I was going to comment much the same way. Everything used to describe Facebook negatively can also be applied to any internet forum.

I agree Chris. It's a problem across the Internet. Because you're not face-to-face no-one can tell if your tongue is firmly placed in your cheek, or whether you're being malicious. It's also a convenient spot for bullies to hide, people who would otherwise sit in the corner quietly saying nothing.
However, this does not make it a good medium and for that reason I will not use it and if that means missing out on input from the good people at NPhoto, then so be it.

jet_kit, Karen Oliver made a very good point on one of the other threads - http://www.digitalcameraworld.com/fo...6512#post76512

Where else would I have gotten feedback on my work from Elizabeth Avedon, Brian Griffin and Peter Dench, just to name three of the people who take time to regularly look at my work?

I get exposed to professional work and hear about upcoming exhibitions and books before they are announced, for me that is one of many reasons that facebook works. Also as I am in college Mon-Thursday full time it is easier for me to access facebook and is quicker and more user friendly.

Hmm, OK.

So what's the point of having this website? Why not hook all your magazine sites up to Farcebook and drop this place? Or keep this place alive, and run it.

Are you now saying facebook is more important to you than digitalcameraworld.com, because that's how it looks to me

Do you think film was just as shot and not manipulated in the darkroom?

I would argue nphotomag.com is very much alive, with lots of regular postings. Our Facebook and web pages (www.nphotomag.com) do different things... It is only our forums that are on digitalcameraworld.com

Chris, you can argue all you like, I never said it wasn't. I was talking about the forums.

It is an interesting debate - as more and more people become active on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook (and others inevitably to follow) the Internet is evolving really quickly and I think we're all trying to find ways to keep up, both professionally and on a personal level too.

Future's magazines have found that it's very worthwhile to have a presence in places like Facebook and Twitter because it's a great way of expanding our presence online and increasing awareness of the magazines. So because of that, we've found value in it and do think it's worthwhile putting our resources into this areas.

That said, we also understand that the forum remains an important place for people who prefer a different means of communicating online than other popular platforms, and I would agree that it places such as Facebook encourage the '2 minute' culture, whereas conversations on forums can often be more thoughtful and considered.

As far as managing the forums, at the moment I check the threads daily to find comments where someone needs technical help with the forum. Reading people's comments on their desire for the magazine's editorial team to be involved and respond to comments, I've also begun suggesting to members of the team threads that they might want to participate in. I believe that as editorial members of the team, their technical knowledge and opinion is of more value than mine, therefore you'll see their comments more than mine as a community editor.

With regard to managing the forum, I often hear comments from regular users that you would like people to participate more. I would like to hear your suggestions of ways you think we might be able to improve this.

Thank you for finally addressing this issue. As suggestion I have made is leading by example, welcoming new users, a few more comments on posts that are not just asking for help, it becomes more social that way.
