Convert raw to jpeg

I have downloaded my raw photos (D300s) and deleted them from the camera. I wish to reduce them to jpeg in order to send them to friends by email easily. I have view NX2.

Not sure what NX2 is but do you have Adobe Bridge or Lightroom. Both can convert RAW's to JPEG's in batches rather than you doing it one at a time.

NX2 is Nikons editing software. It will do RAW conversion. Google for some tutorials if you need some help, rather involved to explain in a forum post.

Sounds more complicated then it needs to be. If you can get hold of or use one of the Adobe programs I spoken of (bridge normally comes with photoshop) then its a very simple process.

Thanks for the advice. I have now found out how to do it in View NX2. There is an icon called "convert'.

You can do the conversion as a Batch operation in View NX2. Select the NEFs that you want to convert to JPEG (or TIFF) then click the Convert Files icon on the toolbar, or Ctrl-E, or 'Convert files' from the file menu. Lots of options in there, too, and not at all complicated.

You'd think that NPhoto would have covered this, wouldn't you?

For some reason, when I view my Nikon NEF files (Nikon's version of RAW) in ViewNX & ViewNX2, the image displays ok but the RAW button does not activate. When I try to launch the facility to change picture controls etc, a message displays only Nikon NEF images can be uploaded. The file name of the image is labelled as an NEF file.

Also when I view the same RAW image in Adobe Photoshop 7, the image displays ok, but in the area with the camera data and information, it is labelled as a jpeg. Please help as it's driving me nuts. Is it because when I shot the image, the format I selected was NEF&Jpeg?

I shoot Raw plus fine jpeg so, you shouldn't have a problem in NX. You may have set NX to view only Jpegs instead of both and the same for Photoshop.

Don't try using the old ViewNX (v1.x) because Nikon has issued a warning about possible file corruption with the NEFs newer cameras. Check you're using the latest version of ViewNX 2 - you can update it via the Nikon website - and see if that fixes it. RL
