compressing jpegs

Hey guys,

I really want to upload one of my pictures to this forum but it's a 22.4mb file. so if you could tell me how to compress it with or without any software I would be very thankful

Jpegs are already compressed so I doubt you will be able to compress it much more.
I think you need to make the longest edge around 800 to shrink the image for uploading to here but I'm sure someone more knowledgible than I will be able to help

First of all save your image as a JPEG , I only say that because I've never produced a file of 22 MB in JPEG form before so just make sure it is a JPEG first . Then what I do is open it up in Photoshop and click

image / image size

in the new adjustment box that opens set the Pixel Dimensions width to 900 , making sure the Constrain Proportions tick box is ticked . I say 900 because this seems to be the max size that can be viewed on the site .

Another way to do it is to lower the resolution of your image , if it is at 300 pixels/inc try it at 100 or even 75 , it will all depend on the size of your image to start with .

Most image editing software should have an option to resize your image , could you tell us what software you have .

i use paint.net because it's the only software that doesn't crash my laptop

The Paint.net interface looks very similar to photoshop , at the top of the page you will see a row of buttons ( File / Edit / Image / Layers / Adjustments / Effects and so on )
Click on the Image button and then click resize , you should see some way of adjusting the pixel size of your image , set the width to 900 and make sure the ratio between width and height is maintained .
I'm not going to download the software so I don't know exactly what you will see in the resize option but if your still stuck Paint.net have a forum that you could use to ask for help .

Maybe you could try using an online tool like http://www.picresize.com/

This is only one of a few. I have never used it myself.

The easiest way is just change the pixles from 300 to 72 there's no need to change the length most photo programs have a save to web this will take it down to usually to 72 a 10 Meg pic goes down to around 800kb 72ppi is fine for screen use plus as abouns if some able to save said image its pretty useless to print
