Durdle Door storm

Morning all

Well, I've just come back from being in the UK and having a very hectic time. Lord only knows how many miles I've done!

Before I left yesterday I wanted to do one more shoot. I looked at the forecast for Swanage and it said 50mph gusts of wind and some rain to go along with it. Perfect!

This was taken under quite difficult working conditions. It's not easy trying to get everything you want when Mother Nature is battering you.

I like the lighting and colour tones but feel the door itself is quite dark and maybe a little too distant. Also the shot is always composed the same in all the variations I have seen on this area. What is the other side? Is it possible to go out in a boat and shoot it from a different perspective?

I would have Prefred to be Closer to the Door, that way the image would have ahd more impoact with the waves, its still a nice one though, And karen the other side is another bay, and the Composition isnt Very good, as for the boat idea, a nice idea, although would be hard with no port nearby or easy acsess to the Sea, And i wouldnt Receomend it in a Sea like that,

You could go out in a boat but I think you would have to have been nuts to go out in the weather front that was hitting the door yesterday.

The location itself is overdone and there are only so many ways to do it. Unfortunately, I didn't have loads of time here as I had to return a hire car and catch a train.

Cracking shot and composition. Love the light and tones of the rocks.

Very atmospheric image and as above great light and composition , I know your not showing the door off to its fullest but I think its refreshing to see this wider shot .

It looks like you were half way down the cliff to get that angle , well done .

I think the lighting and colours are spot on. Is this the original sky?

Yep. This is all original stuff folks. Nothing has been added in at all. It's not something I do! All I have done is add in a little fill light and lighten it a little.

On Tuesday morning, the contrast was very high and so 4 stops of grad were used to control it. Unfortunately, this can cut into an image. However, it is conditions like this that make HDR near impossible as you are being buffeted by the wind. The possibility of camera shake is very high. This accounts for the higher than normal ISO.

Glad you all enjoyed it

PS Going back to the sky. I couldn't believe my luck when it cracked open like that. It didn't last long though!
