I don't really do macro / close-up stuff by the way, so any advice welcome...

Would have looked better without the smaller mushroom with maybe a different angle further round to capture the white bits there. You have chosen a bald spot. But well spotted, I have never seen one of these myself.

I rather like having the smaller there - but it would've paid off to edge around to the right to get some seperation from the larger, have it in focus and get lower still (which'll also ensure BG stays OOF). Then switch off AF and compose for the two shot, off-setting the larger's central position.

But when all's said and done, what you've already got looks pretty good!

Personally, I like the two fly agaric's together, but as Markulous said they could have done with a little separation by you coming round to the right a little more, also try to increase the DOF a touch, so the stalk and head are both in focus. The toadstools should be there for a couple of days, as long as someone hasn't kicked them over, only getting bigger, so you could go back.

With this photo, I think you could crop a bit off the left hand side, to remove some of the grass that is in focus. and try reducing the vignette a bit.

Hope this helps.

Nick

Can see it now.

Not sure which lens you used but in this situation would have selected spot and moved in closer. Otherwise, it a cracking shot with great detail.

Need to look in woodland where young trees are growing, may even be in grass but under the shade of a tree or trees.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I found it half way through a 4.5 hour walk in East Sussex, so not sure I'll be going back any time soon It was taken with my Sigma 17-70mm, as that's all I had on me (apart from the wide angle).

Interesting no one commented on the weird bokeh-like lines in the background - I can't work out why they're there...
