Sorry Andy but the B&W conversion on this shot really doesn’t work at all , all of the foreground and sea is almost the same shade of grey and the pier / jetty is showing quite a lot of haloing on the edges . The other thing that catches my eye is the slight barrel distortion on the horizon and perhaps the composition could do with moving to your right a bit to increase the angle of the jetty .

Just my thoughts

Don't give up mate just keep at it , once you hit on the right technique the end results will speak for themselves .
Have you tried any of the video tutorials from this site or from some wear like you tube .

How do you fix a "horizon barrel distortion" of photo? I've always have that in my coastal photos.

Hi. You can use PS Elements. Open your RAW file using PS Elements. Click on the "Filter" tab on the top of the screen, then click "Correct Camera Distortion". There are settings there that you can experiment with to fix your photo.

Some cameras also have lens correction as well I think in their settings.
