Please note i have only had a dslr since christmas and have alot to learn i am using a canon1100d which i know is a beginners camera it came with a EFD 18-55mm lens and i got a sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 dg macro lens.

I have always liked taking photos and now just taking it to the next level.

i like this - what lens did you use for this shot? it might have been nice to get in a bit closer to the ants, but that's hard with a kit lens, i know.

i too have only had a dslr for a little while (in fact we have the same camera!) so am right with you on the 'lots to learn' front. i think there are a lot of people here who will help point in the right direction

Thank you alexharrison i was using my sigma 70-300mm f4-5.6 dg macro lens but it was my first time using it and as it only has macro function on 200-300mm it made it a little hard to get the distance right and there are very hard to focus on. I hope to go back to the butterfly house were they were at later this yr or next yr and see if i can get closer and hopefully how i have improved.

Everyone on here has been very helpful and productive in the advice and c&c. I have been on another forum but i found them to be harsh and not help just putting you down.

i've got the tamron version of that lens - it's good for not having to get close to the subjects, isn't it? although that can be a positive or a negative i guess.

i've just taken some shots this afternoon with my 18-55 kit lens and a set of cheap close up filters - had to get sooooo close, but the shots (at the minute) seem better than with my macro zoom. will put some on this forum shortly.
