CHAT - July monthly competition - Water Drop Photography

July - monthly competition - water drop photography

This months topic is as stated above, you should be able to produce a water drop picture using materials that can be found around the house, eg: a tray, plastic bag to get the water to drop and a means of suspension above the tray.

You can play around with colours and even different substances such a milk to create quite different pictures.

Lets hope people have fun with this as you never know what the end result will be until after the picture has been taken so a little experimenting will be required.

ENTRIES can be placed here

TECHNIQUE can be found here

RULES can be found here

Kerry, I'm sure that you will have fun with this, try different backdrops as the reflect in the water and give it colour, try coloured water, food dye, ink, anything like that, it all makes for a great picture, hopefully.

Sabrina, welcome, the monthly competitions are all about a technique and the weekly ones are based on a topic set by the previous weeks winner, hope you enjoy it on here, look forward to your entry.

I thought the monthly comp was more about PP techniques?

Just for information this is where it all started and it does not necessarily have to be all about Post Production. Please see below.

Monthly competition
Is anyone interested in doing a monthly competition? We have the weekly one here already where the winner chooses the them for the next week, which could be anything at all.

I started a thread in the general discussions about learning a new skill a week which I soon realised was way too ambitious. So I have had the idea of combining a new skill a month with a competition. Each month, the theme would be a photographic skill, and once announced, you have till the end of the month to learn the skill and post a photo. Skillls could range from panning, freezing action shots, post processing skills, monochrome, portraits, stacking, macro, depthof field etc etc etc.

In the chat thread we can discuss the problems we are having with the technique, share tips and ask/answer questions. By month end, we will have not only increased our knowledge, we will have produced a cracking shot.

Please let me know if anyone is interested and if so, I can set the ball rolling for September. After that, like in the weekly competition, the winner picks the skill for the next month.

What is there to loose?

You could say that water drop is a technique that requires "Macro" along with being able to freeze the water droplets "high speed flash" and you can always use PP to add colour if you require, so to be honest i think it is a correct topic.

Ah

Thank you. I was told (unless I read it wrong) that the monthly was about PS skills. This is also how I have been judging and choosing my entries. Ill bare this all in mind for this month.

Bed,
All I have done is basically the same as you. I use a suspended poly bag ( small) filled with water and puncture it with a pin.
One I know where the drops are falling I auto focus on a pencil then switch to manual.
Found that in my opinion a black tray work better for me than anything clear but I think that it's is a personal choice.
I add colour with bells on the off camera flash and that's about it for now, going to try some backgrounds when I get back off my holidays (poss).
Also search for Gavin Hoey, he shows a good tutorial on this subject.
Hope this helps
Jeff

Think this will be my entry unless I get anything better.
