D3100 which teleconverter?

Hi

I have a D3100 and was looking in getting a X2 teleconverter, looking around im getting really confused at which one to buy. Will a Nikon TC-20E III work on my camera, or is there another model that will work?? HELP!!

It depends on the lenses you want to use it with. The TC-20E only fits a small number of fairly high-end telephoto lenses.

It depends on what you mean by ( will it work ) the tele converter will double the focal length of your lens but you may well loose auto focus along with two f stops . I know that different lenses have different characteristics when coupled to a tele converter so you might have to put in a web search with your lens and the converter , I also think that the Nikon converter would be the best one to use with Nikon lenses .

the lens i would like it to fully work with (including auto focus) is a Tamron 70-300mm F4/5.6 DI LD Macro.

I'm not sure it will work on this lens , even the Nikon 300mm f/4 will only fully work with the 1.4 converter . Keep in mind that even if it will work on your Tamron you will have a 600mm f/11 at full reach and a x2 converter will lower your image quality .

You could try a Kenko teleconverter, it has all the connections for AF and metering with both motorised and screwdriver lenses, and will fit both lens and body. I don't expect that anything more than the 1.4x will be anywhere near satisfactory in terms of AF or picture quality.

Nikon converters will not fit the lens.

thanks for the advice, i supose the best thing to do will be take my gear into a shop, batter my eyelashes and hope they let me have a little try before i buy. Or i might just have to save and go for a large sigma zoom of something!

Sorry, but I have the Nikon 300mm F4 and it works just fine with my 2x converter on both the D3 and D200 with full autofocus.

On that camera you need a F2.8 lens to have autofocus with a 2x converter. Your best bet is to save up and buy a Sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 DG OS HSM Lens - Nikon Fit
at £799. It's not too heavy but you do need bright light to get the best from it.

That's really quite weird , all the technical info I have ever read on the 300mm f/4 has said that the 1.4 converter is the only one that will maintain AF .

Might have to rethink my wish list .
