Rough File Sizes.

I've been doing a little bit of printing lately of my photographs and the like (Not myself, but via internet printing services.)

I've come to notice that file sizes seem pretty big.

I recently made a pop up banner for my sister, the photoshop file size: 85.29cm x 220.29cm (10074 x 26019 pixels)
I saved it via "save as".. then JPEG, with "12" as the quality, i.e full quality. The JPEG size was 42MB :|. Does that sound about right?

Just seemed a lot to me at first, as it was too large to E-mail, so had to upload it to my website for the printing company to download.


Also, I scaled a picture from my Nikon D40 up to 4724x7087 pixels, saved as jpeg with full quality and it was 26MB.

Again, might just me, but that seems a little bit on the large side.
Am I doing something wrong?

The bigger the size, as in length and width, you print it at will increase the size of the file in megabytes. If it the quality you require then you have no choice.

I have just copied what you have done and yes the file is this big. There is no need for this size as you can quite happily reduce the pixels/inch of a banner to 180 and this would give a 25mb file. Large advertisements outside shops are half this figure as they are viewed from further away, as is your banner. I do alot of my own printing and for others upto A2 and for anything viewed close to the body i would only use 300 to 450 pixels/inch. As the distance to viewing increases, a minimum of 180 is more than suitable for the human eye.
