And that's without even considering the optics! The new Nokia mobile with it's 41MP sensor takes advantage of this oversampling advantage to produce what look like amazing images @ 5MP or 8MP!

Thanks for the explanation Mark I had heard of oversampling before but never really new what it meant .

On the subject of what these compacts and camera phones can offer photographers , I would like to know how and why a photographer would use them . Are they just a handy sized camera to take test shots before bringing out the big guns or are they the main camera if your only using the shots for the web .

Can't speak for anyone else, but I use whatever I've got that'll achieve what I'm after - sometimes as that's all I've about my person but often as it's best or the only option. As a result, I use:

Mobile phone for the last 6 years (usually as that may be all I've got but quite often as it'll get into spots I can't photo any other way) - SE K750, SE C905, HTC Desire
Compact (currently a Canon G11 as my 'carry everywhere' but bought for dog-walking or OH's dog-walking Fuji HS10)
Canon 7D - the workhorse for photoshoots/calls, studio and pet shoots + wildlife, landscapes and macros
Sigma SD10 - converted to fulltime IR
Sigma SD14 - macros and some landscapes
Canon 30D - MPE 65mm + Sigma EM-140DG macro flash

I enjoy trying to get the most out of whatever's in my hand at the time, so try to learn the strengths and weaknesses of each bit of kit and attempt to fully exploit the full potential

I started off by looking at your list with utter amazement at how many cameras you have but then I forget that although I think of myself as a passionate armature there are photographers out there that live breath and eat photography . I only have one camera ( D90 ) and my Sony Ericsson Xperia but I would never even think about using the phone over the camera when there was the tinniest opportunity to sling the Nikon over my shoulder . I have so few opportunity's to indulge myself in photography because of the usual things that take up your life that I always want to get the best result that I can so even when I take the dogs out for a walk I'll take the Nikon with me the size or inconvenience of carrying a DSLR never enters my head , if for what ever reason I find myself out with out my camera I can't bring myself to use my phone to take an inferior shot because it wont do the subject justice . Rightly or wrongly I find myself wanting to better my images rather than getting the image at any cost , this might be down to me being relatively new to photography and may well change as I grow in experience and find my own area of comfort .
