Canon 1Ds or Canon 5D

I have decided to get a Full frame body to compliment my 7d. I have been booked for a few weddings soon and primarily wanted it for a spare. I am also into my landscapes and would like the luxury of using a full frame paired with a nice 17-40L lens. I will also possibly be using the body for some interior shots.

Can anyone recommend which one - 1Ds or a 5D as both are around the same price second hand. Thanks in advance. Si

When you are in this kind of quandary, I would suggest taking a look at the following website:

You can pull both cameras up and look at their statistics side-by-side. About the only thing you can't do is feel it in your hand to decide which one feels better.

Hello Frank and thanks for the link. Unfortunately it appears that as both camera's are getting a bit long in the tooth now neither seem to be on there. Handy site to put in my favourites though - cheers.

Indeed. And this idea has developed somewhat in the past couple of days! Hopefully by the time the weddings come around in the summer we'll be seeing sub £1K Canon 5D mkii's. I think I will wait and see.

I would like to think this would be the case, but I doubt it.

For your original question though, I would go with the original 5d, it was and still is a wedding photographers fave camera. However for not a lot more, how about a 1ds mk2, or a 1d mk3, admittedly the 1d mk3 is a 1.3 crop but still more than capable.

a 5d mk1 can be had for around £500 and for that money it's a bargain
keep an eye on the serial number the early ones suffered loose mirrors ( fixed by canon free of charge ) if you can get one of the later models ( i think the serial number starting with a 2 or 3 ) the problem was resolved by canon

there is no real way of knowing the shutter activations on a 5d mk1 so your more or less at the mercy of the seller where that is concerned but the overall condition would give you an idea if it has had heavy use or not

i have owned the mk1 and replaced it with the mk2 and the mk2 is a better camera at resolving detail it's also better for low noise at high iso settings but the question is is it worth twice the price tag ??
there both capable of excellent results the rest is just money
