In the case of the OP it was a security guard, at the end of the day he is not going to know the law I guess you can carry one of those cards that was linked to I suppose if it becomes an issue then you could suggest they call the police but then it may be easier to walk away and write a letter of complaint to the company you were challenged by poining out the law and asking them to make there security staff aware of it.

I was challenged recently taking photos from a public place into a breakers yard, I was upfront and honest said I was doing a project and the guy was fine about it.

Security guards are always the over-zealous ones it seems. So many of them want to be police but are not for one reason or another. It does go the other way too. My father was a security supervisor at two different nuclear generation stations but prior to that he was military police. Most of his guards were ex-police. In Ontario, and most places in Canada, guards cannot carry a firearm unless they are "special constables", so it made sense for nuclear security to hire ex police. My father got to arrest a Greenpeace member once to parachuted onto the grounds during a protest.

As governments around the globe have tightened ant-terror laws
Wow!! I did not realise that ants were such a problem - crafty little devils.

Off out to stock up on ant killing powder whilst I still can without fear of a terrorist attack.

Ant killing power could be classed as a ant terror weapon!

Thanks! And yes, that's the post. In case anyone else missed it, Jeff has written up a fantastic guide to photographers rights that is genuinely really useful. I'm certainly going to be referring back to it myself!

The exceptions are any military establishment or a crime scene and 'Possible Terrorist Targets'. It's the latter that gets difficult for all parties. Technically, the Houses of Parliament are a prime Terrorist target, but I'd hate to be a policemen tasked with trying to stop every tourist from snapping away at this iconic structure.
As far as the householder you quote is concerned, as long as you're on the pavement, you're in the clear.
as I understand it your quit right. as long as its a milatary facility, government building or court houseor sume such place and you are on public property and not in any ones way generaly speaking you can photograph any thing with in reason, but I'm open to corection
