That is very common here. In Quebec, it is the law you have to put winter tires on. We do on my wife's car since it is a rear-wheel drive (never as good in the snow) BMW without X-drive (all wheel drive - very popular option). I have all wheel drive on our Toyota Highlander (largish SUV) and it does well without winter tires.

We may get a couple of cm of snow overnight.

That is exactly the reason people laugh at me. 'It never snows here,' they say. Hmmm...
I have lived in Southamton since 1984, and remember only one winter without any snow at all.

Sveral winters we had a really good covering of more than a couple of inches, but even half an inch and people either stay at home, or get stranded. On roads that to 'continentals' look perfectly 'drivable.'

Does one at least lower tyre pressure somewhat to get a better grip? Or am I totally 'out of touch'? I seem to remember that that too was done in the past.

Thirty KMH seems okay when everywhere you go is snowbound. If you have cleared roads as well, it will be a nuisance.

Do you, in Scotland, change tyres in winter? Or use chains or something similar? (Just out of interest, as I haven't driven a car since Matthew was three years old!)
I dont, but I make sure my tyres have good tread on them. I do 50,000 miles a year and drive in all conditions so snow makes no odds to me, much to my frustration when I'm stuck behind folks doing 30-40mph on roads that aren't that bad, the majority of whom should get the bus or train as a lot tof the traffic is commuters heading to thier office jobs in Inverness.

I'm always prepared for the winter...last week like I do every winter, I pack my snow shovel along with my "survival kit" which is a small metal chest in which I have a sleeping bag, gas stove, spare gas, torch, tins of soup, mess tins, compass and swiss army knife and water.

Always better to be safe, than cold and hungry.....

I know (after reading your comments on the two stag party weekends) you can 'live off the land,' (or sea as it was) and didn't expect anything else!

If only everyone else was as practical.

Hope you don't need your emergency supplies when you come back from Stornoway.

Congrats Pea and Kerbside, 2 excellent shots, well done. Will up and down later, and beat myself up with a good, strong stick for my shoddy attempt at an entry.

Thanks. Yep, great theme; some really great shots.

Well done Kerbside - I'd be very pleased if you'd took the honour and picked next theme etc. ;-)
