Lightroom Technique

Ok, i know its a photoshop technique room but i have a lightroom related question for you all.


Scenario:

Ive recently started shooting with two cameras at events, Canon 400d and Canon 450d. I use the Canon 24-70 2.8 on one and my 50mm Prime on the other. When i import pictures into Lightroom i normally use the rename and number sequentially order. How do i get lightroom to import with same settings but to recognise the time and date on both sets of memory cards from both cameras so that all files are in time order?

When i shoot i always format cards and reset the file numbering. if i shot a few pictures with the 24-70 then i would go from 1 - 10 for example. When i then shoot with the 50mm i gt the same file numbers. Importing then tells me i have same file numbers.

Question:

How do you get around this?

I would ideally like files to import from both cards with the name of the event and then sequential numbers starting from 1 based on time which helps when i start ploughing through them.

Question for you first Dulz. Why have you opted for resetting the file numbering system all the time? Keeping it sequential will prevent your problems as well as keep a count of shutter actuations should you get asked this question when coming to sell the camera(s).

It also appears (from the brief info that you've given so this is only a guess) that your folder structure could do with better organising. You could for example have a main folder titled Events and then a sub folder 2010, 2009 etc, followed by sub folders of these listing the actual events e.g. British GP Silverstone, World Cart Championship or whatever. I'm sure you see what I'm driving at.

Anyway, assuming that you're quite happy with your present structure you might want to consider a small application called FlashPipe recently released from that highly rated printing application, QImage. On the face of it this application would solve all your problems in one go and for USD19.99 seems to be very good value. I believe Tringle is one happy customer already. In regards to your question about resetting the file numbers... the answer is that im weird like that for some strange reason.

In regrads to the file systems, i use the function lightroom provides to have folders which you choose at start up (Cant remember the official name). Basicall when i log into Lightroom i get to choose which main folder i want, i have several, weddings, friends & Family, Travels, Music gigs etc. Lightroom then loads up that folder which then holds only photos from that area which are organised in its own individual folders but keyworded across all folders.

My issue is more getting lightroom to file photos in order of when the shot taken rather then file number from the same event. this way shots will all be in sequential order of the the event rather then based on file number. ideally i would import based on time and then rename to what i want/need them to be called and a new sequential number added. Does that make sense?

Strange. I've been using LR since the early beta days and have yet to find that function. Are you by any chance referring to catalogues and are using different catalogues to store various events?

Bottom centre of the main Library window you will see the word 'Sort'. By clicking on the up/down arrow next to it LR offers you a choice of how you want the images to be sorted in the particular folder that is open. By the way, although you can't yourself drag and drop i.e. rearrange images around when in the grid view (Library) you can if you create a Collection and drop all the relevant images into it.
