I'm still trying to get to grips with photography in general, and cannot add much practical advice here, but ...

You have put feelers out about all sides of photography; trying to find your comfort zone/interest, whatever you call it, and decided on portraiture.

Have you actually got any experience at all with portrait photography?

Before starting with models, have you tried photographing the people around you?
Relatives, colleagues, strangers in the street?

From my housewifely, amateur point of view, this seems a good start.

I have no experience, I'm just starting.

I have a message on facebook. but haven't had any success. Maybe I should message them individually. Not sure yet.
I wouldn't take photos of 'strangers on the street'.....not my cup-of-tea.

I'm thinking about doing a course. But need to find one first.

I'll be photographing someone when they're better. And I have put an ad on Gumtree and Vivastreet website. I've had 2 replies so far.

What about neighbours, friends, family?

And as far as courses are concerned, I think you have just to pick one and do it. If you keep comparing everything that is on offer, you will only confuse yourself.

I did a ten week 'beginners and improvers' course at a local college last autumn; as long as it is given by a 'proper' school or college, you can't go far wrong. Just jump in and go for it!
There's always something you'll learn, plus you'll meet lots of other enthusiasts, get to use the school studio and there are normally plenty of willing models (your fellow students).

The lecturer will be prepared to help you with specific problems/questions.

Go for it!
