Video in DSLR Camera

Hi, I just read an article in the letters page from Paul Richardson and just to say your reply was very poor indeed. What has the darkroom got to do with whether a camera can do or not do? in film days it was and still is a separate part of photography, today they call it software.
He is not the only one out there that believes that DSLR stands for Digital Lens Reflex Camera and NOT Digital Reflex VIDEO Camera.
If you want to take photographs then use a DSLR if you want to take movies buy a VIDEO camera, and if the weight bothers you having to carry the two then make up your mind what you want to be, a movie maker or a photographer?.
I agree also with his comment that if the makers of DSLR's put the extra monies into the camera for what a camera was defined to do TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS! we would get better PHOTOGRAPHY cameras rather than functions as photographers we probably will never use.
Photography and Movies are different hobbies lets keep it that way.

I think people some times get a little too heated up over the issue of video in DSLRs, I think its great that todays cameras now have movie modes. I wanted to fork out on a camcoder for occassional videos and I needed a stills camera and when DSLRs started having movie modes I killed two birds with one stone by getting a DSLR, how convenient is that !

There is myth that video modes somehow increase the cost of the camera or that camera makers are pouring money into video modes its not true! Video capture is more or less (I being very simplistic here) taking the live view stream and packaging it into a file with appropriate codecs and compression then shipping the data to the memory card . Most of this is done by software and micro chips in todays and its not a costly implementation to add . Those folks who dont like video modes in DSLRs dont have to use it its that simple..................meanwhile for those photographers who wanted to branch out into making movies its now easier and cheaper than ever especially if they bought a recent camera. For independent film makers who have tight budgets and couldnt afford high end cameras they can now use DSLRs which offer so much quality , control and creativity for a fraction of the price of a top end hollywood camera. Video modes in DSLRs is something to be applauded not ridiculed. If you dont applaud it thats fine but for a lot of folks out there this is a welcome development as photography and videography are now converging.Thats were the future is heading

Russel, I have a camcorder and a DSLR with video. I don't want to carry both about as it's awkward so I use the DSLR - Not very often as I don't want to be a movie maker but sometimes I just want some movie footage of my family. I'm sure, like mine, your camera will have a number of functions which you never use. Taking movie footage is just one of them. You can ignore it like the rest.
