Which wide-angle?

I upgraded not so long ago to the D800. At the same time I opted for the Tamron 24-70 VR zoom as my 'walk about' lens and I find it does a good job coupled with the Nikon 50mm 1.8 prime and 105mm macro.

However I'm looking for something wider for landscapes and cityscapes. Though the Nikon 14-24 f2.8 looks a spectacular performer it's size, weight, price and its inability to accept filters mitigate against it. I have therefore been looking closely at the 16-35mm f4 but have ended up confused at mixed reports.

So have been considering the 20mm D prime lens.

Does anyone have experience of either or both these lenses?

Now to throw a small spanner in the works Nikon have announced an 18-35mm non-VR lens but there are no reviews as yet

I have recently bought a AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED lens which I like alot and being 77mm I think will accept ND filters .... not FX though !

No experience of either of the 14-24 or the 20mm. There's the Sigma 12-24, too, which is half the price & 2/3 the weight of the 14-24, but is not f/2.8 if that's important to you.

I have a D800 too and love it. I bought a 17-35mm and although its more pricey than the 16-35mm it takes great pics. It also accepts filters. I use it primarily shooting underwater pics.

When I upgraded from a D300 to a D3s I had to sell my DX 10-20mm Sigma and chose to replace it with the Nikkor 16-35mm f/4. That is a perfectly good lens and I continued to use it when I changed from the D3s to a D800.

Eventually, last December, I decided to bite the bullet and splash out on a 14-24mm f/2.8 and the dedicated Lee filter kit. It really is a great lens but whether you can justify £800 (secondhand) for the lens and another £400 for the filters only you can say.

When travelling abroad and trying to keep within airline cabin baggage limits, I take my D800 with a 28-300mm lens and the 20mm f/2.8 prime. The 200mm is absolutely OK in terms of image quality but, of course, it lacks the versatility of a w/a zoom.

At the end of the day, as with everything else in this wonderful hobby of ours, it is horses for courses.

I can recommend the setup.

I chose the Nikon 16-35 f/4 VR as my wide angle lens of choice, used with my D800 it gives me fast accurate focusing, its very sharp and nice and light.

Tokina 11-16mm F2.8 Pro Super Wide Angle.I bought one,two months ago.All I can say is WOW.If you are able to try it first,go for it.
