Processing NEF files

I use Elements 6 for my processing and have recently bought a Nikon D90. On my Olympus E500 I had no problems opening RAW images in Photoshop but I can't open the RAW NEF files. Do I have to use the (limited) software that came with the camera, or is there a plug-in I need to use in Elements to enable it? I may be missing something obvious as I'm still very much learning Elements.
Thanks for any suggestions or help.

Elements (and the full version of photoshop) need a plugin called 'camera raw' top open raw files such as NEFs. It sounds as though you need a more up to date version which should be available for free at on the adobe website.

There are limits as to what the latest version of camera raw is that each version of elements can support. If your version of elements can't support a sufficiently new version, then you can convert to a 'DNG' file using a another free download from adobe and then open teh DNG with your version of elements.

Hope that helps.

Here's a link to the download but make sure you follow the instructions fully. You need to move the old Camera Raw.8bi file to your desktop before you install the new one, as it won't overwrite the old file.

Thumbs up NEF to DNG

Thanks Paul.
I downloaded Camera Raw but it made no difference so I downloaded the DNG converter and that was brilliant thanks. I converted the RAW files no problem and then opened them in Elements in the window I am familiar with.
Top solution many thanks.

Thanks, that may be why it made no difference when I downloaded it!
