Just realised I have the 055XPROB for some reason I thought it was the 190XPROB, I have no complaints very quick and easy to use, not to heavy and has the center column that can be quickly adjusted to go horizontal.

Nope I can't wait. I think Warehouse Express is the best cheapest place to buy them from (minus eBay).

Can the centre column be inverted so that the camera is underneath the top of the tripod?

I don't think so but I am not sure why you would want to as it will go very low.

I just bought the Manfrotto 055CXPRO3 and Manfrotto 468MGRC4 Hydrostatic Ball Head. My old tripod was a slik one and miles too heavy to carry around. This is carbon fibre, really light and seems to do everything! It was quite expensive ( thank God for Christmas money!) but I am hoping it will last me for years.

Just been to a camera shop and they only have the standard model of the 055 tripod. He said that I should give him a call in the new year if I want to go ahead with them ordering what I want. He also might put a kit together for me.

I'm not sure what to do really because I wouldn't mind paying just £100 for the tripod online. But I wouldn't know how it felt and how the head feels like.
If I buy in store I'll know what I'm buying. I wish I had asked them how much the tripod would be and what head he would recommend for the photography I do.

I wouldn't mind a carbon fibre tripod, but they are out of budget.

If the centre column can be removed and inverted, don't know how. I've just tried on mine and can't figure out how. However, the legs splay out to about 180 degrees which will get your camera pretty close to the ground anyway.
IF you can afford it, spend the extra £100 or so on the CF version, you'll never regret it. Also, on the head make sure you get the RC2 version.
As you've pretty much decided to go for the Ball/socket head you'll need to get into the habit of holding onto your camera whenever you release the head otherwise it'll come crashing down onto the tripod leg!!!!

To be honest, I'm not sure what head I want. I'll have to look in the shop and see what I think between the ball and lever-type heads.

Just been to my local camera shop and I'm getting a quote for the Manfrotto 055XPROB (aluminium) and the Manfrotto 804RC2 pan/tilt head.

Said he's going to find out if it comes as a kit, which will save me a bit more money.

So excited. (Not that I will be when he tells me the price as I think it'll be more than £200 - BUT I could be wrong.)
