new canon 50mm 1.8 lense

hello everyone

just purchased a canon 50mm 1.8 lense. Taken a couple of pictures and the sharpness
looks very good. I know it will be no good for landscapes but can this lense be used as an everyday walkabout lense

50mm was the standard lens sold with (film) SLRs for years. But bear in mind that a 50mm lens on an APS-C DSLR gives an equivalent angle of view as a 75mm or 80mm (1.5x or 1.6x crop factor - usually 1.6x on a Canon). If you got a kit lens with the camera, that's going to be more flexible as a 'walkabout - multi-purpose' lens...... and if you haven't got a kit lens (around the 18-55mm range), they can be bought quite cheaply - millions made!

Personally, I like the idea of a fast 50mm lens for 'street' photography in particular..... and let the feet do the 'zooming'..... but it's not for every picture you want to take.

Here is something I did when I got my 50 mm f/1.8. Leave it on the camera and ONLY use it for a while. Using a prime lens makes you think more about what you are doing. I went for 3 weeks and even set up a challenge on another board for everyone to only do 50 mm shots. I just checked and it has 114 posts, mostly photos.

It is on dslreports or broadbandreports (same site) in the digital imaging forum. It started for highspeed internet discussion but has expanded and covers a lot now including general chat. I am not sure the link with work but you can try at http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r240...-MM-shots-only
