' a nice low-key image which contrasts his second pose, his face tells a story. 'Oliva' A happy go-lucky pose but the eyes are nearly closed consequently losing some of the emotion. However, the big laughing smile nearly makes up for that. The second one of Edvin more formal head and shoulders portrait, good lighting and cracking catchlights in the eyes. A half-smile sets off his pose. His skin tones are over-exposed on the image I can see and i think the background could have more exposure perhaps to nearly white.

All in all i like the lighting and neutral backgrounds, in addition the black and white treatment is suitable and works really well.

Absolutely love the first shot the lighting has given it a real village of the damned look .

The second shot is a great fun shot that made my smile just looking at it , great capture.

The third image is the weakest IMO , the left side is over exposed but not in a high key way ( which would probably work quite well with this shot ) while the right side is in semi shadow which means you end up with an image that's not one thing or another .

Thanks Mark

Appreciate your input on the third pic. Next time I will probably need to put a reflector or second flash on opposite side.

Nice shots, I like the second one best. It would be a good one to frame.
