Shutter Noise

Hi,

I was hoping somebody on here could help me figure out how to reduce or turn down my shutter release noise, as I do a lot of bird watching and can sometimes feel frowned upon for making too much noise especially in a hyde. I have a Canon EOS 600D.

Thank you.

Ashton

Welcome to the forums!

Not much you can do, that is the noise it makes. It is not like a compact point and shoot where all the noise is electronic and can be turned off.

You could try one of these: http://soundblimp.com/

Looking around, it appears that the shutter in the 600D is louder than a lot of other DSLRs.

I think it may actually be the mirror flipping up that you are hearing. If you have the camera on a tripod you could try locking the mirror up.

He won't be able to see thru the viewfinder with the mirror locked up which would be pretty useless unless you are prefocussed on a stick you are expecting the bird to land on.

Fine for landscape photography, not so good for wildelife I'd have thought.

If he thinks that's loud he should hear the Nikon D3.

You could always try bubblewrap.

In my searching today, I found that apparently the 600D is quite a bit louder than the 60D (the most common comparison I found). I also found that it seemed to be people that had moved up from a compact to their first SLR that were asking about it.

My Pentax K10d is pretty loud, in both focusing and firing shutter - makes it pretty well useless for bird shots. On the other hand, I was staggered at how quiet the Pentax K5 is. I'm not a regular bird 'tog but it's an extra 'tick in the box' for an upgrade!

Husband.... "So dear, I need to get a new camera"
Wife.... "Why's that, my love?"
Husband..... "I need a much quieter one"
Wife.... "Oh well, dear, you do what you think is right"
Husband (silently) "Oh ******...."

Thank you to all for taking the time out to look into this issue, a few interesting comments....it seems bubble wrap is the most ideal though....ha ha, it is my first SLR so maybe its just come as a slight shock to me lol.....and the birds.. ha ha.:roll eyes:

I might add that the noise can help at times. When the bird isn't looking in your direction, take a shot and it turns to look directly at you so your second shot should be perfect.
