To be perfectly honest I don't know what I'm looking at , I know the title is A Bit Of Old Pier but there isn't any context to let me know what bit , where and why . Am I looking down at the ground or straight at a wall and is it part of an old but standing pier or the ruins of a now derelict one .

Well you did ask what I thought

There are some interesting shapes and textures but have you tried using colour and possibly HDR instead?

[QUOTE=alfbranch;72830]Its a bit of this but does that matter really.

Without the context of the wider shot the close crop didn't mean anything to me , all I saw was a jumble of shapes and textures that could of been of anything .
If you told me it was an exercise in capturing texture and shape then that would of told me all I needed to know and would of put the image in context .

To answer your question ( does that matter really ) I'll have to say Yes it does for me to understand what you are trying to say or show with the image but No if your happy with your own work and don't mind if I don't get it .

So to get back to what I think of the original image, as a part of a pier it didn't really work for me but as an abstract image of the detail and texture of a pier I think it may of been more interesting if you shot from a shallower angle and used a shallow DOF to give the image a single point of interest .

As I said before these are just my personal preferences but I'm always open to being shown different ways of viewing other peoples work .

Mark you are entitled to your opinion and an explenation should not be needed for you to decide whether you like it or not.

I am unsure about the image myself I liked the idea when I shot it but I am not sure I achieved what I wanted.

Happens to me all the time, Alf. I see something and take the shot but get home and its not what I thought it would be. Having said that though its not a bad shot at all.
