What size frame?

Hi everyone, I have a photo that I want to print at A1 size and I want approx 2in mount around the picture, so what size frame should I go for, I'm confused

A1 is 841 x 594mm. Add 100mm makes 941 x 694mm, so that's the frame size you need. You probably won't get that off the shelf, so best to leave it to your framer to make the matt and frame as required.

A1 is 841mm x 594mm and 2 inches is 50mm...... so, on its longer side, you'd want 841 + 2 x 50 = 941mm (37"), and on its shorter side you'd want 594 + 2 x 50 = 694mm (27.4"). Overall, then, that's 941mm x 694mm (internal measurement). In old terms, that's 37" x 27.4". That's the strict measurement - you may find frames in shops that round those numbers up a fraction to allow the matte.

Thanks Chris get a bit confused in mm but i understand. I was hoping I could go for a standard size frame that was bigger than A1and then get the border to fit, is that poss ?

Confused now.... you said you wanted A1, plus you "want approx 2in mount around the picture" I take it you were referring to a matte. That puts it an extra 4" beyond A1 size in both directions..... both Chris and I added the necessary 100mm (or 4") for you.

Sorry Geoff, What I meant to say was if I went out and bought a frame off the shelf, what size frame would I need so that I could have some matte as well, doesn't have to be 2 inch.
Does that make anymore sense ?

Sounds like you're looking for ready-made frames? Not as easy as it sounds..... I've been having a search online and cannot seem to come up with large ready-made frames - there again, I've been looking at the retail 'framing services' kind of shops - they tend to go with custom frames rather than having stocks of odd-sized frames, for obvious reasons.

My part of Canada seems to have so many outlets for frames of most sizes. It's something very well covered here - maybe Canadians have more wall space! Looking in the shops here, I'm afraid that I've only seen really large frames in Walmart (like ASDA) but the quality isn't so great.

Anyway, your 'ballpark' dimensions to look for (if you don't go the custom framing route) would presumably be 37"x27", but better if just a tad bigger..... up to 40"x30".

I needed a frame for a 30 inch by 20inch print last year and had the same trouble.

In the end we bought one from Ikea reasonably, I have a mount cutter so I was able to cut a mount to fit and it now hangs in our living room.

We got a custom-made frame for a limited edition print my daughter had for Christmas which was somewhat smaller (A Coldplay album cover) and it cost £75 with mate's rates from a friend who does framing.
