whats wrong with this photo ??

i took this photo of my daughter with her new born hours after birth
the circumstances were not ideal there was only the lighting from the fluorescent lights and not that much of it
the camera used was a canon 5d mk2 and a 24 - 105 F4L at 1/60th F4 and 500 iso hand held

i focused on the baby to make the mother slightly soft because i wanted the attention on baby rather than mother

i.m just not happy with the photo at all and iv'e tried different PP methods and this is about as good as it gets with my limited knowledge of PP

where have i gone wrong ??



your thoughts on the matter would be great

Hi it looks to me as if the blanket being the lightest object is being metered a touch of +ev would have helped. i would use layer masks to bright the shadows and darken the high lights

Take the exposure up a notch or 2. This kind of photo needs a slight over exposure to add emotion. A sofe focus may hep too and more than anything, a monochrome conversion. Have a go and let us see the results.

It looks flat. Upping the exposure and a levels adjustment would give it something.

after having another go at it i have come up with this


a tighter crop and a little work to the skin and some de saturation

to be honest i'm trying to get the best out of a bad photo but it's the only one

I think it's very nice - you might try a subtle vignette to darken that top right hand corner - not too much, just to take away the power of it. I find that the 'Correct Camera Distortion' in your Filters gives a good subtle effect.
